In this episode of the Books for Men podcast, host Douglas Vigliotti discusses the work of author George Pelecanos, particularly his book Owning Up. Vigliotti praises the author's unpretentious writing style, his focus on realism, and his ability to depict the impact of various societal issues from multiple perspectives. He also compares the work's thematical elements to The Deuce, a TV Show that Pelecanos co-created with David Simon, which explores the passage of time and the evolution of communities. Owning Up consists of four vignettes that tackle issues such as racism, the criminal justice system, the interconnectedness of history, and near misses of life. Vigliotti concludes by sharing two quotes from the book highlighting the importance of truth and the power of written history. If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the podcast. “I do want to point out–many writers don't want to admit to it or say it–it's just words on a page until everybody else makes it come alive. You had Idris Elba and Wood Harris acting in that scene. I had Joe Chappelle shooting it. He was the director. All the craftsmen and artists that worked on that made it what it is. And that's actually what I like about it. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD Jacob and Willy go in deep on what many TV types consider to be the best TV episode. We talk about how Brother Mouzone may or may not have special levitating powers, all the mistakes Stringer made along the way to get himself shot twice in the chest, and how his swan song hangout session with Avon is really uncomfortably powerful. Other topics include how Joe Chappelle is on the VIP list of Wire directors for making cops glued to their computer screens must-see television, the influences Simon and Pelecanos got from old Sergio Leone western films, how Stringer Bell's community college must have failed him since he wasn't able to detect Clay Davis double-crossing him in a business deal, and how it becomes more apparent with repeated viewings that Carcetti is not nearly as idealistic as one might think when watching this show for the first time. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegodswillnotsaveyou/support

In particular, they cover how the original blockchain for NEM is now called NIS1 and the new blockchain is Symbol. The goal of NIS1 is to serve as a developer sandbox for testing new applications. Symbol is to be used for enterprise-grade applications that are ready to scale. NEM has always provided flexible and customizable solutions through simple, yet powerful, built-in features. The original blockchain for NEM has never experienced downtime, chain hacks or major outages, making it reliable for developers, companies, and institutions. Check out the episode and learn more! Early in February 2021 I got together with crypto trader Nicholas Pelecanos. Nick got into trading pretty early on in life. When he blew his first account, he formed a trading club which became the most successful university trading club in Australia. He tried a bit of everything to begin with but gravitated to Bitcoin. Today, as Head of Trading at NEM Group, Nick has his own list of clients and has become something of an expert in all things blockchain.  --BEFORE YOU HEAD OFF… as we all know, a lot can go wrong in trading. Some days you can find yourself gasping for breath and telling yourself you need a complete break from it.Well, take a look at this. It's a way of making passive income by taking a stake in the crypto space but doesn't require you to trade crypto. The company in question is called Yieldnodes. And essentially, what these guys do is provide cutting edge services to the blockchain network, such as maintaining e-wallets and the like. It's very easy to get set up on the platform, and the returns are truly exceptional, averaging around 10% per month. Once you factor in compounding you could be looking at just north of 200% per annum. Here's another thing I think is really important: Yieldnodes have allowed members to audit their incomings and outgoings and found them to be entirely transparent.  I personally think this is an exciting proposition and, if you sign up through my link, instead of the usual minimum deposit of 500 Euros, you can make a start with just 50 Euros. Heck, some people put that on the lottery every weekend! So why not plant a seed today with Yieldnodes and see what grows from there?By pass the 500 Euro minimum requirment and start participating in the Yieldnodes project with as little as 50 Euros via this link while helping to keep this podcast going. Support the showPlease follow A Trader's Life on Twitter.

On this week’s episode of On Story from Austin Film Festival and PRI, we bring you a look at independent releases including Rob Reiner’s, LBJ, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird and we bring you a look at how the classic 1970’s action thriller, The Seven-Ups influenced HBO’s hit series, The Deuce. We start this episode of On Story with a look at how the film, LBJ came to life with actor Woody Harrelson who portrays the president and director and producer, Rob Reiner. We continue this episode of On Story with actress Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird. Director Greta Gerwig was in attendance for this year’s 24th Annual Austin Film Festival and discusses how the film came to life. The directrial debut by actress Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha, Mistress America), Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn, The Grand Budapest Hotel) as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a young woman who fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Director Greta Gerwig was in attendance for this year’s 24th Annual Austin Film Festival. Clips in the following segment copyright: Lady Bird, InterActiveCorp Films, LLC and A24. In this final segment we discuss some of the influences on the HBO series, The Deuce with author, writer, and co-creator of the hit series, George Pelecanos. I spoke with Pelecanos at a special retrospective screening of the detective thriller, The Seven-Ups and how the film influenced some of the parallels of his show, The Deuce. George Pelecanos is an independent film producer, screenwriter, the recipient of numerous international writing awards, and was a producer and writer on the HBO series The Wire, Treme, The Pacific, and the upcoming The Deuce.  He is the author of twenty novels set in and around Washington, D.C.

THE TURNAROUND, George Pelecanos's fifteenth novel, is the work of a mature writer at the top of his game. It is a thoughtful examination of one event that permanently alters the lives of six young men—three black, three white. The story is both as straightforward and as complex as the characters it involves, and pulls the reader in through their palpable suffering. By creating such intimacy with this ensemble cast, Pelecanos is able to explore some of the most pressing issues facing America today—race, class, and the foreign war that districts us from these domestic battles—with depth and nuance, and without any trace of artificiality or authorial tampering. A less experienced or less gifted writer would have been tempted, in handling such material, to deliver a message, and so would have ruined a story that is infinitely more rich because it stays focused on the people it involves. Pelecanos reveals how his youthful aspirations to be a filmmaker, his experience writing for HBO's THE WIRE, and his work on the Derek Strange and Terry Quinn books all prepared him to write this understated masterpiece that is THE TURNAROUND.
