It's hard to deny the power of NieR's music. Keiichi Okabe (and his company MONACA) created something remarkable in 2010 with the music of NieR Gestalt & Replicant. In 2017, lightning struck again with the soundtrack for NieR: Automata, a masterwork of instrumentation and emotion. There's a reason you can search for "NieR" on VGMdb and get over fifty results worth of albums. Original soundtracks, arrangements, multiple concert performances, and rare albums begin to cover the official releases. Then with people like Sean Schafianski, ROZEN + REVEN, and Ferdk, there's a wide variety of unofficial arrangements as well. The point is, there's a reason NieR and its music is so widely celebrated, and it's high time Rhythm Encounter had a show about it. So join Mike and the RPGFan NieR megafans Alana, Zach, and Patrick for a peek into the wide and varied world of music found in the NieR series.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Alana Hagues, Zach Wilkerson, Patrick Gann; Edited by Jonathan LoganLinks for this episode Kainé/Final Fantasy Main Theme from FFXIV (YouTube) Sean Schafianski on Bandcamp Rhythm Encounter 19 – Schmoozin' with Schafianski NieR Music Concert Blu-ray {{The Memories of Puppets}} preview "The Sound of the End" (YouTube) Tracklist0:03:53 - Kainé (Salvation) (Keiichi Okabe) - NieR OST0:06:53 - Mourning (Keiichi Okabe) - NieR:Automata OST0:37:07 - Repose (arranged by SEXY-SYNTHESIZER) - NieR Tribute Album -echo-0:43:34 - Ikō (Authority) (Keiichi Okabe) - NieR Re[in]carnation1:09:04 - Vague Hope - Cold Rain (arranged by Sean Schafianski) - CHAMBER WORKS - NieR Automata1:12:31 - Gods Bound by Rules (arranged by Kumi Tanioka) - Piano Collections NieR Gestalt & Replicant1:39:27 - The Sound of the End (MONACA) - NieR Music Concert Blu-ray 1:42:50 - Orchestra: Weight of the World (Keiichi Okabe) - NieR:Automata Orchestral Arrangement Album2:20:25 - Zach's Bonus Track!Album LinksCHAMBER WORKS – NieR Automata Our Review VGMdb Bandcamp iTunes Store / Apple Music Spotify NieR: Automata Orchestral Arrangement Album Our Review VGMdb CDJapan iTunes Store / Apple Music NieR: Automata Original Soundtrack Our Review VGMdb CDJapan iTunes Store / Apple Music Spotify NieR Gestalt & Replicant Original Soundtrack Our Review VGMdb iTunes Store / Apple Music Spotify NieR Music Concert Blu-ray Our Review VGMdb NieR Re[in]carnation Original Soundtrack VGMdb CDJapan iTunes Store / Apple Music NieR Tribute Album -echo- Our Review VGMdb CDJapan Piano Collections NieR Gestalt & Replicant Our Review VGMdb iTunes Store / Apple Music Get in Touch:RPGFan.comEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom

Experts of the Taroverse, assemble! Six was originally booked to host this podcast, but as discussions proceeded in the buildup…
We specifically tried to record this when we both had to go meet up our own friends and family so we wouldn't talk for too long. Well the episode is 3 hours and we were both late to meet our own loved ones. Oops. In the first episode since I popped too hard off into a void about Nier Gestalt and Replicant and spoiled v1.2 last month, Dorian and I discuss sure, I guess movies and games and shows but when I write these, I highlight the inane topics mentioned like why a podcast about steelbooks might not work in audio format, how Dorian lost a toenail to Hideo Kojima and didn't sue for damages, and our list of shilling for this episode is Colin Moriarty, The Game is Fun podcast and The Sonder Bombs. If anyone wants to sponsor me, I'll start giving you better scores. Oh yeah, scores are back.

23:40-24:18 Mad Men Season 2 Finale Spoilers Uplifting episode title, huh? On a very standard episode, I watched a movie. Maybe even two. A TV show? Hell, a game I think at some point. In the first episode where I don't pine over a male actor, I talk about getting rid of the albatross that is Nier Gestalt off of me, I go down to South Park the Stick of Truth to have a time, I bring chips to dip into the cheese of Goldfinger, and I think about Grease deeper than any normal functioning person should. "this one is gonna be an instant classic!" said no one ever about this episode. This is the first episode without any movies or any new thoughts on TV shows but I did include a book. People fire General Managers over bad trades, right? I should find one. In this miss of an episode, I discuss the finer points of Uno and why I might have made enemies of many people, why Texas Hold Em is the only way to play, and I finally make progress in Nier Gestalt. Is it a planar spiral, swirling against entropy ever inward toward an imperfect concentric point of consciousness? No. It is a podcast about video game soundtracks on vinyl that you will make a part of you, forever. This week we dive very deep into the NieR: Automata / NieR Gestalt & Replicant box set from Square-Enix. Paul and Anthony take the lead on this millennia-spanning endeavor, plumbing the depths of meaning from Yoko Taro's inscrutible oeuvre. We take meaning from the music and from the story, exploring themes of consciousness of communication, and we mispronounce ALL of it. Next we keep you in the know about the new releases and crowdfunding efforts in the world of vinyl. You might say that we keep your heart and mind rich, but your wallet poor. Sorry about that. Finally we discuss our relationship with video game music, or soundtracks in general, and what it means for us when we do or don't have a personal context with the music. Love is in the air, and the sounds of Video Game Grooves are the sweet music to enhance the mood. Well, we do a lot of talking so it might kill your chances at romance, but you never know! In this floral and trippy episode, we are flipping the script! We begin with our features section, and oh boy are you in for a treat! We begin with Jeremy's pick of Flower, by Vincent Diamante. The 2009 indie darling by Thatgamecompany and Sony is a good example of dynamic music arranged for a "linear" release on vinyl, and we spend a lot of time ruminating on the game's narrative, the experience, and of course the music. Next up, Anthony gushes about the very esoteric release of an obscure PS1-era dream simulation and a surreal adventure game (LSD: Dream Emulator and Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls Of Tong-Nou, briefly discussed on our previous show) compiled together on All Things Must Be Equal by Osamu Sato. We explore the nature of early experimental game design on PS1, the specifics of Sato's, er, "chemical enthusiast" work, and delve deep into the 500-track (!) 90s-drenched score. Moving on to the news, DJ Lord British holds court as we keep you apprised of this low-spend releases and announcements for the prior weeks, as well as at least one cancellation of a preorder product, and the newest shipments arriving soon on your turntable. Finally, we discuss the vagaries and realities of producing products in a market of scarcity, and compare and contrast the good and the bad of being a fan in a "speculative" hobby. Outro: "Global Noise" - LSD Dream Emulator, by Osamu Sato Twitter - @vg_grooves, @ajohnagnello, @walnutsoap, @jeremy_lamont Skyrim Atmosphers (Winterhold Variant) (Spacelab 9, sold out) Resident Evil: Vendetta (Spacelab 9) Hotline Miami (Devolver store) Nier Gestalt and Replicant box set (Amazon.co.jp)

This week we host our very first guest podcaster! Everybody give a big SAS-sy welcome to Jun Chen (aka Junch) from The Big Gap. We're certain that like us, you'll find his insight a welcome addition to the conversation. In this episode, Joel gets a new 3DS XL and immediately gets to work on Super Mario 3D Land and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, but also gives his Xbox360 some love thanks to Gears of War: Judgment; Junch goes retro on us with Persona 3 & 4 for the PS2/PSP; and Dave has nothing but praise for the awesome (and slightly creepy) Playstation Plus service which gives him free games to play like Quantum Conundrum. For our topic this week we discuss the industry's aversion to Female Protagonists and bemoan the mystifying lack of games starring playable female leads. Memorable female leads are uncommon at best, and when female protagonists do get their own game they are starved of marketing dollars or discouraged from having any agency. We also touch on the role of the protagonist's gender on game narrative and the apparent differences between Western and Japanese market perception of female protagonists. If you feel strongly about anything we said in this week's episode and would like to add your voice to the conversation, we encourage you to write to us at hello@staringatscreens.org or tweet us @StaringScreens. Oh yeah, by the way, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is pretty sweet. And for the record, this episode was produced by Dave. Links: The Creepy Cull of Female Protagonists EEDAR's research on games with Female Protagonists Ico's box art debacle American vs. Japanese Mega Man box art and the more things change… Bonus Link: Why Japanese box art is better… except when it's not Errata: Beyond Good and Evil was released in 2003 for PS2, not 2006 The version of Nier released outside of Japan (simply titled "Nier") features a beefy middle-aged male protagonist trying to find a cure for his young daughter's illness. In Japan two versions of the game were released: Nier Gestalt on Xbox360 and Nier Replicant on the PS3. "Nier" and "Nier Gestalt" are identical, but "Nier Replicant" features a comparatively scrawnier and younger "bishounen" male lead as the sick girl's older brother rather than her father. Other than this minor detail the two versions are essentially the exact same game. Nier Replicant was never released outside of Japan.
