Matthew Chan returns to share how his understanding of the gospel has deepened through the devastating loss of his family home in the LA fires and through the challenging process of receiving help from others.• Matthew's house burned down in the LA Eaton fires in January, completely destroying their home and possessions• While treating a patient during the fire, Matthew demonstrated supernatural peace, explaining that everything important to him is "hidden in Jesus"• The Chan family experienced an overwhelming outpouring of love and support from their community after the fire• Matthew initially resisted when friends wanted to create a GoFundMe, but learned that true humility means allowing others to love you in their way• The legitimacy of a gift is established in the love of the giver, not in whether the recipient deserves or needs it• Matthew's son wisely observed: "You didn't cry when you lost something; you cry when you receive something"• Even while growing in gospel understanding, Matthew continues to learn how to communicate truth with the right heart motives• Living "the unattached life" means having your primary attachment with the Father, freeing you from unhealthy attachments to temporal things

Peace in the Storm: When Christ is in the Boat Today's readings highlight the theme of salvation as a dynamic, ongoing journey. The first reading recalls the story of Lot's rescue from Sodom, emphasizing that Abraham's persistent prayer played a key role in God's decision to save Lot's family. This teaches us that our prayers for others are powerful and never wasted. However, salvation also requires obedience and forward movement. Lot's wife looks back and becomes a pillar of salt . . . symbolizing bitterness and spiritual rigidity when we cling to the past instead of embracing change. True salvation calls for continual conversion and openness to transformation. Jesus Rebukes Two Storms on the Sea The Gospel complements this by recounting the storm on the sea, where Jesus rebukes not only the physical storm but also the inner storm of fear. The message is clear: storms in life are inevitable, but faith in Christ overcomes fear. Peace is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of Christ within it. Ultimately, we are reminded that the Christian journey involves daily growth in holiness, faith, hope, and charity, always moving forward, never backward. Listen to: Peace in the Storm: When Christ is in the Boat --------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote From The Homily When we are with Jesus, storms are inevitable. They'll come, we'll be disturbed. But what Jesus is calling us not to be afraid. We should have faith. Faith in him. We should trust him. And it is this trust that is going to give us peace. It is this trust that is going to give us courage to move on, that Jesus is with us. Peace is not absence of challenges. Peace is not absence of weaknesses. But peace is the presence of Christ, and that's very powerful. And when Christ is with us, when we know that Christ is with us, even in the midst of storms, we shall have peace even in the midst of persecutions. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Storm on the Sea of Galilee: Dutch Painter: Rembrandt: 1633 Uniquely, this painting was in a Boston Museum for almost 100 years, until 1990. It was stolen that year and remains missing. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Gospel Reading: Matthew 8: 23-27 First Reading: Genesis 19: 15-29
God wants to bless you with his very own peace, a peace that transcends understanding.
Storms will come. That's not a matter of if—but when. The question is: where will you stand when the wind picks up, and how will you respond when the waves crash in? The answer isn't in trying to control the storm—it's in knowing who's in the boat. Our springboard for today's discussion is:“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!' And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” — Mark 4:39 (ESV)The disciples panicked—and it's easy to understand why. The storm was real. The danger was intense. And Jesus was… asleep. That's how it feels sometimes, doesn't it? Like God's sleeping on your situation while everything around you falls apart. But notice what Jesus did—He didn't panic. He didn't match the chaos. He commanded peace. And peace obeyed. That same Jesus is with you now. He may not always calm the storm immediately, but He always brings peace to the one who calls on Him. Peace is not the absence of struggle—it's the presence of Christ in the middle of it.If you're overwhelmed right now, stop trying to control the outcome. Call on the One who controls the wind and the waves. Let Him quiet your heart even if the storm still rages around you.The goal isn't to escape the storm—the goal is to walk through it without losing your peace.Question of the Day:Are you trying to calm the storm yourself—or are you calling on the One who speaks to storms?Mini Call to Action:Take five minutes today, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Say aloud, “Peace. Be still.” Let those words settle into your spirit as a declaration of trust.Let's Pray:Jesus, I invite Your peace into the chaos of my life. Remind me that You are near, that You are greater than the storm, and that my soul can rest in You. In Your name, amen.Let's Get To Work!Peace doesn't come from the storm dying down—it comes from knowing Jesus never left.My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. Three Miracles: Week 3 - Peace in the Storm / Pastor Jeff Bowman by Hope City Church
Sun. Sand. Sea. And Soul Work Week 3: Peace in the Storm Peace isn't found in the absence of storms— It's found in the presence of Jesus. That day when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.' Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' MARK 4:35–41 When Life is Hard and it Feels Like God is Sleeping on the Job Sometimes Jesus Leads You into the Storm “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 Don't Confuse God's Silence With God's Absence “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 3. Say What's True, Even If You're Afraid “Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:8 4. You Can Have Peace Before the Storm Ends Your storm doesn't get the final word. Jesus does. You may not be able to calm your storm—but you can cling to the One who controls it.
As the disciples struggled against the waves in John 6, Jesus came to them walking on the water. He didn't still the storm—He joined them in it and safely delivered them. This message offers powerful reassurance: Jesus comes to you wherever you are, even in the middle of life's fiercest storms. He may not always calm the storm, but He will always carry you through it.

When life's storms come crashing down on us, where can we turn? We can turn to the Lord and look for His protection and provision. Join us today as we dive into a wonderful psalm that gives strength and peace in the storms of life. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Psalm 46 is about finding peace in the midst of major upheaval. Is your world undergoing upheaval? If so, in what way? If a person did not trust God in such a storm, how would they respond? How are you responding differently? 2. How does verse 1 remind us that when we face difficulties, we can find refuge in God no matter what they are? What does the word “refuge” picture? How is this evident (or not evident) in your own life? 3. The “present help” in verse 1 speaks of active, real help from the Lord. Where have you seen the Lord help you in your storms? 4. Why kind of devastation is the psalmist referring to in verses 2 & 3? What might this look like in our lives today? 5. The “selah” at the end of verse 3 is calling us to pause and reflect on what he's just said. Take a moment and re-read verses 1-3 and summarize what they're saying here: 6. Verse 4 takes us to a place where there is no storm, no bitterness, no division, or hatred or problems at work, health, etc. Why do we need to remember that such a place exists? According to this psalm, who lives there? How are they being refreshed (in verse 4)? How do we abide “there” even when we live in a fallen world here? 7. How would a river sustain a city in these ancient times? Was there a river flowing into Jerusalem? In verse 5, why was it important for the people of Israel to know that even through there was no river in Jerusalem, the Lord was her sustenance? In practical terms, what does this principle look like for believers today? 8. Even though God's grace and peace continues in the storm, in verse 6, what do the nations continue to do as well? Why? 9. What is the Lord's response to the nations in verse 6? What happens with this response? What principle is the author teaching us here? 10. According to verse 7, who is with us? What does verse 7 say about the impact His presence has in our lives? 11. The word “hosts” in verse 7 speaks of armies. What armies does the Lord control? Why is this important for us to remember? 12. Since verse 7 ends with “selah”, how about taking a moment to re-read verses 4-7 and summarizing them here: 13. Why does verse 8 call us to “behold the works of the Lord”? What works might he be referring to? Why does this strengthen our peace in the midst of a storm? 14. What does verse 9 show us about the Lord's control over the nations? Why is this important, even when the world around us is the source of our storm? 15. Verse 10 calls us to “cease striving”. This could also be translated as “be still”. If we're to be still, who are we trusting to act on our behalf? In your own live, are you more likely to be striving or being still the storms of your life? What would it look like to be still in these storms? What kind of faith and trust in the Lord is required to be still in this way? 16. Verse 11 repeats the encouragement from verse 7. Why do you think the author repeats himself here? 17. Verse 11 also ends with “selah”. How about taking a moment to re-read and summarize the principles from verses 8-11 here: 18. In your own life, where do you need the Lord's peace? What principles from this psalm speak to your situation today? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Today we launched our new series, "Breaking Through the Storm." In Part 1, "Peace in the Storm," we looked at Mark 4:35-41 — where Jesus calms a raging storm and reminds us that His peace is greater than any fear we face. Key reminders from today's message: Storms are inevitable, but Jesus is with us. His silence doesn't mean His absence. Fear reveals where our faith is anchored. Jesus has authority over every storm. We don't have to fear because of His Promise, His Presence, and His Peace. Scriptures: Mark 4:35-41, John 16:33, 2 Timothy 1:7

Pastor Chris explores the idea of peace, especially the kind of peace that only God can give. He contrasts the temporary peace the world offers, like feeling calm and relaxed, with the lasting peace that comes from a deep connection with Christ. Pastor Chris explains that true peace isn't just about having no problems. It's about feeling God's presence in your life. By focusing on God, trusting in Him, and being thankful, we can experience this incredible peace,

Bishop Robert Barron’s Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies
Friends, our Gospel for today is Mark's account of the stilling of the sea. We know the basic structure of the story: Jesus is in the boat with the disciples; when a storm kicks up, he's asleep in the stern. The disciples are panicking and wake Jesus up, and once he's awakened, he calms the storm. Then he says, “Do you not yet have faith?” What I'm going to do is give you three separate interpretations of this story, all of which have come up out of the ancient Church, and all of which shed light on the spiritual life.
