In this edition of our arts24 music show, Jennifer Ben Brahim talks to Nigerian singer-songwriter Keziah Jones as he releases his first record in over a decade: "Alive & Kicking". The album is an autobiographical journey from Lagos to London to Paris; a musical résumé of his career spanning more than 30 years. The "blufunk" singer's record features some of his biggest hits like "Beautiful Emilie", as well as two original songs. It was recorded in Lagos at Femi Kuti's studio, a symbolic decision for an artist who cites singer Kuti as one of his biggest inspirations. Keziah shares with us how he was one of the last people to ever interview the Afrobeat legend. He also talks about his love affair with France and his recent debut art exhibition at Paris's Eric Dupont gallery.

Cette idée, c'est qu'un instrument peut, et doit, continuellement réinventer une musique, déployer de nouvelles textures, amener de nouvelles nuances. C'était évident dans ses albums enregistrés en solitaire : Ragalet en 2003, Coitry? en 2007. C'était perceptible dans ses productions collectives (Vercoquin, Olympic Gramofon, Las Ondas Marteles) ou ses expériences en tant que musicien de studio (pour -M-, Alain Chamfort, Femi Kuti ou Camille). C'est tout aussi frappant à l'écoute de son nouvel album, Saturn 63, nommé en référence au dernier modèle de guitare électrique découvert lors d'une collaboration avec le Musée de la Musique. Ce troisième long-format, ouvertement porté sur l'expérimentation, est effectivement le fruit d'une longue réflexion, rendue possible à la faveur d'une collaboration entre la Philharmonie de Paris et InFiné : entamée avec «InBach» d'Arandel, celle-ci se poursuit aujourd'hui à travers un disque entièrement pensé à la guitare, un instrument relativement peu mis en avant au sein du catalogue du label français.Pendant plusieurs mois, Seb Martel a ainsi eu accès à la fastueuse collection de guitares électriques abritée par le Musée de la Musique. Là, laissé seul dans ces couloirs remplis à ras-bord d'instruments d'une grande rareté, et donc précieux, le Français a pu puiser dans les sonorités d'autres époques, d'autres continents, s'émanciper des formes convenues, bondir d'un genre à l'autre et s'associer à d'autres passionnés de la six-cordes. C'est ainsi qu'on retrouve -M-, jamais le dernier pour délaisser le format radio et aller vers des chemins moins balisés ; Vincent Ségal, dont l'éclectisme et le sens de l'exploration sonore n'est plus à prouver ; Mathieu Boogaerts, toujours partagé entre son goût pour la chanson et l'artisanat, mais aussi Martin Gamet, repéré chez Camille. Chaque son, chaque rythme, chaque texture de Saturn 63 provient ainsi de ces guitares, manipulées et triturées dans l'idée d'élargir les perspectives, de tourner le dos au confort des mélodies rapidement identifiables et de convoquer tout ce qu'il a pu jouer, écouter, apprendre, penser et ressentir en trente années de pratiques et de projets en tout genre.Rappelons que Seb Martel, né en 1975, s'est vu offrir sa première guitare par son père. Il avait 17 ans et se découvrait alors une passion, un perfectionnisme et des perspectives, alternant les œuvres musicales et les projets transversaux (pour du théâtre ou de la danse, notamment). Depuis, ce qu'il cherche à démontrer semble pouvoir tenir en trois points. Tout d'abord, par un procédé aussi audacieux qu'admirable : que la pratique de la guitare se doit d'être rythmée par des conceptions contrastées et exploratrices. « Comment réinventer la mélodie ? », questionnent en creux les quatorze compositions réunies sur Saturn 63.Le deuxième point est celui de la liberté. Il en a fait une ligne de vie, une ligne de fuite. Tout au long de ces cinquante minutes, le Français passe allégrement du rock à la musique industrielle, de la relecture de classiques d'Elvis Presley («Blue Suede Shoes») à des incartades pop du plus bel effet («My Best Friend»), sans se soustraire une seconde au cadre rigide des barrières stylistiques. La dernière question que pose Saturn 63, c'est celle de la filiation. Derrière la recherche de sonorités inédites, il n'est finalement question que de ça : l'héritage, tout ce legs laissé par ces guitares, chargées d'histoire et pourtant dénuées de toute nostalgie lorsqu'elles sont entre les mains d'un amoureux de la mélodie tel que Seb Martel. «Cet album n'existe que grâce à l'aide des équipes du Musée de la Musique, précise Alexandre Cazac, co-fondateur d'InFiné. Elles ont su réunir les conditions pour que Seb Martel puisse venir découvrir, puis essayer toutes les guitares du musée, mais aussi celles, nombreuses, qui sont cachées au fin fond des réserves.» Tout se passe en réalité comme si celles-ci n'avaient jamais pris la poussière, comme si la singularité de leur son était mise au service d'une ambition plus grande encore, en équilibre stable entre dissonances et richesse instrumentale, entre délicatesse et prouesses techniques, entre minimalisme et mélodies savamment orchestrées.Il faut donc savoir gré à Seb Martel d'avoir su maintenir une ligne cohérente entre ces multiples instruments et d'avoir capturé, sinon l'esprit, du moins l'ambiance de ces longues et méticuleuses semaines de recherche sans pour autant tendre vers l'abscons. Pensons à Heavenly, sorte de complainte minimaliste portée par les murmures de Martin Gamet et le chant spectral de la talentueuse Sabrina Bellaouel. Pensons à Soul Kiss, une mélodie tout en contrastes, aussi épurée que saisissante, soyeuse que mélancolique : à chaque fois, il n'y a pas une seule note de trop, uniquement des pas de côté, effectués aux côtés d'interprètes de prestige (Cindy Pooch, Vic Moan, Camille), justement là pour harmoniser le propos, humaniser des intentions et des idées qui, chez d'autres, sonneraient indigestes. Il faut en effet écouter des titres comme Balulow, That Yongë Child ou Blue Suede Shoes, nettement plus angoissante et redevable au blues que la version originale, pour mesurer la poésie des compositions de Seb Martel, jamais démonstratives, toujours expressives, perpétuellement sereines. La Philharmonie de Paris et le Musée de la musique rendent hommage à Fela Anikulapo Kuti, figure du «Black President» et créateur de l'Afrobeat avec l'exposition Rébellion Afrobeat #Nigeria. En amont de Rébellion Afrobeat, l'exposition qui démarre le 20 octobre 2022, la Philharmonie s'est mise à l'heure de l'Afrobeat, avec une 1ère soirée samedi 8 octobre 2022 intitulée «Lagos Meets London» avec Femi Kuti, Made Kuti et des invités comme Kokoroko, Obongjayar et Asa. Et c'est à l'occasion de ses concerts que nous avons rencontré la famille Kuti et avons organisé une interview croisée père-fils entre Femi et Madé. Fils aîné de Fela, Femi Kuti a repris le flambeau de son père et, ayant formé son propre groupe (Positive Force) durant les années 1980, transmet à son tour une musique hautement énergétique à forte teneur politique, dans le prolongement naturel de l'afrobeat originel. Il convie pour l'occasion la chanteuse franco-nigériane Asa, auteure de cinq albums solo. Femi Kuti Feat. Asa sur Arte. Fils de Femi, s'étant aguerri comme musicien au sein de Positive Force, Made Kuti a publié en 2021 son premier album, For(e)ward, qui révèle un univers très personnel, nourri de l'héritage familial pour mieux s'en affranchir. Pour ce concert, Made fait appel à l'une des plus belles révélations de la scène anglo-nigériane actuelle : Obongjayar. Pour ouvrir la soirée, rendez-vous avec l'octet londonien Kokoroko qui poursuit son ascension fulgurante avec son mélange irrésistible de jazz et d'afrobeat. Madé Kuti Feat. Obongjayar sur Arte. L'héritage de Fela Kuti est d'abord celui porté par ses enfants : Femi Kuti, l'aîné, est aux côtés de son propre fils, Made, pour la soirée Lagos Meets London, au contact de la bouillonnante scène jazz et hip-hop anglaise. Seun Kuti a, lui, pris la tête du mythique groupe Egypt 80. Tony Allen fut non seulement le génial batteur de Fela, mais aussi son directeur artistique. Une pléiade de musiciens, parmi lesquels Oumou Sangaré, Sébastien Tellier ou Cheick Tidiane Seck, s'en acquittera avec l'énergie et la générosité du maître. Et parce que tout est histoire d'allers-retours et de passages de témoins, Angélique Kidjo revisitera le Remain in Light des Talking Heads. Notre programmation propose également une pièce de Qudus Onikeku, plongée dans le Lagos d'aujourd'hui, où dix jeunes danseurs se réapproprient l'énergie de l'afrobeat. Mais l'héritage de Fela, c'est aussi une pensée politique, qui a inspiré au chorégraphe burkinabè Serge Aimé Coulibaly, la pièce Kalakuta Republik. L'exposition Trompettiste, saxophoniste, chanteur, pianiste et compositeur, le musicien nigérian Fela Kuti est aussi un penseur du panafricanisme et un activiste. L'afrobeat – le style qu'il invente mêlant rythmes yoruba, jazz, soul et funk – est une musique permettant à la fois de danser et de penser. Dans ses chansons, comme lors de ses prises de parole publiques, il dénonce sans relâche les injustices, la corruption des élites et le néocolonialisme : des combats qui n'ont rien perdu de leur actualité. Celui qui se fait appeler le «Black President» est aussi un travailleur acharné sortant jusqu'à douze albums par an et enchaînant les tournées à travers le monde tout en restant fidèle à l'Afrika Shrine, le club qu'il a créé à Lagos. Il nous laisse une œuvre majeure qui influence des générations de musiciens de tous bords, de la scène jazz au hip-hop. Après l'interview croisée père-fils entre Femi et Madé, Sodi Marciszewer se souvient de sa 1ère fois avec Fela. Réalisateur artistique, ingénieur du son et mixeur, Sodi a œuvré avec 3 générations de Kuti. Il a collaboré aux 6 derniers albums de Fela, produit la plupart des albums de Femi et le 1er album de Madé. Il est le fondateur du studio Zarma, réputé pour l'utilisation d'équipement audio vintage (Fela Rébellion Afrobeat chez Textuel). Nous nous sommes ensuite rendus chez Jean-Jacques Mandel, journaliste, photographe, collectionner d'art. Il est le premier journaliste à avoir interviewé Fela au Shrine en 1975. 1è de ses photos sont dans l'exposition. La République de Kalakuta vue par Jean-Jacques Mandel En 1975, Jean-Jacques Mandel, jeune diplômé en ethnologie, décide de créer une association pour permettre aux Français de se rendre à moindres frais au Festac, initialement programmé cette année-là. Sur les conseils d'un ami qui lui signale l'existence d'un musicien extraordinaire à Lagos, Jean-Jacques Mandel se décide à entreprendre le voyage en voiture, en traversant le Sahara, comme l'avait fait le batteur britannique Ginger Baker quelques années auparavant. Parvenu dans la capitale nigériane au terme de plusieurs milliers de kilomètres éprouvants, il se rend, de nuit, au Shrine. À la fin du concert, tard dans la soirée, Fela, intrigué par sa présence, envoie l'un de ses musiciens le chercher pour le rencontrer. À la fin de l'entrevue, il lui propose de venir l'interviewer le lendemain à la République de Kalakuta. Jean-Jacques Mandel est le premier Français à photographier le musicien. Il retournera à Lagos deux ans plus tard pour une nouvelle série de photographies et une interview publiée à son retour dans la magazine Rock&Folk. Son portrait de Fela au saxophone, devant les grillages qui maintiennent la foule des admirateurs à distance, deviendra iconique après avoir orné la pochette du double vinyle Fela Ransome-Kuti édité par Pathé en 1977, puis en 1981 celle du disque Black President sur le label Arista, dans une déclinaison noire et jaune (Extrait du livre de l'exposition : Fela Rébellion Afrobeat chez Textuel). À l'occasion de la sortie de Saturn 63, Seb Martel est l'invité de la #SessionLive pour raconter sa folle aventure parmi les guitares de collection au Musée de la musique à Paris. Une idée court dans le parcours et la discographie de Seb Martel, l'un des guitaristes les plus passionnants et néanmoins méconnus de la scène hexagonale. Cette idée, c'est qu'un instrument peut, et doit, continuellement réinventer une musique, déployer de nouvelles textures, amener de nouvelles nuances. C'était évident dans ses albums enregistrés en solitaire : Ragalet en 2003, Coitry? en 2007. C'était perceptible dans ses productions collectives (Vercoquin, Olympic Gramofon, Las Ondas Marteles) ou ses expériences en tant que musicien de studio (pour -M-, Alain Chamfort, Femi Kuti ou Camille). C'est tout aussi frappant à l'écoute de son nouvel album, Saturn 63, nommé en référence au dernier modèle de guitare électrique découvert lors d'une collaboration avec le Musée de la Musique. Ce troisième long-format, ouvertement porté sur l'expérimentation, est effectivement le fruit d'une longue réflexion, rendue possible à la faveur d'une collaboration entre la Philharmonie de Paris et InFiné : entamée avec «InBach» d'Arandel, celle-ci se poursuit aujourd'hui à travers un disque entièrement pensé à la guitare, un instrument relativement peu mis en avant au sein du catalogue du label français. Pendant plusieurs mois, Seb Martel a ainsi eu accès à la fastueuse collection de guitares électriques abritée par le Musée de la Musique. Là, laissé seul dans ces couloirs remplis à ras-bord d'instruments d'une grande rareté, et donc précieux, le Français a pu puiser dans les sonorités d'autres époques, d'autres continents, s'émanciper des formes convenues, bondir d'un genre à l'autre et s'associer à d'autres passionnés de la six-cordes. La Philharmonie de Paris et le Musée de la musique rendent hommage à Fela Anikulapo Kuti, figure du « Black President » et créateur de l'Afrobeat avec l'exposition Rébellion Afrobeat #Nigeria. En amont de Rébellion Afrobeat, l'exposition qui démarre le 20 octobre 2022, la Philharmonie s'est mise à l'heure de l'Afrobeat, avec une 1ère soirée samedi 8 octobre intitulée « Lagos Meets London » avec Femi Kuti, Made Kuti et des invités comme Kokoroko, Obongjayar et Asa. Et c'est à l'occasion de ses concerts que nous avons rencontré la famille Kuti et avons organisé une interview croisée père-fils entre Femi et Madé. Fils aîné de Fela, Femi Kuti a repris le flambeau de son père et, ayant formé son propre groupe (Positive Force) durant les années 1980, transmet à son tour une musique hautement énergétique à forte teneur politique, dans le prolongement naturel de l'afrobeat originel. Il convie pour l'occasion la chanteuse franco-nigériane Asa, auteure de cinq albums solo. Femi Kuti Feat. Asa sur Arte. Fils de Femi, s'étant aguerri comme musicien au sein de Positive Force, Made Kuti a publié en 2021 son premier album, For(e)ward, qui révèle un univers très personnel, nourri de l'héritage familial pour mieux s'en affranchir. Pour ce concert, Made fait appel à l'une des plus belles révélations de la scène anglo-nigériane actuelle : Obongjayar. Pour ouvrir la soirée, rendez-vous avec l'octet londonien Kokoroko qui poursuit son ascension fulgurante avec son mélange irrésistible de jazz et d'afrobeat. Madé Kuti Feat. Obongjayar sur Arte. Note d'intention des concerts du 8 au 16 octobre 2022. L'héritage de Fela Kuti est d'abord celui porté par ses enfants : Femi Kuti, l'aîné, est aux côtés de son propre fils, Made, pour la soirée Lagos Meets London, au contact de la bouillonnante scène jazz et hip-hop anglaise. Seun Kuti a, lui, pris la tête du mythique groupe Egypt 80. Tony Allen fut non seulement le génial batteur de Fela, mais aussi son directeur artistique. Une pléiade de musiciens, parmi lesquels Oumou Sangaré, Sébastien Tellier ou Cheick Tidiane Seck, s'en acquittera avec l'énergie et la générosité du maître. Et parce que tout est histoire d'allers-retours et de passages de témoins, Angélique Kidjo revisitera le Remain in Light des Talking Heads. Notre programmation propose également une pièce de Qudus Onikeku, plongée dans le Lagos d'aujourd'hui, où dix jeunes danseurs se réapproprient l'énergie de l'afrobeat. Mais l'héritage de Fela, c'est aussi une pensée politique, qui a inspiré au chorégraphe burkinabè Serge Aimé Coulibaly, la pièce Kalakuta Republik. L'exposition Trompettiste, saxophoniste, chanteur, pianiste et compositeur, le musicien nigérian Fela Kuti est aussi un penseur du panafricanisme et un activiste. L'afrobeat – le style qu'il invente mêlant rythmes yoruba, jazz, soul et funk – est une musique permettant à la fois de danser et de penser. Dans ses chansons, comme lors de ses prises de parole publiques, il dénonce sans relâche les injustices, la corruption des élites et le néocolonialisme : des combats qui n'ont rien perdu de leur actualité. Celui qui se fait appeler le « Black President » est aussi un travailleur acharné sortant jusqu'à douze albums par an et enchaînant les tournées à travers le monde tout en restant fidèle à l'Afrika Shrine, le club qu'il a créé à Lagos. Il nous laisse une œuvre majeure qui influence des générations de musiciens de tous bords, de la scène jazz au hip-hop. Après l'interview croisée père-fils entre Femi et Madé, Sodi Marciszewer se souvient de sa 1ère fois avec Fela. Réalisateur artistique, ingénieur du son et mixeur, Sodi a œuvré avec 3 générations de Kuti. Il a collaboré aux 6 derniers albums de Fela, produit la plupart des albums de Femi et le 1er album de Madé. Il est le fondateur du studio Zarma, réputé pour l'utilisation d'équipement audio vintage (Fela Rébellion Afrobeat chez Textuel). Nous nous sommes ensuite rendus chez Jean-Jacques Mandel, journaliste, photographe, collectionner d'art. Il est le premier journaliste à avoir interviewé Fela au Shrine en 1975. 1è de ses photos sont dans l'exposition. La République de Kalakuta vue par Jean-Jacques Mandel En 1975, Jean-Jacques Mandel, jeune diplômé en ethnologie, décide de créer une association pour permettre aux Français de se rendre à moindres frais au Festac, initialement programmé cette année-là. Sur les conseils d'un ami qui lui signale l'existence d'un musicien extraordinaire à Lagos, Jean-Jacques Mandel se décide à entreprendre le voyage en voiture, en traversant le Sahara, comme l'avait fait le batteur britannique Ginger Baker quelques années auparavant. Parvenu dans la capitale nigériane au terme de plusieurs milliers de kilomètres éprouvants, il se rend, de nuit, au Shrine. À la fin du concert, tard dans la soirée, Fela, intrigué par sa présence, envoie l'un de ses musiciens le chercher pour le rencontrer. À la fin de l'entrevue, il lui propose de venir l'interviewer le lendemain à la République de Kalakuta. Jean-Jacques Mandel est le premier Français à photographier le musicien. Il retournera à Lagos deux ans plus tard pour une nouvelle série de photographies et une interview publiée à son retour dans la magazine Rock&Folk. Son portrait de Fela au saxophone, devant les grillages qui maintiennent la foule des admirateurs à distance, deviendra iconique après avoir orné la pochette du double vinyle Fela Ransome-Kuti édité par Pathé en 1977, puis en 1981 celle du disque Black President sur le label Arista, dans une déclinaison noire et jaune (Extrait du livre de l'exposition : Fela Rébellion Afrobeat chez Textuel). Born in Burlington VT, David was inspired by the rich local music scene and started playing guitar and drums at the age of 13. David produced his first original album with his band Bubble Tribe in 1997 as a senior in high school and went on to study music at CalArts in Los Angeles, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Composition and Performance in 2001. After college David bought an aging airport shuttle bus, converted it to run on vegetable oil and toured the US with his bands The Funnies, a four piece space funk band, and Aphrodesia, a female fronted futuristic Afrobeat big band from San Francisco. David also co-founded and produced events with The Sustainable Living Roadshow, a traveling eco festival. In 2006 David helped organize a month long West African Tour with Aphrodesia and the African Showboyz from Ghana, which culminated in twonights at the legendary Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, the musical home of Femi Kuti, son of Fela Kuti. After returning from West Africa David committed to recording with Beats Antique, a trio born in the San Francisco performance underground, Burning Man and West Coast Bass music scenes. Beats Antique soon became an international touring production and has released over 10 albums in 12 years, all written and produced by the band. On a parallel track to Beats Antique David pursued a recording project with his long-time bandmate and friend Evan Fraser, which evolved into Dirtwire, a trio with the addition of Mark Revely, that tours internationally and has released 9 albums. Femi Kuti is the CEO and co-Founder of Reliance Health - an HMO using tech to make quality healthcare delightful, affordable, and accessible in emerging markets. Earlier this year they raised $40M through their Series B financing. This makes it the largest raise of its kind in the history of African health tech. Despite this success, Femi is a humble down-to-earth man. He opened up with us on the podcast last month about growing up in Ondo City, Nigeria, the child of a physician and a teacher. Even though he trained as a physician and was working as an investment banker on Wall Street, he couldn't resist the allure of Lagos, the emerging Silicon Valley of Nigeria. So he set off on his own to start a digital health venture building telemedicine technology. The remarkable moment in this story is a fateful conversation Femi had with a partner during his time at YCombinator, the most successful startup accelerator in the world. The partner asked Femi whether digital health alone could achieve the mission Femi had set out to achieve. If not, what would it take? The answer: a LOT. It would take an integrated healthcare system, an insurance program, financing, licensing, a fleet of modern clinics, and a host of third-party clinical partners. Depuis la moitié du XIXème siècle, le repas au travail s'organise, se structure, et ne cesse d'évoluer : la maison n'est plus assez proche pour que l'on puisse s'y retrancher pour le déjeuner, le repas fait le chemin inverse et c'est dans la gamelle qu'il est emporté, pour être mangé à côté de son outil de travail, ou dans un réfectoire, puis à la cantine, ou simple pause sandwich devant son ordinateur. Qui mange quoi, où et avec qui ? Comment l'alimentation au travail a-t-elle été pensée et par qui ? Comment s'est-elle structurée et en fonction de quoi ? Que racontent ces pauses casse-croûte de nous et de notre rapport aux autres ? La pause repas est-elle le lieu et le moment où le travailleur fait société, la commensalité pour ciment ? In this episode Nikki talks to live music industry veteran Ruud Berends, who started his career booking acts at his local youth centre in Holland. Launching the Paperclip agency in 1981, Ruud went on to work with some of the best alternative music artists such as Soundgarden, Dead Moon, Nirvana, Femi Kuti, The Feelies, Soul Asylum, L7 and Mudhoney. Having toured all over Europe Ruud shares stories of managing tours before mobile phones, losing equipment and artists being banned from hotels. His work for the Dutch Music Export took him to events such as ILMC, The Great Escape and Reeperbahn where he built a reputation for hosting jammed packed shows. Ruud also talks about his passion for helping to promote new artists in his work for ESNS and the European Talent Exchange Program and his achievements in supporting the music scene in Central and Eastern Europe. Being a highly regarded and respected member of the live music scene Ruud, is a regular on the international music industry conference circuit and is also the co-founder of the International Festival Forum (IFF).

This week Dan speaks with Afrobeat Ambassador, Dele Sosimi. A fusion of Nigerian traditional music, funk, African percussion and jazz instrumentation, Dele has been a mainstay in the Afrobeat scene since 1979 when he joined the genre's pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's Egypt 80 on keys. He later collaborated with Fela's son Femi Kuti to create Positive Force. In both bands, he acted as musical director and arranger which led to his role as Musical Director and Consultant for the award-winning musical FELA! at the National Theatre, South Bank in London. Based in London, Dele has more than earned his title as an Ambassador of the genre as both a musician and an educator through the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Foundation and as a Visiting Lecturer in Music and Media at the London Metropolitan University. If I say Afrobeat, what's the first name that comes to mind? Fela Kuti. The polyrhythmic prince who coined the term, and pioneered a movement that would stretch it's tentacles far beyond Nigeria and into the decades, and genres, that would follow. Afrobeat was a swarm of sounds. Western African highlife, American jazz and funk, and a big dose of Black power. It came to life with Fela but continues through his sons, and grandsons, and through the rhythms of bands all over the globe. Fela's eldest son, is Femi Kuti. As a child he would watch, then play with his father. As an adult, he has carved his own path… continuing and expanding Afrobeat through eleven albums. His latest, he paired with his eldest son, as he released his debut. And so, Made and Femi continue the legacy Fela set out all those years ago. Having Femi Take 5 is a huge honour. Afrobeat has directly and indirectly influenced so much of the music I love. Across this Take 5 you'll hear the foundations from where it was born, and the incredible stories, the sweat, and the passion that brought this movement to life.
