“When I photograph, what I'm really doing is seeking answers to things.” -- Wynn Bullock “If you want to be a better photographer, stand in front of more interesting stuff.” -- Jim Richardson In this episode, Antonio and Ward reflect on photography's unique role in preserving memories and stories. They discuss the importance of visual media literacy, highlighting how critical it is to go beyond just taking photos—to truly “read” images and understand the narratives they capture. Antonio shares his interest in teaching these skills, noting an upcoming workshop designed to deepen understanding in this area. They also touch on how photography serves as a bridge to the past, preserving moments that can evoke powerful emotions or insights upon rediscovery. Through examples and personal reflections, Antonio and Ward examine how images can be more than visual records—they're a way to keep memories alive, capture personal history, and connect us to our own stories and those of others. Welcome back!
Byrd, Tom and Lux are back to take a look at the 1982 semi-obscurity The House Where Evil Dwells. This haunted house shocker is a co-production made with assistance from the legendary Toei studios. It was directed by Kevin Connor (The Land that Time Forgot) and stars Edward Albert, Susan George, and the incomparable Doug McClure. Based on an unpublished novel of the same name, it tells the story of an American family that moves to Japan and the vengeful ghosts that inhabit their house (and bodies). There's killer crabs, zen monks, Sentai on the TV, and more in this oddity that blends American and Japanese ghost movie tropes. Relax and enjoy the conversation!
Hey, Cryptic Cuties, let's take a trip together to some abandoned places of the world. Tales of wealthy towns that prospered and grew but were ultimately left or destroyed. Sometimes we don't even really know, leaving more of an air of mystery. Kelsey takes us to India, and the ruins of Hampi, including impressive structures like the Hemakuta Hill Temple and the Lotus Mahal. Sounds as good as it looks, honestly. On the other side of the world, we head with Alanna back to Pirate territory, and the Jamaican town known as Port Royal. This city had quite a mecca of gambling, rum, women, privateers and a pirate named Jack (and a Captain named Morgan!) Until it met it's dreadful end. And it's other end as they sang, "never shall we die", we hope. Byrd, Matt, Lux and Jared discuss four British sci-fi adventure films featuring b-movie actor Doug McClure fighting all sorts of giant rubber beasts! We discuss three Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptations from Amicus Productions- This includes the lost world dinosaur escapades The Land that Time Forgot (1974), its sequel The People That Time Forgot At the Earth's Core (1977), and the hollow earth adventure At The Earth's Core (1976). We follow that up with the non-Amicus, non-Burroughs underwater actioner Warlords of Atlantis (1979). All four films (from director Kevin Conner) are nostalgic cult classics to this day. We talk Amicus history, talk derpy dinos, Caroline Munro, a hammy Peter Cushing, hypnotic bird-lizards, and more!
In this episode, we dive into the forgotten trends of the 80s that once dominated pop culture but have since faded from memory. There's a small stretch of Oakland's shoreline unlike any place else. Nestled between the restaurants of Jack London Square and the modern apartment blocks of Brooklyn Basin sits 5th Avenue Marina. This collection of rusty warehouses, eclectic studios, and surreal art installations recalls a bygone era, when crafty Bohemians dwelled amongst decaying shipyards. Schultz, a man who bought a chunk of this area in 1979, calls it “the neighborhood time forgot.” Although developers have attempted numerous times to dislodge the scrappy community at 5th Avenue Marina, these efforts have been stubbornly blocked, most notably in 2017 when residents formed a nonprofit called SHADE (Shadetree Historical Artisan Development Engine) and purchased the property formerly owned by Schultz. This episode traces the long history of the 5th Avenue Marina, from its days as a World War I shipbuilding facility up through its transformation into an unusual compound sometimes referred to as “Oakland's Riviera.” Our tour guide for this voyage is the legendary Schultz, who is still a feisty storyteller at 88 years old and, like Rihanna or Cher, prefers to go by a mononym. Sometimes two words can make a jaded horror reader sit up straight. Ghost is one, Dinosaur is another. Ghost. Dinosaur. Have you ever heard a more beautiful combination, a sweeter symphony of syllables. If “Ghost Dinosaur” doesn't make you go squeeee and shake your fists in excitement, I don't know how to help you. Anyway, that's the focus of Luke Dumas delightful new novel, The Paleontologist. It's a story about a haunted man, a creepy museum, institutional intrigue, murder and GHOST GODDAMN DINOSAURS!! We talk about all of that and lots more, including humour in horror, how far a book can stretch a reader's empathy, and why privilege is such a complex issue to tackle. But yeah. Also Ghost Dinosaurs. Enjoy! The People that Time Forgot (1977) answers the question: what if Star Wars had dinosaurs? and was also terrible? This is the sequel to 1974's The Land that Time Forgot. The original had some thoughtful philosophical musings on human nature; this one has a lot of cleavage. Get in touch with us! Peter Crane's book Ginkgo: The Tree that Time Forgot is a fascinating biography of the living fossil– a tree that survived the horror of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. With its resilience comes great lessons of enduring hope for peace. (I met Peter when he spoke at a Woody Plant Conference held at the Scott Arboretum in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, where magnificent ginkgo espaliers and trees command the lawn.) The episode ends with the analogy of the surviving ginkgo with inner cambium, which is like the inner light that guides us -- far more significant than our heritage, country, or family history.I share a poem by Sufi poet Hafiz titled No More Leaving that explains the potential of our inner light. We are all one in our world, and deeply rooted in all of us is an internal code of honesty, trust, and kindness, not judging others or ourselves. Episode Notes Today, we're going to take a look at a Contactee named Eugene Drake. Never heard of him? Neither had I. What's his claim to fame? Um.... He might have been the source for the original Contactee-style account, years before George Adamski or Truman Bethurum did their thing. It's a strange story. Much thanks to The Saucers that Time Forgot for their work on this story, as well as Håkan Blomqvist for his write up as well. They were very valuable resources! Like the show and want more? Curtis L. Collins is the author behind Blue Blurry Lines, the website focused on the UFO mystery, as well as its legends and hoaxes. After a career in retail management Curt began writing about UFOs, with a special interest in re-investigating the paradoxical 1980 Texas Cash-Landrum case. In 2015 Curt was on the investigative team, the Roswell Slides Research Group, that exposed the BeWitness alien photo fiasco. More recently, he launched The Saucers That Time Forgot with Claude Falkstrom, focused on unearthing “tales that UFO history has overlooked, or would rather forget.” Curt lives in the southern United States, near Jackson, Mississippi.
Our sources for Norse mythology are pretty male-centric. But even so, when we tally up the names of all the gods we have vs. all the goddesses, it turns out we actually have a lot more goddess names than gods. Goddesses certainly played an important role in the lived religion of ancient Scandinavians, so this episode is a tribute to a few of the goddesses forgotten by time. Nasa's Landsat satellite revealed what human eyes haven never witnessed - an untouched forest. The ancient trees were 2,000 years old, baffling the team of scientists evaluating their core samples. These trees sprouted long before many of mankind's biggest historical events, a testament to their lasting strength. Where was this elusive forest? Historical biographer Walter Stahr has given us definitive biographies of William H. Seward and Edwin Stanton, two of the ablest and most influential members of President Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. Earlier this year, Stahr followed those books with the definitive biography of Salmon P. Chase, Treasury secretary under Lincoln and one of the country's most important antislavery lawyers, one of the few who defended fugitive slaves against state and federal prosecutors. After his stint as a lawyer, Chase was elected to represent Ohio in the US Senate, where he was instrumental in helping to settle the slavery question in the United States. Chase also served as governor of Ohio and then as Treasury secretary, where he standardized the dozens of currencies then being issued by local banks and gave us a national currency and a system of national banks. Spend an hour learning about this man, who contributed greatly to the country but whom almost no one today remembers. Recorded on April 15, 2022, at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
