Why do estates from around the world want to work with a historic institution in Bordeaux? What impact have these wines had on La Place and beyond? And should fine wine producers look to La Place for distribution?   In the small world of La Place, no other change has had as many impacts as the recent growth of the Beyond Bordeaux wines category. From Almaviva to Opus One, from Penfolds to Masseto, the international icons have transformed the way the Place works, and the way we understand the fine wine category. But in the last five years, the Place has also started to distribute what could be qualified as “anonymous brands” — wines with a surprisingly limited level of desirability, or international recognition. It's a strategic move that left many actors in the fine wine supply chain quite puzzled. In this fourth episode, hosts Felicity Carter and Pauline Vicard explore the origins of the Beyond Bordeaux category and explore the impacts of this growing category on the future of the Place.   With many conflicting interests at play, they bring diverse and layered opinions from all part of the supply chain. From Beyond Bordeaux producers to négociants, courtiers, journalists, distributors and importers, and Bordeaux châteaux, they all share their unfiltered opinions on the impact of the Beyond Bordeaux wines. Wehave another great audio feature for you all today!daryl Groom Will join me as we open his great Zinfandel.First we look at his website and fill you in on his great career in the winemaking industry. Daryl Groom has been involved in the wine industry in both the USA and Australia for more than 30 years. Currently he is engaged in a number of wine- related projects in both countries. He is the Owner/ Winemaker for Groom Wines in Australia, a very successful ultra premium brand focusing on Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. His other great joy is his newest brand Colby Red Wine, a wine initiated and inspired by his son Colby Groom who underwent back to back open heart surgeries. Proceeds from this wine go to charities across the USA that promote heart health (www.colbyred.com). The Groom Family has raised over $900,000 for heart charities including the American Heart Association and The Children's Heart Foundation. Prior to his current ventures, Daryl was Senior Winemaker for Penfolds in Australia where he oversaw the making of Penfolds famed red wine, Grange. He was the Executive Winemaker for Peak Wines International that owned both Geyser Peak and Wildhorse Wineries (1990-2005) and then Senior VP of Operations and Winemaking for Beam Wine Estates (2006/2007). Daryl's passion for wine sees him judging at 8 international wine shows annually. He has also been a repeat guest on E television and also appeared on the NBC Today Show. He also partners and is Chief Judge at the North Coast Wine Challenge Wine Competetion and is partner with well known Chef Charlie Palmer in the prestigious and highly successful Charlie Palmers Pigs and Pinot. Pigs and Pinot is an annual 2 day event that raises over $150,000 for local and national charities. Zinfandel is a grape variety whose origins are believed to be from Europe, possibly Croatia, where it was traded to Italy and referred to as Primativo. Zinfandel's success is primarily related to California where it has been grown for 150 years. It is produced by many wineries and receives cult status among wine lovers. Many believe this variety is to California what shiraz is to Australia. Zinfandel is a hearty variety. It produces its best wines in areas where the grapevine needs to work hard. Our Kalimna shiraz vineyard has just the micro-climate to experiment with this variety to endeavour to produce wines that match California's best. It is no secret that the best California Zinfandels are from old vines, grown head-trained (aka bush vines). With this principle in mind we decided to plant and train our vines to this method. More time consuming, less yield but hopefully high quality. Our 8 acres of bush vines have been designated the “Bush Block”. This first release is a solid wine displaying very typical zinfandel hallmarks. Brick red in colour, a very spicy, raisiny aroma and a rich medium weighted palate with some apparent sweetness, although the wine is dry. This sweetness in taste comes from the higher alcohol and raisining of some of the grapes. This wine can be very much enjoyed with pasta or red meat, and will be fantastic with cheese to end a meal. Please join us by clicking on the link below, and enjoy our great audio feature with Daryl Groom1 Cheers! Click here and join us as we enjoy great wines and food.

We have a treat for you! I recently sat down with Daryl Groom, and opened three of his wines.Truly a Pleasure to talk with this world class winemaker. First we will look at his recent press and a little from his website)(groomwines.com) and on the wines to be featured. We have three amazing wines starting with a beautiful Sav Blanc. Lenswood, in the Adelaide Hills appellation of South Australia, is where our Sauvignon Blanc is grown. It is a very cool climate with relatively high winter rainfall. Our Lenswood vineyard is dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc and is producing stunning Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Daryl says that the vineyard conditions are so perfect that all he has to do is harvest at the right moment and then get out of the way and not muck things up! What emerges from this clean, uncomplicated winemaking approach is a wine with brilliant acidity and flavors that balance citrus with floral. Brighter than California Sauvignon Blanc, and a little less pungent than New Zealand, this wine exemplifies the Adelaide Hills appellation as a world class Sauvignon Blanc producing region. Our wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc fruit, 100% stainless steel fermented with no oak contact and 0% malolactic fermentation. Daryl's aim is to get the incredible, intense fruit flavors from the vine into the glass. This wine showcases pure Sauvignon fruit at its very best. Links to vintage specific technical information for each vintage. This wine is all a Sav Blanc wants to be,purely perfect and in fact a food and wine pairing in your very near future. Our next wine has become an instant favorite of mine! The Barossa Valley is the source of our Shiraz. With it's hot, dry conditions and fairly level valley floor and undulating hills, this appellation is generally recognized as the best red wine district in Australia. Our Kalimna property is located next door to the traditional Penfolds Grange “mother source” vineyard. The unforgiving soils of this area are well known to produce very low yields, loose clusters and extremely small berries. Classic, ultra premium Shiraz territory! Daryl looks for a little less wood in his Shiraz than is typical of Australian Shiraz. He wants a wine that is rich, but not overly jammy, tannic, or oaky in flavor so that it can show off the spicy, anise, berry flavors - true varietal characters in the grape. He is looking for a firm, fleshy structure and a fine texture. Daryl achieves his results by traditional and gentle winemaking methods: fermentation is small batches, punched down in open-top vessels; a skin maceration of only 6 days; minimal handling throughout and aging in American oak (half new, half 1 year old). Careful barrel selection increases the quality and consistency of our Shiraz. In the very near future we will discuss and feature his Zinfandel. for now please click on the links be low,and join me as we introduce you to one of the great winemakers of our current times... Kara and Daryl Groom with Melissa Galliani, Wine Country Radio Kara Groom of Ra Ra Wine Co. and her father Daryl Groom of Groom Wines join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. Daryl Groom was born in Australia, where he started his wine career. He always wanted to be a winemaker. When he was 17 he went Roseworthy Academy, to the agricultural college in Australia and “sort of never looked back.” He got the job as senior white winemaker after one year, then the biggest winery in Australia, Penfolds, bought his winery and he became the head white winemaker. Then by the age of 25 he got the job as head winemaker also for red wines. In 1989 Penfold acquired a 50% share in Geyser Peak Wine, so he came to California on a two year contract. 34 years later he is still here. His daughter Kara Groom is also a wine maker and she is also here today. She wanted to visit Australia and her father suggested she work on a harvest down under. So in the next four years she worked six harvests in both northern and southern hemispheres. Ra Ra Wine Co. is Kara's wine company. Ra or Ra Ra is her nickname. She wanted to make a Rosé that was “fun and delicious” and to call it Ra Ra, so that's what she has done. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Her website is karamariewines.com. Daryl's other children have careers in fields other than wine. Dan Berger is here today, despite his voice being afflicted by the common cold. He sounds gravelly and rough, like the kind of soil that produces wines of distinction. Today he has brought a 2008 Chardonnay from Greg La Follette's GLF brand, from his cellar, for tasting. Ra Ra wines are all unoaked, even her red wines, because she wants to let the fruit shine. She picks at lower alcohol levels and bottles the wine early, to capture the fruit profile. She has brought a Dry Riesling, a Melon de Borgogne and a Rosé of Grenache, Ra Ra Rosé. Dan Berger first met Daryl Groom in the early '90s and proclaimed him the Winemaker of the Year in 1991. Penfolds wanted him to go back to Australia after those first two years. But Dan Berger gave him a great review in the LA Times and made him winemaker of the year. That was the reason he stayed. If his wine was that good after two years, he had reason to keep at it. Kara's wines are available at her website and also locally at Wilibees and at Bottle Barn.  Dan Berger is impressed with the quality of her wines. People are looking for "known varietals in unknown places, or unknown varietals in known places," she says, so her wines are designed to appeal to those desires. They are pouring their 2023 Melon de Borgogne. It is called Muscadet in France, but we have to call it by the varietal name here in this country. Dan says the aromatics are "unbelievable." This variety us often used as a blending grape, and rarely is it used by itself. They also taste Kara's Rosé of Grenache. Dan notices that it does have strong fruit flavors and it is true to the character of Grenache. Dan thinks that Grenache is the best red wine grape for making Rosé and Kara agrees. She calls it her flagship wine. She started her label with 100 cases of Rosé.

Defining 'Why': The Game-Changer in Brand Identity

The Beverage Business Hub Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 24, 2023 19:15

In this episode of the Beverage Business Hub cast, we will delve into a fundamental aspect of consumer behaviour and branding: the power of "why." As Simon Sinek famously said, "People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it." This sets the stage for exploring how the 'why' behind brands profoundly influences consumer choices and brand success. The Power of 'Why' in Consumer Behavior Let's begin by exploring a compelling example demonstrating the impact of 'why' on consumer behaviour. Consider two wineries offering similar products but at vastly different price points. What sets them apart? It's their 'why.' We'll examine how a brand's underlying purpose and story can significantly shape consumer perceptions, influencing their purchasing decisions. Understanding the Significance of 'Why' in Branding Taking cues from iconic brands like Nike, we'll dissect how a clear 'why' propels certain brands ahead of others in competitive markets. We'll discuss how uncovering a brand's 'why' is intricately linked to crafting a Unique Value Proposition (UVP), a critical component in brand differentiation and resonance. Crafting a Captivating UVP What makes a UVP compelling? We'll break down the golden circle concept introduced by Simon Sinek - the 'why,' 'how,' and 'what' - and illustrate its application in crafting a UVP that resonates deeply with the target audience.

Welcome to episode 1108, in which host Polly Hammond interviews Mayacamas Olds, this week on Uncorked. This week, we welcome Mayacamas Olds. Born and raised amidst the vines, Mayacamas has spent her entire life in the wine world. Over 10 years ago, before sustainability was an everyday buzzword, Mayacamas earned her Masters in Corporate Sustainability, and has made it her mission to build regenerative models across all facets of wine, not just in the vineyards. In this no-holds-barred interview we discuss everything from the need to vote and prioritizing mental health, to the great resignation to caring for our ag workers. Let's get into it. More about today's guest: Mayacamas Olds was born and raised on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. Growing up on her family's small estate winery and vineyard operation, her love of the wine industry and sustainability was engrained from a young age. In 2000, she embarked on a lifelong career in the wine industry – first at Penfolds in South Australia as a Winemaking Liason for three years. Mayacamas then of Sky Vineyards, her family's winery, for nine years, where she touched on every part of operations, from sales to marketing to the vineyards. Seeking a new challenge she became General Manager of Sonoma Community Gardens in 2003, developing their educational programs to promote organic and sustainable ethnobotany. Since then, she has gone on to oversee 700 acres of certified organic and biodynamic vineyards at Enterprise Vineyards; oversee independent farmers and promote fiscal sustainability at Sunshine Organic Consulting; and manage sustainability, technical, and fiscal farming for 5,200 acres of California vineyards as the Director of Vineyard Operations & Grower Relations at Diageo Chateau & Estates. In 2020, Mayacamas was appointed General Manager of Gloria Ferrer, where she built successful innovative top-line strategy across operations, hospitality, DTC, marketing, winemaking, viticulture, and sustainability. Nowadays, as COO of Enterprise Vineyards and Winery Sixteen 600, she's ensuring that philosophy and sustainability goals are achieved for operations, marketing, PR, HR, and IT. To learn more visit: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Mayacamas LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mayacamasolds/ More about the host: Polly is Founder and CEO of 5forests. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today's wine businesses. She's an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. With over 20 years' experience in growing successful companies, Polly knows first-hand the challenges faced by independent businesses. The plan was to get his insights about the pandemic's likely impact on the drinks industry, but it turned into a really interesting discussion about wine, spirits and beer consumption trends in China, more generally. This is another update on the dynamic Chinese drinks market, including moves by spirits giants Diageo and Pernod Ricard to establish single malt distilleries there, and the opportunities Ian can see for Australian distillers. First off though, we get Ian's thoughts on the news that Australian icon Penfolds is set to make wine in China. It's a bid to circumvent the punitive Chinese tariffs implemented on Australian wine imports in August 2021. I started by asking Ian whether he was surprised at the severity of those tariffs, and the ripple effect for the global wine market.
