Mack Murdoc is an incredible astrophotographer. He is completely self-taught, but that didn't stop him from having his images published by NASA's officials, being the official spokesman for OPT (the largest personal telescopes and astronomy gear company in the world), publishing a book called Secrets From the Stars, and being an award-winning astrophotographer whose work is celebrated by thousands all over the world. He also happens to be a musician and recently he got into photomicrography. So he moved from the unfathomably large to the incredibly small, and I can't wait for what work he will produce in years to come. I sat down with Mack to talk about his craft, his life, and what it means to be a creative. Enjoy. • If you'd like to support my channel so I can keep making content consider becoming a patron. Gorillaz has always been a fictional narrative of the cast of characters within it's own lore. Throughout the multitude of their music videos, there's connective tissue and character growth, but not anchored to any one contributor's experience. They are artificial by design already, but in "Plastic Beach" they really start to discuss the themes of that artificiality. With Murdoc forcing 2-D into isolation so that he can just pump out hits, and an actual robot version of Noodle (oh, also Russel is an island now?), this is them at their most corporatized and pop-centric. Murdoc is on a Roger Waters-esque power trip, and the others are starting to feel like cogs in the machine. The theatrics and fluff are exciting and all over, but there there remains a melancholy longing for authenticity throughout the album. Beyond the Gorillaz-verse though, "Plastic Beach" tackles the very real problems of environmental waste (the title referring to a literal island of garbage that exists) in much the way that "Demon Days" tackled issues of modern wars. [GROUP PICK] We've covered a variety of concept albums in this podcast ranging from deeply personal stories, to epic fantasy tales... From bands that began as a concept to bands that eventually became a concept... But in the world of music, there is one concept that goes above and beyond the rest: Gorillaz. In March 2001, they debuted their first single "Clint Eastwood," with a music video to accompany it. The video spread across MTV and VH1 like wildfire, with its intense combination of 3D and 2D animation (pretty groundbreaking at the time) and fully formed characters in their own universe; full of graffiti, spirits, and zombie gorillas. Their debut album broke across genre boundaries and started an intriguing experiment: using Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett's characters 2-D, Noodle, Murdoc, and Russel, to create a fictitious band through which Damon Albarn (lead singer of Blur) could reinvent himself. Through four music videos, they established these characters as the real members of the band, never letting slip the concept of the virtual band by highlighting themselves. For four years, some wondered if that was going to be a one off, flash in the pan gimmick, but according to Hewlett, "If you do it again, it's no longer a gimmick, and if it works then we've proved a point." In 2005, they proved their point with the release of Demon Days. Certified six times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US, Demon Days is easily their most successful work to date, and with good reason. Both by enriching the characters and mythos of the Gorillaz universe and collaborating with some of the best in the industry, Albarn and Hewlett managed to fully realize the vision they set out to create, and prove that they had a whole lot more to offer. Join Brad, Scott, Jon, and special guest Trevor Kolden (friend of Jon) as they break down all the concepts in Demon Days. Lots discussed in ep 28! Despite issues with Mac's side of the recording the guys catch up on the reboot episodes and the waste of potential with Murdoc vs Murdoc as well as unnecessary and bad FX. Nathan reviews he latest chapter of The MacGyver/SG-1 Audio Series and then its on to Season 1 Episode 5 review of Trumbo's World!
A special episode as MANY topics are discussed as Mac gets to meet Murdoc himself, Michael Des Barres!! Other topics discussed: Seeing Michael Nesmith, The 12 Doctor regenerating and ...was The Last Jedi good? The Guys debate.
