Few figures have shaped modern American soccer more profoundly than Alan Rothenberg ("The Big Bounce: The Surge That Shaped the Future of U.S. Soccer") — and in this revelatory conversation, he tells the story in his own words. Best known as the founding architect of Major League Soccer and the driving force behind the record-breaking 1994 FIFA World Cup, Rothenberg's influence on the game in the United States stretches back decades earlier than most fans realize. Long before MLS kicked off in 1996, he was immersed in the sport's early, fragile professional era. In the late 1960s, Rothenberg worked alongside Jack Kent Cooke in the United Soccer Association, helping operate the Los Angeles Wolves — an ambitious effort to import top international clubs to American audiences. He later held a brief ownership stake in the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League, gaining firsthand insight into the promise and ultimate collapse of pro soccer's first boom-and-bust cycle in the U.S. A pivotal turning point came when Rothenberg ran the soccer competition for the 1984 Summer Olympics. At a time when many doubted the American market, the tournament drew unexpectedly strong crowds — helping persuade FIFA that the United States could successfully host a World Cup. As president of the United States Soccer Federation from 1990 to 1998, Rothenberg delivered on that promise. The 1994 World Cup became the most financially successful in history to that point, and he fulfilled the bid commitment to launch MLS — creating the stable Division I league that had eluded the country for generations. He also chaired the 1999 Women's World Cup, another watershed moment. In this candid interview, Rothenberg reflects on risk, resistance, political maneuvering, and the long game of institution-building — offering rare, behind-the-scenes insight into how American soccer finally found its footing. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOK: "The Big Bounce: The Surge That Shaped the Future of U.S. Soccer": https://amzn.to/4kSgacQ SPONSOR THANKS: Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/
The Indian men's hockey team has begun 2026 — a year of major stakes — on a worrying note. Four matches in the Rourkela leg of the FIH Pro League ended in four defeats, including a humiliating 8–0 loss to Argentina. With the Asian Games in Japan and the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium just months away, the results have raised uncomfortable questions. Are these early-season stumbles merely part of a longer preparation cycle, or do they point to serious issues in defence, goalkeeping, fitness and mentality? Should youngsters have been blooded in earlier? And how much pressure is mounting on coach Craig Fulton? In this episode of In Focus, we examine what went wrong in Rourkela, the search for stability in goal after P.R. Sreejesh, and why the core group of players who have been in the team for years need to be pulled up for the poor run of form. (Editor's note: This episode was recorded ahead of the Hobart leg of the FIH Pro League games) Host: Reuben Joe Joseph Guest: Uthra Ganesan, The Hindu's hockey correspondent Learn more about your ad choices. As we roll into our 21st year of the show we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and welcome you to our first show of 2026. On this first show for 2026 we catch up with Bonita Mersiades who after years working in sports administration moved into the world of publishing. Bonita, set up FairPlay Publishing so that sportspeople and authors are able to share their stories and the history of Australian sport is being preserved. Check out the books on offer on their website and on the SHOP PAGE Rather than having specifc topics in sport in recent times Ashley and John look back on the past month of sport since the last show. Under discussion are The Hockey India League where Ashley was commentating in January. Then it moves onto the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico and whether the threat of a boycott is actually followed through by any nation. Even if it isn’t how many fans can afford the price of the tickets for games and will we see FIFA having to bus crowds in to fill the stadia in the USA? John then picks at the scab that was the Ashes series in Australia. Who is to blame for England’s poor showing? Was the preparation as adequate as some have tried to claim? Ashley does not hold back labelling it England’s most embarrassing tour to Australia in his lifetime. To round out the show John questions the options today of viewing sport such as the T20 World Cup and explains why he will not be watching, also the timing of Australia’s Pro League matches is questioned, while Ashley asks for the League to be brought to a prompt end for everyone’s sake. Cristiano Ronaldo BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Cristiano Ronaldo once again dominated headlines over the past few days both on and off the pitch. The most talked-about event was his shocking red card during an international fixture against Ireland, which marked the very first time the Portuguese superstar has ever been sent off in over 220 appearances for his national team. The moment was met with relentless boos and jeers from the Irish crowd in Dublin, and video of the incident quickly went viral as fans speculated whether the suspension might impact his availability for Portugal's World Cup 2026 opener, a subject of fierce debate on social media and among pundits according to Economic Times. Almost immediately, Ronaldo responded publicly for the first time via his official channels, posting a message of defiance and unity for his Portugal teammates, urging them to remain focused and positive no matter the circumstances. His message was widely shared, reading, "Go team! All together today and forever! For Portugal and for our flag!" according to Goal. He later returned to social media with a more cryptic message after Al Nassr's final Pro League game, sharing a moody image of himself in his club colors and writing, "This is over. The story still being. Thanks to all," fueling speculation about his club future as reported by AOL and generating major headlines about a possible departure from Saudi Arabia.Media houses like Marca and Reuters fueled the rumor mill by reporting that a major Brazilian club had reached out to Ronaldo's agents about a move for next year's FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, though sources from Wydad Casablanca clarified that their approach was just idle talk. During this tense period, Ronaldo made a notable public appearance, maintaining his signature composure and optimism ahead of the 2026 World Cup, even as reporters pressed him about his controversial red card, future plans, and the rumors swirling on every platform from X to Instagram. Performance-wise, Ronaldo closed the Saudi Pro League season as its top scorer yet again, recording his 25th goal and helping Al Nassr clinch third place and qualify for the upcoming AFC Champions League, per Transfermarkt via AOL. With his contract up at season's end, the world is watching to see whether this chapter ends quietly or with a bombshell transfer now teased by his social media ambiguity and the international headlines that follow his every move.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI
In Part 1, Lee and Paul are joined by Nathan Joyes, a South American football expert and the host of the Copa Club Podcast to talk about some sensational stories from the CONMEBOL nations this season. Why do Chile's new champions Coquimbo Unido have a pirate theme? Which strategic decision helped Mirassol rise from the sixth tier to the brink of the Copa Libertadores? Is there something in the water in Argentina, where underdogs are sweeping up the trophies? And which other South American country deserves a special mention? In Part 2, the focus moves to elsewhere in the southern hemisphere: Oceania. Lee attended the soft launch event for the OFC Pro League, the continent's first-ever professional competition, and has some interesting nuggets to share. Where and when will the OFC Pro League get under way? How will the tournament benefit the Tahiti and Fiji national teams. Power, Passion, and Pro Softball Grind tells the story of Linnah Rebolledo, a championship-winning professional softball player in Mexico's Liga Mexicana de Softbol and a key member of the national team. Coach Aaron hosts alongside co-hosts Michaela Beachy and Lily Scott for a conversation filled with determination, energy, and championship memories. Linnah's career began in Riverside, California, where she played baseball before switching to softball. Her journey took her to Utah Valley University, where she became known for her versatility and power at the plate. “I've always liked to beat everyone. I'm very competitive,” she shares. That drive eventually led her to Mexico's pro league and a title in its inaugural season. Michaela Beachy's ACL Comeback Before Linnah's story begins, Michaela talks about her recovery from ACL surgery. She explains the nerves before the operation, the pain of the first days, and the joy of small wins like completing the stationary bike. Her focus on progress, even in slow steps, shows how resilience can define an athlete's path. From Baseball to Pro Softball Champion Linnah's competitive fire started early. She was recruited from baseball into softball by a persistent coach, and her skills grew fast. At Utah Valley University, she mastered shortstop, third base, and outfield. Her professional debut brought an unforgettable championship moment — a bases-loaded bunt that turned into a triple and secured the win. That single play made history and proved her ability to deliver under pressure. Mexico's Electric Softball Atmosphere Softball in Mexico offers more than just competition. Fans pack men's stadiums, mariachi music plays between pitches, and crowds often reach 20,000 people. The league has already grown from four to six teams, with more expansion ahead. This high-energy environment fuels players like Linnah and inspires the next generation, including Lily, to dream about pro careers. A Story of Grit and Growth This episode blends stories of recovery, historic wins, and the passion that drives elite athletes. It shows how dedication, opportunity, and love for the game create moments that last a lifetime.
