We continue to cover the franchise in chronological order, and Judgment is set early in the timeline of Gears media. In this episode we deep dive into the campaign side of the Judgment package and discuss everything from Story, Characters, Gameplay, and Presentation. Is it really the "least good" Gears of War game? During the first half of the twentieth century, the French Basque province of Xiberoa was a place of refuge, conflict, and foreign occupation. With the liberation of France in 1944, many Xiberoans faced new conflicts arising from legal and civic judgments made during Vichy and German occupation. War, Judgment, And Memory In The Basque Borderlands, 1914-1945 (U Nevada Press, 2008) traces the roots of their divided memories of the era to local and official interpretations of judgment, behavior, and justice during those troubled times. In order to understand how the Great War affected the Xiberoan Basques' perceptions of themselves, Ott contrasts the experiences of people in four different communities located within a fifteen-mile radius. The author also examines how the disruption during the interwar years affected intracommunity relations during the Occupation, the Liberation, and its aftermath. This narrative reveals the diverse ways in which Basques responded to civil war, world war, and displacement, and to one another. Learn more about your ad choices.

Happy New Year Radsters! Ringing in the year 2019, Alex & Dan look forward to the next 12 months of entertainment in the film, gaming and music industries and discuss what they are looking forward to the most. Edit: Gears of War has 5 titles in the franchise thus far. Alex mentions Gears 5 - but there is a long forgotten title between Gears 3 and 4 - namely because it is terrible (referred to as "Gears of War Judgment" - purposefully dropping the "e" also makes this a terrible title). Technically the next game will be Gears 6 - but Judgment was an intermission which most wish to forget... Not listened to our other episodes? Fear not, we have you covered: Big Screen Time! Gears of War Judgment, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City Undercover 22.03.2013
Score: The Podcast welcomes Steve Jablonsky, award-winning composer of Michael Bay films such as the Transformers film franchise, The Island and Pain & Gain; Peter Berg films such as Battleship, Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon; Keanu; Netflix's Game Over, Man; and the upcoming Dwayne Johnson summer blockbuster Skyscraper. He is also the composer of television shows such as Desperate Housewives and video games including Gears of War: Judgment, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, The Sims 3 and Transformers: The Game. Robert and Kenny begin the show discussing Ready Player One and how Alan Silvestri's score samples iconic music from the 1980s, true to the story's nostalgic subject matter. Silvestri is also scoring Avengers: Infinity War which releases this Friday. Robert shares a story about a mistake he made with Ennio Morricone and Warren Beatty while recording a score with a full orchestra in Rome. Steve Jablonsky joins to talk about his work with Michael Bay on five Transformers films, The Island and Pain & Gain — and how Bay communicates his elaborate visual style and explosions, sometimes before the special effects even exist. In Behind the Score, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross discuss how David Fincher led to a thriving career scoring films after being in the recording and live performance industry with Nine Inch Nails. Then Steve talks about the first cue with his name on it — "The Jablonsky Variations" from Tears of the Sun — and how Hans realized then Steve was destined to become a great film composer in his own right. And how films "based on a true story" or with real-life characters mean his music has to find the different kind of balance. Lastly, Steve and the guys play a sports movie edition of the game “Name That Score,” where you — yes, you — can be a winner! Plus a story about Steve's first meeting with the great John Williams. Ah, so finally, a week without hearing about Overwatch. It's lovely, isn't it? Well, anyway, Gary opens with Shadow Warrior and XCOM 2. I hear one of them goes well with a nice cold Belgian Sessions. Then again, what do I know? Brian follows with Oracle of Ages for the GBC. A classic Zelda game that he played on this thing called the GameBoy Advanced SP. Pretty archaic. It doesn't even have a headphone jack! There was also The Flame In The Flood. Justin doesn't have anything to report about EarthLock, sadly. However, he ends up giving Don't Starve a shot. With that also came Gears of War Judgment (without the 'e', of course) and Gary jumps in for that discussion. Anthony's up last and drops a bomb: he bought an Xbox One. We got Inside, Sunset Overdrive, and a game we all know (not so much) and love, Earthlock. Anthony sets the record straight on just what Earthlock is, by the way. We're all about ARGs and procedural generation on this week's discussion with Tanya (designer on Age of Conan, Dungeons of Fayte, The Secret World, Shattered Planet and Moon Hunters) and Rob (writer on ALFA-ARKIV, Gears of War: Judgment, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Playmation, and Battlefield Hardline). Our sprawling conversation includes chatbots, transmedia narratives, creating mythologies, binary morality systems, pacing in a procedurally generated game, why haven't we moved past cutscenes in games, how procedural and systemic gameplay affects development and writing, and games based on information retrieval. Tom Bissell: author, critic, video game writer. What was his path to authorhood? What inspired him to write the video game-focused essay collection Extra Lives? Gears of War: Judgment y El Museo de los Errores
This week we host our very first guest podcaster! Everybody give a big SAS-sy welcome to Jun Chen (aka Junch) from The Big Gap. We're certain that like us, you'll find his insight a welcome addition to the conversation. In this episode, Joel gets a new 3DS XL and immediately gets to work on Super Mario 3D Land and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, but also gives his Xbox360 some love thanks to Gears of War: Judgment; Junch goes retro on us with Persona 3 & 4 for the PS2/PSP; and Dave has nothing but praise for the awesome (and slightly creepy) Playstation Plus service which gives him free games to play like Quantum Conundrum. For our topic this week we discuss the industry's aversion to Female Protagonists and bemoan the mystifying lack of games starring playable female leads. Memorable female leads are uncommon at best, and when female protagonists do get their own game they are starved of marketing dollars or discouraged from having any agency. We also touch on the role of the protagonist's gender on game narrative and the apparent differences between Western and Japanese market perception of female protagonists. If you feel strongly about anything we said in this week's episode and would like to add your voice to the conversation, we encourage you to write to us at hello@staringatscreens.org or tweet us @StaringScreens. Oh yeah, by the way, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is pretty sweet. And for the record, this episode was produced by Dave. Links: The Creepy Cull of Female Protagonists EEDAR's research on games with Female Protagonists Ico's box art debacle American vs. Japanese Mega Man box art and the more things change… Bonus Link: Why Japanese box art is better… except when it's not Errata: Beyond Good and Evil was released in 2003 for PS2, not 2006 The version of Nier released outside of Japan (simply titled "Nier") features a beefy middle-aged male protagonist trying to find a cure for his young daughter's illness. In Japan two versions of the game were released: Nier Gestalt on Xbox360 and Nier Replicant on the PS3. "Nier" and "Nier Gestalt" are identical, but "Nier Replicant" features a comparatively scrawnier and younger "bishounen" male lead as the sick girl's older brother rather than her father. Other than this minor detail the two versions are essentially the exact same game. Nier Replicant was never released outside of Japan.

Today The Indoor Kids welcome Tom Bissel, author of some of our favorite video game essays and writer of Gears of War: Judgment. Plus a ton of Bioshock: Infinite talk with no spoilers.
Craig does all the heavy lifting for Indie Games this episode but comes prepared with Retro Arcade Adventure Remade, Smatter, Death Goat, and Rise of the Ravager. Sean and Craig make death traps with Terreria, the existence of Double Dragon II is questioned, and BattleBlock Theater proves to be worth the wait. Everybody throws down with the Injustice: Gods Among Us Demo, Sean wraps up Gears of War: Judgment, Sean and Jeremy blow lots of stuff up in Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, and there's plenty of shock and awe with Bioshock Infinite. Gadamy o nowym "Dniu Niepodległości", filmach Marvela i z jakiś niepojętych powodów poruszamy temat afery wokół NC+. W części Express ja wychwalam Bioshock Infinite, a Szymon słuchowisko Blade Runner zrealizowane przez Audioteke. Jest też kilka zdań o Gears of War Judgment (więcej w recenzji Szymona, o tutaj).
It's time again for Nerds Without Pants! This week, JD joins us for a very special look at growing up in the '90s, and all the great games we experienced back then. So lace up your army boots, tie a flannel around your waist, and chug some Crystal Pepsi folks, because this episode of NWP is full of attitude and is so effing XTREME! First though, we head over to Consumption Junction, where quite a bit of games are talked about. Enjoy plenty of discussion about God of War: Ascension, Gears of War: Judgment, BioShock Infinite, The Cave, and Star Craft II: Heart of the Swarm. Julian brings up Metal Gear Solid V and the danger of "prequel fatigue". We also talk about comics for a reeeally long time, as well as a bit of TV. Then we hop into the Wayback Machine for a trip through 1990-1999. There's as much as a ten year gap between the oldest and youngest members of this show, so memories and experiences vary wildly. From the heyday of the arcade to the launch of the SNES, N64, PSX, and more, the Pantsless Ones have a lot to say. Pokemon addiction! Fear of Ecco the Dolphin! Dreams of living on Dawson's Creek! All this and more await you in a most excellent episode of Nerds Without Pants! Seriously, you Ninten-don't want to miss this one. FEATURED MUSIC: Way too many to name!

Nik Florence, Wesley Mullins, Megan Hansard and Alan Ostendorf review Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider and Bioshock: Infinite. This week we also discus sponsors and financial problems.

Let's hear it for the supporting character! This week, we discuss two games based off the less popular sidekicks of major franchises. First, we have the Ballad of Baird, also known as Gears of War: Judgment. The fourth game in the Gears of War franchise has more of what you've come to expect from the franchise, which means hours of carefree body mutilation. Speaking of dead stuff, Justin leans over the campfire to tell us a scary story about the time he reviewed The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Sticking to the ghastly theme, we finish the show with a Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, the second game in a series about the lesser-loved plumber turned ghost hunter. Is Dark Moon the 3DS's killer app? Does anyone care about 3DS when we have Super Stickman Golf 2 on our cellphones? Does the video game industry have a morbid fascination with our mutual fleeting mortality? This is the third in a short series of conversations I'm hosting on the State of Games. I encourage you to listen to the first two episodes and stay tuned for the final installment, which will appear in the coming days. In this edition I talk with Tom Bissell, essayist, critic, and most recently script-writer for the new Gears of War: Judgment game.
