As Simon explains, Switzerland… is a small country, but when it comes to the wine sector, virtually everything is relatively small-scale. So in terms of producers of in excess of a million bottles, there are very few of them. The majority are small family-run businesses producing somewhere between 50 to 70,000 bottles a year. It's very rare that a single producer will have a single grape planted and be a specialist and expert in that grape. they would have at least 6 to 10 grape varieties planted, if not even more, and be very proud of the fact that they have this diversity in their vineyards. Each wine is a relatively small quantity and most of it stays in the country. It's less than 2% that gets exported. Why does Switzerland grow so many grape varieties, and which ones are the key players that define the country's wine regions? So other than Chasselas, there's Pinot Noir, which is actually the most planted grape in Switzerland. There's more Pinot Noir produced in Switzerland than in Chile. Gamay, and Merlot. Those are the big four in about two-thirds of the vineyards. you've got an incredibly long list of those 253. lots of very small plantings of… largely insignificant varieties, often experimental. The others I went for were those where they play a significant role within a given region. What makes high-altitude wine regions uniquely capable of producing wines that balance great concentration without being too heavy? I didn't do a word count in the book, but I think the terminology 'alpine freshness' probably gets repeated a few times. This diurnal variation is absolutely critical. You get more than adequate sunlight and sun hours during the day in summer for full ripening, not an issue. But you get these plunging temperatures at night, which helps to maintain the acidity levels. So you get the perfect combination of fresh acidity and phenomenal ripeness. Put the two together, that is probably if there's any calling card. And it's not just Swiss wine. It's the same story in Valtellina, in Aosta Valley in Italy, in Alto Adige, in Savoie. The effect of being in these mountainous areas, where you can plant at altitude but where you have this big drop off in temperature at nighttime.   About Simon Hardy Simon Hardy brings a rare blend of multinational brand marketing and entrepreneurial flair in the world of wine. How Fungus-Resistant Vines Are Shaping the Future of Italian Wine A few decades ago, “PIWI wines” sounded like something out of a laboratory experiment. Today they are front-and-center in sustainable viticulture conversations from Alto Adige to Lake Garda—and for good reason. PIWI is an acronym drawn from the German Pilzwiderstandsfähige, meaning “fungus-resistant” vines. These precision-bred crossings can fend off downy and powdery mildew with far fewer chemical treatments than classic Vitis vinifera varieties, offering a timely solution as climate change makes summers ever hotter and more humid in key wine regions. Wine importer Don Chigazola is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, with newly arrived wines from Alto Adige.  His company Chigazola Merchants brings small lots of carefully selected wines from small family producers in many different regions of Italy. Steve Jaxon describes what he does as "...the coolest job in the world." Melissa Galliani is also with us in the studio today. Don begins by describing how he has recently expanded his activity into France, by applying the same model that they do to their business with Italian winemakers. They went to the Paris wine show, and they also spent some time visiting family winemakers in Provence. They met with four and they will definitely be importing from two of them. That will begin once the tariff situation settles down. Chigazola Merchants Don started traveling to Italy with his wife Debbie, visiting small hilltop towns, asking the locals about who made the best wine. He found a lot of great wine, and noticed that the quality of wines he found in Italy was not available here. So he figured out how to import wine from Italy, to sell directly to consumers. He needed three different licenses and eventually fulfilled all the requirements. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. In the first few years, Chigazola Merchants sold about 80% of their wine to local bars and restaurants, and 20% to individuals. That proportion has reversed now, since their wine club has grown so much. Today Don has brought some white wines from the Alto Adige region, where they grow grapes at very high altitude. The wines come out with high minerality and fresh acidity. The first are tasting a Riesling that arrived in California last February. This Riesling is bone dry. Dan Berger calls this wine the anti-Chardonnay. It's not so dry that it's austere. It has fresh clean aromatics and it goes with food. Melissa agrees that it tastes fresh and crisp. The Rieslings from this producer will age well. The second wine they taste is a Sylvaner, which is a dry white variety very different than the Riesling. Dan says it is oriented to delicate foods, as a delicate wine. It could go with halibut or sturgeon. Riesling is more aromatic, this wine is more minerally. Melissa suggests Teriyaki Sea Bass. These wines are all 2023s. The third wine is a varietal that if very difficult to find here in California called Kerner. It typically makes a little sweeter wine, a little bit like Gruner Veltliner. It has a nice balance between sugar and acid. It's a "porch pounder" says Dan. Meet the Producers There is a section on the Chigazola Merchants website called Our Producers where you can learn more about the families that produce the wines that Don imports. The fourth varietal tasted today is a Gewürtztraminer. Usually that is a sweet wine, but Dan describes this one as "succulent without being sweet." The label says 3g of residual sugar, which Dan calls "nothing." Dan says it's not an easy wine to make because you have to be in a really cold climate and know exactly when to pick the grapes. The producer makes a very small amount and sells most of it in their local village. Don got 10 cases. Dan Berger says it is the most amazing Gewürtztraminer he has ever tasted.

Now this is an exciting wine! We didn't have super high expectations going in - the name Kerner does not scream “adventure” - but we are telling you this is a white wine that is worth seeking out. Some call it one of the best white wines in Italy, and after tasting it, we agree, and so we are wondering why it does not get more love! It is a grape originally created in Germany as a cross between Riesling and Schiava/Trollinger to be a workhorse and handle cold weather, the Italians have made it into a rich, complex, and beautiful aromatic white wine. Confused about why this German wine is being made in Germany?!? Listen in and we'll tell you why! Both the wines we tried in this episode are excellent, and what is fun is that they are both a little different from each other - the Abbazia wine we would call adventurous and worth seeking out, and the winemaker is no slouch, having won the Gambero Rosso Winemaker of the Year in 2009. Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Steve Jaxon talks about wine news with Dan Berger on California Wine Country today, since our expected guest was a last-minute scratch. Dan has brought a Tendu from Matthaisson in Napa Valley, made from Cortese grapes. It is a common wine in Piedmont, the province of north-western Italy, whose capital is Torino. American wine consumption is down in every category , except Sauvignon Blanc was the only one up in sales.  One reason is the influx of good Sauvignon Blanc wines from New Zealand. This caused the category to expand. There is the Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé French styles, the California style and now the New Zealand style. From region to region the styles are all different. In the US, Sauvignon Blanc was up almost 4%, while everything else was down between 4 and 8 % in sales. Tasting rooms and wineries are closing. Discount pricing is rampant. Young people are drinking all kinds of other things, even hard seltzer or non-alcoholic products. Market Cycles in the Wine Industry Wine has been with us for thousands of years, so the industry has to wait for the cycle to turn, maybe a year or two. Sometimes wine news is old news. There was a downturn in 2009 and within 18 months the business was back. Dan says that the 2024 vintage is excellent. The 2024 white wines and Rosés are starting to show up in the stores now. Pedroncelli winery in Dry Creek Valley is a thriving winery. Montse Reese their winemaker has been on the show. Also Julie Pedroncelli was on this episode last January. They have owned their land for almost 100 years. Dan opens a Kerner which is Riesling crossed with Trollinger, a red grape. It is a white wine from the Alto-Adige region of north-eastern Italy. Wineries used to operate tasting rooms at a profit, but that has changed. A lot of wineries have closed that were all producing the same wines, Chardonnay and Cabernet. Julie Pedroncelli explained how a winery has to set itself apart somehow, which they have done. Michigan is producing great wine. Look for Chateau Grand Traverse, the old reliable.

Si intitola "Solo un'altra persona scomparsa" dell'autrice inglese Gillian McAllister (Fazi - traduz. Sabina Terziari). La protagonista è Julia, da vent'anni in Polizia, una donna che sembra dipendere totalmente dal suo lavoro tanto che il marito l'accusa di trascurare tutto il resto. La figlia adolescente è molto curiosa del lavoro della madre e le due sono molto unite anche perché condividono un segreto. Julia deve indagare sulla scomparsa di una ragazza, Olivia, che si era appena trasferita in un appartamento con altre ragazze: di lei resta un messaggio d'aiuto inviato sul cellulare alle coinquiline e l'immagine di una telecamera che la inquadra mentre entra in un vicolo. Sarà per Jiulia un'indagine complicata perché dovrà venire a patti con qualcuno che la ricatta.

La cantina Rottensteiner è dedita alla produzione dei vini tipici dell'Alto Adige, in particolare quelli della denominazione Santa Maddalena, non da meno vini bianchi e rossi del territorio, tutti di pregevole personalità. Il magnifico passito prodotto con Gewürztraminer, perfetta interpretazione di questa profumatissima uva, è un trionfo di profumi e di eleganza sensoriale, tali da meritare i Cinque Diamanti DiWineTaste e il titolo di migliore vino dell'estate 2024.

"Il cuore è uno zingaro" (Mondadori) è il nuovo romanzo Luca Bianchini, famoso per "Io che amo solo te", diventato anche un film di successo. Dopo "Le mogli hanno sempre ragione" un'altra commedia gialla con protagonista il maresciallo Gino Clemente che stavolta da Polignano, in Puglia, è stato trasferito, suo malgrado, a Bressanone in Alto Adige e insieme alla moglie Felicetta cerca di inserirsi nel nuovo contesto. La tranquilla vita di Bressanone viene sconvolta dall'omicidio di Gabriel Manero, nome d'arte di un uomo originario del luogo che aveva avuto grande successo come cantante come un solo brano nel 1983 e poi aveva proseguito la carriera in Colombia. Il maresciallo deve indagare e attraverso il suo sguardo il lettore conosce più a fondo una galleria di personaggi narrati da Bianchini con leggerezza e ironia, giocando sui clichè.
