On this week's DJD classics episode, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis catch up with one of his longtime competitors from the NASCAR Cup scene, Washington's Greg Biffle. After a successful career in NASCAR that spanned nearly two decades, Biffle quietly exited the sport following the 2016 season.Greg shares his story of how he got into NASCAR, where he ultimately headed south to Tucson, Arizona to participate in the NASCAR Winter Heat Series. It was there that he met and befriended NASCAR Hall of Famer Benny Parsons, who was impressed with the unknown racer's performance. As the story goes, weeks later Parsons was conversing with Jack Roush in the garage area at Michigan International Speedway about Roush's NASCAR Truck team. Parsons recommended Biffle to Roush, and soon after he received a call from Geoff Smith, the president of Roush Racing at the time. After a lengthy chat, a contract was faxed over to Greg and the next two decades of his racing career were in motion.Greg and Dale speak about the decline of Roush Racing and the factors that led to the team falling behind the competition. Greg explains the team failed to progress with the direction of the sport and it took them a long time to catch up once they were behind. The lack of winning equipment ultimately played a role in Greg leaving Cup racing in 2016, a year earlier than his contract stated. The interview also touches on some of Greg's rivalries over the years, and the stories behind them. Greg details his dust-up with Jay Sauter at Richmond and the monetary fine and points penalty that fell on him because of it. As a result, when he and Kevin Harvick made contact at Bristol a year later in 2002, he knew he wanted to avoid a fight at all costs. They also discuss his famous feud with Boris Said at Watkins Glen in 2011, and how a perfectly thrown water bottle caused a huge blow-out. Dirty Mo Media is launching a new e-commerce merch line! In the third and final installment of our interview with Tony Liberati, Rambo goes to victory lane with Jimmie Johnson … but NOT before the future NASCAR Hall of Famer has already agreed to go Winston Cup racing with Hendrick Motorsports. Tony sticks with Herzog Motorsports and wins another couple of races with Todd Bodine, before economics forces the team to shut its doors while still in the hunt for the Busch Series championship. We then take a deep dive into the July 19, 2001 issue of Winston Cup Scene. There was a seismic fallout from Jimmy Spencer's comments that Dale Earnhardt Jr's recent Daytona win was somehow fixed and Tony Stewart was feeling the heat after HIS Daytona tirade. And … oh yeah … by the way … Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson won at Chicagoland. NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand. He explains why and how Daniel Suárez and the No. 99 team have turned a corner and flipped a switch ahead of the playoffs, why they were experimenting throughout the spring and summer and reflects on the option tire used at Richmond. Squid dives into his background in racing growing up in the midwest, working on street stocks and super late models in and around Chicago and how he wound up being a first-generation racer before getting hired at Richard Childress Racing after college as a data acquisition engineer. Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with longtime NASCAR competitor Jeff Green to learn more about how he rose from the short tracks of the Midwest to having one of the most dominant seasons in the NASCAR Xfinity Series history. After growing up in the footsteps of two racing brothers, David and Mark, also of NASCAR fame, Jeff ventured down a path that landed him at Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 1995. When he took a call from the Intimidator himself, DEI was at an interesting point in its history, where Dale Sr. was looking to retire from part-time NASCAR Busch Series racing and put someone in the car full-time. Jeff and the No. 3 team had moments of brilliance and strong runs, but he felt it was still “Dale Sr.'s team” and he decided to try out a different opportunity.Jeff found victory lane for the first time in his NASCAR Xfinity career with Diamond Ridge Motorsports at Las Vegas in 1997. The team was excited about Jeff's success and rushed him into the Cup Series, which Jeff explains was a difficult transition to make, and before long the team shut down. His glory years in the Xfinity Series came from 1999 to 2001 when he had two runner-up points efforts and a dominant 2000 championship run, where he won by over 600 points. The success brought an opportunity with Richard Childress Racing and Jeff, feeling like he was in the prime of his career, jumped at the chance to drive for a premier racing team. But when a run-in with his teammate Kevin Harvick ultimately got him fired, Jeff began a journey of moving from team to team, looking for stability. Along the way, he spent time back at DEI as well as at Richard Petty Motorsports driving the famed 43 before retiring from driving in 2021.Dale and Jeff reflect on their years spent racing each other in the Xfinity ranks, Dale's first memories of Jeff at DEI, late model racing trips, and Jeff's current day-to-day activities.

This week in the second and final installment of our interview, Tim Fedewa talks about changing up the game plan at Talladega and how the decision led to some painful injuries. Then … it's on to his career as a spotter and his relationship with Kevin Harvick. We then tackle the massive April 25, 2002 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jason Keller win at Talladega, although the fields for both events were decimated by HUGE wrecks. There's a ton of reaction over Kevin Harvick getting suspended for a race and Jack Roush's near-fatal airplane crash, as well as features on team owner Travis Carter, Buck Baker, and Dale Inman. Mention his name today, and most will recognize Tim Fedewa as the longtime spotter for Kevin Harvick. But like so many other folks up in the spotter's stand, Tim began his career as a driver in and around his home state of Michigan. He eventually moved south to go Busch Series racing with Ray and Diane DeWitt, who took him to his first win in 1995 at Nazareth. Tim wound up at BACE Motorsports, where he had a front-row seat to the chaos … and success … of teammates Randy LaJoie, crew chief Steve Bird, and team owner Bill Baumgardner. Tim then ran into his OWN contractual issues with the team, which prevented him from landing a ride that turned out to be one of the most successful in Busch Series history. We then tackle the May 25, 1995 issue of Winston Cup Scene. A bad storm gets things kicked off at Charlotte the weekend of The Winston Select all-star race. Jeff Gordon fires up his Hendrick Motorsports crew before going out and putting it to the rest of the field in the main event. Kenny Schrader races his way into the all-star race, just a week after losing part of his thumb in a freak accident. And then has a bit of a rough encounter with Mr. Excitement, Jimmy Spencer. Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip try to make a run on Gordon in the final ten-lap shootout but wind up running into each other and crashing. Plus, future high-ranking NASCAR official Elton Sawyer gets whacked with a penalty. Tim Fedewa wins the first race of his Busch Series career at Nazareth by stretching his fuel supply and staying out of the carnage in the first half of the event. Chad Little weighs racing against law school … and racing almost wins, before momma and daddy step in. Finally, Kyle Petty REALLY wants to get to Memphis on time during his annual cross-country motorcycle ride, so he can visit Graceland, home of his hero, Elvis Presley. The NBA All Star Game is floundering. Can it be saved? The Daytona 500, NASCAR's "Super Bowl," ran with a prominent racer now in the Fox Sports booth and we're ready to talk on those subjects and more on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast."Host T.J. Rives is back iwth his takes and guest Tyler Jones joins him with more. Tyler hosts his own "Jones Report" podcast and is part of the NASCAR themed "Let's Go Racing with David Starr!" show and podcast.First, T.J. and Tyler discuss the NBA All Star game suffering from a lack of audience, largely because the game (not unlike the NFL Pro Bowl or the NHL All Star Game) is now a farce. What can be done to help it? Next, prominent driver Kevin Harvick made his official debut for Fox Sports on the call of their biggest race, the Daytona 500. The guys discuss how he did and will he be willing to criticize other drivers, etc.?There's also discussion on ESPN's stranglehold on the College Football Playoff and will the ESPN/Warner Discovery/Fox Sports streaming idea get off the ground? Hear it all on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.
