Words of Healing: Navigating Bad Therapy & the Power of Writing with Michelle Thomas

Writing provides a safe space to delve into our thoughts and emotions, explore our relationships, and reflect on our life stories, dreams, and aspirations. It serves as a powerful tool for making sense of our experiences, allowing us to navigate and overcome trauma while facilitating personal growth and change. Writing therapy, often referred to as journal therapy, is exactly what it sounds like: using writing, typically in a journal, for therapeutic benefits. This approach is low-cost, easily accessible, and incredibly versatile. It can be practiced individually, guided by a mental health professional, or even in a group setting with discussions centered around writing. Additionally, it can serve as a supplement to other forms of therapy. In this episode of The Happier Life Project, host Gabby Sanderson welcomes back bestselling author Michelle Thomas, known for her book 'My S**t Therapist & Other Mental Health Stories'. Together, they delve into the transformative power of writing as a therapeutic tool. What to expect... Michelle talks about her passion for writing about mental health and her commitment to incorporating and amplifying others' stories. She explains how writing has become a vital tool in her self-care toolkit and why it can be a healing resource for everyone, regardless of their writing ability.  During the conversation, Michelle also gives listeners a glimpse into her upcoming book, set to explore the often-overlooked subject of regret, set for release in 2025. While keeping most details under wraps, Michelle hints at how regret plays a significant role in our emotional landscape and can actually serve as a powerful tool for reflection and personal growth.  Gabby and Michelle also discuss the challenges of finding a good therapist and the lessons learned from difficult experiences. Plus, they consider Prince Harry's suggestion to rename 'mental health' as 'mental fitness'—is it just semantics, or could it represent a significant shift?  Through the act of writing, we can discover our unique voices and gain deeper insights into ourselves. Whether journaling, composing poetry, or simply jotting down thoughts, the written word empowers us to confront our challenges and embrace our journeys. In a world that often feels overwhelming, writing can be a transformative practice that nurtures our mental well-being and enhances our understanding of ourselves. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just curious about the healing process of writing, this episode offers valuable insights and inspiration. Grab your favourite notebook or simply settle in for an uplifting conversation.  To download the My Possible Self app: https://mypossibleself.app.link/podcast To follow My Possible Self on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mypossibleself To follow Michelle Thomas on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/msmthomas/ To purchase Michelle's book 'My S**t Therapist': https://amzn.eu/d/gy647BV

In the first of two episodes with best-selling author Michelle Thomas, host Gabby Sanderson explores how small, everyday moments can bring joy, healing, and comfort. From the soothing ambiance of coffee shops to the therapeutic calm of spending time with animals, this episode highlights some subtle yet powerful ways to nurture mental wellness. Michelle Thomas' first book, 'My S**t Therapist and Other Mental Health Stories', is a raw, heart warming, and sharp-witted exploration of life with mental illness. The book topped the Audible charts, surpassing Michelle Obama and J.K. Rowling to claim the number one spot; and to coincide, Michelle also hosted a podcast under the same name, available on all major platforms. Gabby and Michelle discuss the mental benefits of cozy coffee spots, the pure pleasure of getting lost in a good book, and the surprising solace found in spending time with animals, like feeding baby goats! Michelle's candid take on mental health and her personal journey has resonated with many, and in this episode, she shares insights on why these simple acts of self-care can be just as impactful as traditional therapy. Michelle and Gabby also talk about the importance of finding the right job for you and your wellbeing. And share stories how they both walked away from fancy job titles and companies with kudos, to pursue doing what they love and maintaining a healthier work life balance.  In part one with Michelle Thomas, discover the power of small, everyday joys in nurturing mental health, and how they may be the unsung heroes of our healing process. Grab your favorite cup of coffee or tea and settle in for a chat that will leave you rethinking the simple, soothing moments in your life... Welcome to episode 132 with Michelle Thomas who is a writer and the author of My Sh*t Therapist and Other Mental Health Stories. One day Michelle started crying at work and couldn't stop.  She would end up spending the next two weeks in bed and would eventually have to leave her job. As part of her recovery journey, she started medication and started going to therapy and began looking at different parts of her life that had impacted on her mental health and contributed to her being unwell. She wrote about this process and her experience with mental illness and bad therapists in her book and in this episode, I chat to Michelle about her mental health and how a series of life events all arrived at once and caused her mental state to collapse. We also chat about medication, self-care, running and how mental illness isn't always about the extremes but more often about managing in the middle. I enjoyed this conversation so much!  Michelle has some wonderful insights about mental health and we explore her traffic light system, the good and the bad things about therapy and why it's important to include everybody in the mental health conversation. EP 66: Find Your Voice - How to Increase the Power of Your Speech  Have you ever noticed someone self-sabotaging their own speech? Phrases like, “Sorry to bother you,” “This is a little thing,” and “It's probably nothing but…” are all examples of instances that reduce the power of our speech. When we engage in self-defeating speech, we silence our own voices. In large organizations, many working professionals struggle with the feeling of personal uncertainty in communicating…especially women. Because there are no guarantees when we communicate with others, it can be risky. As a result, we may choose to “over qualify” our messages or self-sabotage our words as a way to mitigate the perceived risk.   Listen to our episode about How to Increase the Power of Your Speech! Hear from our guest, Michelle Thomas about communicating in traditionally male dominated contexts. This week, we hear from Michelle Thomas with the Colonnade at Carrollwood, an assisted living community right in my Tamba Bay neighborhood.  For many years, a group from our church visited and sang there monthly for quite a while.  Michelle shares that this is Resort Style Living with as little or as much assistance as is needed.  Some residents move in for the food and social atmosphere, and don't need any assistance at this point - they just don't want to be alone.  Others need various amounts of help to get through their days.  Colonnade's goal is to help their residents live as independently as possible in a loving, caring environment.  Many people who live at the Colonnade still go out into the community for many activities like shopping and gardening.  Find info at

Let us handle the legal stuff so you can focus on your mental and emotional health. Find a therapist, friend circle, spiritual advisor, etc. Hiring the right attorney for you is one of the most important decisions about your divorce. How to hire the right lawyer for your case:Ask for referrals from friends and colleaguesDo initial consultations with at least 2 attorneys. Ask:what percentage of your practice is devoted to family law?are you a trial lawyer or settlement lawyer?do you have time to take my case? Find out how fast you can expect responses/communication from them.Make sure all your questions have been answered clearly by the end of the consultation so you can make an informed decision. How to save money during a divorce:Be cooperative with your lawyer; comply with their requests and needs and organize your records for them so you don't have to pay them to do that. If they have to follow up with you repeatedly, that will add up too. Be mindful of how much you talk to your lawyer. Is this really something you need to speak to your attorney about? Or can you talk to your therapist or vent to a friend? If you are seeking revenge on your spouse, that will cost you. The more contentious your divorce is, the more filings your attorney will have to file. Can't be petty; have to be willing and ready to negotiate.

Do you know what a product ascension ladder is?   Essentially, a product ascension ladder is how you bring someone into your business, get them to know, like and trust you, and buy something from you. As they get wins from you, they move up the product ladder, and eventually, they become loyal fans.   Sounds pretty good, right?   This is what I teach in the Empowered Business Lab, and it is also what I am talking about in this episode with my guest Michelle Thomas!   Michelle joined the Empowered Business Lab and is now building a digital product ascension ladder that helps women keep their weight under control, and she does this all while working full time.   Coach Michelle is a mom of 3, grandma to 1.5 and wife. Do you feel like you have holistic success in all those areas? If you say yes, you're fine, there's nothing that you need to add or subtract, then God bless you and God speed. But most of us, if we're honest, we'll be able to say, financially, I'm OK. I'm doing great. But spiritually, mentally, emotionally, especially emotionally, a lot of times it falls in that emotional track. I'm not where I want to be and how do I get there?"

In this episode, I talk to writer, poet, and author Michelle “Mocha” Thomas. Michelle's story is one of leaving behind everything that was comfortable and known to her to start a new chapter focused on pursuing her dream of writing. But life had other plans for her and before she knew it, she found herself living the same life she left… just in a new city. Michelle is a uniquely positive person and has a refreshing outlook on life. She is a great example of the importance of being honest with ourselves.   Michelle's story focuses on the following key points:   How when we hit rock bottom, we have a choice – play the victim or take ownership of the decisions that led us there… and how taking ownership essentially empowers us to pull ourselves out. How easy it can be to fall back into our comfortable routines vs. going for what we really want – falling into the trap of the “one day I'm going to…” How important it is to have the tough conversations with ourselves and admit to ourselves that we are actually the ones holding us back. How so many of us go with the flow vs. intentionally go after what we want… however we can have different reasons behind that. The importance – and difficulty – of showing up for ourselves… not just for other people.   You can find and follow Michelle here: Mochamichelle.com Her book – Give A Little Gain A Lot Instagram @mocha_chelle   Please SUBSCRIBE, SHARE, RATE, and REVIEW the podcast!   Follow the podcast on Instagram @TheBetterYouPodcast. They had all experienced the same struggles of starting and running a business as me. If only I had the knowledge acquired by these business pioneers when I started my business at the age of 24. I believe that I could have saved myself some of the hardship and mistakes in the first years of business. Over the series, I will be talking to business owners, in all different sectors, to get the low down on how they run their business and their advice. Lousy San Francisco Podcast Season 1 - SKMorton.com

This week we pull back the curtain of the podcast only to reveal dozens of empty yogurt cups and piles of saved copies of USA Today and Highlights for children. The clutter forces the gang out into a larger, amazingly less well lit space within the bomb shelter for our 1st annual season finale lovingly known as Lousypalooza. Joining SK and Squidge at the kid's table are local comic and stand-up contest winner Dave West as well as, friend of the podcast and enemy of dry underarms, Pete Feliciano. First we briefly visit with Throng members Suzy L and PJ before we realize that they both thought they were at Giants Fan Fest and mistook Dave for Santiago Casilla. Next up, former Coco-hosts, Indigo Java and Michelle Thomas step up to the microphone and show us all why the two were never able to make it work. Of course, We also have time to talk with Babette and Squidge but at least we regret it. There were a few songs that Pete is proud of but no one had the heart to tell him that all of his parts were over-dubbed by Jack Black. Look at us world! And we'll make sure to cut and paste our resume in the body of the email!

Amazing and wondrous things were encountered this week as we welcomed back, Throng favorite, Michelle Thomas as the Coco-host and bearer of gifts. To SK she presented a gift of art, To Squidge she served as fodder for a crush, and upon the Throng she conferred the willies as we discovered similarities between her latest series of paintings and a murder conspiracy from the '70s. It was at this curve that our yellow brick road veered away from what might have been an animal obituary and arrived at a plug for SK's long forgotten Amnesty Pond. As ambrosial fragrance filled the bomb shelter blessed voices are found to be uttering something akin to joy as cub reporter, PJ interviews Giants' great, Corey Dullard with our latest installment in the Bridal Fitness Coach saga. Then, with a preamble sweet, The entire gang interviews an ersatz Englishman of letters (And those letters are F.L.A.K.E) who goes by the name of Tony Quarington. The discussion is a charming symphony of San Francisco anecdotes complemented by reminiscences on Tony's home of perfidious Albion. With Babette's arrival as fresh as spring we are greeted by trumpeters clothed in white as shining raiment. The Throng, with harps, sing plenty of praises as emails shine like gold and the promise of interracial dating presumes a future where forests and green slopes and sweet orchards and flashing waterfalls, one above the other, go on for ever. The holidays have begun.

Clinical psychologist and broadcaster Professor Tanya Byron joins Richard Coles and Aasmah Mir to talk tales of the clinic, how a family tragedy sparked her interest in psychology and destigmatising vulnerable people. Becoming unexpectedly jobless in 2012 prompted Michelle Thomas to start paying people to tell her their stories. The response was so amazing she's now crowd-funding a book which will feature some of stories. This week marks 70 years since the end of the second world war in Europe. Listener Liesbeth Langford got in touch to share her family's story of growing up in occupied Netherlands and sheltering a young Jewish woman. Professor Greg Whyte is the man behind David Walliams successful channel swim attempt, Davina McCall's challenge to run, swim and cycle from Edinburgh to London in seven days and the person that inspired Dermot O'Leary to dance for 24 hours non-stop all for Comic Relief. As a former Olympic Modern Pentathlete he tells us his secret to motivating others. Violinist Nigel Kennedy shares his inheritance tracks and we speak to some of the very patient died-hard fans who've been waiting and waiting for the second royal baby to make an appearance. Inheritance Track choices: 'Hymn to Him' from Apocalypse by the Mahavishnu Orchestra and 'Limehouse Blues' performed by Stephane Grappelli. 'The Skeleton Cupboard' by Professor Tanya Byron is published by Pan. 'Salt Beef Jack and Other Londoners' by Michelle Thomas is currently being crowdfunded by Unbound. 'Written by Candlelight' by Liesbeth Langford is the story of her family's experience of the war. 'Achieve the impossible' by Professor Greg Whyte is published by Bantam Press. Produced by: Alex Lewis Edited by: Karen Dalziel.

Ever since the age of 14, rapping has been the tool and the passion for Jerome "Sci-Young" Charity. Born in the Toronto neighbourhood of Rexdale, Ontario to parents Stanley Charity and Michelle Thomas, he grew up in Brampton, Ontario, with his mother, step-father and younger sister and brother. Sci was first given the name Science due to the fact that he wore glasses and used a lot of scientific terminology in his raps. Sci Young began making a name for himself as a local emcee at the age of 16, battle rapping at his high school and engaging in basement cipher's. Music is something that comes very easily for this young rapper but the business is always something he's had to learn and understand. As a former student of the Harris Institute and intern at Koch Entertainment Canada Sci Young has developed the knowledge to succeed within the music industry, while enrolled at Harris he learned the ins and outs of management and how to assist other artist's in development, as part of a school project he formed the management company CIP with two other students. As for Koch this was the hands on experience that allowed Sci to learn what kinds of marketing and promotion labels use to sell records. Sci Young's first body of work, "The Black Leather Prequel" is currently available. His follow up, "Dead Prime Prime Ministers" will be released this summer. During our interview Sci talks and shares about growing up in a challenging neighbourhood and how he overcame it, growing up with parents who were not married, his first musical performance, going to school to learn the business of music and what he learned from that experience and how he has focused on the internet at a young age to make his mark in the music industry. He also talks about how the internet changed the music industry, how his music style has changed, the current state of rap music, why he gives out product for free, details of his current mixtape and details of his next release, "Dead Prime Ministers", some of his favorite artists including The Beatles and country music, what rap music needs to get better and his message to young Black men.
