Vote on Twitter @bestthingever3. Lou gets into a bar fight and needs help. Ben's nowhere to be found, and honestly, he'd be no help anyway, so the only logical thing is to have one of these two 80's/90's female protagonist save him. Who will it be? What started as a discussion of female villains became an episode on “unlikeable” female protagonists in pop fiction...their words, deeds, character traits, and permutations that we relate to. In the end we ask whether we can finally put this label to rest and how the evolution of female creators and complicated female characters is making that possible. ** Sticks & Stones. We discuss the “big speeches” from these women who have fire in their bellies and chips on their shoulders: Marla Grayson from I Care Alot, the “cool girl speech” from Gone Girl, the “cerulean blue” speech from Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, Nora’s speech about anger in The Woman Upstairs and Ani Fanelli in Luckiest Girl Alive. (05:40) ** What’s Your Theme, Heather? A play on our regular episode segment, What's Your Damage, Heather?, we discuss what we like to see in our villains, what character traits we relate to more, and what that says about our own damage. In the end, these traits aren’t “unlikable” to us at all, they are relatable! Kate picks female characters who are motivated by ambition, anger and love. Carinn relates to ambitious women, women who are in control (even when they are out of control), those who go from victim to villain, and those motivated by love (sometimes!). (24:15) ** What She Said. We share some of our favorite first person quotes from female creators on this idea of the unlikable female protagonist: Koa Beck, Rosamund Pike, Anbara Salam, and Gillian Flynn. (56:20). ** Takeaways. Are we done yet ? We discuss whether the unlikable female protagonist is over. (64:30) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Daniel Pyne is the author of five novels: Catalina Eddy, Fifty Mice, Twentynine Palms, and A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar. His latest novel is WATER MEMORY. Among his many screenplays are Pacific Heights, Doc Hollywood, the remake of The Manchurian Candidate, and Fracture. He made his directorial debut with the independent film Where's Marlowe? His list of television credits (creating, writing, and showrunning) spans Miami Vice to Bosch. Pyne has worked as a screen printer, a sportswriter, an ad man, and a cartoonist and has taught screenwriting at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television for more than two decades. He splits his time between California and New Mexico. ABOUT THE BOOK - WATER MEMORY Black ops specialist Aubrey Sentro may be one concussion away from death. But when pirates seize the cargo ship she's on, she must decide whether to risk her life to save her fellow passengers. Sentro's training takes over, and she's able to elude her captors, leaving bodies in her wake. But her problems are just getting started. Her memory lapses are getting more frequent, symptoms of serial-concussion syndrome. As she plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with the pirates, she pushes herself to survive by focusing on thoughts of her children. She's never told them what she really does for a living, and now she might not get the chance. While her memories make her vulnerable, motherhood makes her dangerous.

Stay safe:)
Hey there word nerds! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Veena Rao. Veena Rao is the author of Purple Lotus: A Novel (She Writes Press), as well as founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of NRI Pulse, a popular Atlanta-based Indian-American news publication. She is in the Limca Book of Records as the first Indian-origin woman to edit and publish a newspaper outside India. Veena Rao has a background in print journalism, having worked on the news desk of The Indian Express in India, and a couple of community publications in Atlanta as editor. She has a Masters’ Diploma in Journalism and Communication from Symbiosis International University and a Masters’ in Economics from Fergusson College, India. She has been featured in several major Asian print publications including the BBC Telugu, the Hindu, Indian Express, Gulf News, the Khaleej Times, India Review etc. She currently lives in Tucker, GA. In this episode Veena and I discuss: How her life circumstances forced her creative writing to take a backseat and how she got her writing life back. What skills her journalism background afforded her when approaching difficult topics such as domestic abuse and mental illness. Why She Writes Press was a great fit for the kind of book Veena wanted to write. Plus, their #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/334

We all want to be social justice warriors, but most of us can’t punch a tank. Allison Green can, but she’s retired. And actually, she’s not sure if tank-punching is even all that useful. This week we’re talking STRONG FEMALE PROTAGONIST, an ongoing webcomic by Brennan Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag. In the first two chapters, we see Allison struggle with the idea of normalcy in a post-cape existence. Like most twentysomethings, she wonders about her place in the world, her purpose, and how to make the world better (without so much tank-punching).
Gender representation, and more specifically, the portrayal of women is a big topic right now in video games. Within the vast library of content we have to pick from, how is it that the portrayal, roles, and playable options for female gamers and game characters appear to be so narrow?
For the month of December, Sean and Derek are back to discuss three very different, very distinct, webcomics. They begin with Brennan Lee Mulligan and Molly Otertag's Strong Female Protagonist, a title that has been going strong since 2012. As described by its creators, the story concerns "the adventures of a young middle-class American with super-strength, invincibility, and a crippling sense of social injustice." Although that may roughly encapsulate the premise, the webcomic is much more sophisticated than that. In fact, the guys spend a great deal of time discussing the creators' ambitions with the story, both in terms of the art and regarding its subject matter. Derek wonders if Mulligan, especially in the fifth chapter, may be trying to juggle too much at one time, making his narrative almost top-heavy with its intended messages. Sean disagrees, but he does see the philosophical ambitions embedded in the text. And it is on the topic of philosophy that the guys segue into their next title, Corey Mohler's Existential Comics. This webcomic is notable for two reasons: it's the first gag-based, done-in-one kind of comic that the guys have ever discussed on the webcomics series, and it's as funny as hell! It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this is one of the funniest titles ever discussed on The Comics Alternative, webcomics or otherwise. Mohler uses actual philosophers themselves, and the entire history of philosophical thought, as the grist for his absurd mill. In Existential Comics you'll find the ancient Greeks playing Texas hold'em, Franz Kafka at the DMV, Diogenes encountering a commie-killing Abraham Lincoln, Albert Camus thwarting Rudolf Carnap's barfly pick-up efforts, Søren Kierkegaard at a rave, a zombie God (animated by Arthur Schopenhauer) attacking Friedrich Nietzsche, Simone de Beauvoir hosting her own cooking show, and a wide variety of philosophers trying to play Dungeons and Dragons. Finally, Derek and Sean wrap up with a look at Bucko, a short webcomic by Jeff Parker and Erika Moen that ran from 2011 to 2012. As the guys discuss, part of the fun of reading this title is seeing how Parker and Moen kept trying to outdo themselves with unlikely plot twists and characterization that built do an almost chaotic crescendo. Sean, however, isn't a fan of the story's ending, which he sees as too convenient and too predictably Scooby-Doo-like. Still, you could read Bucko -- along with Existential Comics -- as a freewheeling antidote to those holiday blues.

The Pubcast - Interviews with online publishing professionals
Molly Ostertag and Brennan Lee Mulligan are the artist and writer of Strong Female Protagonist, a webcomic that follows the adventures of a young middle-class American with super-strength, invincibility, and a crippling sense of social injustice. Dubbed by io9 one of the best webcomics of 2012, Strong Female Protagonist recently held a successful Kickstarter, achieving 762% of the requested funding needed to turn the webcomic into a trade paperback, which has since earned a distribution deal with Top Shelf. In this interview, Mulligan and Ostertag share their secret origin, how they use the superhero genre to address social issues, why they turned to Kickstarter to fund a dead tree edition of SFP, and how they're reclaiming the term "social justice warrior". This interview was recorded on November 7, 2014.

This week we host our very first guest podcaster! Everybody give a big SAS-sy welcome to Jun Chen (aka Junch) from The Big Gap. We're certain that like us, you'll find his insight a welcome addition to the conversation. In this episode, Joel gets a new 3DS XL and immediately gets to work on Super Mario 3D Land and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, but also gives his Xbox360 some love thanks to Gears of War: Judgment; Junch goes retro on us with Persona 3 & 4 for the PS2/PSP; and Dave has nothing but praise for the awesome (and slightly creepy) Playstation Plus service which gives him free games to play like Quantum Conundrum. For our topic this week we discuss the industry's aversion to Female Protagonists and bemoan the mystifying lack of games starring playable female leads. Memorable female leads are uncommon at best, and when female protagonists do get their own game they are starved of marketing dollars or discouraged from having any agency. We also touch on the role of the protagonist's gender on game narrative and the apparent differences between Western and Japanese market perception of female protagonists. If you feel strongly about anything we said in this week's episode and would like to add your voice to the conversation, we encourage you to write to us at hello@staringatscreens.org or tweet us @StaringScreens. Oh yeah, by the way, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is pretty sweet. And for the record, this episode was produced by Dave. In Japan two versions of the game were released: Nier Gestalt on Xbox360 and Nier Replicant on the PS3. "Nier" and "Nier Gestalt" are identical, but "Nier Replicant" features a comparatively scrawnier and younger "bishounen" male lead as the sick girl's older brother rather than her father. Other than this minor detail the two versions are essentially the exact same game. Nier Replicant was never released outside of Japan.
