Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 623 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian's birthday flamethrower bonanza and Stratgate continues. It's Brian's birthday as we record this and the chaps sing "Happy Birthday" in two different keys while Blake tells us all about his former meth lab renovation life and Brian shoots trees with fire. We have to talk about Fender again as Thomann, one of the world's largest music retailers, have fired a legal salvo in retaliation to the cease and desist letter situation.Blake considers destroying a guitar and it opens up a new dimension to the great Fender debate and Richard exaggerates. Have you ever used a string bender? The guys discuss how to approach playing with a B bender. Robert Keeley has teased a new tube-based pedal and the guys dig it.The Cure have headlined the Isle of Wight Festival and Richard has observations, and GAS for Reverend guitars. The guys debate whether festivals are still something they enjoy or whether those days have passed. It's Prime Day again and the guys are not too impressed. They were impressed with a new magnetic pedalboard design however.Nitro Surge, Marketers Ruin Everything, Red Mild Chili Poppers, Angine de Poitrine, Brian Is a Diva... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Courses and DIY mods:https://www.bluesguitarmethod.com https://www.betterguitartone.comhttps://www.wamplerdiy.comhttps://www.guitarpedalcourse.comCheck out Oliver Effects:https://oliverfx.co.ukYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Support the show

Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. Today, I'm joined by my co-host Eric Urrea (Marina City, La Armada) and returning guest Zack Albetta (Broadway's & Juliet , Working Drummer Podcast) for another installment of The Drum Panel. In this episode: Angine de Poitrine and the rise of microtonal math-rock weirdness Masks, costumes, performance art, and the word “gimmick” Why musicians can be so quick to dismiss what they don't understand Cynicism as both a shield and a trap The danger of bonding through negativity How touring can breed complaints if you let it Choosing to be positive without being fake Why “I don't get it” is sometimes enough Art, context, and the death of context Whether success in music is ever really linear --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today
One of this show's favourite weeks of the year is whenever North By North East (NXNE) festival is taking place. Over the space of a week, emerging music and artists take over the city of Toronto, with venues putting on showcases of some of the most exciting names in the Canadian underground, along with a number of international artists as well. The cooler, more underground cousin of SXSW. And by goodness, is Canadian music having a year.Tune in to hear our coverage from over 4 days of the festival, bringing you a few highlights and music from some of the artists we managed to see, running between venues. We've also got exclusive interviews with the bands Black Paint, The Satisfactory and Neon Bloom!Apart from NXNE, we also have an interview with the irreverent Welsh rock trio The Bug Club, who are undertaking a pretty extensive Canadian tour starting this week! If you spot me at the Toronto show on 18th, come say hello, as most bands in small venues say, I don't bite. Note: the podcast version of this show mentions a few more NXNE bands we had to cut for time on the live show, but I'll include link to here. The magic of podcasting. Music this week by:Angine de Poitrine, Angelique Dancel, Black Paint, Teenage Joans, The Satisfactory, C. Ruth and the Mango Street Trio, Neon Bloom, The Bug Club.More interviews to come next week, and look out on the Yellow Brit Road socials for Milo and Nolan's photography from NXNE. Unfortunately our faithful host Dave Hanratty is unwell this week so Sonic Architect Adam Shanahan flys the plane solo for his first jaunt on the podcast-proper alone, but luckily he's joined by his close musical collaborator, soul artist Melina Malone to guide him. As well as her counsel, Melina will be providing a key to open the door for us to the neo soul genre, it's characteristics, its heavy-hitters and some of her favourite selections for her Top 5.As always, the fun never stops on the NO ENCORE Patreon – Dave and Andy's recent Film Club adventures saw Andy snared in a web of exasperation as they discussed Trap, which is available now, and next week Adam will be taking a look at another Danish band for his upcoming Album Club as he examines Spleen United's Neanderthal all the way back from the turn of the financial crisis. As little as €5 per month gets you full bonus and ad-free access and there's a sweet 10% discount if you sign up for an annual membership. We roll on!ACT ONE: The preamble, in which Adam attempts desperately to do a good job in Dave's absence.ACT TWO (15:34): Trevor Dietz RIP, Primavera's Thursday washout, more Ozzy avatar chat, Russian Angine de Poitrine impostors spotted, Duffy's triumphant and imminent return to the stage, Daft Punk definitely not reuniting and Prince's famous and mysterious vault is finally being cracked open – it's the news.ACT THREE (49:19): Top 5 Neo Soul. “Your true home is a place you have not yet been but have sensed all along…” - Brian Zahnd, from Unseen ExistencesBrian Zahnd is no stranger to controversy, but it's possible at this time that one of the most controversial things he could say is that there is a reality that neither science nor our senses can reliably define; existences that are unseen. This is the very topic of his latest book, and we that book as a launching pad to talk about the impact of Greek and/or Platonic thought on the New Testament, the microtonal rock of Angine de Poitrine, the potential exhaustion of revivalism, and much much more. While listening to the pod, check out Unseen Existences, Brian's Substack (especially his four-part companion to Unseen Existences, The Reverend), and while you're at it, bookmark The Silent's relevant album, Unseen. To watch instead of just listen, either check it out on YouTube or click below.
Keep honking, piggies: I'm listening to whatever rockslop the algorithm just sicked up for me!So we've been circling a certain topic for a while now – in order to be fashionably off-cycle rather than just late to the party, of course – and we've finally done enough muck-raking to present you with our red-hot take. It's verifiable: your favourite DJ is a psyop. We jest, mildly. But why is it so satisfying to point to popular things and call them a psyop? And it's not just Geese, the perfectly solid rock band that launched a thousand hysterical thinkpieces. Angine de Poitrine? Évidemment. Rita Ora? Innit. But what about the current numerical titans of dance music? Your Josh Bakers, Kettamas, Silva Bumpas and, of course, your Freds Again? What does it take to reach the premier league in the age of algorithm? In this episode we break down the tectonic shifts underway in the game of selling yourself, and how video clips, vlogging, ‘content seeding' and engineered virality are becoming standard promo tools from the mainstream to the underground. Is your favourite DJ paying low four-figure sums to have someone manufacture a viral moment during their next set? Honestly, they might be. Should No Tags join the party?* Let us know!—*If you do think we should join the party, these things don't come cheap. Eric Olander on how the Global South is reading the Beijing summitsThis week I'm joined again by Eric Olander, founder of the China Global South Project, which runs the most indispensable English-language operation going for understanding China's engagement with Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.I came in with a plan: map, region by region, how the capitals of the Global South were reading the back-to-back Trump and Putin visits to Beijing — relief at a steadier U.S.-China modus vivendi, or foreboding at a G2 condominium squeezing shut their room to maneuver. Eric dismantled the premise within ten minutes. The honest answer, he warned me, is that most of the Global South simply isn't watching the way we are — and the disappointment turned out to be the most interesting thing in the room. What looked like the absence of a story was the story. I'd built my questions around one assumption about what mattered; Eric had built his answers around another, and I cop to being schooled.Once you set the summit framing aside, what Eric's contributors are actually seeing comes into focus: Japan racing to recenter an Asia-Pacific security architecture, a region quietly de-risking from an unreliable United States, fresh cracks in the BRICS, Justin Yifu Lin's “three moves” for Chinese manufacturing, Latin America's “find out” phase, and a Gulf where the Chinese setback so many in Washington insist must exist simply isn't there. We get into all of it — and close on the summit as a remarkable piece of theater, the first since 1945 at which no one quite knew who the most powerful person in the room was.04:27 — The dominant mood: pro forma coverage, exhaustion, and bigger problems at home08:15 — Breaking news: the paused $14B Taiwan arms package and the canceled Colby trip11:15 — The dog that caught the truck: China and the costs of a receding U.S. umbrella13:00 — "Constructive strategic stability" — new equilibrium or just choreography?28:23 — The snub: Beijing sends only an ambassador to the BRICS meeting in New Delhi37:56 — Africa: tariff-free access, the trade imbalance, and Kenya's "collapsed" exports44:34 — Justin Yifu Lin's "three moves": move up-market, localize, move south51:00 — Latin America's "find out" phase in Panama, and very low China literacy57:35 — The Gulf after the war on Iran: who really won?Paying it Forward:Boston University's Global Development Policy (GDP) Research CenterRecommendationsEric: A “rabbit hole” of books on Xi Jinping, currently Party of One by Chun Han Wong (after Kevin Rudd's On Xi Jinping).Kaiser: Angine de Poitrine, a “microtonal math rock” duo from Quebec — think Frank Zappa meets King Crimson — possibly the thing to breathe new life into progressive rock.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode we look at the phenomena of hugely successful artists refusing to play the songs that made them! First among these is Radiohead, whose “Creep” launched them onto the world stage. Others include The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Madonna. Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is The Stranglers' 1977 debut, the excellent “Rattus Norvegicus”, yet another punk record from the mid-70s. Mick loves this album for its energy and refusal to bow down to supposed “punk” rules. We also look at some of the highlights of The Stranglers' outrageous career to this day. In Rock News, Jeff examines the success (or otherwise) of a Quebec band called Angine de Poitrine, known for their complex, “microtonal” compositions and absurdist public image, featuring oversized papier-mâché masks and black-and-white polka-dotted costumes. Imagine! Jeff also has a look at this year's inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, including Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, and Joy Division, and our Rod Stewart moment looks at his relaxed attitude towards death. Plenty there for everyone!

Tommy enjoys brewing, cooking, and making music, and we get into just about all of that, including his top five guitarists. Xentar is a free online tool where you can interact with microtonal guitar tablature, connecting a host of features many had long since given up on. You can create your own guitar songs and share them (with playback), explore scales and EDO's (even harmonizing within that scale!), loop patterns on other instruments, and even collaborate with other musicians! This band broke the internet… and you're not ready for who's behind it. In this episode, we dig into Angine de Poitrine, where one player is somehow covering guitar and bass at the same time, stacking warped microtonal riffs while the drummer drives these unpredictable, high-wire grooves. It's chaotic, it's locked in, and it keeps you on edge the whole time. Trust us… the reveal is worth it.
Today's Song of the Day is “Fabienk” from Angine De Poitrine's album Vol.II, out now.
