Ep 552: The Greats - Napa Valley

Napa Valley is unquestionably one of the great wine regions of the world. Located about 50 mi/80 km north of San Francisco, Napa is renowned for its decadent Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay and its glamourous, fancy and expensive tasting rooms. Napa only represents 4% of California's wine grape harvest, but it holds the highest reputation among all US regions.   But the region isn't all show – it has excellent terroir to make world class wines. Photo: Napa Valley Vineyard. Source: Pixabay Napa Valley stretches southeast to northwest for approximately 35 miles (60 km) from just north of the San Pablo Bay to the northern reaches of Calistoga. Nestled between the Vaca and Mayacamas mountain ranges, the Valley is about 4 miles wide at its widest point. It contains half the soil types in the world and its mountains, benchlands, and valleys have so much diversity that each wine made here reflects a different character.   In this show I go over the history, the geology and terroir, the main grapes and wine styles, and then I go into detail on the 16 American Viticultural Areas in Napa and what to expect from each.     This is a comprehensive look at this great wine region of the world that made the reputation of American wine as we know it today.     Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   Check out my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access.  They have an amazing selection -- once you get hooked on their wines, they will be your go-to! Welcome to episode 1108, in which host Polly Hammond interviews Mayacamas Olds, this week on Uncorked. This week, we welcome Mayacamas Olds. Born and raised amidst the vines, Mayacamas has spent her entire life in the wine world. Over 10 years ago, before sustainability was an everyday buzzword, Mayacamas earned her Masters in Corporate Sustainability, and has made it her mission to build regenerative models across all facets of wine, not just in the vineyards. In this no-holds-barred interview we discuss everything from the need to vote and prioritizing mental health, to the great resignation to caring for our ag workers. Let's get into it. More about today's guest: Mayacamas Olds was born and raised on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. Growing up on her family's small estate winery and vineyard operation, her love of the wine industry and sustainability was engrained from a young age. In 2000, she embarked on a lifelong career in the wine industry – first at Penfolds in South Australia as a Winemaking Liason for three years. Mayacamas then of Sky Vineyards, her family's winery, for nine years, where she touched on every part of operations, from sales to marketing to the vineyards. Seeking a new challenge she became General Manager of Sonoma Community Gardens in 2003, developing their educational programs to promote organic and sustainable ethnobotany. Since then, she has gone on to oversee 700 acres of certified organic and biodynamic vineyards at Enterprise Vineyards; oversee independent farmers and promote fiscal sustainability at Sunshine Organic Consulting; and manage sustainability, technical, and fiscal farming for 5,200 acres of California vineyards as the Director of Vineyard Operations & Grower Relations at Diageo Chateau & Estates. In 2020, Mayacamas was appointed General Manager of Gloria Ferrer, where she built successful innovative top-line strategy across operations, hospitality, DTC, marketing, winemaking, viticulture, and sustainability. Nowadays, as COO of Enterprise Vineyards and Winery Sixteen 600, she's ensuring that philosophy and sustainability goals are achieved for operations, marketing, PR, HR, and IT. To learn more visit: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Mayacamas LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mayacamasolds/ More about the host: Polly is Founder and CEO of 5forests. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today's wine businesses. She's an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. With over 20 years' experience in growing successful companies, Polly knows first-hand the challenges faced by independent businesses. Alan has authored and co-authored a number of books including Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain, The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys and My Cross to Bear, with Gregg Allman. He is also the cohost of Debatable with Mark Goodman on Sirius XM Volume.    Alan dropped in to discuss the Beastie Boys' sophomore album, the 1989 classic Paul's Boutique, over a bottle of exquisite 2016 Leviathan. Recorded over two years, the album is a masterwork of layered samples, a freewheeling hip hop opus that dropped before sampling laws became an income stream for music publishing companies. According to a 2011 article in The Atlantic, if released that year, the album would cost Capitol Records $20 million in sampling clearance fees. Paul's Boutique established the Beasties as visionaries beyond the party boy antics of their debut, License to Ill. It seemed fitting to pair this layered and powerful hip hop classic with a wine that is a similar behemoth. Leviathan is a red blend curated by star winemaker Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Favia, Mayacamas and more) who, each year, coaxes the best of each varietal in the blend from notable vineyards throughout California, creating, essentially a sampled masterpiece.       Guest: Alan Light Album: Beastie Boys, Paul's Boutique Wine: 2016 Leviathan, Andy Erickson

Recently I traveled into Alexander Valley and enjoyed some time with Nate Weis at Silver Oak's new state of the art winery .I was amazed at the entire estate and loved my time there.Today we have a new two part feature with Nate Weis and Silver Oak.First we will look at their website, and gather some history and great facts about the two featured wines from the fabled winery. Silver Oak began over a handshake between two friends with a bold vision: focus on one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, aged exclusively in American oak and worthy of cellaring for decades to come. Over the next two decades, Silver Oak grew in popularity. Our Napa Valley and Alexander Valley Cabernets sold quickly upon their release from the winery and became a sought-after staple on restaurant wine lists around the country. After selecting Daniel Baron to succeed him as winemaker in 1994, Justin retired, selling his share of Silver Oak to the Duncan family in 2001. In 2006, a fire destroyed our historic Oakville winery. It was a difficult and emotional event; but in hindsight, a blessing in disguise. When we regrouped on the morning of the fire, we knew we had to rebuild, and it wasn't long before the excitement of a new, state-of-the-art winery overcame our sense of loss. Today, we are applying this experience from our LEED Platinum Oakville winery toward a new winery in the Alexander Valley. Set amidst 70 acres of estate vineyards along the rolling foothills of the Mayacamas mountains, our new Alexander Valley winery – set to open for harvest 2017 – will push industry design and innovation standards through alternative energy sources, innovative water reuse systems and reclaimed building materials. Today, we farm more than 400 acres of vines in Napa Valley and Alexander Valley with a leading-edge approach toward precision viticulture, allowing us to give our vines exactly what they need, when they need it. All of our estate vineyards are certified under California's Sustainable Winegrowing program. In 2014, Nate Weis joined us as only the third winemaker in our 45-year history. Nate worked side-by-side with Daniel Baron, just as Daniel worked with Justin Meyer before his retirement. These overlapping tenures ensure the handing down of our commitment to continuous improvement and the wisdom that our best wines are still ahead of us. We have two great wines to discuss.starting with the 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet. The 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has an opaque crimson color with a purplish hue. The alluring nose draws you in with notes of cassis, black cherry, pipe tobacco, salted caramel, cocoa beans and fresh strawberry. This full-bodied wine enters with a depth of flavor and offers mouth-coating, velvety tannins and flavors of cream soda and red fruit. Black currant and vanilla notes crescendo through the palate to the lengthy finish. This wine is drinkable upon release, but given proper cellaring conditions, can be enjoyed through 2040. we also will open the great Alexander Valley Cabernet from Silver Oak! Located 10 minutes east of downtown Healdsburg at 7300 Hwy 128 in Sonoma County, our new, state-of-the-art winery is now open for walk-in tastings, guided tours and food and wine pairings. Designed to “Frame the Vineyard”, the winery features panoramic views of the Alexander Valley bench and our surrounding 113 acre estate and 75 acres of prime Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed at our modern barn-inspired tasting room adjacent to the iconic Silver Oak water tower. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of how sustainable vineyard management contributes to wine quality, as well as the technologies and practices we apply toward resource management and vineyard health. Healdsburg has become a great wine country hub for Sonoma County.Surrounded by the Russian River AVA,as well as the Alexander Valley, and many more.A wine country excursion should be part of your holiday celebration. these are very special wines, please consider having both wines on your Christmas day dinner menu. So now let's join Nate Weis and learn more about the world class Cabernets from silver Oak!Click on the link below and enjoy the discussion.. there are two links as this interview has many minutes of great conversation.Cheers!
