In this episode of the Startup Therapy Podcast, Ryan Rutan and Will Schroeter delve into the anxiety surrounding contentment in the startup ecosystem. They question the conventional wisdom that equates contentment with stagnation and probes whether startup founders should aim for contentment as a goal. Through personal anecdotes and industry examples, they explore the influence of perpetual ambition and societal expectations on entrepreneurs. Discovering Real Meaning In The Dismantling: Nadya Hutagalung Wants You To Find Contentment

This week's guest is a huge one - the one and only Nadya Hutagalung. Activist, conservationist, film maker, model, mother and attuned citizen on Planet Earth. Nadya's experiences, her work and her own efforts to heal herself from all she has seen, encountered and felt is extraordinary, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be sharing this episode with you.Nadya's trajectory to stratospheric stardom in the mid 90s didn't come from a normal or predictive route - an Indonesian Australian child growing up in regional NSW, she was catapulted into modelling in Japan at the age of 12, and less than a decade later she was part of launching MTV in Asia as one of their first VJs. An innate connection to the natural world existed though, and before long she was sharing the stage with world leaders, heads of state and other public figures in bringing attention and awareness to issues such as wildlife trafficking and poaching, plastic pollution and the ills of fast fashion. Nadya's trajectory took a turn in 2018, when a series of stressful and life changing experiences and opportunities - from launching UN Environment Program reports, to reading an Uninhabitable Earth and a private session with His Holiness the Dalai Lama created a new set of conditions by which to continue to both pursue urgent and widespread change in reversing no shortage of problems, while also seeking to practice stillness and undertake deeper inner inquiry. In 2021 a serious and acute health condition put just about everything on hold, and before long she returned home to Australia for the first time in decades, and today, she's on the show to share in much more detail about all of this.Nadya is a fantastic guest to have on this show, and someone who represents and aligns with so much of my own thinking and the reasoning behind why I started Finding Nature in the first place. Her explanation that our society's out of control relationship to planetary boundaries is a matter of simple calculus is straight forward and clear, but what lies underneath all of the statistics and facts and rationale as to why action on any number of serious environmental problems is a broken relationship to self, to each other and to our planet. Unless we address our values, our worldviews, our beliefs, our relationships, it's hard to appreciate how this is going to end up any differently than the trajectory we're on at the moment. The other thing I wanted to chat about with Nadya was how to help people go from apathy to care, and what are the tools of inner resolve that are necessary when people do care. Because to care is to feel pain, to despair, to experience fear. They are difficult emotions and feelings to encounter and deal with, and as an attempting change maker, this has become increasingly important to focus on as the apocalypse continues to encroach with just the latest calamitous, unprecedented disaster. This time with Nadya was special. I hope from this you realise that you aren't alone in your own struggles, and that there are modalities, practices and people out there who care about who you are, how you're going as a person attempting to and making change, and that help is always available as you traverse the ups and downs of what life offers up on a daily basis. Today is Thanksgiving in the U.S., where we give thanks for all our blessings and remember what matters most. Unfortunately, we are still heavily influenced by ads that bombard us multiple times a day and the unrelenting comparison that plagues us due to social media and not feeling "enough".  How do we cultivate contentment in a world of comparison? How do we see ourselves as "enough" when it comes to our stuff, our roles, and the stories we tell ourselves? Today my guest, Courtney Florey, and I discuss these topics and much more! Do you find yourself trapped in a "one-day" mindset? Maybe you think, "One day, I'll be out of debt," "One day, I'll have enough," or "One day, I'll finally relax." We often tie our contentment to future circumstances, yet the Apostle Paul shows us a different way—contentment in the here and now.Paul, who experienced both wealth and poverty, wrote in Philippians 4:11-13 about the secret to contentment:“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content... I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”Paul's contentment wasn't based on his circumstances but on his relationship with Jesus Christ. Whether he faced abundance or need, his joy remained unshaken because it was rooted in something eternal.Contentment Is LearnedContentment doesn't happen overnight. As Paul emphasized, it's a learned behavior. By shifting our focus from earthly circumstances to God, we begin to see that no amount of money, success, or possessions will ever satisfy us. Only a deep relationship with Jesus can fill the longing in our souls.Hebrews 13:5 reminds us:“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”The Role of GratitudeGratitude plays a crucial role in fostering contentment. Recognizing what God has already done for us transforms our perspective. As Dr. Art Rainer says, “When you realize that you're entitled to nothing, you become thankful for everything.”If you're struggling to feel content, practicing intentional gratitude can shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance.Five Steps to Cultivate ContentmentHere are five practical steps to help you experience lasting contentment:Make Gratitude a Daily Habit: Begin each day by listing three things you're grateful for. This simple practice shifts your focus to what you already have.Bring Your Needs to God: Share your needs (not wants) with God. Approach Him with a thankful heart, trusting in His faithful provision.Find Contentment in Christ: Reflect on Philippians 4:11-13. Meditate on the sufficiency of Christ in meeting your deepest needs.Appreciate the Present: Pause and savor the blessings around you. Stop striving for more and find joy in the moment.Practice Generosity: Generosity turns gratitude into action. Giving to others reminds you of your own blessings and brings joy through sharing.Contentment isn't found in “one day.” It's found today in the sufficiency of Christ, a heart of gratitude, and the joy of giving.A Resource for Finding PeaceIf financial fear or anxiety is stealing your peace this season, consider our 21-day devotional, Look At the Sparrows. Sometimes when we are feeling overwhelmed, we have to ask ourselves some hard questions, like: “Am I causing my own chaos?” When we understand our non-negotiables and say yes to what aligns with our values rather than what we think others expect from us, we can enjoy contentment in our motherhood. Hey there!   I hear so many people say I will be happy when….I get this or that happens and always wanting more, more, more, but I know you can be happy right where you are right now. I truely believe that when you are walking with Jesus daily and you have this amazing relationship with him, you can be happy in whatever your circumstance may be.  There is such a joy in knowing that He is with you every step of the way.   Contentment is being satisfied and at peace with your current circumstances.  It really is an essential element of living a simpler life that you want to have.  There is also a connection between gratitude and contentment, so it is crucial that you are thanking God every day for what He has put in your life. There are so many things we take for granted and it is so important to appreciate and give thanks for each little things.   Here are three practical tips for you as a busy moms to find contentment in your daily life.  Creating a daily gratitude journal-this is something I used to do in the morning, but I now like to do this before bed because all the things throughout the day are fresh in my head and it helps to go to bed with a thankful heart Embracing mindfulness and being present in the moment-don't have your phone with you when you are doing anything with your child or even when you are together with friends.  They know that they have to compete for your attention.  Even as an infant.  Being present and intentional is critical.  I am so happy that I didn't have to worry about a phone when my kids were young-it is one less thing that could distract me. Simplifying your routines and schedules so you can focus solely on what truely matters to you in life.  Always be true to what you value and that will help you be more content.  Less is so much more.   I just wanted to share this message as we enter into the extra busy holiday season where you may get exhausted.  Remember to keep it simple and practice contentment. Blessings friend!

Are you content with your life? Or do you wish that life was somehow different or better than it is now? Friend, let me put your mind at ease. You are not alone. We've all dealt with feeling discontented at some point in our lives. If you are a believer, you know that God calls us to live with a spirit of contentment. In 1 Timothy 6:6-7, Paul shares these words with Timothy. “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” Paul reminds us that we will take nothing to heaven when we die. So we should not focus on the here and now but on the eternal. In episode 160 of Live It Out With The Planning Woman, I'll share some thoughts God has laid on my heart concerning contentment. And I'll give you some practical ways to exercise contentment in your calling.   Grab a copy of the November Scripture Writing Plan on Contentment here: https://theplanningwoman.com/cultivating-contentment-november-scripture-writing-plan/

We live in a discontented world.  True contentment is not based on your situation or circumstance. True contentment comes for the Lord. True commitment is found in understanding who you are in Christ.
