Silicon Valley veteran and early employee at Google, Facebook, and Quip, Molly Graham, joins CJ to discuss all things related to scaling startups, growing as a leader, and progressing in your career. Molly talks about her famous “Give Away Your Legos” talk and how this came about before she and CJ discuss the concept of “work grief” and how to get through it when you have to give up something that your identity is tied to. Having had a very non-linear career path and “stumbling sideways into things”, Molly explains the J-Curve versus staircase analogy for career progression and encourages especially those in finance roles to take big risks. From handling the grief of laying someone off to learning the skill of saying no, mastering the art of destruction as an important part of building a company, and knowing how to fire people not just hire them, Molly shares profound insights from her impressive career. Logan Maley is someone who really likes what she does. She believes she found her niche. She loves being in-house in tech because she gets to do all of the things she enjoys doing and that she think she's good at; strategy, advisory work, negotiating, making an impact, being creative, working and collaborating with a variety of people who have diverse skill sets and strengths. What really makes her job--and her life--fulfilling, however, is connecting with people. Logan likes to say that she's a serious professional who doesn't take herself too seriously. The second attorney in at Procore, she's seen the company scale from a private company with sub-500 employees, US only, to a NYSE-listed global company with over 3,000 employees and growing. She helped the company prepare for its IPO in every way (twice actually, thanks pandemic). Logan loves the journey of scaling a company and continues to enjoy each new phase of maturity. She has worn many hats and supported just about every practice area possible. She is currently supporting legal and compliance for their new ventures in FinTech, broadening her experience out of B2B SaaS. Aside from being a lawyer/tech exec, Logan is a mom of two awesome little humans, a spouse to one awesome very tall gentleman, a lover and player of music, and the one always hosting the parties. Molly Graham, a seasoned tech-exec, wrote an amazing piece about scaling a tech company in which she said "if you personally want to grow as fast as your company, you have to give away your job every couple months." Logan Maley has taken this approach to heart and will talk about how a "team of generalists" in a high-growth tech company can help legal teams meet each phase of maturity and help legal leaders keep not-yet-GC-level employees on board and engaged long past IPO or other late-stages of growth.

Today's episode is with Sam Taylor, VP of Sales and Success at Loom. Previously, Sam was Dropbox's first enterprise sales rep, and also served as Quip's first sales leader. In today's conversation, we dig into the key learnings from each stop in Sam's career so far. Starting with his earliest experience at Dropbox, he walks us through his aha moment that sales is an insight driver — which includes his lessons on pricing and packaging, as well as plotting the feature roadmap as Dropbox moved up market. Next, he reflects on his time at Quip, including what sticks with him from working closely with its CEO Bret Taylor and COO Molly Graham. He also digs into his tested tactics for selling in a competitive market where you're going up against plenty of established players, like Google and Microsoft. We then turn our attention to his current role at Loom, and how he's threading all of those experiences together. He pays particular attention to his partnership with Loom's product leaders, and how they're teaming up to achieve what he jokingly calls “total Loom domination.” If you're in sales, you won't want to miss Sam's insights he's picked up over the course of multiple startup success stories. And folks that work for other functions at product-led growth companies will come away with a greater understanding and appreciation for how sales fits in. For our latest episode, Sima Sistani joins us for a conversation that brings to light the personal side and vulnerable truths of trying to run a company, be a present parent, and deal with life changes and societal expectations of how to do it all. We share different perspectives on how to try and raise kids with a strong internal sense of self and how we're each still discovering this for ourselves. During Covid in 2020, Sima put these life lessons of empathy and grace into action in how she led the team at Houseparty. We dig into her career trajectory, from international equities trading at Goldman Sachs to working in Hollywood and into co-founding a tech startup, and advice she got along the way. To wrap up, Chloe, April and Sima all discuss the choice to found companies in their 40s, the narrow stereotype that you have to be young to make that leap, and searching for the tingly feeling of when you know you've seen a glimpse of the future and when to chase it. Each week, we wrap up with a Shoutout to people who've inspired and helped us along the way. This episode, Sima highlights Martha Lane Fox, an internet entrepreneur and Board Director at Twitter, and Jess shines on Molly Graham, COO at Lambda School. Chloe gives a special shoutout to everyone serving on local school boards! Hosted by the co-founders of #ANGELS, an investment collective: Jessica Verrilli, April Underwood, Jana Messerschmidt, Chloe Sladden, Katie Stanton, and Vijaya Gadde. On this episode, Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham take a tour of NOAA's Voices Oral History Archives (VOHA) with program manager Molly Graham. VOHA seeks to document the human experience as it relates to the changing environment, climate, oceans and coasts through firsthand oral history accounts. Any individual or organization can participate in the VOHA program by contributing oral history interview projects and interviews that are related to the project scope and mission, or by using the interviews archived here in their research, scholarship, exhibits, or general use.
Our first episode is with Molly Graham, a seasoned exec and builder who particularly excels at helping startups to go not from 0 to 1, but from 1 to 2. We’ve interviewed her four times on First Round Review — which might be a record — because the advice she has to share and the experiences she can draw from are unbelievably helpful to founders and startup leaders. She helped build and scale Facebook, Quip, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in their early days, and is now the COO of Lambda School. While on The Review she’s shared advice on everything from managing your emotions and struggling with scaling, to codifying your culture and setting up your first comp system, today’s conversation is focused on a different topic — management. This is a topic Molly has strong opinions on—she’s seen time and time again across her career how so many startup mistakes come down to general management issues. We cover everything from the traps that are easy to fall into, to why you should be spending more time with your highest—not your lowest—performers, to the managers she’s learned the most from, so there’s tons of insightful advice and practical tactics for both first-time managers and seasoned leaders alike. You can read more about Molly’s approach to scaling startups on First Round Review. We particularly recommend following her advice to ‘give away your Legos’ https://firstround.com/review/give-away-your-legos-and-other-commandments-for-scaling-startups/ And here’s the article on compensation that Molly mentioned in the interview: https://firstround.com/review/A-Counterintuitive-System-for-Startup-Compensation/ You can email us questions directly at review@firstround.com or follow us on Twitter @firstround and @brettberson

Coastal Conversations | WERU 89.9 FM Blue Hill, Maine Local News and Public Affairs Archives
Producer/Host: Natalie Springuel Sardine canneries created jobs for generations of Mainers living near the coast for more than one hundred years, and cultivated values centered on hard, honest work and community. Sardines gave many Mainers an income during the Great Depression, presented opportunities for women to enter the workforce, and ingrained life-long bonds and stories in Maine communities that are still visible today. On this edition of Coastal Conversations, we feature nine interviews centered around Maine's historic sardine industry. These interviews span the entire process of creating a can of sardines, from late night weir-tending, to cutting off fish heads with scissors, to “cartoning” and shipping out truckloads of cans. The interview clips we featured today explore the history of the industry, from its humble beginnings to its eventual death, when Stinson Seafood, the last sardine cannery in Maine, closed down in 2010. In this show, we explore the lives of people deeply connected to the small silvery fish, and their impact on Maine and its communities. Special thanks first and foremost to Camden Hunt for his near-total leadership on production for this show! We also appreciate the help of Ela Keegan, Hannah Robbins, Galen Koch, and Molly Graham, for production support. The following people are featured on this show: Arlene and Pete Hartford, age 73 and 76, from Gouldsboro, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2011 Susan Knight Calder, age 84, from Whiting, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2013 Willard and Peter Colson, age 88 and 56, from Southwest Harbor, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2011 Lela Anderson, age 80, from Corea, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2011 Diana Young, age 66, from Prospect Harbor, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2011 Myrtess Harrington, age 80, from Steuben, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2013 Clell Genthner, age 75, from Damariscotta, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2011 Al West, age 62, from Steuben, interviewed by Keith Ludden in 2012 Robert Dyer, age 82, from Chebeague Island, interviewed by Joshua Wrigley in 2013 Citation for the Oral History collection We are grateful to the archives that have helped protect this important facet of Maine history. Though the interviews clips we used on our episode of Coastal Conversations have been edited for clarity and length, the original nine interviews are archived at the NOAA Voices Oral History Archives. Robert Dyer's interview is part of the Maine Coast Oral History Initiative – the other eight are all from The Last Sardine Cannery Collection, also housed in Oral History and Folklife Research, Inc. Specific Links for each interview are as follows: Arlene and Pete Hartford Susan Knight Calder Willard and Peter Colson Lela Anderson Diana Young Myrtess Harrington Clell Genthner Al West Robert Dyer About the host: Natalie Springuel has hosted Coastal Conversation's since 2015, with support from the University of Maine Sea Grant where she has served as a marine extension associate for 20 years. In 2019, Springuel received an award for Public Affairs programming from the Maine Association of Broadcasters for the Coastal Conversations show called “Portland's Working Waterfront.” Springuel is passionate about translating science, sharing stories, and offering a platform for multiple voices to weigh in on complex coastal and ocean issues. She has recently enrolled in audio production training at Maine Media Workshop to dive deeper into making great community radio. On this edition of Coastal Conversations, we feature nine interviews centered around Maine’s historic sardine industry. Robert Dyer’s interview is part of the Maine Coast Oral History Initiative – the other eight are all from The Last Sardine Cannery Collection, also housed in Oral History and Folklife Research, Inc. Specific Links for each interview are as follows: Arlene and Pete Hartford Susan Knight Calder Willard and Peter Colson Lela Anderson Diana Young Myrtess Harrington Clell Genthner Al West Robert Dyer About the host: Natalie Springuel has hosted Coastal Conversation’s since 2015, with support from the University of Maine Sea Grant where she has served as a marine extension associate for 20 years. In 2019, Springuel received an award for Public Affairs programming from the Maine Association of Broadcasters for the Coastal Conversations show called “Portland’s Working Waterfront.” Springuel is passionate about translating science, sharing stories, and offering a platform for multiple voices to weigh in on complex coastal and ocean issues. She has recently enrolled in audio production training at Maine Media Workshop to dive deeper into making great community radio.

In the very first episode of #Exceptions, we meet a company so excited about building a brand that it kind of feels like they name the whole company after how they feel. In this one, Jay explores Gusto, a SaaS platform that helps automate and improve your payroll, benefits, and HR processes. They launched in 2012 and employ over 500 people across San Francisco and Denver offices. They're valued at over $1 billion. In 2018, Gusto was named to the Fintech 50 by Forbes. Wistia is a company that markets a mission, not just a bunch of products. A few years ago, you might have described Wistia as a SaaS company that offers video hosting and analytics. But thanks to a major product launch this year, the company is in flux. They're in growth mode, but they're also in control of that growth. Like all other brands in the #Exceptions series, Wistia puts a huge emphasis on customer centricity. It's one of the biggest reasons why more than 30,000 companies worldwide use Wistia products to create, host, and measure their videos, including companies like Mailchimp, Sephora, Zendesk, Squarespace, and Casper. Keeping a swipe file has been a game-changer for DG. It helps him come up with ideas and find patterns between ideas. If you don’t have a swipe file, you should definitely consider it. DG recorded this one in his car on the last day of vacation in Hilton Head, SC a few weeks back, just for you. The book he mentioned was Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This by Edward Boches and Luke Sullivan, who was an ad agency guy for 30 or so years. In this episode, DC busts out his whiteboard to talk about three different comparisons of company growth vs. individual growth. In the first, the company grows faster than the individual. In the second, the individual grows faster than the company. In the third (and rarest) scenario, both grow rapidly—together. You’ll also hear thoughts on intermittent fasting, Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker, and Total Recall (the book) by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this one, Maggie shares a recent Tweet that got her the most impressions she’s ever had—and her first internet troll. It went something like this:“Stop wasting time talking about tools and backlogs. It doesn’t matter. Go talk to your sales team, figure out what hurdles they’re running into, and solve for them.” Listen in to hear why this struck such a nerve in the product community. Jill Rowley is not a CMO, and we didn’t drink coffee during this interview. That should tell you just how much we wanted to interview her. Jill is the Chief Growth Officer at Marketo. She’s been in sales her whole life, although she has a soft spot for marketing and loves to study the best CMOs in the world. In this one, she told a crazy story about landing a deal at Eloqua that was a decade in the making, talked about her time at Salesforce, and shared when to walk away from a potential deal. Mike Volpe is now a CEO, so what’s he doing on Coffee With a CMO? Well, Mike has a long history in marketing, and at the time of this recording, he still had a few hours left as CMO before he transitioned into the big chair. So technically, we didn’t cheat. In this one, Mike talks about how your PR focus should change as your company grows, why you should associate with big-name brands, and why you should hire people who are better than you. DC is back from sabbatical, people. This is a very important day. If you listened to the episode with ET, you know that Drift’s two co-founders put sabbaticals in place for every three years instead of the typical five. Not just one time, but every three years. Which seemed like a great idea three years ago, but then DC had to be the first one to do it or else no one would… He was gone for a month, in Vermont, then L.A. And boy, does he have some stories... The three books DC recommended, all by Daniel Coyle, were The Culture Code The Talent Code The Little Book of Talent And here’s Jeff Bezos’s rubric for hiring. ET is filling in for DC while he's wrapping up his sabbatical. We talked about the Drift Sabbatical program, why it's 3 years vs. 5, and how the company scales as the founders take more time off, how to set up systems to scale, and the power of unplugging. We also talked about the Drift Leadership Principles and how they set up new hires for success and help scale the company too. And we talked about READING! First up is Joe Chernov, Chief Marketing Officer at InsightSquared. DG found out a secret that has completely changed the way he does public speaking. It turns out, if you actually have a good framework, public speaking can become easy. Anytime you’re stuck, you can use these five points to get unstuck. They work for everything from presentations to slide decks to blog posts and even emails. Seeking Wisdom is expanding, and we're going to be adding a handful of new shows. The next one to drop is #Build, hosted by Maggie Crowley. In this episode, Maggie, DC, and DG intro the new show and let you know what you can expect from it. Maggie is a Product Manager at Drift, has her MBA from Harvard Business School -- and oh yeah -- she's a former Olympian. And now she's the newest host on Seeking Wisdom. Experience and a fancy degree can only get you so far. If you've listened to DC, you've probably caught that he doesn't exactly love hiring product managers with experience and those with their MBAs. They don't give you the right to tell people what to do; all they can do is help you get your foot in the door (he says). But that's where Maggie breaks the mold. Maggie is a Product Manager at Drift, has her MBA from Harvard Business School -- and oh yeah -- she's a former Olympian. And now she's the newest host on Seeking Wisdom. And in this first episode of #build, she explains everything she's learned from DC and the Drift team about how to build better and faster. Molly Graham tells a story about a date that happened during the "golden years" of her life.
DG is joined by Allen Gannett who's the CEO of Track Maven and author of the new book "How to Develop the Right Idea, at the Right Time." They talk about Allen's book and lessons from over 25 creative geniuses, from the Broadway team behind Dear Evan Hansen, to the founder of Reddit, from the Chief Content Officer of Netflix to Michelin star chefs. Allen shares the four laws of creative success and identifies the common patterns behind their achievement. But DG and Allen also go behind the scenes to dig into Allen's writing process, how he created the book, and the secrets (and systems) behind his massive success with LinkedIn video. Follow Allen on Twitter @Allen and say hi to @davegerhardt & @dcancel. Use the promo code SEEKINGWISDOM when you get your tickets to HYPERGROWTH 2018 and save $500 today (just $199 for your ticket). "Your only job is to continue to grow, learn and evolve as fast as you possibly can," says Molly Graham. And, she knows hypergrowth. Molly has helped scale several leading technology companies as an early employee at Facebook, COO at Quip (which was acquired by Salesforce for $750M) and most recently the VP of Operations at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. In this episode of Greymatter, Molly and Greylock Partner John Lilly share how to define company culture, what to look for in a new hire and advice for dealing with constant change. At Facebook, she created Facebook's external "hacker" brand and built programs to strengthen the Facebook culture as it grew from 500 to 1,500 employees as well as a stint leading some of Facebook's long term mobile initiatives. After Facebook, Molly joined Quip three months before it launched in 2013 and was tasked with building out the business. She sold the first customers, ran sales and marketing, and ultimately hired key team members to help Quip scale. Prior to Greylock, John was CEO of Mozilla, the organization behind Firefox, the open source Web browser used by more than 450 million people. John also co-founded Reactivity, an enterprise security infrastructure company acquired by Cisco in 2007. Both Molly and John share stories of their past experience scaling organizations at different levels of growth and lessons learned along the way. A few key takeaways are below.
