Welcome to the Good Music Show with Danny and Julius! Each episode they will give each other an album or playlist based around a theme, then talk about the music and artists that make it. They'll cover a wide spread of artists that they care deeply about: from 2Pac to Willie Nelson, John Prine to Donna Summer, Ray Charles to Future. Keeping an open mind to new styles allows Danny and Julius, as well as listeners, the opportunity to step out of individualized music bubbles and find new music to love.

Today on the Good Music Show - we make another drastic format change to discuss a "Good" Music Movie! Brick by Br...err I mean Piece by Piece is a LEGO animated documentary about the life and career of PHARRELL WILLIAMS. Directed by Morgan Neville, and starring several artists who've worked with Pharrell, we dissect the central question surrounding this movie: why?Joining us is LEGO film expert Danny Vincent, who also happens to host a few great podcasts as well. Danny V guides us through the film's journey, and we ask the hard hitting questions that everyone wants to know. Is Kelis mentioned? Do they show the hat? How much do they reveal about Williams' relationship to Chad Hugo? All of that plus extremely dated discussions of our Super Bowl predictions, Grammy's recap, and thoughts on the Lilo and Stitch teaser (not the trailer which has since come out).Link to Piece by Piece Soundtrack PlaylistPlease check out Danny Vincent's podcasts at the links below:Looking for the Ocean: A Pixar Journey: a podcast about everything Pixar with episodes featuring Danny and Julius! It Happened One Podcast: a podcast about relationships in movies! The Snub Club: a podcast about film history!Danny's Letterboxd Page: chock full of a ton of great reviews!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! S2 E7 Gordon Lightfoot's "Gord's Gold" x Janet Jackson's "The Velvet Rope" - Winter

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2025 87:24

Brrr... it's time for everyone's favorite season to have its day in court on the Good Music Show. Today we discuss two albums that make us think of winter. We start with Danny's pick which continues his trend of finding a song that deals with a season, and making the case why the album its on also represents that season. When he heard Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot - a legendary folk singer-songwriter from Canada - he thought it was the perfect non-Christmas song. This album is half new recordings of Gordon's catalog and half compilation of his Warner hits. Though a variety of seasons and weather are represented here, the warmness of both Gord's voice and the production by Lenny Waronker are a perfect sonic stand-in for a crackling fire for those cold, lonely winter months (or in Danny's case, days)Then we talk about an album that to Julius represents the sadness and introspection often brought on by winter. "The Velvet Rope" is a peak in a run of excellent albums by Janet Jackson, who unfortunately doesn't get talked about enough in today's pop ecosystem. We compare this album to current trends in pop, as well as praise the impeccable production by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Janet's experience at the time of making this album results in many songs dealing with extreme emotions and allows for the listener to experience validation and catharsis through the energetic and crisp production. Now is the time to appreciate what Janet accomplished, despite anything that may have overshadowed her art.Songs featured in this episode:Canadian Railroad Trilogy (from "The Way I Feel" and "Gord's Gold")SundownOld Dan's RecordsGot 'Til It's GoneGot 'TIl It's Gone (Ummah Jay Dee's Revenge Mix)Go DeepMy NeedSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! It's been a minute since our last proper episode, so thanks for bearing with us! We've been hard at work on two special episodes that break our normal format. Introducing "3 Album Runs." We'll devote a full episode to dive into 3 albums from one artist, discussing the music, the context in which they came out, and connecting the dots of how the music progressed over time.Today, Danny takes the lead on a series of 3 albums from the Boss: Bruce Springsteen. This run takes place in the 80's when Bruce was at the height of fame, but the uninitiated may be surprised at what they hear: a subdued demo-tape of an album and a mostly solo "bedroom" divorce album as the bread of the meaty, saucy "Born in the U.S.A." samwidge. Not only do we give our thoughts on these three albums, but we provide the context in which they came out: Bruce's arc up to this point, the state of his mental and physical health. Plus, where in the world is Little Steven, how did "A Star is Born" (2017) predict the future of popular music - and what does that have to do with Bruce Springsteen???Next week we will discuss a 3 album run from J Dilla, and then we'll be back to the regular format.Sources:"Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen"There Was Nothing You Could Do: Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' and the End of the Heartland" by Steven Hyden"Bruce" by Peter Ames CarlinSongs featured in this episode:"Born in the U.S.A. - Live September 1985""Banned in the U.S.A." - 2 LIVE CREW"Sandpaper" - Zach Bryan feat. Hello all, I am writing this a few weeks after we recorded to say this is the last episode dropping this year. Do not despair, we will be coming out strong into the new year with our 3 album-run deep dive episodes that we promised in the preview. But I just want to thank everyone who gave us a chance in our first year. We appreciate everyone who told us were listening, you know who you are - please message us "potato salad" if you read this! More season 2 is to come with new episodes planned that we will preview soon.We usually try to keep it vague but time is weird, so you are allowed to know that this was recorded almost a month after the passing of Quincy Jones, and a week after the release of Kendrick Lamar's surprise album "GMX." Julius took time to mull over a playlist that pays tribute to Quincy Jones' artistry, and willingness to allow it to be remixed and sampled by rappers, which is just one of many things to celebrate about him. Links to the playlist of songs and the song they sample below! Then we give our early reactions to GNX - an album that received mixed reviews out of the gate. We address some of those reviews and give our own takes, and what you will hear is shocking: We love it!We cap it off by reacting to some rather disappointing news about De La Soul's cold reaction to the newly released cultural biography "High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul" by Marcus J. Moore. If you listen our "Fall" episode, you'll get more context on why we felt the need to react.Happy new year everyone! So today we are featuring two albums from each of our collections.First up, Sidelong by Sarah Shook & the Disarmers. This debut album immediately grabbed Danny's attention upon hearing it, and he has been following bandleader River Shook through lineup changes and side projects ever since. Check it out if you want catchy, well-written, outlaw country style bangers and ballads. Then we'll talk Mitski, who similarly has had a very consistent output. Her 4th studio album has one of her most iconic songs, but we'll talk about how all of her albums have at least one standout pop banger for the ages. This one is full of Pixies-esque loud-quiet-loud rock tunes, mixed with some art-rock / electronic influences. Plus, emotional lyrics that could just as easily be found in a book of poetry.Since buying music directly from the artist is the best way to support them, here are links to buy these albumsPuberty 2SidelongSongs featured in this episode:Make It Up To MamaFuck UpYour Best American GirlDan the DancerComing up:Bonus9.
