Suzanne and Jungian analyst Lisa Marchaino discuss Jungian psychology and how its ideas about motherhood can prepare us for an easier ride as moms. I begin today's show by sharing an essay I wrote, What Needs to Change in Your Life Right Now? Here I invite you to consider a whole new approach to your life as spring begins, the pandemic wanes, and we—hopefully—move forward. Take a moment with a journal to relax, get grounded and return to you with the following questions. Answer honestly and prepare to surprise yourself. It's a good way to get back to YOU. What have you been hanging on to that you need to let go of? Who or what has been dragging you down or weighing heavy on your mind? Who needs your apology? What have you been tolerating? Where could you be more accepting? Where have you gotten stuck in the last year? What have you been craving or longing for? What have you been hard on yourself about? Do you need to forgive yourself? What would make your life wonderful? What's missing in your life—even if you don't know how to manifest it yet? What inspires you, excites you, lights you up? Who or what has added immeasurably to your life? Whom do you need to thank and appreciate? What's been unexpectedly fun? Who would you like to be in the coming year? Where could you make some clear requests? What will you do just for you? Motherhood is rewarding, but also very demanding. How do we avoid losing contact with ourselves when we are so busy being a mom? How do we deal with the anxiety, frustrations, stress and genuinely hard moments of motherhood? Jungian analyst Lisa Marchiano helps us understand how a Jungian perspective can really heal our mothering upsets—and give us a long view that will make us far better able to handle the tough stuff. Here are some of the cool things I learned from Lisa: How a Jungian perspective helped her get through the toddler years What a Jungian point of view is and why it matters How to get a greater sense of purpose in your life Why it's critical to own your shadow side as a mother –or non-mom What fairy tales have to do with your self-care A great fable about the value of overwhelm and limitations in motherhood How to deal with angry, resentful teenagers May this episode heal the hurting places within. Lisa Marchiano is a Jungian psychoanalyst and cohost of the marvelous “This Jungian Life” podcast. We discuss Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's work and the implications for physicians and the ailing medical profession.Lisa explains that Jung believed: “We are all on a path toward wholeness. The goal of life is to become more whole—and when that path is blocked in some way, we get symptoms.” Unlike the so-called manualized therapies (following a manual with techniques outlined for various diagnoses) there are no prescribed “techniques” in psychoanalysis. The conversation and the relationship that is created between the analyst and patient are the therapy. Lisa Marchiano says that the therapist doesn't have the solution but rather it arises from the wisdom of the patient. “I see my job as creating the space where the patient and I can listen for that solution to come forward.” Lisa offers this WHIRLWIND TOUR OF THE PSYCHE ACCORDING TO JUNG:Persona: The mask we adopt based on our role (e.g., CEO or professor or caregiver). It is useful and socially adaptive and allows us to meet the demands of our culture but becomes a problem if we over-identify with a persona.Ego: This is the conscious personality, when I say “I”— that's the ego. It's the part of our personality that gets stuff done and also manages our inner world of emotions.Personal Unconscious: Things we've forgotten about or repressed but that still affect us and motivate us.Collective Unconscious: A more mystical element of Jung's framework which points to broad patterns of behavior and motifs (archetypes) that are not inherited from recent ancestors but are a priori and related to instincts. The Self: A central non-verbal intelligence that is considered the unconscious guiding self or in Jung's words: the God within. The concept of the unconscious is central to Jung's work. The process of becoming whole, or individuating, involves being open to the unconscious Self and bringing more of that content into consciousness. Because one access point to the unconscious is the content of dreams, most Jungian analysts pay close attention to patients' dreams. In this episode:·Jung believed that most of his patients were suffering from a lack of meaning.·“Ideally, physicians are well-placed to have a sense of meaning in this world- but that's less and less true.”·Medicine's plight of systemization, corporatization and the loss of autonomy threatens the sense of meaning in this noble profession.·There is protection in the transpersonal energy of the physician-patient relationship- but this ability to connect is disrupted in the dehumanizing setting of corporate medicine·“When you're just a cog and told exactly what to do and you don't have any autonomy - could you still feel like that was meaningful?·“Doctors should rise up- those with the heroic energy- and say we need to take this back.”Meet Lisa Marchiano, LCSW, Certified Jungian Analyst:Lisa Marchiano is a writer, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and certified Jungian analyst in private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her book recognizes and names these difficulties and shows how they might, in the end, lead to unexpected riches. Eric LeMay is on the creative writing faculty at Ohio University. The listeners' questions continue to absorb our interest and influence our discussion. The issue of power struggles between parents and children has been raised along with a special focus on knowing when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. The script that trans-identified teenagers often use to declare their trans identification is outlined and Sasha & Stella discuss a kind of counter script for parents. Finally, we suggest a liberal parents' guide to explaining your child's gender-related distress with friends, neighbors, and the wider community. We appreciate you! Q: What can I say to my daughter? Is there a counter script? Stella loves the idea of having a script for parents to help their teen think deeper on some of the implications of a transition. Sasha has noticed parents falling into certain categories, like having a difficult time with their authority towards their child vs. some parents going in with a lot of fear and force on what their child “should” be. Don't expect lightbulb moments from your child when you share a piece of wisdom with them. Sometimes it takes some time to sink in. Should you use a script? Sasha believes that everyone's situation is different. She believes it's best to share wisdom and advice that is specifically applicable to your child. Remember, you don't need to turn this conversation into a political debate with your child. As parents, we tend to put on a cheerful “life is great” smile in front of our kids, even when you might be mad at your partner, or deeply dislike your mother-in-law. There's something very unauthentic about this. Children pick up on it and they'll call you out on it around the ages of 12 to 14. The best friend's parents. Let's talk about them. They've very liberal with your child's pronouns because it's not happening to their family. People who are giving your child the okay to transition, it's another form of you having to stand up for your child to people who think they know better than you as a parent. Q: I can't deny her feelings, but I think we should stay open-minded for future options, but that's not enough for her. It feels like a power struggle. What should I do? Some parents want to avoid the power struggle, so they end up saying yes to everything. That's not the best way forward, either. When you have a kid who has been historically compliant under their parents' wishes, the power struggle is even stronger as they grow up. What are some of the best ways to approach this subject? Stella offers some advice on how to soften the elephant in the room. The power struggles are exhausting. It's very difficult to manage these temperaments and all the fun gets zapped out of the household. Q: Gender dysphoria vs. social dysphoria. Are there tips on ways to help a child with social dysphoria? Can you talk more about this? What is social dysphoria? There is general anxiety around people who are prejudging you before knowing you. You cannot change somebody's perception of you. You are setting yourself up for failure and misery if you think you can. It takes time to understand this, but as a child or young teen, it's devastating knowing that people see you a certain way and there's nothing you can do to change it. Have more questions? Keep sending it our way! Stella and Sasha love answering them. This podcast is partially sponsored by ReIME, Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics:... Support this podcast

We learn so much about ourselves from the struggles and hardships we endure. Lisa also shares her knowledge about Jung and applies it to a variety of cultural events I put to her—from the Britney Spears conservatorship to the European Football Championship. They also discuss: the Jungian notion of individuation, a perpetual process of self-discovery and psychological growth; bringing the “taboos” of motherhood into the light; the complicated relationship between motherhood and creativity; Jungian dream analysis; and why the suffering we experience as parents and as individuals grants us a special opportunity to “encounter soul.”

Lisa Marchiano, a writer and Jungian analyst discusses her book Motherhood: Facing and Finding Yourself (Sounds True, 2021). In this episode, Marchiano speaks with Julian Vigo about employing fairytales in Motherhood to recount Jungian psychoanalysis through stories of descent and emergence from the well, the central metaphor of her book. Outlining Jung’s concept of individuation, the lifelong process of discovery and experience of meaning in life, Marchiano expands individuation to include the openness of the subject to learning about the self. Discussing motherhood in the context of family and culture, Marchiano distinguishes between individuation and the current cultural drive towards individuality, noting how the current seeking out the “authentic self” is anything but authentic. Underscoring the importance of “sinking down into our embodied selves” in the context of the narrative of motherhood where sacrificing one’s youth is part of the experience of caring for a child, Marchiano notes that “feeling more ordinary” sits in diametric opposition to the contemporary “discovery of the self” which often revolves around a victimhood narrative.
