Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of Life After Kids, Dr. Brooke and Dr. Lynne dive into the topic of building confidence at any stage of life. They begin by reflecting on how personal experiences and shared interactions with their audience shape the themes they explore. This episode centers around understanding confidence, distinguishing it from self-worth, and discovering practical strategies for fostering both. As Dr. Lynne puts it, "Confidence is a doing; it comes from action," emphasizing that building confidence involves more than just a mindset. The doctors delve into two primary ways to cultivate confidence: keeping promises to oneself and stepping out of one's comfort zone. By staying true to commitments, whether big or small, individuals can validate their capabilities and prioritize self-development. Moreover, the discussion turns toward the significance of taking risks and welcoming failure as an opportunity for growth. Dr. Brooke shares her personal journey of joining a challenging business group that enhanced her confidence, highlighting the importance of putting oneself in a stretch zone. Key Takeaways: Confidence Building: Confidence stems from keeping promises to oneself and consistently stepping out of comfort zones. Defining Confidence vs. Self-Worth: Confidence is action-oriented, while self-worth is about inherent value; both are essential in personal growth. Role of Faith: Finding self-worth through faith can be a powerful avenue for personal validation and confidence. Growth Through Failure: Embracing failure as part of the success journey contributes significantly to confidence building. Practical Application: Encourage your older children to find confidence by allowing them to navigate challenges independently, thereby gaining valuable life skills. What does it look like to follow God's will in love and relationships? In today's message, Dr. John Neufeld continues in Genesis 24, unfolding the story of how Abraham's servant sought a wife for Isaac—not through chance, but through faith, prayer, and wisdom. As he unpacks the servant's trust in God's providence, Dr. John challenges us to consider how God's hand guides not only our relationships, but all of life's important decisions.Confident Faith: In this 4-week series on Genesis 18-25, Dr. John Neufeld looks at the life of Abraham and unpacks the topic of faith. How is faith formed? How does faith mature? And how can faith help us trust in what God has promised, even though we can't see it yet.
In today's world, the idea of marriage is often reduced to personal happiness or romantic love. But as Dr. John reflects in this message, marriage holds a deeper purpose—it's about securing the future of faith. He examines the story of Abraham sending his servant to find a wife for Isaac, showing how love and marriage are meant to impact future generations and foster godly offspring. Dr. John challenges us to trust God in our relationships, whether we are married or single, and to centre our faith in all decisions about love.Confident Faith: In this 4-week series on Genesis 18-25, Dr. John Neufeld looks at the life of Abraham and unpacks the topic of faith. Send us a textGrief is one of the hardest roads we walk in life, yet it is a journey we all must take at some point. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, an unexpected life change, or the quiet ache of unspoken sorrow, grief touches us deeply. But what if we allowed ourselves to truly lament—without rushing past the pain or feeling pressure to “move on” too quickly? In this episode, Nikki Ogden and Angie Elkins dive into the raw and often uncomfortable emotions of grief, exploring how sadness can be embraced as a spiritual discipline rather than something to suppress.Their conversation unpacks the significance of grief and lament in the Christian life, emphasizing that sadness and hope are not opposites but can exist together. They discuss biblical examples of lament, showing how Scripture gives us permission to express our deepest sorrow before God. The conversation highlights the importance of communal grief and how mourning within a faith community brings healing. If this conversation resonates with you, we'd love for you to share it and walk alongside others in their journey of healing!SHOW LINKS:Connect with Angie Elkins The Glass House Podcast Click HERE to shop the Together Bible Study from Lifeway and Ben Mandrell

We live in a time of disillusionment. Trust is waning in the public sphere, religious affiliation is on decline, and some feel a deep tension or ambivalence about their community—whether that's a region, family, political party, or spiritual tradition. How should we think about the experience of disillusionment, particularly the threat of becoming disillusioned with faith?Aimee Byrd, author of several books on contemporary issues facing Christianity. And after her own experience becoming disillusioned with the church, she wrote her most recent offering: The Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment. In this conversation, Aimee Byrd joins Evan Rosa to discuss: how to diagnose and understand disillusionment—particularly disillusionment with church and the trappings of Christian faith & culture; as well as the problem of spiritual abuse and the broken forms of faith that allow it to persist. She explores the Old Testament's Song of Songs—exploring how it honors the depth of human longing and desire. She considers how beauty validates our yearnings and invites us toward a lasting faith and gives us new sight and recognition, and ultimately takes a hard look at what it means to explore our wounds and scars in search of hope and faith.About Aimee ByrdAimee Byrd is the author of many books, including her latest, The Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment (2024).Show NotesThe Hope in Our Scars: Finding the Bride of Christ in the Underground of Disillusionment by Aimee Byrd (https://zondervanacademic.com/products/the-hope-in-our-scars)Steven Heighton's The Virtues of Disillusionment (free PDF download)Unpacking disillusionment. Sometimes, the most extraordinary thing is right under our noses. In this final message of the series, Pastor Joel talks about the ordinary is good, but we must be careful to not let ourselves believe the good news we believe and the Savior and King we give our allegiance to is ordinary. He walks through the story of the transfiguration of Jesus to talk about how we need these reminders from time to time, but also that they come in glimpses.

Many Christians go through a period of their life where they walk in what feels like a spiritual wilderness: A season where we feel lost to God and our faith and many other things. Our spirit is crushed, and we feel unable to hear God's voice. Depression might be part of it, but it's more than that. God feels hidden to us. Some call this season a dark night of the soul. Has God abandoned us? Is he hiding from us in these seasons? Does he even care? The truth is, God is always looking to draw us deeper into his love, and so if he seems hidden then there must be a reason—and it must be to draw us deeper into his love. In this message, Pastor Joel preaches about how how we can walk off these seasons by using Jesus' time in the wilderness in temptation as a model.

Humans love stories, and the main places we tell stories in our modern culture is through movies, TV shows, and increasingly, video games. In our ordinary lives movies, video games, and TV shows are some of the places we go to find something special, to find, as actress Nicole Kidman says in a well known AMC Movie Theater ad, “magic…to laugh, to cry, to care, because we need that. To find that indescribable feeling we get when the lights begin to dim, and we go somewhere we've never been before, not just entertained, but somehow reborn.” The stats bear out the feeling Kidman is describing. Various studies all say the average American watches around three hours of TV a day, and that doesn't include time spent watching movies or playing video games. We come to stories looking to be inspired and find meaning in our own ordinary lives. But what if the hope of finding some magic in the stories we tell indicates a longing in the human heart for a greater story, one as old as time put there by God? In this message, Pastor Joel walks us through Acts 17 to show us how this is the case, and encourages us to be thoughtful about the stories we take in.
Since the beginning of 2024, we have been digging deep into our study of the book in the Bible written by JESUS' little brother James. James can pack a “literary punch to the gut” at times. He uses very practical, but very challenging words to call us to a FAULTless FAITH! (Which is the name of our series.) In this message, Pastor Joe Still looks at what many Bible commentators say is James' hardest hitting group of verses. In fact, several commentators agree that, next to the recorded warnings that JESUS gave to the religious leaders He encountered, this teaching from James is the most abrasive and unexpected in the New Testament. Why don't you engage in this teaching, as we explore these very potent words the HOLY SPIRIT inspired James to write that we know as James 5:1-6?

We have a mixed and complicated relationship with doubts. We all have them but we also despise them because they scare us and cause us to ask things that make us uncomfortable. Especially in faith circles, doubt can sometimes be looked down upon. Have you ever paused to consider how your career and faith intertwine? In our latest episode, we sit down with Chelsea Patterson Sobolik, a distinguished author and policy expert, who shares her inspiring journey from international ambitions to significant policy work in the heart of Washington DC, all through the lens of a biblical worldview. Chelsea's candid discussion about her adoption story and her advocacy for refugees and immigration broadens our perspective on the unique challenges and victories women face in balancing their profession and personal lives. This conversation takes a deeper look at the sacred act of labor, transforming our understanding of work into an expression of divine worship. Reflecting on Martin Luther's teachings, we realize that even the most mundane tasks carry a profound purpose - serving others and acting as vessels for God's love. The reassurance from Scripture that our labor, whether praised or unsung, is seen and valued by God, offers comfort and compels us to seek His presence in our daily grind. It's a heartfelt reminder that our work can be a beautiful expression of our faith. To wrap things up, we contemplate the forgotten art of Sabbath rest and the essential nature of finding balance. The episode draws attention to the modern obsession with being perpetually busy and how resting is not only rejuvenating but also a humbling acknowledgment of our human limits and God's overarching control. I also share some of my treasured Bible study practices, hoping to encourage you to weave spiritual growth into the fabric of your day-to-day life. For those seeking a deeper exploration of these themes, Chelsea Patterson's book, "Called to Cultivate," comes highly recommended as a guide to discovering the joy and fulfillment found in the intersection of work and faith.Book: Called to CultivateWebsite: chelseapattersonsobolik.comGo-To Bible: ESV Study BibleJournalFavorite App/Website: DwellAlabaster Beautiful individual Books of the Bible Support the showCheck out our website for more ways to fully connect to God's Word. When this week's guest, author Patricia Crisafulli, and I first got on a call together she expressed that she wasn't quite sure if she would be the right fit for my audience. She wondered if Creative Fiction was "spiritual" enough for the show. After all of 30 seconds talking we both decided, of course it is! What could be more Spiritual than Divine Creation of stories, ideas, and expressions of the Human experience? Patricia believes that stories – all stories – hold deep truths. They're the “myths of meaning” for our own time. As we capture, polish, share, and retell our stories, we find layers of new meaning. They don't have to be autobiographical to show us either our current world-view or an alternate world-view. On this episode Patricia shares some unique concepts from her journey as a creative writer including writing as an act of faith & why we have to find the courage – and give ourselves the permission – to believe deeply in ourselves and the importance of our stories. How the writer's path is one of rejection – and redirection. It's simply part of the process. And how we all need to find ways to become empowered – not defeated – as we face, process, and ultimately move beyond the “no” and reach the “yes.”Join the Women Waken Community on Instagram Here: https://tinyurl.com/522duz2c You can learn more about Patricia & find her books here:Patricia Crisafulli is an award-winning writer and a New York Times bestselling author. Trillia Newbell joins Kelli and Steve to talk about her book "Fear and Faith: Finding the Peace and Your Heart Craves. “Fear is an emotion we can feel in a variety of ways; it can be paralyzing, controlling, and even motivating,” says Trillia Newbell, author of the book, Fear and Faith (Moody Publishers, April 2015). “Unfortunately, fear is often a by-product of the sin in our heart. Fear has a way of whispering lies to our souls about who God is. We are given to fear, and we desire control, but the Lord has something better for us. The Lord has the better way—a way that will give us life and peace.” Copyright WGNR Radio 2023See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Professor, comedian, podcaster and now author, R. Scott Okamoto returns to the podcast to discuss his new book: Asian American Apostate - Losing my Religion and Finding Myself at an Evangelical University (Ev.U.). After reading the volume cover to cover, Ken shares his written review which will appear on the Amazon site featuring Scott's book. Throughout Scott's college and graduate school life, he identified as a committed evangelical Christian, working closely with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Earning his B.A. at the University of California at San Diego and then his M.A. at the University of San Francisco, Scott began teaching as an adjunct at a high-profile evangelical university (Ev.U.) in Southern California. Within a few years, he became popular a full professor in the English department. But as he taught, privately, his Christian faith began to unravel. The conservative political culture, the exclusivist fundamentalism, the racial insensitivities, and the gender debates all contributed to what he now calls a complete deconstruction of his faith. After leaving Ev.U., Scott created a safe space for others to discover freedom, identity, and community outside the structures and strictures of high-demand religion and conservative politics. He tells his story and theirs in this episode of the podcast, his new book, and his many interviews as host of his own popular podcast - Chapel Probation. In this episode, we explore what it means to live out our faith in an embodied way, and how we can find freedom in our physical bodies. Our guest, Alisa Keeton, founder of Revelation Wellness, shares her insights and strategies for cultivating a healthy and positive relationship with our bodies. 11:00 - Jesus lived in a body just like we do. How can we begin to see our faith walk as an embodied experience? Our bodies are a gift from God and an integral part of our spiritual journey. By viewing our faith walk as an embodied experience, we can begin to embrace our bodies and develop a more positive relationship with ourselves. 17:00 - The intersections of being "whole" and "holy" in Spirit, Soul, and Body. Being whole and holy involves nurturing our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. When we prioritize bringing all three aspects of ourselves to the Lord, we can experience greater wholeness and connection with God. 21:00 - God has hardwired you physically for a goodness that matches what you feel in your soul as goodness. Our physical bodies are not separate from our spiritual selves. In fact, God has designed us to experience goodness and wholeness in both our physical and spiritual selves. 28:00 - What can we do to shake the negative feelings that are manifesting in our emotions and our physical body? Negative thoughts and emotions can impact our physical well-being. To shake these feelings, we can practice self-care, exercise, and meditation on the Word, and intentionally focus on gratitude. 33:00 - What can we do in the tension between what is and what we hope will be? The season where we want to be fully free, but we're not there yet. Finding freedom in our bodies is a journey, and it's okay to be in the tension between where we are now and where we hope to be. By embracing the process and practicing self-compassion, we can move towards greater freedom and wholeness. 39:00 - What does total body freedom actually mean? Alisa paints a picture so we can get a vision for where we're headed. Total body freedom means embracing our bodies as they are, without shame or judgment. It means practicing self-care, self-compassion, and gratitude, and intentionally cultivating a positive relationship with ourselves. 44:00 - What can we do today, from a freedom posture, to steward our body well so we can feel physically well. We can practice small habits and actions every day that prioritize our physical well-being, such as drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and eating nourishing foods. By stewarding our bodies well, we can experience greater physical and emotional health. 48:00 - Embodying your faith walk through Revelation Wellness Videos! Download the free app! Alisa shares how Revelation Wellness offers resources and tools for integrating faith and fitness.
