Cyclops is Waiting for Me - An X-Men: The Animated Series Weekly Recap
No teen drama here as the X-Men and Acolytes search the Sphinx as they try to stop Apocalypse from returning. This season finale(ish) is filled with big moments and has the most comic book feel of the entire season. And, it is impossible to discuss without comparing it to the live action X-Men: Apocalypse film. Cyclops is Waiting for Me is our weekly podcast series where we are going back and watching EVERY-SINGLE-X-MEN-ANIMATED-EPISODE we can find. This podcast started with the original 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series building up to the release of X-Men ‘97. Along the way, we've also launched our companion show The Xavier Files with interviews of members of the X-Men community including voice actors from the series! Since season 2 of X-Men ‘97 is now a ways off, we are returning for the second half of our first watch through of X-Men: Evolution. On this week's show we discuss a video where Caleb Denison of Digital Trends, says the AppleTV is the best at streaming your video and we have a review of the Tablo TV Over the Air DVR. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Disney Kicks Off Password-Sharing Crackdown in Canada Samsung SmartThings And Philips Hue Expand Synergies FAST Is Making Streaming TV Look More Like Traditional TV Netflix Reportedly Set to Raise Prices After Actors Strike Ends Other: Dolby Atmos FlexConnect How You Stream Matters We received a couple of emails (one from Stan and one from John) this week pointing us to an article and video stating that how you stream your content affects what you see. The article is from Dark Horizons and the video is on Youtube (Apple TV Best for Netflix? Right Time To Buy a TV? | You Asked: Ep. 7). The video host, Caleb Denison of Digital Trends, says the AppleTV is the best, although he prefers using Google TV. So how did he come to this conclusion? Some TVs or set top boxes limit color bit depth to 4:2:0, which means more color banding just because you are watching on that particular platform. Many platforms may have that setting as the default so check to make sure you have an option to change it. Without going into a ton of detail, 4:4:4 is 100% of the chroma information, 4:2:2 is 50% and 4:2:0 is 25%. If you have Dolby Vision enabled on an AppleTV you will not have an option to select a Chroma setting. It will be 4:2:2 by default. Some platforms do not allow buffering. As a result you will never achieve the full 4K you are paying for. Caleb does not say which platforms do this. But if you have 4K with a slower data rate it won't be difficult to determine if your system is buffering or not. Another issue is with frame rate. Some will not give you 24 fps but will instead convert it to 30 fps. So why the AppleTV? According to the host, “It's the one with the least amount of questions and just enough controls available. It also comes with the fewest number of headaches, and for that I'm willing to pay a little extra. It's not perfect, but it is the least flawed and sadly I think that's where we're at right now with streaming.” Tablo TV Over the Air DVR Over the years we have had a chance to review a lot of personal DVRs. Most of which have come and gone. Some had stand alone hardware and others required a PC. Some had built-in tuners and others required an external tuner. Today we take a quick look at a DVR that is a stand alone box no bigger than an AppleTV or Roku streaming box with two built in ATSC 2.0 tuners. That device is the Tablo 4th generation that goes for about $110. Features: Watch, pause and record live broadcast TV from your antenna. Record 50+ hours and never miss a moment with 128GB of onboard recording storage. Can expand up to 1000+ hours with an external hard drive Tablo lets you watch TV anywhere in your home on any smart device. Record and watch live TV, subscription-free (Internet service is required). Quick and easy setup. Setup Plug in power, Ethernet, and an antenna and you are ready to scan for channels. I initially had issues with the Tablo giving me location errors and stopping the install process there. I contacted their Customer Support and they acknowledged the error and informed me of a server issue they were experiencing. Once those were resolved the process resumed without a hitch. The only complaint I had was that it took too long to download the channel guide. But I was being impatient. Performance Once you complete the install and setup you can start watching TV and recording programs. I won't go into the details on how to do this because it's very intuitive and you've all done this before. In addition to the channels you receive over the air, Tablo has some FAST channels that include news, sports, old TV shows, and more. You watch on your Tablet or phone and on Set Top boxes. Currently Roku, fireTV, android TV, GoogleTV, iOS and Android are supported. AppleTV, Samsung TVs, WebOS, and Vizio TVs are coming soon. Two devices can watch/record live TV simultaneously and up to six can watched recorded or streamed content simultaneously. Picture quality is good, but we are talking 1080i or 720p OTA, so don't expect the same as 4K HDR content you get from AppleTV or Netflix. The user interface is very intuitive and easy to navigate. Setting up recordings is simple. Recorded programs are grouped together based on series. Guide information is available and I haven't been prompted to pay for it which is a big plus over other DVRs. There is no way to watch your content when you are away from home so consider that when making your buying decision. Also, a pleasant surprise is that you can record FAST channels and skip commercials. I'm not sure other devices let you do that. In all, this is a great device if you are looking for a DVR like you used to have back in the day. You can watch anywhere in the house and, soon enough, on any device. If you want to stream your content outside your home, this product is not for you. Perhaps someday that capability will be added, but not today.

Great to talk with Chris and Maria from in This Moment. They're currently out on the Dark Horizon tour with Motionless In White, From Ashes To New and Fit For A King. This fall they hit the road with Kiss Of Death tour with Ice Nine Kills, Avatar and New Year's Day. We talked about what got them into the theatrical side of rock/metal music. Chris pointed to KISS, Marie pointed to Marilyn Manson and anything thing that strikes a visual chord. "We're bringing a lot of new bells and whistles" Maria commented on the currant stage show. There's a lot that goes into a ITM show, and Maria kept bringing up the fact that there's more fire than ever before. The new album Godmode comes out October 27th. Chris told me that making this album they took a lot more time. Plus, working with Kane Churko, instead of his father, Kevin. "Working with him brought a whole new level of intensity to the project." The Purge is the latest single, as they told me how that song's been kicking around for a while. Maria talked about created songs and her writing process. We also talked about the creative element that the band brings to the videos. "I don't have people write for me." Maria said. She's very hands-on when it comes to everything In This Moment. As far as Godmode is concerned...There's a cover on the album - "Army of Me" There's one collaboration on the record. "It's a little darker than we normally tend to be." Maria said about the overall vibe of the new music. It's more experimental. It's more progy, as well. "It definitely is" Chris added. We talked horror movies as well. I could talk horror flicks all day. Surprisingly, Maria said "Certain horror I can't watch and won't watch. It will get into my head too much." She went on to elaborate about that. As far as their stage getup is concerned, Chris told me "You're literally putting on the persona and this costume to go out and be something else for the time that you're doing it." "I love dressing up, becoming these characters and having this other side of me be invoked, for sure." Maria commented as far as her stage persona goes. This is a really fun conversation....a huge thanks to Maria and Chris! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

Colin Baker For the second successive year we are proud to be bringing a Doctor to Whooverville – and it's an old friend of our group and our convention. We are absolutely delighted to be able to announce that COLIN BAKER has agreed to return to Whooverville.Colin, the Sixth Doctor of course, needs no introduction. If you have yet to see him at a convention you are in for a treat. He is a fabulous guest and a genuinely nice guy.He was the main guest at the very first Whooverville, back in 2009 and we are really looking forward to showing him what we have done with our little convention, as well as to asking him about Big Finish, his part in the 50th Anniversary Celebrations, I'm A Celebrity… and so much more. Many thanks to Colin for agreeing to come back and see us again Guests Jenny T. Colgan Jenny published her first novel in 2000 and is one of the UK's most popular romantic novelists, winning the award for Romantic Novel of the Year in 2013 for Welcome to Rosie Hopkins' Sweetshop of Dreams. A life-long Who fan, who once won a competition to meet Peter Davison, Jenny's first Doctor Who novel, Dark Horizons was published in 2012. She is also a contributor to the recently published collection of Who novellas, originally published as e-books, Time Trips. Many thanks to our friends at BBC Books for helping to arrange Jenny's appearance at Whooverville. Richard Marson Richard is the author of two acclaimed biographies of Doctor Who producers. JNT: The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan Turner, published in 2013, confounded many people's expectations by being a serious, scholarly and above all sympathetic account of the life of the last producer of classic Doctor Who. He has followed this up his year, with his biography of the series' first producer, Drama and Delight: The Life of Verity Lambert, which is garnering rave reviews. Both books are published by Miwk Publishing, to whom our thanks go for facilitating Richard's appearance at Whooverville. Richard was for many years a contributor to Doctor Who Magazine and was editor of Blue Peter between 1998 and 2007. He also produced the fabulous 2012 documentary, Tales of Television Centre. We very much look forward to meeting him. Jeff Cummins Since winning a Magpie art competition with a portrait of George Best in 1969, Jeff has had a successful career as a graphic designer and artist. In the 1970s he worked with the legendary Hipgnosis, designers of album covers, working with artists such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues and Peter Gabriel. His painting for the Paul and Linda McCartneyalbum ‘Wings Over America' propelled him into the international arena. of course he is well-known to Who fans as the designer of the covers of a number of Target books. More information on Jeff and his work can be found at Many thanks to Jeff for contacting us, we look forward to meeting him. Karen Louise Hollis Karen is an old friend and a member of our group, who is known for her two books relating her convention experiences Un-Conventional and The Other Side of The Table. She is the author of the forthcoming Anthony Ainley biography, The Man Behind The Master, to be published by Fantom Films. Michael Pickwoad Michael is the current Production Manager on Doctor Who, the man ultimately responsible for all art and design matters on the series. The son of War Machines actor William Mervyn, he has never done a convention before. Many thanks to our friend Tristan Peatfield for making the introductions. Dan Starkey Dan has become the go-to-guy for Sontarans both for televised Doctor Who and for Big Finish audios, since appearing in the 10th Doctor Story The Sontaran Strategem/The Poison Sky. He is probably best known as Commander Strax, a role which he first played in the Eleventh Doctor story A Good Man Goes To War and which he has reprised on several occasions since as part of the Paternoster Gang. After 3 seasons in prosthetics as Randal Moon in Wizards vs. Aliens, Dan finally got his face on-screen as Ian the elf in the Doctor Who Christmas Special Last Christmas, before covering himself in glory as part of the winning team in the Christmas 2014 series of University Challenge. Dan is a long-standing Doctor Who fan, which will make it particularly pleasing to welcome him to Whooverville. Terrance Dicks Terrance Dicks is a very old friend of our group, having twice previously visited us for Friday evening meetings, as well as for one of the 625 Lines events at QUAD that we co-organised. Terrance needs no introduction, he is simply the most important writer ever to contribute to Doctor Who and the biggest influence on the show of the last 40 years. Terrance is a great convention guest, a font of fascinating stories and memories, and a genuinely nice, approachable person. If you haven't met him yet, you are in for a treat. David Benson David Benson is perhaps best know to us as the voice of Panda in the Big Finish Iris Wildthyme audio range, for playing Orson Welles in ‘Invaders from Mars', also for Big Finish and (among others) Aleister Crowley in ‘The Scarifyers'. He is also known for his hit one-man show ‘Think No Evil Of Us', based on the life of Kenneth Williams as well as for his similar show based on Frankie Howerd and for playing Noel Cowerd in the BBC comedy show ‘Goodnight Sweetheart'. David made his television Doctor Who debut this year as the Master of Ceremonies of the Archery Contest in ‘Robot of Sherwood'. Matthew Waterhouse The son of a solicitor, Matthew was a great fan of Doctor Who in his younger days and went on to play Adric alongside the 4th and 5th Doctors. Matthew has recently returned to Doctor Who as Adric for Big Finish alongside Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor. Photo Gallery
