In this episode of Retro Titans, Phil sits down with Sam Dyer, founder of Bitmap Books — the publisher behind some of the most beautifully crafted retro gaming books ever produced. From the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum to the NeoGeo and N64, Bitmap Books has become synonymous with premium retro gaming preservation, celebrating the art, culture and history of the games we grew up with. But Sam's journey started much like many of ours — with a beige computer under the TV and a lifelong fascination with games. Together, Phil and Sam explore how nostalgia, graphic design and a love of gaming history combined to create one of the most respected retro gaming publishers in the world today. In this episode, we explore: 1️⃣ The origins of Bitmap Books How a passion project inspired by the Commodore 64 grew into a globally recognised retro gaming publisher. 2️⃣ Designing books for retro fans Why presentation, print quality and visual storytelling matter just as much as the words on the page. 3️⃣ Preserving gaming history From arcade classics and point-and-click adventures to SNK and Neo Geo, Sam explains why these games deserve to be documented and celebrated. 4️⃣ Nostalgia, community and modern retro culture Why retro gaming continues to resonate with new generations, and how the meaning of "retro" keeps evolving. Sam also shares stories about launching books through Kickstarter, working with legendary developers and publishers, creating collector's editions with built-in sound effects, and why games like Sensible Soccer, Monkey Island and Metal Slug still matter today.

It basically took the side-scrolling run-and-gun gameplay, toned the seriousness WAY down - not that Contra was an uberserious indictment about the glorification of war - but it really made things much more cartoony, and it wound up being one of SNK's most popular series, with a ton of sequels and spinoffs since then. So my question to you is, what would you take and reinvent to make it more light-hearted and comical? What games, genre, movie, TV series, or books are just too serious for their own good, and would benefit from being more zany and cartoony? In 1996, Nazca Corporation released Metal Slug on the Neo Geo MVS arcade system, a run and gun game so dense with hand drawn animation that it required extra hardware just to be ported to home consoles. In this episode, we trace the full story behind it: the collapse of Irem that brought the team together, the founding of Nazca, and the two failed location tests that forced a complete rebuild of the game in six months. Our conversation explores the craft philosophy that made Metal Slug legendary, from lead artist Akio's pixel art technique to the enemy animations that served no gameplay function but made the world feel alive. We follow the game from its troubled development to its arcade success, the sequels that built on its foundation, and the eventual dissolution of the original team. Join us as we load up and find out how a small team with no budget and no real names on the credits made one of the most beloved arcade games ever made, on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.Read transcript

Tomodachi Life llega a los 13 años. Otros títulos: Fantasy Life i (móvil). Inazuma Eleven Decapolice (con cambios de plataformas). Nuevo Yokai Watch spin-off. Gran potencial creativo y humor.

This is absolutely one of the best run 'n gun games I've ever played. It's an arcade game, and it took me a little while to wrap my head around the idea that I was gonna die. A lot. But once I got over my fear of death I found myself lost in this game's charm, silly smooth graphics, and hella fun gameplay. This was my first Metal Slug, but it won't be my last.My guest this week is a living legend in the world of RTG, my pal Chris. He has been bugging me since episode 1 to cover Metal Slug 3, and I finally get why. We had a scare this afternoon where we thought we had lost the review audio, but everything wrapped up in a neat little PACKAGE and I can't wait for you to let us convince you to play this game. And before we turn into zombies, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week we talk about specific controllers for specific games. If I could get Shigeru Miyamoto to autograph one item, what would it be? And am I excited about the upcoming Bubsy collection???Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 "metal" games: Metal Gear, Twisted Metal: Small Brawl, and Metal Arms.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“Listen, I got unbelievably lucky with YouTube, and I don't know why. I still really, I mean, I know why in theory, like, people have been like, well, ‘You provide XYZ,' but I don't know why I get to do this. Like, I know that I have certain qualities that lend themselves to my strengths, that lend themselves to this medium, but it's completely and utterly luck. Putting out good videos, having a high-quality camera, a high-quality microphone, having a, you know, finding out what your skill set is that you can use. So, the thing is, I remember five years ago when I wasn't even, or well, let's say six years ago, I'd be like, they would be talking about a streamer that had a shtick. And I guess I accidentally fell back into my shtick, which was the opera singer, right?” – Marco Cammarota This episode is the second half of my conversation with voice actor and YouTube sensation Marco Cammarota as we discuss how the YouTube and Twitch algorithms can make or break a channel's audience size, Marco's voiceover work in such games as Metal Slug and Genshin Impact, and how a creative approach to sound, including silence, can have a dramatic impact on listeners. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com, where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available, along with other interesting bits of audio-related news. And if you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help, and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:00) - Navigating a Career in Content CreationMy conversation with Marco picks up with his frank advice to people looking to follow his winding career path. “I remember when people would be like, how do you get into voiceover? And I'd always be like ‘Don't, don't!' How do you get into opera? ‘Don't!'” We discuss how much of a role luck and the YouTube algorithm played in his success, and he does offer some tips to anyone looking to start their own channel. The topic turns to AI in sound, its growing prevalence in social media, and whether it can replace human video game compositions. “There was an instance where I was listening to some YouTube music on a playlist,” he recalls. “And I was like man, this, like this guy goes off. And then I looked, and it was actually AI, and I was like, oh. And so then the question became do I still listen to this or do I not care, or do I, like, turn it off? And I eventually decided to turn it off.”(0:15:25) - Exploring Video Game Music CommunityMarco tells us more about the community he's built online with MarcoMeatball and his hopes for his fellow gamers and listeners. “The goal is to have it be a hub of video game music where,” he says, “if someone maybe doesn't know something or likes something or doesn't like something, they can come and hear a person who is just like them with a little bit of extra experience, or equal experience, or the person could actually have more experience than me and also offer their insight.” We also discuss how the channel led to a newfound appreciation for video game soundtracks as art, even compared to his childhood love of games. “I've learned about so many more pieces of music,” he adds, “like I had a deep, fundamental love for music and games, but I didn't...

My love of the NES games comes from their snare drum tight controls and tough-but-fair challenge. the SNES entry improves on a lot of the aspects of Contra & Super C: better weapons, level variety, obviously the graphics. This week on Kliq This, Big Kev finally gets to check something off his bucket list—an overdue Roman holiday that was years in the making. But this isn't your typical “celebrity goes to Europe” story. From chaotic baggage claim drama to a near-lost suitcase that almost derailed the entire vacation, Kevin and Sean unpack the highs, lows, and hilarity of international travel when you're 6'10" and fresh off bronchitis. What starts as a long-awaited romantic getaway turns into a globe-trotting saga that includes castle hikes with punishing inclines, a chance run-in with European mariachi music, and, oh yeah—Kevin just happened to be in Rome when the city got a new pope. If you're here for travel stories with Nash's signature blend of sarcasm and storytelling, this one's a can't-miss. But the show doesn't stay in Europe for long. Sean checks in with tales from a wrestling convention stateside, featuring surprise encounters with old faces and a conversation about why the indie scene might be struggling. Meanwhile, Kevin reflects on how Sabu deserves to be remembered, and how the toll of the wrestling business leaves its mark on everyone who walks through those ropes. Also in this episode: airline gripes, smoked salmon breakfasts, Delta One pods that still can't contain Nash's legs, and how WWE's lighting decisions during RAW are raising some eyebrows. And yes, Kevin finally addresses the fans who thought he took a call from Triple H mid-show last week. Spoiler alert: he didn't—but the reaction has him shaking his damn head. If you've ever wondered what it's like to explore ancient ruins, work through modern travel headaches, and still weigh in on the state of wrestling with the sharpest wit in the game—Kliq This #150 is your first-class ticket. We finish our second round of the Neo Geo 4 Slot miniseries with the ultimate retrospective on the MVS Metal Slug series which include Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, and Metal Slug 5. Will Jarrod be able to keep it together with the conclusion of this Neo Geo miniseries? What were our thoughts on the first season of X-Men 97 (contains high-level discussion which may enter spoiler territory)? Why did Pastblaster mutilate a never before opened Metal Slug 4 kit? Why are the Mars People so… jiggly? We also talk about our arcade, Flippin' Great Pinball, which was recently hit by an EF-2 tornado. While we received major damage, many of our business neighbors received much worse including complete destruction of their buildings.
