In light of D'Angelo's passing, we're replaying our episode on Voodoo from June 2025. This Grammy-winning, genre-defying album changed the sound of R&B, soul, and hip-hop forever. And it has seriously influenced the playing of so many musicians, including our own Adam Maness. From Questlove's behind-the-beat drumming to Roy Hargrove's horn arrangements, Voodoo is packed with the kind of deep musicality that jazz musicians truly connect with.Twenty-five years later, Voodoo still hits harder than many albums of its generation. We've heard from so many of you in the comments on Spotify and YouTube about what this album, and D'Angelo's music, means to you. Tell us how D'Angelo has influenced you in the comments on Spotify or YouTube: https://youtu.be/AYqmFNF2s0U Watch Open Studio perform D'Angelo's "Spanish Joint": https://youtu.be/CG5yqmkj0G4
In this episode we invite the highly entertaining Lisa Verrico to join us from her native Glasgow and talk us through her career from IPC's Vox magazine to The Times. Commencing with her memory of first hearing Prince's 'Little Red Corvette' as a kid on holiday in Spain, our guest recalls her days of raving (and working in radio) before describing how she got her foot in the door at Vox. Hair-raising Mancunian encounters with Happy Mondays and Mark E. Smith serve as preludes to Lisa's hilarious 1994 interview with Oasis. We hear her "bootleg recording" of the Gallagher brothers' competing impersonations of Mick Jagger on the band's impromptu rendition of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. A broad discussion of what the '90s meant for pop culture takes in Lisa's memories of Oasis hanger-on Evan Dando and of the altogether different My Bloody Valentine. Clips from a 1989 audio interview with the latter's Kevin Shields and bandmates prompt reflections on MBV's extraordinary sound and their somewhat dysfunctional relationship with Creation's Alan McGee. We return to Lisa's own story by asking her what happened after Vox folded in 1998 — and how she wound up reviewing (and interviewing) for The Times for 25 years. We also discuss how much the live music experience has changed in that time. Finally, we hear about our guest's 2019 trip to L.A. to interview 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making Billie Eilish. After paying heartfelt tribute to cult neo-soul star D'Angelo — note that news of the death of former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley only reached us after this episode was recorded — Mark quotes from a 1984 interview with jazz giant Wynton Marsalis and Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on Joe Muggs' 2011 interview with the great James Blake. Many thanks to special guest Lisa Verrico. You can find her writing in The Times. Pieces discussed: Oasis: Shake'n'vac, Evan Dando: Baby I'm Bored, Evan Dando: "I get the feeling I'm being bullshitted", Evan Dando: The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, Evan Dando: Different Drum, My Bloody Valentine audio, Billie Eilish, D'Angelo: Soul Asylum, On D'Angelo and the Birth of Neo-Soul, D'Angelo: Black Messiah, Wynton Marsalis: The Hottest Lips in America and James Blake: Point Blake.

(superfly.fm)
Lew ApolloTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Minnesota / Austin musician Lew Apollo. In this episode, Lew and I chat about his growing up in Minnesota, and what made him decide to move to Austin, Texas. Naturally, I ask him about his tattoos, and what they mean. Then we move onto a good ol' Texas burger slap fight! Lew and I go round and round, /1/4 pound for 1/4 pound about who has the best fast-food burger in South Texas; Whataburger or P. Terry's. Then we get into his music. Lew's new debut album is called Fool's Gold, and is a 9-track journey through heartache, acceptance, and finally contentment. We discuss a few of the tracks individually, and he even lets me play his most talked about song from this record. Lew does talk about learning from and being mentored by Austin local legend Blk Odyssy. We touch a bit on Lew's previous E.P. called Jungle, and what that title means to him. Sadly, we do discuss some rough subject matter related to his father's passing, and how this tragedy reframed the feeling and meaning of some of the songs he wrote before the event. Lew Apollo has a unique, original sound, and I can't stop playing his music in my house! Special shout out to Victor Gaspar, Orb Studios, and Rey Roldan at Rey Bee Publicity.
This month we chillax and play a selection of sounds that has captivated Black Music for the last 50 years. Hope you can get involved and have a listen. The RH Factor's Hard Groove might sound uncontroversial to modern ears, but in the early 2000s it was revolutionary. With this record, Roy Hargrove broke away from the straight-ahead jazz revival of the Young Lions era and created something entirely new. Hard Groove blended Roy's trumpet with the voices of R&B and soul heavyweights like D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common, artists whose platinum-selling albums (Voodoo, Mama's Gun, Like Water for Chocolate) already featured Roy's melodic horn playing and orchestral arrangements. With Hard Groove, Roy flipped the script: instead of lending his sound to the hip hop and neo-soul world, he invited those artists into a jazz record. The result was a landmark project that blurred genres and redefined what jazz could be in the 21st century. You'll Hear It has been nominated for a Listener's Choice award for Best Music Podcast at the Signal Awards.

When does Afro Blue and Smells Like Teen Spirit belong on the same record? When it's a Robert Glasper album! In 2012, Glasper's Black Radio brought together artists like Erykah Badu to bring a jazz standard, Afro Blue, back into the popular music canon. Black Radio hit #1 on the jazz charts, while simultaneously reaching #4 on the hip-hop R&B charts and #15 on the Top 200. The Blue Note pianist has been bending genres since the 90s, bringing together the best of traditional jazz and weaving it seamlessly with R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock & roll. And it all fits, because Glasper is equally at home in all of these categories. He grew up listening to all kinds of music, like Nirvana, Billy Joel, Busta Rhymes -- everything. Black Radio, he says, was a way to put his "life on wax". Rob Harvilla from 60 Songs to Explain the 90s: The 2000s joins Adam and Peter to dive into what makes this album great, and how it refutes from any attempt to categorize it. From the J. Dilla Influence, to Casey Benjamin's album-defining flute, to the Erykah Badu of it all, you'll never hear this album the same way again. And this album inspired what is possibly our best YHI outro yet. Let us know if you agree!
