Terminus Episode 23 - Ildskaer, Cimetiere, Elcrost, Toadeater

TERMINUS: extreme metal podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2020 191:31

On this week's full-throttle, three-hour marathon episode of Terminus, we come face to face with some of the black metal questions that have haunted us from the beginning of the show. The Black Metal Guy begins with Denmark's Ildskaer and Quebec's Cimetiere, both of whom draw on the beloved "Franco-Finnish" guitar style. Is this smoothly-flowing, epic riff-form too dominant for its own good? And if so, what's the way out? Ildskaer answers this quandary by adapting the F.F. riff to a uniquely Danish sensibility. Cimetiere does the same, but for French Canada. We love both these records, and in the course of discussion we range from the rise of the nowadays Danish scene to some unexpected links between black metal and '77 punk. On Part II, The Death Metal Guy introduces Elcrost, a young and very promising "Gothic extreme metal" band from Vietnam. They work uphill against a limited recording setup to write intricate, thoughtfully composed songs. And when the formula works, it really works! At last, we turn to Germany's Toadeater, and this brings us to the big one -- the post-black question! -- in what may be our most contentious segment yet. TDMG and TBMG debate whether this record is black metal or post-black, whether it's good or terrible, and where music like this falls in the direction of the genre as a whole. Lurking behind it all is the towering specter of Mgla. How has this single band reshaped the field of black metal, and how should up-and-coming bands respond? Where does originality come from, and how? You don't wanna miss this one!! 00:00 - Introductory bullshitting 11:48 - Ildskaer - Den Raedsomste Nat (Wolfspell Records) 56:36 - Cimetiere - Extinction (CD on Feu Follet Productions and Les Creations Underground; tape on Epitaphe Prod.) 01:27:52 - Interlude - Malveillance - "Extensive Slaughter," fr. Just Fuck Off (Suffering Jesus Productions et al., 2006). Available from one of the original labels, New Scream Industries, if the BigCartel still works. If not, it's at Dark Horizon on clearance. 01:30:16 - Elcrost - Foregone Fables (Independent) 02:03:00 - Toadeater - Bit to ewigen daogen (Revolvermann Records/Kellerassell Records) 03:01:12 - Outro - Gloosh, "Groza," fr. Timewheel (Independent, 2019). Tape via slowsnow records. This summer's EP, The River, is also well worth checking out. This week on Terminus, we continue reaping this fall's bumper crop of pagan black metal, punctuated by some extremely catchy brutal death. And it's one of those rare shows where we both really like every record! We start by singing the praises of the new Macabre Omen, which easily transcends its unusual format -- one vast but tightly-woven epic, plus a bunch of tracks from raw 90s demos and splits you almost certainly haven't heard. You'll hear missing links to the early Hellenic scene, strange relics of Nordic influence, and forays into psychedelic pastures -- all still as bright as they day they were forged. After this sprawling, Bathorian segment, The Death Metal Guy leads us through Nihil Obstat's catchy, streamlined evolution of early-00s Colombian brutal death. The songwriting here is killer, and it's more like Greek black metal than you might think.... On Part II, it's all Slavonic spellcraft and Swedish steel. We start with a fan submission of sorts -- the debut of Ikotka (Икотка), from the wilds of the Ural Mountains in northeastern Russia. Their actually-ritual summoning songs draw freely from Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish sounds, but don't really sound like any of them. Finally, we close with the return of Svederna, who don the grim hauberk of full-spectrum 90s black metal, striving for the title of Most Swedish Band of All Time. This is the chance The Black Metal Guy has been waiting for to sperg out about forgotten late-90s Svensk BM, and especially one of his all-time favorite bands.... 00:00 - Introductory bullshitting / social media plug / rundown of bands and labels 12:57 - Macabre Omen - Anamneses (Van Records) 55:56 - Nihil Obstat - Antimatter (Rotten Cemetery Records) 01:26:26 - Ikotka - Zagovor (SoundAge Production) 02:08:53 - Svederna - Hard (Carnal Records) 02:57:35 - Outro - Sorhin - "Skogsgriftens rike," fr. I det glimrande mörkrets djup, reissued most recently by Helter Skelter Productions (a top-shelf underground sublabel of Regain). Terminus on Youtube Terminus on Patreon Terminus on Subscribestar

In this conversation we learn the real raw process of forgiveness. Keesha details some of the contents of a letter the other woman wrote to her. Much to the dismay of many, Keesha says the letter was essential to the healing process. But before the healing began, many other characteristics rightfully reared their ugly head publicly - anger, frustration, hate, and animosity - just to name a few. She was not ashamed to let the world know how she felt! The angst toward the woman ran so deep that Keesha even says that she felt responsible for some of the medical issues the woman faced during her pregnancy. But after listening, learning, and laughing from this conversation, we know it's such a beautiful & freeing thing when we can forgive some of the most hurtful acts that leave the deepest emotional scars. It's beautiful because the act of forgiveness not only saves the offended from that sweet bitterness but it also heals. Through the continuation of the conversation in Part II: I'm friends with the other woman, we learn the real raw process of forgiveness.
