Having a featured guest along for the ride makes the journey even sweeter. After all, we tend to bring our 'A' game when the guests arrive! JDR and I have been friends for quite some time now. Going back 10 years, we'd been in contact, Coast To Coast but didn't officially meet until 2011 at a gig in Buffalo, New York. He turned it out and we've been friends ever since. I kinda knew he'd be perfect for a Carefree Drive. When I dropped the idea on him it was a no-brainer. Aside from being a fine musician, Joel is a class act. He just has that vibe about him, laid back, smooth.... a gentleman. If you listen close....you'll know. Friends....the song said we get by with a little help from them. This life just wouldn't be the same without them. I've been blessed to have some good ones, one of whom has joined me on this podcast. He's on FIYAH, burnin' up the jazz charts with a couple slamming singles off of his new album, They Call Me Big N.Y. The Carefree Drive welcomes bass guitarist extraordinaire, Christian De Mesones. Chris chimes in with, among other things, his thoughts on what he considers his ideal carefree drive. I also brought a few of my other talented jazzy family and friends along for the ride. I pulled this one from my archives. Recorded back in 2014, nothing has changed, I think the message is clear....we love MOMMA!
Sitting in the Mixing Lab...had some extra times on my hands. Kinda bored and wanted to do something different other than my normal podcast. Coronavirus issues are affecting the mental as well as the physical, all this isolation and social distancing is taking its toll, so I'm trying to combat it by increasing the fun factor. Here's some jazzy sounds from outside the box, straight from the lab .... yours truly, the Mad Mixologist. ENJOY THE MIX!
Across the world terror struck in the form of a deadly virus. The coronavirus found its way across countries, borders, oceans and into our homes and communities. In order to fight this invader we had to distance and isolate ourselves yet in a sense, this virus united us in a common cause, a common fight to defeat the enemy. One World Nation, WE WILL WIN! This mix show is two hours designed to uplift and encourage and also to relieve you of some stress and anxiety. Listen to the message: We Are In This Together! God Bless and Keep Fighting!
I couldn't let Love Day pass by without dropping something although I'm a day behind. An eventful week and some untimely technical issues set me back a few days. I was going to just skip this mix altogether but a couple well-placed requests and I gave in. It's all about love right? While i was looking through my catalog for songs and song titles relevant to Martin Luther King Jr., I thought about the deep south where many of his battles were fought. Of course, three key cities involved in the civil rights movement were Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham. Along with marches and non-violent protests, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered some of his most memorable speeches in these locations. When I saw Eric's title 'Somewhere In Alabama', I was curious so I listened and instantly knew this was the song that I was searching for. Soulful, emotional and raw. Having familiarized myself with many of Martin's speeches, all that was left was to find a message that was moving, powerful and fitting. Eric's guitar work and lead in laid the foundation for Martin's delivery and as the song transitions, I carefully positioned Martin's prophetic speech. After listening to the final mix several times, I was left with an overwhelming feeling of awe of what's been accomplished and how far we still have to go. Eric after hearing the finsihed product was moved as well. Special thanks to Eric Essix, a Birmingham Alabam native who allowed me use of his tune.

When I close my eyes, whether the purpose is to settle down and relax, nap for a few or call it quits for the night and fall asleep, I like having those slow, melodic tunes by my side with the volume just right. Lullabies and ballads. It just 'does something' to you. My inquisitive nature about what that some thing is led me to do some research. We've heard it said that music has charms to sooth a savage breast. An article I found helps make sense of that adage. The National Sleep Foundation (www.sleepfoundation.org) posted the article, "Can Music Help You Calm Down and Sleep Better?" The answer is a definite yes and they go on to explain why. Music has a positive effect, an almost enchanting effect on us biologically and that is quite relevant to this mix and its purpose. So......with that info in mind, let's dive in. This will be added to the morning routine at some point. Yeah, a hot shower feels good and gets things moving. Add a cup of coffee to boost things a little more, need that kick to get everything moving in the right direction. But when I turn up the funk, the morning is on a whole nutha level. The Mixing Lab was crazy, buzzing with mad energy when I put this podcast together. Wicked bass lines, killer horns and sax, and that funky organ the Hammond B3 dropping some soul. There's some familiar cuts in there, remixed and remodeled but I won't spoil it. I'm sure you'll recognize them immediately. This mix is definitely outside of the box but like I said, there's a lot more room out there to play. Featuring music from: Jeff Golub, Mauri Sanchis, Larry Carlton, Novello, Pat Register, Dirk K, Brian Culbertson, Lin Rountree, Gerald Albright, Girl Talk, Randy Scott, Candy Dulfer, Dave C. Norman, Pieces Of A Dream, John Carey, George Benson, Chuck Brown, Marcus Miller, Frankie Smith, Soren Reiff,, Josh Vietti, U-Nam and Victor Wooten ENJOY!!
I'm vibin'....laid back, soft as cotton and silky smooth. That doesn't even begin to describe this podcast. I suggest finding some quiet place where you can listen to this in its entirety, undisturbed. Maybe even put the headphones on for total isolation and immersion. Here you'll find 2.5 hrs of pure listening pleasure. I get by with a little help from my friends. Certainly, having the former lead guitarist for the legendary r&b supergroup, The Commodores, as your featured guest doesn't hurt. Mikael Manley shared his idea of a carefree drive and provided me with his new chart climbing hit song, In All My Wildest Dreams, a remake of the classic hit song by jazz legend Joe Sample. Also included in this podcast are additional smooth gems from Mikael along with music from artists Valeriy Stepanov, Brian Culbertson, Bernard Harris, Nicholas Cole, Tony Guerrero, Gail Jhonson, Igor Gerzina, Eumir Deodato, Marcus Johnson, Les Sabler, Brian Simpson, Michael Paulo, Althea Rene, Ely Bruna, Najee, Avant, Fattburger, Tristan, Butch & Rhonda Coleman, Groove:55, Urs Wiesendanger, Sharon Robinson, Kool&Klean, Jason Carroll and the Smooth Jazz Symphony, Maysa, Jonathan Fritzen and J. White. Ya'll ready to ride....let's go!!
I've been feeling this uptempo kinda vibe lately. Maybe because the days of summer are counting down and I'm holding on to that sunshine. Midwest Ohio is certainly beautiful in the fall with all its combinations of red, orange and yellow foliage but I like feeling the summer breeze. I have to admit though that mornings are nice right now, the air is crisp and fresh, and the night aren't too bad either. Easy to fall asleep and wakes you right up in the morn. The seasons are cycling through and I have put together some pretty cool music to keep us company.
First of all, let me say this ...Push Play and Turn Up The Volume!! Featuring music from Kim Scott, Euge Groove, Frank Sutton, Norman Brown, Joe McBride, Bobby Lyle, Nicholas Cole, Cindy Bradley, Alex Bugnon, Jeff Ryan, Thierry Condor, Will Donato, Mikael Manley, Steve Cole Al Gomez, Patti Austin, Nathan Mitchell, Stanley Clarke, Paul Hardcastle, Al Turner, Jazmin Ghent, Victor Haynes, Con Funk Shun, Blair Bryant and Terence Young I've been spending more time than usual on the road, quite a bit of driving for business so I've really been immersed in the sound of music. Where I go, my sounds go. I think the isolation booth of a vehicle lets me focus on the sound quality and flow of the podcast and presents me with new ideas for upcoming shows. There's just something about the road that I feel connected to....always have. It's not all business though. There's some pleasure in there as well. You better believe I've been doing my share of Carefree Drivin' too (Lisa does enjoy taking the helm as the musical chauffeur from time to time). This show has a great feel to it...If you prefer a little more, high energy and feel good, the load this. You will get your fare share of it with an extended jazzy mix set to put the finishing touches on the show. ENJOY!!
GRP....if you don't know, you're about to find out. Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen came together to create a powerhouse, an unbelievable collection of super-talented jazz musicians back in the late 70's and early 80's. Ron Holloway, of Smooth Groove Radio...The Vibe, and I were chatting about music history like we always do and once we hit the GRP subject, we dwelled there for a while. That makes sense since their catalogue was so extensive, thus the inspiration for this show. Although this is a smidgeon of the catalog and represent only a handful of artists I think you'll like and probably remember the songs heard on this show. I didn't even get to Chick Corea, Al Jarreau and all the later additions to the label's lineup courtesy of Tommy Lipuma in the late 90's. That's what I love about music so much. So much wealth in history, stored in my music vault. Ya'll ready to ride?? Ok thennnn, let's GO!
I'm back with some more, this podcast on the heels of some 'me' time. Yep...summer brings on sunshine and vacation. Thankfully I had jus enough of both. I had a pretty nice getaway, hitting the road for about 5 hours or so. And you know I was listening to?? That's right...The Carefree Drives were loaded up back to back. Helped make that drive seem a lot shorter, smoother and enjoyable. I couldn't wait to get back home and produce another segment...so here it is. Pop this one in the MP3 player when you get on one of those long drives. This mix comes in at around 2 hrs and 40 min. I'm definitely sure it'll enjoyably help get you to your destination. Let me know... Featured on this extended podcast is music from Doc Flowers, Vincent Ingala, Pieces Of A Dream, The Sax Triplets, Larry White, Najee, Nelson Rangell, Chris Standring, Gerald Veasley, Jonathan Butler, Incognito, Althea Rene, Julian Vaughn, Art Porter, Lindsey Webster, Brian Taquin, Paul Taylor, Jeanette Harris, The Rippingtons, Chris Walker, R. L. Walker, Brian Clay, Charley Langer
It has been quite rainy this season...most of the spring and now leading into summer, which is officially here. I'm not one who is influenced that greatly by strong winds, dark clouds, torrential downpour and flooding but Mother Nature has a way of getting attention. She definitely caught mine. Not to be deterred, I turn to the tunes. There's all kinds of new stuff out there, some of which you'll hear on this show. Personally, I just try to make an interesting blend, like a 5 star chef. Cooked to perfection. Let me know if the meal was served 'just right'. Special shout to Mikael Manley, legendary Commodores guitarist and one heckuva sound man, for all those loooooooong chats and for being that brother from another mother . ENOY THE MIX!!
Beauty in the dark.....it piques the curiousity, the need to know. There's much to say about the silhouette of a woman, the shadows of mystery. Lurking in the dark, she's poised somewhere between the shadows and the light. For some it's a mystique that's attractive and sexy, For others, possibly even dangerous. Perhaps there's some magical magnetism that, one way or another, draws us closer. Her name is....whatever she wants it to be.
OKAY!!! I'm LISTENING! Stop hitting that 'WE WANT MORE' button (although honestly speaking, I LOVE the attention). Here it is....listen and enjoy and feel free to share/repost. I'm not including the playlist this time, I found out someone has not been doing their due diligence and has been duplicating my flow. There's truth in the saying that "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". But then again, imitation doesn't necessarily mean duplication, does it? Anyway, hit me up, let me know what you think about the mix. Some of the finest in smooth jazz assembled here at the hands of yours truly, The Musical Chauffeur.
Always putting my jazzy twist on things....and of course, 'IN THE MIX', Funnin' is a one of the 30 minute jazz mixes I put together for a short stint on a radio network several years back. It was challenging and exciting to do something different and spice up the show at that time. It was my 30 minutes to show off my skills. The shows producer loved the mixes and kept me on. Unfortunately that whole thing came to an abrupt end. It ended up being a stepping stone for bigger and better things. No regrets...its all about the music
It's easy for me to admit I fell in love with this woman at some point a long time ago. Like so many others, I still have much love for her even now. Phyllis captured me with that beautiful voice and captivating beauty. My "Sophisticated Lady". The One who has the amazing ability to make me remember, recall, reminisce, reflect and forget, leaving behind those sad days and difficult times. Rather instead I found solace in and coolin' with Phyllis and those collabs with Pharoah Monk, McCoy Tyner, Norman Connors and Michael Henderson. This tribute recalls the amazing class and beauty of Phyllis Hyman, a star whose light faded too early and tragically. Depression and cocaine were her demons and her suicide left us devastated, asking, ourselves How and Why? This mix takes me back to the eve of our meeting at the legendary Blue Note in NYC. I sat at her feet next to the stage and gazed up at this statuesque beauty, even taller with her signature headpiece. Post performance I was blessed to present her with a dozen roses. Definitely one of my life's most memorable moments. Many years later I can feel that night and recall my nervous sweaty palms. I smiling because she left me with something....a few special precious moments in time. My preference here is to play her ballads, some of which may be more unfamiliar and obscure so for some you may be hearing new grooves. That's alright. Believe me, it's all good! So here it is...hoping to see you again angel. Maybe we can Meet On The Moon. If you loved her like I did, drop a comment or two below. ***INTRO*** Here's That Rainy Day But I Love You Falling Star The Answer Is You No One Can Love You More Hold Me Somewhere In My Lifetime Be One You And I I'm Truly Yours Give A Little More Obsession Groove With You Betcha By Golly Wow Can't We Fall In Love Again When I Give My Love This Time Hurry Up This Way Again Old Friend I Refuse to Be Lonely Meet Me On The Moon
THE SHOW MUST GO ON....... In spite of the fact that I practically lost my voice due to a battle with a cold, and physically was a little drained, this is where the rubber meets the road. Time to put in some work, after all, mentally I was feeling pretty good. Good enough to take a Carefree Drive. MUSIC BE MY HEALER! If you happen to be a little under the weather, maybe the change of seasons got ahold of ya, then this show is for you. Get your Kleenex, sit down, get comfy and hang with TheJazzman for a while. Today, I just had to bring this mix back....it's full of bass and some funk. One of the great bassists, Victor Bailey passed on today at the young age of 56 and I can see him, feel him and HEAR him still thumpin his bass, the latest addition to the heavenly orchestra. Victor fought the good fight, doing his best to stay in this realm with us but God and life had the last say. His body was afflicted with a disease that slowly caused him to lose control of his muscles, a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. He'd been battling this for over 25 years. This is funky which is how I'm going to remember Vic.. You'll be missed REST IN PEACE VICTOR BAILEY
As I move through my early 50's, I recognize more and more samples of music from back in the day. This helps to keep the music from my era alive and well and is a constant reminder that that music was made to stand the test of time. Its refreshing to see the new school/old school connection. I just love the sound of R&B and neo-soul. Cats like Raphael Saadiq, Babyface and Rahsaan Patterson making sure I get fed regularly. Of course when you put together a set that has some old and new, it's the sound that ties it all together. This set is a musical bridge and weaves just that type of pattern. If you like that type of music then you'll enjoy. I'm not going to spoil it by listing the artists/songs. If you know your music, you're right in there. There's always a surprise or two when you turn me loose and of course, the mixes have to flow like butter. I spun this one for SsassyRadio about five or six weeks ago and in case you missed it here it is for your listening pleasure. Sit back, relax and enjoy! Reggie TheJazzman
"I have decided to stick with love, hate is too great a burden to bear." -Martin Luther King Jr. January 15th, a great man with a greater love was born. Focused, he lived with a purpose burning within him and a determination to fulfill his destiny. He had a dream. Unselfish, he gave his life knowing that it would propel and further that dream. "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends". What manner of man was this? This mix recognizes the strength, courage, committment and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr through spoken word, sound clips and song. When you listen, listen with an open mind and an open heart. During this mix, try to walk a few steps with Dr. King and recognize how he's influenced your life and touched the world. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr...thank you! The dream continues......... President Barack Obama is part of the dream fulfilled. After having served two terms, many of us are sad to see him go. Undeniably, we're privileged. We've lived and been a part of history, part of THE DREAM. Certainly, to say the least, Martin would have been proud and I'm sure, from his heavenly home, his light brightly shines. SPECIAL NOTES: While I was looking through my catalog for songs and song titles relevant to Martin Luther King Jr., I thought about the deep south where many of his battles were fought. Of course, three key cities involved in the civil rights movement were Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham. Along with marches and non-violent protests, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered some of his most memorable speeches in these locations. The rain.... It was one of those days....again Cloudy and wet, certainly a mood changer from the previous summer day, one of clear skies and sunshine. Rain can be a mood changer and as the light rains fell upon us all day, rather than darken my mood, it provided the perfect ambience for this mix. It was a summer storm that brought with it subtle claps of thunder and just enough flashes of lightning to separate the grey clouds from the red evening sky. This all got me to thinking about nostalgia...old times, old friends and old school music. Reminiscing about life and the good ol' days. These are just the kind of days that lend itself to that. This music set incorporates the finest artists in jazz with some pretty cool interpretation of the classic tunes. You'll recognize them I'm sure. Good weather...the term is relative. It's hard to reinvent Christmas every year since the very nature of the holiday is tradition (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Sure, the songs are classic and timeless, we've been listening to them since our childhood and they have sentimental value. My nature requires that I spend a fair amount of time outside the box, thus this mix. Taking the familiar and combining it with some unfamiliar keeps things interesting, and then slammin' it all together 'in the mix' takes it up a notch. Kinda like seeing the wrapped beautifully wrapped gift....anticipation building of what's inside. Well, wait no longer...press PLAY! MERRY CHRISTMAS and ENJOY THE MIX! This gospel mix takes you to church from start to finish. This is the prelude to Sunday's Gospel Brunch The 'REAL' Soul Food and the inspiration for that series. Modeled after a Sunday morning church service, the only thing missing here is the collection plate. I've mixed quite a few but this one, for me, is still THE ONE. God's Blessings To You! ENJOY!! Technology.....sometime it gets the best of us and it seems like its always the wrong time. While trying to get this show completed I lost my ability to record my vocals so missing on this show is quite a few of my qups but I managed to get a few in there. Usually I announce the artists/songs that you here but you'll have to check the playlist to get that info. Now, I've got some troubleshooting to do.
