When the devotees first went to India, Prabhupāda was there, and he invited devotees to come over because he wanted to show what happened. You know, he went alone to America, and he comes back with all these Americans. In India, at the time, people were looking to Americans and go, like, 'How are we going to catch up to these guys? We want what they have.' And then Prabhupāda plays this trick on them, where he comes to America, he gets all these Westerners, and he comes back with a big airplane full of Westerners. 'Here you go. They want what you are supposed to want, which is pure love for God.' In Surat, devotees went there, and they were having kīrtana, and people came out of their houses, and they were grabbing the dust after the devotees walked there, so much so that there were holes in the road! And devotees were surprised and taken aback, and they asked Prabhupāda later, 'Why were they doing that?' And he said, 'Because you follow the four regulative principles and you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, anywhere you go in the world, you'll be honored because of them.' The greatest desire one can have is what Prahlāda Mahārāja showed us: 'Oh my Lord, if I have any desire within my heart, let it be no material desire, only the desire to serve You.' So we have the stark examples: Hiraṇyakaśipu—boo! And then you have Prahlāda Mahārāja, he's worshipable to us. In fact, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, when He would sit with Gadādhara Paṇḍita to hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, He wanted to hear that story over and over again. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta told all his disciples to read Prahlāda 108 times. Hear that story over and over and over and over again, and he's famous, Prahlada Maharaja. The third theme, besides sincerity and wanting to help others, that's so prominent in Prahlāda's prayers is that he said, "My Lord," when he's right in front of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, he says, "I just want to serve my spiritual master." Kṛṣṇa has appeared for him. He's right in front of him, and he doesn't say, "I'll serve You, my Lord." He said, "I'll serve my spiritual master to serve You." And that mood of being the servant of the servant, servant of the servant, he said, "Nārada Muni saved me. My spiritual master saved me. So how could I ever forget his service?" What's the verse? Say it loud. Evaṁ janaṁ nipatitaṁ prabhavāhi-kūpe kāmābhikāmam anu yaḥ prapatan prasaṅgāt kṛtvātmasāt surarṣiṇā bhagavan gṛhītaḥ so 'haṁ kathaṁ nu visṛje tava bhṛtya-sevām (SB 7.9.28) 'Bhṛtya,' I'll be the servant of my spiritual master. "How I was falling into a blind well full of snakes, but my spiritual master saved me from this. That's His mercy that I can see You." So, this is one of the very important lessons that Prahlād Mahārāj teaches us, is to become trained in the spiritual science. Don't neglect the Bhagavad-gītā. Or should I say it in the positive? It's better, isn't it, because that might go and you may think, 'Neglect the Bhagavad-gītā.' No. Read Bhagavad-gītā every day. How's that for a challenge? If one reads Bhagavad-gītā every day, then you won't have to make excuses for why you make mistakes, or why you made mistakes, or why you feel morose, or why you feel confused, and so forth, because those who read the Bhagavad-gītā every day don't get confused. They see things as they are, and they see the difference between matter and spirit. And that's fairly simple. Let me just check, do we have any Bhagavad-gītās? Just checking to see if we have them on site. Do we have any here? I heard that we've distributed over approximately 500 million books since Prabhupāda started book distribution, and we have a few of them here. Bhagavad-gītā is available. Do any of you have it at home? Just checking. It sounds simplistic, but sometimes the simple things are the true answer. It's called Occam's razor. So if you take this challenge that Prahlād Mahārāj is putting out—educate yourself the way a geologist becomes educated to see the way the world's actually working and to find out where the gold is—then you'll never be bewildered. So if you read at least a chapter of Bhagavad-gītā every day, hear the verses, and go deeply within the purports as much as possible, then you'll see the world and find the great treasures in life and avoid the difficulties. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Seventh Canto, ninth chapter, we get a kind of fruit because we hear the prayers that are coming from Prahlāda's heart, and from those we can learn many, many lessons. The fact that the Lord came to save Prahlāda and to answer his prayers, and hearing the prayers that Prahlāda offered, is an important exercise for the devotees because Prahlāda represents the foundational position from which one can actually enter into devotional service—that is, selfless service. As he says to Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, who offers him benedictions, "I don't want anything," and he really means it because Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva had to ask him a few times. They said, "No, take something." And Prahlāda said, "No, you're my master. I'm your servant. I serve Your command, and that's what I do. I don't want anything, please." And so this is a foundational point for those who are entering into the realm of bhakti: "I don't want anything in return." This is where one starts to notice the reciprocation of the Lord in a very sweet way—that I'm giving to the Lord without asking anything in return, and that He goes out of His way to give things to such a devotee. In the Seventh Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, I shall describe to you how Prahlāda Mahārāja caused the Lord to assume the form of Nṛsiṁhadeva. Prahlāda Mahārāja, the topmost devotee of the Lord, is a reservoir of all the good qualities of great personalities. His character and activities have delivered all the fallen members of his demoniac family. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva is very dear to this exalted personality. Prahlāda Mahārāja is the subject of the Seventh Canto. If you measure which topics are there in the entire lengthy seven cantos of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva makes a very short appearance. He just comes in, tears apart Hiraṇyakaśipu, and that's it. But Prahlāda is featured throughout as a tender child, offering instructions to his classmates and also praying to Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. These are memorable prayers which have been repeated over millennia, people remembering what is the basic entry-level standard for the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or bhakti, or what we call devotional service, and that is, "I don't want anything except to serve. I just want to serve Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's devotees, and whatever I have for myself, it's only so that I can go on serving." And Prahlāda is the emblem of that. Interestingly, in the Bṛhat-Bhāgavatāmṛta, when Nārada Muni is trying to find the devotee who's received the most mercy from Kṛṣṇa and is interviewing different people, observing them, when he comes to Prahlāda Mahārāja, Prahlāda said, "I didn't get much mercy actually." He said, "Because I didn't get any service; He just came to save me, but He didn't give me specific service to do." And that actually is very telling, because when you get service, then you can go on doing that eternally. If you are granted some service, like, SKP, he just walked in with the list. Well, according to the logic of the scriptures, which talks about watering the root of a tree, if we figure out that by watering the root of the tree, the whole tree becomes nourished, and we also, as we discussed yesterday, Prahlāda Mahārāja, points us to a principle through which we can be fully satisfied—not partially, not temporarily, but fully and eternally satisfied—naivātmanaḥ prabhur ayaṁ nija-lābha-pūrṇo, mānaṁ janād aviduṣaḥ karuṇo vṛṇīte, yad yaj jano bhagavate vidadhīta mānaṁ, tac cātmane prati-mukhasya yathā mukha-śrīḥ (SB7.9.11). And that is that if you satisfy the Lord, or at least you even attempt to satisfy Him, you have an idea in your heart that "I would like to please God," and you can find the ways and means to do that, then you'll become satisfied, because we're parts of God. After Hiraṇyakaśipu was killed, the Lord continued to be very angry, and the demigods, headed by Lord Brahmā, could not pacify Him. Even mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, the constant companion of Nārāyaṇa, could not dare come before Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. Then Lord Brahmā asked Prahlāda Mahārāja to go forward and pacify the Lord's anger. Prahlāda Mahārāja, being confident of the affection of his master, Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, was not afraid at all. He very gravely appeared before the Lord's lotus feet and offered Him respectful obeisances. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, being very much affectionate toward Prahlāda Mahārāja, put His hand on Prahlāda's head, and because of being personally touched by the Lord, Prahlāda Mahārāja immediately achieved brahma-jñāna, spiritual knowledge. I was thinking about how today, in the world because people don't know this. This means they don't know that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Everything emanates from Him. They try to solve the problems of life through their own devices. They make adjustments—politically, economically, physically, socially—and all of them create more complications. That is, when we try to solve our problems through our own intellects, we always create more problems. This is something Prahlād Mahārāj mentions in his prayers to Lord Nṛsiṁhadev, that the so-called remedies of this world are often times worse than the disease itself. And so, while I was reading the Puruṣa Sūkta, I was thinking how the ultimate solution to life always traces back to what Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā: "man-manā bhava mad-bhakto (18.65) – Just remember Me." In the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Kavirāja Gosvāmī mentions that if you remember Lord Caitanya, then difficult things become easy. And if you forget Him, then what should become simple becomes very complicated (CC Adi 14.1).Near the end of the Puruṣa Sūkta, it is mentioned in a benedictory verse that anyone who becomes aware of The Supreme Puruṣa, who is the source of this manifested world, becomes liberated. It's something that Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā also, everything's there in the Gītā, right? The way one resides in Vṛndāvan or in Rādhā-kuṇḍa isn't necessarily just to move in, and I'll stop with this point, but it means that, we should be careful. Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that you should live in Vṛndāvan always; if you can't be there physically, then you should live there within your mind and heart. So if you're living here, you can cultivate that mood. It does help to go to Vṛndāvan during our lifetimes if we could make the pilgrimage to Vṛndāvan, as suggested by Prahlāda Mahārāja in today's verse 'vanaṁ gato yad dharim āśrayeta'. You should try to go there and take shelter. My personal experience is going to the dhāma and spending time there means that you develop a relationship with it because the dhāma is non-different from Kṛṣṇa. If you go there and serve the dhāma and you hear in the dhāma, then you start to develop an affection for the dhāma and you think, "Let me be in the dhāma." And then, you can think of the dhāma, and that was Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's recommendation or order that 'Live in Vṛndāvan', but it means live there within your heart. Some people move to Vṛndāvan, and they're thinking, "I wish I was in Delhi because I could watch a video right now. I won't do it in Vṛndāvan, but maybe I'll go to Delhi and watch a video and come back." And somebody might be in Delhi, or the middle of France for that matter, and be pining for Vṛndāvan and think, "I wish I was in Vṛndāvan and I'm not qualified," and therefore they're feeling separation for the dhāma. They're more in Vṛndāvan than someone who maybe has moved into Vṛndāvan and then, became entangled in, mundane thoughts and so forth. Therefore, as we'll discuss later from some of Prabhupāda's purports and instructions, when we approach the dhāma, we should be very careful. Prabhupāda once said you can stay there three days or three years. Three days means you go there very carefully and offer obeisances to Kṛṣṇa Balarāma and be in some of the Kirtans and so forth. Three days, so you don't make any offense and then go or three years if you have service. When we go to the dhāma, main point is you should have some service there if you're going to stay a long period of time. Because often times people go to the dhāma and think I'll hear and chant 24 hours a day, and then they get there and khrh..And you find out, yeah, you still got to find out where to eat, right, because you are hungry, right? And then it's like you're in the food line: "Do you have a plate? I don't have a plate. You need a spoon." All the other types of things well up in one's life, and it becomes a situation where one might become a desperado in the dhāma, and that's also not ideal. So we have to cultivate the relationship with the dhāma very carefully, and one can do so from here in France, being in this dhāma but cultivating knowledge of the dhāma through hearing and chanting, but also visiting. In one of the famous verses of Prahlāda Mahārāja (SB 7.9.28): evaṁ janaṁ nipatitaṁ prabhavāhi-kūpe kāmābhikāmam anu yaḥ prapatan prasaṅgāt kṛtvātmasāt surarṣiṇā bhagavan gṛhītaḥ so 'haṁ kathaṁ nu visṛje tava bhṛtya-sevām he says, and Prabhupāda was very fond of this verse and it fits well with today and the theme of what do we do now, that Prabhupāda is no longer physically here, as we often repeat. 'Evaṁ janaṁ nipatitaṁ', Prahlāda expresses this sense of gratitude that you saved me, my Spiritual Master saved me from what? From a pit full of snakes and he says 'kāmābhikāmam anu yaḥ prapatan prasaṅgāt' .I was just following the normal course of activities which leads, one after another into this unfortunate well, where there's no escape. And then he says 'kṛtvātmasāt surarṣiṇā', but you've purified me, 'kṛtvātmasāt'. He said you caused me to come to a higher standard of life. 'Surarṣiṇā' who did it? The sage Nārda, my Spiritual Master, 'bhagavan gṛhītaḥ'. And then he finishes, 'so 'haṁ kathaṁ nu visṛje tava bhṛtya-sevām'. So he says then how can I give up his service? So the impetus.. ...and He goes on to explain in great detail what is the real qualification. It's not that one has the status of a brāhmaṇa, but it's one's a devotee. In Prahlāda Mahārāja's prayers (SB 7.9.10), he says, "viprād dvi-ṣaḍ-guṇa-yutād aravinda-nābha-pādāravinda-vimukhāt śvapacaṁ variṣṭham manye tad-arpita-mano-vacanehitārtha-prāṇaṁ punāti sa kulaṁ na tu bhūrimānaḥ." He says that I think that even if somebody's from a brahmana status and has all twelve of the brahminical qualifications—there's a book called Sanat-sujāta that describes all the ways that one should conform to brahminism—he says even if somebody has all those qualities, but they're not a devotee, they're averse to devotional service, he said such a person can't purify himself even with all these brahminical qualifications. He said but a person who comes from a low family, how low? Somebody who's got a pretty inferior diet, śvapaca. It's one of the ways that status is meted out, is by what people eat. That's pretty common. So if somebody comes from one of those families where they eat things that would cause other people to cringe who are in the mode of goodness, Prahlāda Mahārāja says if they come from that background, but they've become a devotee, then they're purified. What's more, they can purify not just themselves, but also their families and everybody else. It's the main consideration if one's a devotee or not a devotee. In the Gita, Kṛṣṇa gives some indication (BG 3.9): yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara. That if you do some yagya in any place, any time, then you'll feel naturally satisfied because this is our eternal constitutional position. We enjoy unlimitedly by serving Krishna. The more we give to Krishna, the happier we become. Naivātmanaḥ prabhur ayaṁ nija-lābha-pūrṇaḥ mānaṁ janād aviduṣaḥ karuṇo vṛṇīte yad yaj jano bhagavate vidadhīta mānaṁ tac cātmane prati-mukhasya yathā mukha-śrīḥ (SB 7.9.11). Prahlāda Mahārāja says that those who are properly aligned know that the more they give to Kṛṣṇa, the happier they become because he says, and he gives it an example, we're parts of Kṛṣṇa. We're like reflections of Kṛṣṇa. The way if you look in the mirror, you'll see your reflection, and if you stand in front of the mirror and decorate your face, put on nice tilak or gopi dots, then you'll look and see that the reflection is also decorated. So, he gives this example that we feel naturally happy when we make an arrangement for Kṛṣṇa's senses to be satisfied. One of the ways that Ekadasi is especially honored is because it's a day in which there's a surge from the moon, and the senses become more active. So, the devotees' reasoning is, well, Kṛṣṇa's senses can get more enjoyment on this day of Ekadashi, so we'll just fast and feed Kṛṣṇa and serve Kṛṣṇa as much as possible on Ekadashi. Because the devotees' idea is that the more sense gratification we give to Kṛṣṇa, then the happier we are. Of course, they're not considering, are the devotees, that I'll be happy by serving Kṛṣṇa. They're just aware of the fact that they only want to serve. They're just aware of the fact that they only want to serve Kṛṣṇa. And Kṛṣṇa, of course, notices that the devotees in serving him selflessly, are enjoying more than he is. This is the reason for....
