“They will remain shut away behind a hedge of thorns. The journey in search of soul is difficult and even dangerous because it requires that we relinquish the certainty of what we think we know and what we have been taught for generations to believe. It means surrendering the desire to be in control and opening ourselves to a quest, a path of discovery. Many myths and fairy tales emphasize the need for surrender and trust in the strange non-rational guidance offered by animals or shamans on the quest. As the hero follows their guidance, so the hedge opens, the way unfolds. Following the guidance and wisdom of the instinct is the royal road into the realm of soul.” ― Anne Baring, The Dream of the Cosmos: A Quest for the Soul   In our continuing podcast series of inviting elders into deep conversation, Quanita and Anne cover a myriad of topics. However, it all leads to acknowledging the precariousness of the present moment and that a change must come in the human consciousness for us to be able to survive. Anne Baring b. 1931. MA Oxon 1951. Women are one half of humanity, yet our voice is not heard in relation to war. We see, every day, how war is destroying human life and the precious life of the planet. This must stop. Most of us do not experience the full horror of what is happening. But those who are ordered to fight and kill, if they survive, are condemned to suffering for the rest of their lives from the atrocities they have witnessed and the injuries they have sustained. The families of those who have been sacrificed live in grief forever. Mothers and grandmothers never recover from the loss of their beloved sons and grandsons, the rape of their daughters and granddaughters. Bitterness, hatred, fear and trauma pass from generation to generation. Trauma does not vanish with time but is held within the collective psyche of humanity. That is why ALL war must stop. This is a key moment in our evolution. The choices we make now will determine our future – and whether there is a future. There is only one power in the world that can eliminate war. That power is Women in service to Love. So we proclaim: We, the Women of the World, command that ALL war stops NOW!

Thomas Singer, M.D., Jungian Analyst and president of The Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism joins us to decipher Archetypal Images and explain the essential role of A.R.A.S. in collecting and curating them.  Archetypes, as cosmic blueprints, dictate universal patterns of the collective unconscious, transcending personal experiences and cultural variations. They mold our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Archetypal images are their visible expressions, emerging in dreams, myths, and cultural narratives, providing a visual language linking psyche to self. They adapt and evolve across cultural contexts.  Archetypal theory traces back to Plato's theory of Forms, which proposed transcendental ideals, or "arkhetypos" (first-molded), as the pure essence behind physical manifestations. The Swiss psychiatrist CG Jung linked these archetypes to the collective unconscious, profoundly influencing our experiences.  Archetypal images carry universal resonance, stirring deep recognition within us. Iconic images, on the other hand, reflect temporal cultural dominants. Archetypal imagery identification involves recognizing recurring symbolic patterns with deep cultural or psychological significance.  In the therapeutic relationship, archetypal imagery offers a stage for the drama of the unconscious. The analyst's role includes identifying the universal patterns in the analysand's dreams and fantasies. Interpreting these influences can free the analysand from the grip of debilitating complexes.  Archetypal images are also prominent in culture and commerce, shaping narratives and influencing behavior. They find use in brand narratives, films, religious and spiritual traditions, and even political leaders' narratives. However, they can both inspire and manipulate, highlighting the need for discernment and critical awareness.  Archetypal imagery also aids in expressing complex emotions and experiences. Expressions such as "Pandora's box," "Siren's call," and "Promethean knowledge" exemplify this influence on language and culture.  The Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism (A.R.A.S.), established by Aniela Jaffé, a collaborator of Jung, aims to preserve and study symbolism in art, mythology, and religious iconography. It provides a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and the study of archetypal symbolism. Its online platform, showcasing a vast collection of images and curated exhibits, extends the reach of archetypal symbolism, encouraging collaboration and interdisciplinary dialogue beyond the confines of analytical psychology.  HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE: “I was walking down a scenic nature trail and felt awed at the sight of ducklings and their mother in a tree. This is an edited version of an old interview with Jungian Analyst and Episcopal priest John A Sanford (1929-2005). Sanford begins by defining his own understanding of Christianity as a religion "where the mind is free to explore". He then turns to clarify some of Jung's confusing statements about evil and to defend the Privatio Boni. Sanford does not seem evil as an integral part of God but as something allowed for by the higher purposes of God. Sanford inhabits the position of his mentor and analyst Fritz Künkel (1889-1956), who launched the today mostly forgotten idea of a "we-psychology". Künkel places evil not within the self but within the ego(-centricity) of man. Sanford ends the interview by broadening the definition of individuation from an individual and narrowly psychological process to more of a spiritual and inclusive definition that includes life itself.Recommended reading: Fritz Kunkel: Selected Writings edited by John Sanford. The Kingdom Within: A Study of the Inner Meaning of Jesus' SayingsFor the full video visit the following link. In this fascinating interview, first aired April 13th 2021, Dr. Jeffrey Kiehl brings to bear two very different ways of thinking about climate change: the scientific and the psychological—and his journey as an experienced climate scientist to bring these different perspectives together. Jeffrey explains the essential features of a depth psychological perspective, why he believes this is essential today, helping us understand why we have failed to take action on climate change--and the roots of climate denial. Jeffrey identifies the shortcomings of taking a purely rational approach to climate change, why it is important to understand ways of thinking that are not purely rational, that are imagistic—based on a deeper understanding of the unconscious. He also talks about the emerging field of eco-psychology, an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the synthesis of ecology and psychology.  Dr. Jeffrey Kiehl is a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in the United States, and an adjunct professor at UC Santa Cruz, and he has carried out research on climate change for some 40 years. Jeffrey is also a Jungian analyst and his main interests today are in the areas of eco-psychology, a field that focuses on the synthesis of ecology and psychology and the promotion of sustainability. Jeffrey is the author of the book Facing climate change: an integrative path to the future, which provides a Jungian perspective on climate change.

Vladislav (Vlado) Šolc (pronounced “Schultz”) is a professional psychotherapist and Jungian analyst practicing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Vlado received training from the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago and Charles University in Prague. He is the author of five depth-psychology-oriented books: Psyche, Matrix, Reality; The Father Archetype; In the Name of God—Fanaticism from the Perspective of Depth Psychology; Dark Religion: Fundamentalism from the Perspective of Jungian Psychology and most recently Democracy and Individuation in the Times of Conspiracy Theories. In this episode, Shane and Vlado discuss the psychology behind conspiracism, fundamentalism, and mythologies. Using a Jungian framework, they examine how and why conspiracy theories become powerful psychological tools. Other topics include the religious instinct, the unconscious, morality, individuation, purpose, meaning, and psychological defense mechanisms. To understand the profound rise in conspiracy theories in recent times, Vlado explores how conspiracies function as an unconscious protective mechanism against the inferiority of consciousness and subsequently also inflates the ego. Conspiracy theory adoption is archetypal in nature and parallels mythological structures. The strong resistance of conspiracism to rational correction can be understood by examining how the “Inadequate and noncredible representations of numinous energies in consciousness unwittingly contribute to the creation of structures with notable mythological parallels” (Šolc, 2019). “Thinking is free from the unconscious influence of the Self only to the extent that it is able to recognize and to relate to numinous contents, on one hand, and to withdraw projections from the object, on the other. A symbolic perspective offers a nondismissive understanding of the reasons for strong adherence to conspiracy theories. Exploring conspiracy theories as symbols rather than rational constructs offers more fruitful solutions to our current social problems.” (Šolc, 2019) Get a Copy of Dark Religion: Fundamentalism from the Perspective of Jungian Psychology: https://www.amazon.com/Vlado-Solc/e/B07KGJYKH3 Reference Šolc, V. Shrink Rap Radio Psychology Interviews: Exploring brain, body, mind, spirit, intuition, leadership, research, psychotherapy a

Mary-Jayne Rust BIO: I am an art therapist and Jungian analyst in private practice in North London. Alongside this, I lecture and facilitate workshops on Ecopsychology in a wide range of settings. My therapy training began in art therapy in 1979. During the 1980s I worked in a men's prison, as well as with women with eating problems at the Women's Therapy Centre, London during the early years of feminist psychotherapy. These two workplaces offered diametrically opposed experiences: working in a male hierarchy with perpetrators of abuse versus working with victims of abuse in a women's collective.  This taught me a great deal about perpetrator and victim. Feminist psychotherapy helped broaden my understanding of how culture shapes our internal worlds. In the early 1990's I made several trips to Ladakh (on the Tibetan plateau) where I spent time with Helena Norberg-Hodge of ISEC.  This experience impressed on me the seriousness of our environmental crisis. I then discovered Ecopsychology, an emerging field weaving together the ecological, psychological, political and spiritual. I joined a group of like-minded therapists, and together we explored ecopsychological thinking, facilitation, and supervision. John Seed and Joanna Macy were two of our mentors in this journey. My interest in eating problems expanded into an inquiry into our collective consuming of the earth, and the relationship between mind and body, soul and the land. I became fascinated by the differences between indigenous and western worldviews and how we might enable ancient and modern to live together today. I love colour and I am a visual artist. I live in Nth London beside Queenswood, part of the forest which originally covered Britain. Highgate Hill and Muswell Hill are on the terminal moraine left by a glacier of the last ice age.  I have an ongoing love affair with swimming in wild waters. Forest and pond, kingfisher, owl, cormorant and humans; it is all these places and relationships to whom I owe my thanks for the ideas that you find here.

This week David is sharing his thoughts on the psychological significance of divination, using the I Ching, the ancient Chinese “book of changes,” as an example. I discuss the chapter written by Carl Jung on his interpretation of what is happening when someone does divination. I connect this back to what might be learned about the process of divination using Nordic Runes, by examining the process of the I Ching. I also give an example of myself divining the future of our Podcast and write jokes for Shawn since it gets lonely doing a solo podcast.See the associated blog post here: https://tworavenpodcast.wordpress.com/2022/06/04/divination-and-the-i-ching/Podcast Website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1901373 Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TwoRavenPodcast Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/betweentworavens/ Between Two Ravens is a podcast about the psychological significance of Norse Mythology. This week it is David's turn to do a short solo episode. I am reading a blog post I wrote on the topic of Fate versus Free Will, as it relates to the poem Grimnismal.
