This week Jim O'Shaughnessy (Website | X) joins Humans On The Loop to carry our first on-record conversation on Infinite Loops into bold new terrains! Jim is one of the most renowned investors and asset managers of all the time and the author of several hugely best-selling and influential books on investing, including What Works on Wall Street, Invest Like The Best, and Predicting The Markets of Tomorrow. He also founded the first online investment advisor and holds the patent for “ the origination and fulfillment of stock investment portfolios over a worldwide computer network.” (You heard right!)After decades of success in wealth management, he left his company in the care of his son Patrick and launched O'Shaughnessy Ventures — a firm that combines “Jim's deeply rooted interest in all things art, science, investing and tech with his long-held desire to establish positive sum scenarios designed to help promising creators and their inspiring ideas succeed, regardless of age, location, job history or level of education.”Last fall when I was on his show, we played a game of mind-jazz about “how we can live curious, collaborative and fulfilling lives in our deeply weird, complex, probabilistic world.” For this discussion, I wanted to rotate the axis of our exploration and learn how Jim's personal experiences have contributed to the frame through which he engages life. Sweeping across scales from candid autobiography to team inquiry into some of the wickedest problems — like how we foster meaningful relationships and balance achievement with humility — we covered a lot of new ground.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and benefit from a fresh take on the mind — and heart — of one of the most exemplary mavericks I know.If you find value in this conversation, please like and subscribe (YouTube | Apple Podcasts | Spotify), leave a comment, and consider supporting my mission to help us cultivate wisdom in an age of magical technologies. Episode 105: In this conversation, Kate sits down with author and entrepreneur Paul Hawken ti explore the multifaceted role of carbon in life and talk about his new book, ‘Carbon: the Book of Life'. It's an episode challenging the conventional narrative that reduces carbon to an errant molecule within the atmosphere and connects it back to the molecule that flows through 99% of all substances on earth. Paul and Kate discuss the importance of recognizing the complexity and interconnectedness of life–encouraging a shift from reductionist thinking to a more holistic understanding of our relationship with the environment, advocating for transformative actions rooted in compassion and connection while recognizing humanity's role. They also discuss the power of language, the potential of possibility, and some of the incredible innovations we're embarking on. In this episode, we welcome Dr Iain McGilchrist back to the show. Dr McGilchrist is a psychiatrist and writer, who is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context. He is the author of several books, including the international bestseller: “The Master and His Emissary”, and most recently: “The Matter with Things”. In this conversation, we explore: — The limits of idealism — Why the term “unconscious” is a misnomer and why we should be referring to it as the “superconscious” instead — The extent to which it can be said that we are “co-creating” reality — Why values are not relative — and Dr McGilchrist's thoughts on how they may be built into the structure of being itself — Iain's response to skeptics who say life has no meaning and his view on the root causes of the major crises facing our world. And more. You can learn more about his work at https://channelmcgilchrist.com/. --- Dr Iain McGilchrist is a Psychiatrist and Writer, who lives on the Isle of Skye, off the coast of North West Scotland. He is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context, that of the whole of our physical and spiritual existence, and of the wider human culture in which they arise – the culture which helps to mould, and in turn is moulded by, our minds and brains. He was formerly a Consultant Psychiatrist of the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley NHS Trust in London, where he was Clinical Director of their southern sector Acute Mental Health Services. Dr McGilchrist has published original research and contributed chapters to books on a wide range of subjects, as well as original articles in papers and journals, including the British Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Telegraph and The Sunday Times. He has taken part in many radio and TV programmes, documentaries, and numerous podcasts, and interviews on YouTube, among them dialogues with Jordan Peterson, David Fuller of Rebel Wisdom, and philosopher Tim Freke. His books include Against Criticism, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning, and Ways of Attending. Hello, and welcome to Entangled! The podcast where we explore the science of consciousness, the true nature of reality, and what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience.Today I'm joined by Chance Gardner, artist and producer of the Magical Egypt series. In this conversation, we discuss pioneer of ancient Egypt research, John Anthony West, and how his book Serpent in the Sky influenced Chance's interest in Egypt. We consider the two models of ancient Egypt, and the importance of icons and symbols. We discuss Eastern philosophy as top down and Western as bottoms up. Next, we discuss the principle of “As above, so below”, and the significance of organic geometry. From there, we discuss the neters of Egyptian mythology as “principles”, not “gods”. We talk about Edgar Mitchell's kundalini experience returning from the moon, and the concept of different planes of self. Chance considers cities as people farms, predicated on us not knowing our true nature. We consider the 128 sidhis known to the ancient Egyptians, serving as deeper organs of perception.Chance describes Angkor Wat as the stairway to heaven, and how it contains the secrets of kundalini. We discuss devas and asuras, and what they tell us about the history of humanity. We then discuss esoteric art and the recurrence of the third eye in Eastern spiritual traditions. From there, we talk about white and black magic and differentials in power. We discuss how the meaning of myth has been inverted, and consider evil as an interruption to the organizational pattern. We then discuss fraternal orders and ceremonial magic. Chance and I consider where humanity is within the yuga cycle, and reference the Three Body Problem. Chance discusses mandalas and their impact on brain coherence, and how hieroglyphics serve as a lesson in syncretism.Next, Chance explains how he first met John Anthony West and get involved in Magical Egypt. We talk about the age of the Sphinx, and theorize about its missing partner. We discuss the moon voyages and whether the public footage of those events has been edited and censored. Chance describes the hypnogogic realms and how the mind unfurls in higher dimensions. We consider the intersection of Egyptology, intelligence agencies, and the phallus of Osiris. Chance describes anamnesis as the recognition of fundamental truth. We then discuss how Heka differs from our traditional understanding of magic, and discuss hierarchies of consciousness. Chance describes how ceremonial magic attracts more nefarious individuals like Michael Aquino, founder of the Temple of Set. We discuss Disneyland and Club 33, and the tradition of human sacrifice.Next, we talk about the relationship between Egypt and Atlantis. Chance describes how the ancient Egyptians used sacred art to record the structure and functioning of consciousness. We end this conversation discussing how the brain is built to work in symbols. This Outro is titled “How Did the Egyptians Know Consciousness?” and begins at episode 81. For long-time listeners of Future Fossils, not much will really change — philosophical investigations in the key of psychedelic futurism, voyages into the edges of what is and can be known, and boldly curious riffs on the immeasurable value of storytelling and imagination have always characterized this show. Many of the episodes I've shared in this last year especially were, effectively, preparations for this latest chapter and play as large a part in my ongoing journey to synthesize and translate everything I've learned from years of independent scholarship and institutional work in esteemed tech, science, and culture orgs…But we are no longer waiting for a weird future to arrive. We're living in it, and shaping it with every act and utterance. So in this “final” episode of Future Fossils before I we bring all of these investigations into the domain of practical applied inquiry, it felt right to ramp from FF to HOTL by sharing my talk and discussion for Stephen Reid's recent online course on Technological Metamodernism. This was a talk that left me feeling very full of hope for what's to come, in which I trace the constellations that connect some of my biggest inspirations, and outline the social transformations I see underway. This is a rapid and dynamic condensation of the big patterns I've noticed in the course of over 500 hours of recorded public dialogue and a lively primer on why I'm focusing on the attention and imagination as the two big forces that will continue to shape our lives in the worlds that come after modernity. It is also just the beginning.Thank you for being part of this adventure.✨ Support & Participate• Become a patron on Substack (my preference) or Patreon(15% off annual memberships until 12/21/24 with the code 15OFF12)• Make a tax-deductible donation to Humans On The Loop• Original paintings available as thank-you gifts for large donors• Hire me as an hourly consultant or advisor on retainer• Buy (most of) the books we discuss from Bookshop.org• Join the Future Fossils Facebook group• Join the Holistic Technology & Wise Innovation and Future Fossils Discord servers• Buy the show's music on Bandcamp — intro “Olympus Mons” from the Martian Arts EP and outro “Sonnet A” from the Double-Edged Sword EP• Read “An Oral History of The End of ‘Reality'”, my story mentioned in this episode.✨ ChaptersChapter 1: Reflections & Announcements (0:00:00)Chapter 2: Co-Evolution with AI and the Limits of Control (0:12:49)Chapter 3: Poetry as the Beginning and End of Scientific Knowledge (0:18:06)Chapter 4: The American Replacement of Nature and the Power of Narrative (0:24:05)Chapter 5: The End of “Reality” & The Beginning of Metamodern Nuance (28:58)Chapter 6: Q&A: Myths, Egregores, and Metamodern Technology vs. Wetiko & Moloch (0:34:52)Chapter 7: Q&A: Chaos Magic & Other Strategies for Navigating Complexity (45:59)Chapter 8: Q&A: Musings on Symbiogenesis & Selfhood (0:50:18)Chapter 9: Q&A: How Do We Legitimize These Approaches? Dr Iain McGilchrist (neuroscientist, psychiatrist, polymath, author of The Master and His Emissary) devised a thesis that sets out how the two sides of our brains can affect the way we both interact and create the world. The left hemisphere is a narrow, extractive, problem-solving “machine” that divides and conquers things, fails to see our part in the world and to fathom beauty, awe and responsibility. Our civilisation, Iain says, has become ruled by a left-brain mentality, which is killing us and leaving us “wretched”; we need to put the right side back in charge! Iain is an associate of Green Templeton College in Oxford and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal Society of Arts. His 2009 book Master and his Emissary became a cult read and the recent follow-up, The Matter with Things took him 12 years to write (and is 600,000 words long!). In this chat we cover why societies start out creative, happy and flourishing (right-brained!) but switch left and destructive as they expand; the secret to living a well and happy life and how to find meaning and beauty in a world we possibly can't “fix” (in the left-brain sense of the word). Nate and David open the show discussing the neurology of character change, then interview journalist Hanna Seariac, who has spent 2024 investigating the fentanyl crisis in rural Utah. Drug overdose deaths in Utah involving opioids have doubled in the last five years. In the first article of her series, “The rural Utah community at the crossroads of the fentanyl epidemic (https://www.deseret.com/politics/2024/08/10/fentanyl-crisis-in-rural-utah/),” Hanna explores small towns that have seen the devastation of opioid addiction and fentanyl first hand. How did we get here? What can be done to stop this horrifying epidemic from destroying more lives and families? Hanna searched through years of data and interviewed more than 20 people connected to the crisis, including those in recovery, former fentanyl distributers, law enforcement officials and recovery specialists. With the second article in the series, Hanna speaks with five Utahns who have nearly lost everything to fentanyl (https://www.deseret.com/utah/2024/08/10/drug-addiction-recovery-in-utah/) and how they have managed to rebuild their lives and find the strength to not only overcome addiction, but to help others. What if the stories of the stars had more to tell than just our zodiac signs? Join us for a reflection on the Great Round project, where we journeyed through the mythic elements of each astrological sign with extraordinary guests like Rick Levine, Micheal Meade, and Melanie Reinhart. We've wrapped up a year of exploring these cosmic archetypes, and now, as the myths urge us onward, we're setting sail into broader realms of mythology and cosmology. Special thanks to our collaborator, Faye Northgrave, whose support was invaluable along this enlightening path.In this episode, we ponder the deeper "why" behind our work, drawing insights from Ian McGilchrist's "The Master and His Emissary" and Leonard Shlain's "The Alphabet vs the Goddess." We'll examine the delicate balance between the brain's right and left hemispheres, and how the modern world's tilt towards logic over creativity impacts us all. We also weave in the ancient Greek myth of the Cyclops, inviting you to journey with us through the celestial tapestry of astrology, Greek mythology, and depth psychology, enriching our appreciation of the soul's voyage through the cosmos.Episode Artwork: Grabáu d'Erasmus Francisci zu Nürnberg (1627-1680) Kiklop, 1680Podcast Musician: Marlia CoeurPlease consider becoming a Patron to support the show!Go to OnTheSoulsTerms.com for more.
In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom podcast, Stewart Alsop hosts David Weinstein, former Chief of Staff at the Near Foundation. They cover a range of topics including the Near Protocol and its scalability, the intersection of AI and crypto, the importance of propositional truth, and the future of learning with AI. David shares insights on the limitations of technology in solving existential problems and explores ideas for a new kind of Wisdom School that focuses on holistic education and collective intelligence. Find out more about David Weinstein on Twitter at @DW_Stein and his Substack at davidweinstein.substack.com. Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation! Timestamps 00:00 - Introduction and welcome to David Weinstein, former chief of staff at the Near Foundation, discussing topics like Near Protocol and Wisdom School. 05:00 - Explanation of the Near Protocol, its launch in 2020, and its role as a scalable layer-one blockchain. 10:00 - Discussion on Near Protocol's relationship with AI, mentioning co-founder Ilya's background and work on the "Attention Is All You Need" paper. 15:00 - Exploration of AI and crypto, their intersection, and the concerns about the power of AI being centralized. 20:00 - Propositional truth and the role of crypto in data provenance, touching on John Vervaeke's concepts. 25:00 - AI's limitations in solving existential problems and technology's role in addressing surface-level issues rather than root causes. 30:00 - Discussion on holding multiple truths and the importance of paradox, with references to Ian McGilchrist's work on the Master and His Emissary. 35:00 - Quantum mechanics and its implications, comparing it to classical physics, and the influence of the unconscious on the conscious mind. 40:00 - Speculation on the future of books and learning with AI, including the possibility of interactive, conversational learning experiences. 45:00 - Discussion on the potential fracturing of the human species into new tribes based on technological and spiritual integration. 50:00 - The role of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in creating a permissionless, decentralized truth and value layer. 55:00 - David's vision for a Wisdom School, emphasizing more accessible and practical education, collective intelligence, and new governance models using crypto. Key Insights 1-Near Protocol's Scalability and Innovation: David Weinstein explains how Near Protocol was designed to address scalability issues seen in other blockchain protocols, such as Ethereum. By incorporating the best features from various existing protocols, Near aims to provide a more efficient and unified user experience, where complexities are abstracted away, making blockchain technology more accessible to end users. 2-AI and Crypto Synergy: The discussion highlights the synergy between AI and crypto, particularly through the lens of Near Protocol's origins in AI. David underscores how AI's need for high-quality data and micropayments led to the creation of Near Protocol, and he envisions a future where AI and crypto together ensure data integrity and democratize access to advanced technologies. 3-Decentralization as a Check on Power: One of the key themes is the role of decentralization in maintaining checks and balances on the immense power of AI. David argues that crypto, through its decentralized nature, can prevent the concentration of power within closed institutions, ensuring a more open and equitable technological landscape. 4-The Limits of Propositional Truth in Technology: Stewart Alsop III and David discuss the concept of propositional truth, as highlighted by John Vervaeke, and how crypto can aid in establishing verifiable truths. However, they also recognize the limitations of technology in addressing deeper, existential truths and human experiences that go beyond mere data and computation. 5-The Role of Paradox and Struggle: The conversation delves into the importance of paradox and struggle in human life. Drawing from Ian McGilchrist's work, David emphasizes that while technology can solve surface-level problems, it is the existential challenges and paradoxes that drive human growth and fulfillment, suggesting that these aspects should not be overlooked in the pursuit of technological advancement. 6-Future of Learning with AI: Both Stewart and David explore how AI could revolutionize learning by creating more interactive and personalized educational experiences. They envision a future where learners can engage in bi-directional conversations with AI representations of authors and thinkers, making education more dynamic and tailored to individual curiosity and needs. 7-Emerging Cultural and Technological Paradigms: The discussion touches on the potential for humanity to fracture into new cultural and technological paradigms. With the rise of distinct memetic tribes and advancements in AI and genetic technologies, Stewart and David foresee a future where diverse human experiences and ways of knowing lead to a more complex and multifaceted societal evolution.
In this insightful episode, Dr McGilchrist discusses how his hemispheric hypothesis may help to account for the widespread addiction in our society. Dr McGilchrist is a psychiatrist and writer, who is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context. He is the author of several books, including the international bestseller: “The Master and His Emissary”, and most recently: “The Matter with Things”. In this conversation, we explore: — The extent to which we may be entering into the third major decay of Western civilisation and how Dr McGilchrist's hemisphere hypothesis may help to account for this — The differences in how the two hemispheres attend to the world and how we are becoming an increasingly left-hemisphere dominated society — The three most important ingredients for holistic human flourishing — Dr McGilchrist's views on the “sacred” and whether or not we can view values such as goodness and truth as being embedded into the structure of being itself. And more. You can learn more about Dr McGilchrist's work by going to: www.channelmcgilchrist.com --- Dr Iain McGilchrist is a Psychiatrist and Writer, who lives on the Isle of Skye, off the coast of North West Scotland. Mindfulness: a technique for training your brain to reflect on what it thinks and why. It can help us make smarter decisions, and can even get the House of Commons to stop shouting at each other quite so much. Magic! But can it save the planet? Today's guest is Jamie Bristow, co-founder of the Mindfulness Initiative - an amazing organisation bringing the technique to the heart of policy and parliament. Jamie's trained MPs on skills of compassion and self-reflection, and thinks (as do I) that we could all benefit hugely from a bit more time spent thinking about thinking. Before World War II, there was no risk that we could very quickly destroy the entire habitability of human civilization. That was brought into being with very powerful technology, nuclear weapons. And for the first time ever, we had the ability to make a series of bad decisions and radically change the possibility space of the world" - Daniel Schmachtenberger "Where there has been a significant drop in IQ, the insult is almost always in the right hemisphere. So, it's very important that the right hemisphere should remain the position of the master. And as long as the emissary follows the direction of the master that sees more, it's very helpful and useful. It's a good servant of a very poor master." - Iain McGilchrist "The right hemisphere seems to be more in touch with presence, whereas the left hemisphere is more about re-presentation, representing something that is abstracted out of the living world." - Iain McGilchrist "The prevalence of meaninglessness in modern society can be linked to a lack of purpose and belonging, a critical factor in the development of the metacrisis." - John Vervaeke Chapters with Timestamps [00:00:00] Introduction to the Metacrisis [00:01:04] Defining Metacrisis and Initial Thoughts [00:08:26] The Role of Brain Hemispheres in Human Experience [00:21:29] The Meaning Crisis in Modern Society [00:30:45] Human Mind and Cognition in the Metacrisis [00:39:42] Exploration of Etiology and Psychological-Environmental Interrelations [00:58:26] Redefining Purpose: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic [01:08:16] Hemispheric Imbalance and Its Impact on Civilization [01:15:25] Rebalancing Power and Wisdom in Influential Figures [01:39:05] Navigating the Dance of Reason, Authority, and Power [01:53:19] Imagination in Rational Thinking [02:02:45] Philosophical Awakening and Global Issues [02:14:55] Human Responsibility in the Evolution of the Divine [02:34:15] Fostering Global Wisdom through Pluralism [02:39:25] The Intersection of Religion and Scale [02:55:29] Revitalizing Religion for Modern Challenges [03:05:56] Reimagining Education and Institutional Structures [03:14:24] Embracing Beauty and Sacred Obligation Timestamped Highlights [00:01:04] - Daniel Schmachtenberger introduces the metacrisis topic and its significance. Iain McGilchrist's book The Master and His Emissary was that rare thing: a bestselling classic of modern philosophy with genuine relevance to human life. It's sequel, The Matter With Things, takes McGilchrist's core insights into the nature of the mind and brain and explores their relevance for the myriad problems of modern life and civilisation. Drawing together his insights as a scholar and practitioner of medicine, psychiatry, neuroscience, philosophy, theology and the arts, and directly addressing our contemporary malaise and the future of life on earth, McGilchrist returns to the podcast to articulate a compelling argument for a new philosophy of living. I've spoken with many guests about the harms of marketing invasive, experimental, life-altering procedures to children in the name of so-called “gender affirmation.” But the cosmetic surgery market's thirst for young blood doesn't begin and end with its exploitation of gender dysphoria. Simon Esler exposed the connections between adolescent angst, self-harm, body image, and this sociopathic industry in his new film, “Cut: Daughters of the West,” which examines the rapidly growing manufactured demand for labiaplasties and other surgeries based on the lie that female bodies should be altered in pursuit of the latest trends.Simon Esler is a seasoned actor, writer, filmmaker, unschooling father and longtime truth teller on a mission to win the ongoing war against free thought & human liberty. With over 15 years of experience as a theater maker, 5 years as a professional content creator and a background as a former minister, I uplift hidden truths using deep insight and laughter as weapons. In Episode 300 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Dr. Iain McGilchrist. Most people know Dr. McGilchrist for having authored “The Master and His Emissary” a book about what we popularly refer to as “the Divided Brain” and its role in the making of the modern world. It is Dr. McGilchrist's view that we have systematically misunderstood the nature of reality, because we have depended on the aspect of our brains that is most adept at manipulating the world in order to bend it to our purposes. It's the same part of our brains that is most proficient at constructing models or representations of the world and doubling down on them even in the face of falsifying evidence. In the conversation that follows you will learn how the brain is divided into two hemispheres: the left hemisphere, which is designed to help us apprehend the world and thus manipulate and control it, and the right hemisphere, which is designed to help us comprehend the world — to see it for all that it is in its richness, nuance, and glory. The problem, according to McGilchrist, is that the very brain mechanisms which succeed in simplifying the world so as to make it more responsive to our ambitions for power and control have become the primary obstacles to our understanding of it. The consequences of this imbalance can be seen all around us in our ecosystems, our systems of government, our economies, and within the fabric of our very own societies. The rise of narcissism, paranoia, our obsession with categories and discrete identities, the rise in depression, the policing of language, and the panopticon of surveillance and control are all symptoms in Iain's eyes of the tyranny of the left-hemisphere made manifest in the world around us. The first hour of our conversation is devoted primarily to understanding the physiology of the divided brain and how to recognize each hemisphere's contribution to the synthesized world-picture that we call reality. In the second hour, which is available to premium subscribers, we examine the various ways in which the dominance of the left-hemisphere is manifesting itself in society, as well as the deeper philosophical questions that have concerned humanity since time immemorial. We look at the ‘stuff' of which the cosmos is made – time, space, motion, matter, and consciousness, – as well as why we might see it as divine in nature. We also explore its apparent paradoxical nature—a paradox that McGilchrist suggests has generally resulted from the clash between the ways in which the right and left hemispheres construe reality. This was an absolutely wonderful conversation and despite some of the audio challenges that we dealt with on Demetri's end of the microphone, we are confident that you will walk away from it with a sense of enlightenment, inspiration, and perhaps, even a new perspective on the world and our place in it.
