Each morning, at the end of a midnight shift, around sunrise we would tape our daily forecast. At the end of that forecast we added an agricultural supplement for farming operations. Well, you tend to get squirrely after being up all night and one morning the 3 of us decided to give that morning forecast a little extra pizazz. As one guy read the forecast into the microphone to tape it, the other 2 stood in the background and made farmyard animal noises, chicken, cows, even little piggies. It was a masterpiece!! The taped forecast remained on the weather radio for about a 4 hour period. Don't know how many of our listeners actually heard the broadcast but there must have been some smiles and raised eyebrows over the incident. We do not know to this day whether or not our boss was aware of what we did, which we have always referred to as the Old MacDonald incident… and now you know the rest of the story… OUTBRK: Storm Chasing Simulator 10% OFF for LIFE when you subscribe to STORM-net and HurricaneVision at https://data.mesoscaleforecast.com/account/membership and use the code STORMFRONT at check-out Shop Storm Front Freaks and Outbreak/StormCat5 gear exclusively at thewxstore.com Subscribe to us on YouTube.com/stormfrontfreaks for news when we go live with Storm Front Freaks Outbreak coverage of storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards with Meteorologist StormCat5 (Brady Harris) #weatherfools: Phil - Not Serving the Canadian Bacon Phil - Blue Pill Storm Phil - Give it a Coat that Works! So we want to align future AGIs. Ultimately we'd like to align them to human values, but in the shorter term we might start with other targets, like e.g. corrigibility. That problem description all makes sense on a hand-wavy intuitive level, but once we get concrete and dig into technical details… wait, what exactly is the goal again? When we say we want to “align AGI”, what does that mean? And what about these “human values” - it's easy to list things which are importantly not human values (like stated preferences, revealed preferences, etc), but what are we talking about? And don't even get me started on corrigibility!Turns out, it's surprisingly tricky to explain what exactly “the alignment problem” refers to. And there's good reasons for that! In this post, I'll give my current best explanation of what the alignment problem is (including a few variants and the [...] ---Outline:(01:27) The Difficulty of Specifying Problems(01:50) Toy Problem 1: Old MacDonald's New Hen(04:08) Toy Problem 2: Sorting Bleggs and Rubes(06:55) Generalization to Alignment(08:54) But What If The Patterns Don't Hold?(13:06) Alignment of What?(14:01) Alignment of a Goal or Purpose(19:47) Alignment of Basic Agents(23:51) Alignment of General Intelligence(27:40) How Does All That Relate To Todays AI?(31:03) Alignment to What?(32:01) What are a Humans Values?(36:14) Other targets(36:43) Paul!Corrigibility(39:11) Eliezer!Corrigibility(40:52) Subproblem!Corrigibility(42:55) Exercise: Do What I Mean (DWIM)(43:26) Putting It All Together, and TakeawaysThe original text contained 10 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: January 16th, 2025 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/dHNKtQ3vTBxTfTPxu/what-is-the-alignment-problem --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:

Shelley Delahoussaye, Supervisor of the Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center, joins Discover Lafayette to share her passion and love of animals and how the animal shelter works to save as any animals as possible while searching for loving and safe environments for them. A graduate of UL - Lafayette, Shelley earned a bachelor's degree in Animal Science. After working in private vet clinics, she was hired in 2017 by the Lafayette Animal Shelter as an Adoption, Foster, and Rescue Coordinator. One year later, she was promoted to Shelter Supervisor. She has always had a passion for animals. Prior to Shelley's leadership, the save rate for dogs was 47% and cats a low 9%. In 2016 when former Mayor-President Joel Robideaux ran for office, he campaigned on the idea of NO-Kill 2020, an initiative to which he dedicated focus and support to make it happen. Through changes made under Shelley's supervision, the shelter achieved a 90.3% save rate by 2020, and has maintained that rate ever since. Even with this success, there is still a continuing glut of stray animals in our community and the work of Lafayette Animal Shelter is critical. Pictured above is the beautiful Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Facility. Designed by Architects Beasley Moliere, the front entrance is separated into two wings: the surrender side and the adoption side. While Shelley originally questioned this decision, she quickly realized how important it is to keep the interactions separate. "The Surrender side is sad, with frantic owners looking for their pets. The Adoption side is happy, with people looking for a pet to love and care for." Prior to COVID, other states around the country would take many of our stray animals as there was a shortage of pets. Nationally, there is a trend of more responsible pet ownership and laws enforcing spay/neuter, as well as restrictions on breeders as to how many animals can be bred and how often, thus reducing the overpopulation. But now post-COVID, the shelters around the U. S. are also full and can't take our strays. "It's important to get to the root of the stray population, which is access to low-cost spay and neuter. Wild Cat SpayNation for dogs and cats is the only nonprofit low-cost spay/neuter provider that services all of Acadiana. They can only do so much. Many people want to do better by their pets but can't afford it. Please donate to them!" Lafayette Animal Shelter takes in approximately 5000 animals each year. And they get in not only dogs and cats, but potbellied pigs, goats, horses, cattle, bunnies and chickens. Shelley joked that recently her team nicknamed the facility "Old MacDonald's Farm" because of the variety of barnyard animals they took in. Luckily that week they found homes for 10 chickens, 3 potbellied pigs, 3 goats, and a horse! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34TI_obzQj8 Shelley Delahoussaye on how to prepare adequately for your pet's safety as a storm or hurricane approaches. Adopted animals are neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped before you take them home. "It's a great deal," Shelley says, and "The animals receive about $600 worth of vet treatment before they go to their new home." Adoption fees are $35 for dogs and $25 for cats. Seniors and military vets can adopt at no charge. Any pets who have been at the Animal Shelter over 30 days can be adopted for free and when the shelter gets full, adoption fees are waived. "We want them in good homes without financial barriers." Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell- all adoption fees are WAIVED until Oct, 2024. The ratio of cats and dogs is approximately 50% each. About 800 of the 5000 animals are owner-surrendered each year. For some, the owner tried to rehome them with no success, and some owners find themselves in a situation where they have to get rid of the pet immediately and turn to the Shelter. Shelley encourages owners who may be struggling with their pet's behavior to take advan...

We get duped again as Viva Pod Vegas seemingly promises two Elvises (Elvii?) with Double Trouble, but we only get one! We talk about how this movie tries to take on the British Invasion with a movie set entirely in Europe, but, you know… Colonel Tom… We talk about Elvis Presley in a Julie Christie role, a nice change of pace for Elvis movies (in terms of filmmaking), and the story behind Elvis's co-star's only film role. We (somewhat) explore the year at the box office, discuss Elvis's breaking point when recording the music for this movie, and wonder why Elvis tells no one about getting punched in the face. We admire the slapstick, break down the wildest version of Old Macdonald we've ever heard, and love one of the wildest turns in an Elvis movie so far. Elvis jumps through a window! We look ahead to Clambake.

Enjoy this replay from episode 62.Joint attention is closely linked to receptive and expressive language skills, highlighting the power of communication. To build connection before communication, use shared activities like playing with toys, singing songs, and reading books. Even if students aren't fully engaged initially, tracking their baseline data and progressing with goals can lead to impressive transformations and excitement.Toys: Playing with toys in therapy is all about creating interaction in a semi-structured environment. Remember to use simple language, allow for natural curiosity and play, and not bombard with questions. Toys I personally love to use include: cars and car tracks, mini objects, and farm sets.Literacy: Build excitement around the book, use books with repetition, and if your kids like it try an animated voice, which can be really fun. A few books I love to keep in my therapy bag that are a great success for joint attention are: Pete the Cat and his White Shoes, Brown Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.Music: Students love songs because they are familiar and create engagement. I also love to use visuals, which can be just laminated pictures or little toys that match the activity of the song. It can also be engaging to sing songs that have motions for the words. My favorite songs to use are Old Macdonald, Wheels on the Bus, Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.It can be difficult to keep data and set goals around these abstract ideas, be sure to check out my goal bank on ABA speech. I hope you love these ideas, and I can't wait for you to try them out in your next therapy session!#autism #speectherapyWhat's Inside:How to increase learner engagement? What is joint attention? How to embed joint attention across a student's day.Where to start with joint attention.Integrating shared activities into therapy. Why should you focus on the connection before communication?Mentioned In This Episode:IEP Goals for Students with Autism - ABA SpeechGet our Ethics Course about SLP/BCBA Collaboration in the ABA SPEECH ConnectionRose Griffin (@abaspeechbyrose) on Instagram

We're a bit weary of garage rock tropes, so it's time to head to the country. First this week is "The Woods" by The Nickel Bag. This 66er advocates leaving the city, but should you follow this pied piper? I might - the swirling organ has me hyp - mo - tized!! That same year, the "Old Macdonald" nursery rhyme got rewritten by some LA weirdos - The Seeds called it "Mr. Farmer." Lots of seedy sibilance, and when has Sky Saxon ever ssssteered you wrong? Let's cross the pond to celebrate the changing seasons with "Falling Leaves"by Scotland's Studio Six. A mod pagan ritual! The final idyll comes courtesy of England's The Factory and their 68 psych out, "Path Through The Forest." These guys take us way out - maybe too far!! Won't you come along??? [with apologies the Carbondale, IL City Council]
This week we are going to Maleny and hiking around two very unique areas in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. We visit a large protected rainforest area which is full of wildlife (including snakes) and some endangered species as well as the cute little pademelons you can easily see jumping around the rainforest undergrowth. Oh pademelons are little wallabies by the way. Next we go walking around a 110 acre tropical paradise garden and bird sanctuary. This area used to be a cattle farm and is now completely transformed to be one of, if not the most beautiful places on the Sunshine Coast. This is the where you can see the best views of the iconic Glass House Mountains (which are actually 13 unusually shaped ancient volcanic vents that dominate the landscape) There are tropical gardens, ponds and lakes, waterfalls, oriental gardens, rotundas dotted everywhere, plus so much more. It is truly beautiful. The bird sanctuary was started to house rescue birds and there are four walk-through aviaries where you can have an interactive experience with the birds from all over the world. There is even one parrot that sings opera and Old Macdonald had a farm. Stay listening to the end though, where I literally scream and escape over the fence from the miniature animals in the farm enclosure and then while I have a chat - up close and personal with a red-tailed black cockatoo. Advanced warning though– he is very vocal. We tell you about Maleny, the pretty little town that you can visit just a few kilometres away from these stunning places and the best accommodation and venues to eat while you are visiting. This episode is so full of nature, beauty and wildlife with the background chorus from the rainforest, birds and insects. To celebrate two decades since its milestone release, Justin and Gurdip look back at how producer David Bendeth overcame obstacles like deteriorating master tapes, poor documentation and missing elements to deliver a vibrant compilation that while massively successful, also proved controversial at the time to the most hardcore Elvis enthusiasts for its dynamic, modern mixes and mastering, technical issues and historical inaccuracies. Then, from the highest of highs of Elvis's career, we sink to the lowest of lows as Justin continues "Justin Explains Bad Elvis Movie Songs Month" by exploring the genuinely incredible and surprising history behind an 18th century comedic opera song and subsequent folk tune that eventually became known as "Old MacDonald," a version of which Elvis would record for the film "Double Trouble." But as maligned as "Old MacDonald" is, despite how frequently it's cited as the worst song Elvis Presley ever recorded, nothing can prepare you for Gurdip hilariously running the premise of the month straight to its natural climax: "What Every Woman Lives For" from Frankie and Johnny, not only the actual worst song Elvis recorded, but the worst song ever written by hitmakers Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. We're committed to covering all the songs, and we had to do it someday. It just felt appropriate to do it tongue firmly planted in cheek, on the episode celebrating one of the most successful releases of Elvis's most brilliant, endearing and classic recordings. The good news is: things can only go up from here now. Song of the Week can never go lower. And we've had so much fun doing it. Old MacDonald had a farm—and on that farm he had rich terrain for an episode of Getting Curious. Join Professor Gabe Rosenberg and Jonathan as they explore what agricultural history has to do with our modern understandings of sex, gender, and sexuality. They cover the concept of “animal husbandry,” 4-H clubs, the story of a pig looking for love, and so much more. Gabriel N. Rosenberg is Associate Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies and History at Duke University, where he studies how gender, race, and sexuality have shaped the history of the modern food system. His first book, The 4-H Harvest: Sexuality and the State in Rural America, was a gendered history of the iconic rural youth organization, and he is currently writing a book about the interconnections between livestock breeding and the emergence of the human eugenics movement. He writes frequently for The New Republic and has held research fellowships at the National Humanities Center, Yale University, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, and the American Philosophical Society.
