Topics Discussed: Greg's experience during 2020 and the challenges he faced both personally and professionally.  The lessons that Greg has taken away from 2020.  Greg's realisation that a lot of people are not living a healthy lifestyle, and his aspirations to address these people and help them live in a healthy way. The socio-economic impact of health, and the gender gap in health. The difficulty of changing behaviour, and the psychology required to achieve it. How a bespoke, personalised approach is one of the best ways of instilling a change of behaviour in someone and giving them the confidence to make a change. How we are always looking for shortcuts when there are none.  The importance of setting goals correctly, and focusing on how much time is needed so it is manageable, achievable and aligned with who you are as a person. The redundancy theory; the person who is supporting you should always be looking at the point when they will no longer be supporting you, and how good coaches are always considering this. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and how intrinsic is more important in the long term. The importance of resilience and surrounding yourself with a good team is integral in achieving anything worthwhile.  How you can cultivate humility, trust and empathy in being a leader. The importance of transparency and trust between higher up management and the employees in order to get good productivity out of your workers. How 2020 has tested businesses a lot, and the ones that responded the best are the ones that we're focusing on welfare and ensuring their workers are doing well rather than setting targets. The difference between absenteeism and presenteeism, and how it is much more important to focus on making your workers present when they are at work, as opposed to getting them to work for longer periods of time. How exercise and maintaining an active environment can increase presenteeism and productivity. Examples of unhealthy working environments and the changes Phil and Greg implemented to make them healthier and more productivity. How 2020 shone a light on mental and physical health, and how we need to be social in order to be fulfilled and happy. How you need to take care of yourself before you take care of other people, otherwise you won't be of any use to anyone. How taking small steps can help you make big changes in your life, and an example of what these changes could be in both a personal and professional setting. The importance of rest and recovery in elite performance, how it's hard to achieve, and how it is those at the top who are the most guilty at working their employees or athletes too hard. Greg's love for open water swimming, the link between it and cold water therapy, and the physical and mental benefits of it. This week’s podcast guest is a genuine inspiration. As a child burns survivor, she has very visible scars on her back. She has encountered a lot of ignorance in other people around this. People who think it is ok to video her without her permission. To educate their kids publicly about burns in her earshot without involving her in the conversation. Telling her she should not be uncovered in public. Being aware of these judgements, it is no wonder that she began to assume that anyone she saw looking at her, people laughing or even just talking near her, were saying unkind things about her. After a long struggle, feeling upset and hiding away, one day her response just changed. It was a definite case of ‘fake it until you make it’ as she certainly didn’t feel confident, letting her sarong drop as she stood, hands on hips, in her swimsuit on the beach. But one act of courage led to another, and soon she was swimming 21 lengths in 21 pools in 21 bikinis, promoting the message that it is ok to be yourself. She has since gone on to challenge what diversity in fashion and body positivity mean. That this isn’t just about plus size models but those with scars and skin conditions as well. Her message to us is that we need to learn to embrace what we have and be our own beautiful selves. The wild swimming community is well known for being non judgemental and accepting. One of the biggest barriers for beginners can just be the act of being seen in public in a swimsuit. For anyone who hasn’t quite reached the nirvana of embracing the body you have, this episode is for you. Happy New Year! Here's the podcast you need to kick start your 2019 with a massive bang! Today, we're very lucky to be talking with Professor Greg Whyte OBE - a legend in the Sports and Exercise Science world and a guy who has helped raise in excess of £40 million for Sport / Comic Relief with over 30 amazing challenges of human endurance with some of the world's most famous celebrities. Greg was Swim Smooth Head Coach Paul Newsome's sports physiologist as part of Chris Jones's One Vision triathlon team back in the mid-90s and the inspiration behind Paul following his path in sports science and coaching. Greg's book "Achieve the Impossible" is exactly what you need to kick start your year the right way. It's a brilliant compendium that seeks to help you set yourself some objectives for the future and then go after them with the type of tenacity that allowed Little Britain comedian David Walliams to swim the English Channel in an amazing 10h30m and to then swim the length of the River Thames (some 140+ miles in 8 days). You can see more about the book here: http://www.achievetheimpossible.co.uk We go into great depth about how to take on these amazing endurance events and look at how 4 "normal" ladies from the UK (all of whom have faced various personal challenges in their life), go from swimming head-up breaststroke to swimming the English Channel in under 14 hours in some terrible conditions. WARNING!! This is super inspirational and you can observe the full documentary on this here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf9BW-h3ktXkOuKTJ9hkJOw We hope you love the podcast with Greg and that it sets you up for a great 2019! In this episode you’ll hear: -Greg’s three steps for anyone who wants to achieve the seemingly impossible -how he designs training plans for non-athletic celebrities attempting monumental endurance challenges -which of his celeb clients has impressed Greg the most -the positive mental gains we could all get from setting a New Year challenge -Greg’s top methods for faster recovery during extreme training -why we shouldn’t fear exercise-induced inflammation -the reason Greg thinks post-training ice baths are a bad idea -which ‘expensive’ muscle recovery therapy he doesn’t endorse -how Greg helps people with cancer to potentially reverse muscle loss caused by chemotherapy -his most fascinating discovery about human performance during his career so far -why we need to keep challenging dogma -Greg’s proudest sporting career moment -plus, how Greg turned a long-held scientific belief on its head by proving it was wrong Watch the video or read the article at HealthHackers.uk

Clinical psychologist and broadcaster Professor Tanya Byron joins Richard Coles and Aasmah Mir to talk tales of the clinic, how a family tragedy sparked her interest in psychology and destigmatising vulnerable people. Becoming unexpectedly jobless in 2012 prompted Michelle Thomas to start paying people to tell her their stories. The response was so amazing she's now crowd-funding a book which will feature some of stories. This week marks 70 years since the end of the second world war in Europe. Listener Liesbeth Langford got in touch to share her family's story of growing up in occupied Netherlands and sheltering a young Jewish woman. Professor Greg Whyte is the man behind David Walliams successful channel swim attempt, Davina McCall's challenge to run, swim and cycle from Edinburgh to London in seven days and the person that inspired Dermot O'Leary to dance for 24 hours non-stop all for Comic Relief. As a former Olympic Modern Pentathlete he tells us his secret to motivating others. Violinist Nigel Kennedy shares his inheritance tracks and we speak to some of the very patient died-hard fans who've been waiting and waiting for the second royal baby to make an appearance. Inheritance Track choices: 'Hymn to Him' from Apocalypse by the Mahavishnu Orchestra and 'Limehouse Blues' performed by Stephane Grappelli. 'The Skeleton Cupboard' by Professor Tanya Byron is published by Pan. 'Salt Beef Jack and Other Londoners' by Michelle Thomas is currently being crowdfunded by Unbound. 'Written by Candlelight' by Liesbeth Langford is the story of her family's experience of the war. 'Achieve the impossible' by Professor Greg Whyte is published by Bantam Press.
