Today is the 200th episode of work and play with Nancy Ray. I am so excited to celebrate with you. I can't believe it. I can't believe I've done 200 of these episodes. That's crazy. I'm so grateful that you have been listening. I hope today's episode is just fun. I thought of 200 of my favorite things, which is kind of wild, and it also took me a really long time to come up with 200 of my favorite things.  But the hope was that maybe there are some things that I'm enjoying in my life that you don't know about. Maybe there's things I'm loving that you already know and love as well. Either way, I hope it's fun, lighthearted, playful, something to celebrate. I've brought a few helpers along. Amy shares about the contentment challenge she has been on (through Nancy Ray) a challenge where she committed to give up all unnecessary shopping for three months from January - April. Amy explains what God has been showing her through this challenge, and how true contentment can be found in the simple everyday experiences, and in relationship with Him. When we have God in our lives, we have been given such a gift, such a blessing! We have the opportunity to live a life that is focused on the things that bring true contentment, like the freedom to live without worry about the future, knowing that on this side of Heaven that we will not live a life without pain, sickness, and heartache, but knowing that our life is saved through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. We have a God that loves us and is for us and not against us. We have a God that wants to be in relationship with us, who loves us so much that He gave His son so that we can have life through Him. I can not imagine a greater gift than that. Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. One of the best ways I find to get through hard seasons of motherhood is to find moms who are in a similar season and are positive, encouraging, and honest. This doesn’t have to be a close friend (of course that’s great too), it can be a mentor that you don’t actually know in person. For me, there are a few podcasters and authors who I find to be incredibly helpful, especially during more challenging seasons. Even though there are millions of us in the thick of motherhood, it can be isolating and lonely. It can feel as though every one else has it all figured out and is sailing right through, when in reality, we all face many of the same challenges. Never enough time, house always a mess, tantrums at the grocery store, meltdowns at dinner time, etc., etc.. That’s why I was so excited to bring Nancy Ray to The Simple Home Podcast this week! She is on of those moms who I find encouragement in. She’s a mama to 3, soon to be 4, young kids, puts God at the center of everything she does, and tries to remain positive even in the harder seasons. You may know her as the fabulous owner of Nancy Ray Photography, maybe you’ve heard her podcast “work and play” with Nancy Ray, or maybe more recently you saw her on national television as her birth photo went viral! However you came to know her, Nancy Ray is a treat in itself and I cannot believe that she came on the show to share her heart, her story, and her incredible journey in life. It was such an honor to sit at her feet and LEARN. Learn about motherhood, marriage, finances, walking through different seasons, having a viral picture and so much MORE.   I came to know Nancy from working for the studio and film lab that developed her film. Nancy Ray photography is a Raleigh, NC based studio that offers FILM and digital photography.  Nancy teaches courses online and shares incredible tips and guidance on her podcast  “work and play” with Nancy Ray. Ever since learning of her, I have never for a moment missed out on encouragement. She is a light to this world and a true carrier of the Gospel in all she does! The title of this podcast is Work and Play with Nancy Ray, which you already know. Today, I'm excited to jump into the topic of play, because during this strange season of our lives when many of us are quarantined or under some kind of order to shelter in place for at least six weeks, I realize life is not totally clear cut in Work and Play. Right now, there’s a lot of mixing of the two. Our co-workers are our children, and we are pulling weird hours. Also, trying to be present and play with our kids and maintain a healthy relationship with our spouses while also supporting them in their work. It's just a lot. Even when it's not kind of a weird season like it is right now, a lot of times there's play in our work and work in our play, too. They do get mixed, and there's nothing wrong with that. Today, we're going to exclusively be talking about play, pure play—all different kinds of play, and why it's so incredibly important for you to prioritize it in your life and in the lives of your kids. You might be working a normal schedule right now. Maybe nothing has changed for you depending on the industry you're in, or you might be home right now with a lot more free time. Rest. It’s such a beautiful word! One of my favourites actually. The word brings warmth, breath and joy to my heart. I mean, who doesn’t love rest?! Usually when we think of rest we think of sleeping, time out, holidays and a binge session on Netflix. But, in this episode, I want to talk to you about a new type of rest that doesn’t come immediately to your mind.  What I want to share with you is a ‘rhythm’ of rest -- of soulful rest, that can transform your life. This is not a sleep, it’s not a holiday (although all of those things are very healthy and very important) it's a rest for your heart. A time to reinvigorate your heart, soul & mind.   In this episode I will share with you:  A break down of my own definition of rest, “to cease from work in order to remember, restore and return. Remember what’s important, restore what may have been lost, and return rest to others through service”.  I also breakdown what I mean by rhythm and what a rhythm of rest is. I talk about rhythm being a song and I how believe that rest needs to become a song in your life, a beat that you sync your life to.  I talk about adopting a daily rhythm of rest and what that might look like. I talk about my daily rhythm. We get really practical with ideas on how you can rest daily and have this become a routine &/or spontaneous thing each day. I share with you my weekly rhythm of rest that I call the Sabbath. I talk about why I have a Sabbath every week and why I think the Sabbath is important. I share with you briefly what the Bible says about the Sabbath and why I believe that God loves rest and wants us to rest. Despite your worldview and belief system, you’ll love this concept of a weekly rest. So don’t tune out  just because I mentioned the word “God”. This episode is for everyone - I promise! Recently I’ve been inspired to have a monthly rest pattern and I talk about some ideas for this inside this episode too.  My husband and I have unintentionally been having a yearly rest pattern. I want to share with you what this is. It’s not just a holiday, sipping kombucha by a pool (although that is great and I’m totally up for that too!). It’s about a yearly rest rhythm that aligns with my definition of rest - remembering, restoring & returning. It will all make sense to you once you’ve listened to the episode.    I talk about a few Biblical concepts in the episode that you might be interested in delving into deeper.
