Cathy will be an instant favorite. She's only been in the trade for a couple years but it wasn't until Ben Cole from GWI in Swindon England encouraged her to get more involved on social media that she's entered into the spotlight. Her instagram account is quickly growing. Cathy has a knack for making interesting content but she's in the trenches getting it done every day. #17 AEM - An Evolving Man Podcast - Ben Cole - Transforming The Wound of Bullying - Tales of Boarding School Trauma & Healing Today I am speaking with Ben Cole on my podcast. This episode was a heart felt and for me a tearful one. Ben is a storyteller, cinematographer and director and he uses this gift to really share a heart-renching and transformational story. Ben shares how he attended boarding school from ages 11-13 in what was a really violent and unsafe environment. He shares how he was bullied and how he started to learn to cope with the bullies - by listening. For some viewers and listeners this episode might be upsetting and triggering. It is not an easy story to hear. Ben goes onto share how he has transformed this wound in the work that he now does with young offenders in the charity A Band of Brothers (ABOB). By him sharing his story with these young men, they learn to trust him. Of those young men that go through ABOB 86% stop offending and turn over a new leaf. This is the power of story. --- I found this episode profoundly moving and touching. Thank you Ben.Some of the areas we covered: - His journey at boarding school and what went on with the bullying - How his parents responded to his pleas to come home. - How hurt people hurt people - How he feels being in service has been so healing for him - The power of the wound - How he has transformed this wound of bullying For more information about his work and A Band of Brothers please visit: https://abandofbrothers.org.uk/ http://bencolecinematographysite.com/ https://middleearthmedicine.com/ - Ben Cole is a film maker, documentary maker, and his filmography includes 1 Giant Leap and The Time of The Sixth Sun. Travel to the Kalahari Desert, in Namibia, where under the shade of a Baobab Tree, eight San elders are gathering to perform their traditional healing dances one last time before they pass on. The San are among the oldest continuously surviving tribes on Earth. They have lived among the plains of Southern Africa as hunter-gatherers for at least the last 20,000 years. And for all those long years, they have been dancing. The San are a dancing culture. For them, movement and music is more than ceremony and celebration. It is the way they connect with, and understand, the world, and the spirit. It is also the way they heal. But without apprentices to pass on their practices, the sacred knowledge of their ancient dances was in danger of being lost forever. The elders asked Ben to come and film them in the hope that one day their great grandchildren would be able to retain this wisdom. Ben has travelled the world. He has filmed the Aboriginees of Australia, the Pygmies of the Congo, and was nominated for a Grammy for his cinematography on the groundbreaking 1 Giant Leap DVD. This, he says, was the adventure of his life. Travel with him now, deep into desert plains of the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, to witness the last dance of the San Bushmen. What he discovers when he gets there is that this ancient knowledge is vital not just for the San, but for us too. Human beings have been dancing and making music since we first set foot on the Savannah. Every religious and spiritual tradition on Earth has some form of movement or music as part of its practice. It is who we are. The message the San have for us is that dancing is not just a frivolous bit of fun. It is a gateway to the spirit and a powerful means to heal our mental and physical ails. Ben went to Namibia for the sake of the San, but what he brought home might just have the power to save us all.Highlights include:Witness one of the most ancient dances in the world, with original audio recorded in the field courtesy of Ben ColeLearn about the San people and their beliefs about the power of dance to heal our mental and physical ailmentsBen is a world-class storyteller, and former actor, and brings to life the culture and landscape of this incredible country ... including a possible origin story of the Cupid myth!Be inspired to get your own dance on, whether that's in a club or just in your own front room. You may never think about dancing in the same way again!Find out more about Ben Cole's documentary work on Facebook: @bencolecinematography Ben, and his wife Caroline, also run Middle Earth Medicine Ways, which uses the power of dance and movement to facilitate a deeper connection with yourself, your spirit and the world around you. Whether we find role models at home, in our schools, hospitals or on the big screen, they have a lasting effect on us all. SGT Kirstie Ennis inspires everyone in her path, ever since finding her own inspiration to help others who can’t help themselves. This dates back to her enlistment in the Marine Corps at age 17, growing up with not one, but two Marine parents.During her second deployment to Afghanistan in June 2012, Kirstie sustained polytraumatic injuries from a helicopter crash including traumatic brain injury, facial and spine injuries, and leg trauma that eventually left her with an amputation above the knee. After being hurt overseas, Kirstie went on to become a Paralympian snowboarder, a proud contestant at Prince Harry’s 2016 Invictus Games, and a member of a Veteran team on a 1000 mile trek across Great Britain with the organization Walking With The Wounded. She continues to push herself every day while giving back to others through mountaineering and world travel. Since 2016, Kirstie set out to climb the Seven Summits (the highest peaks on every continent), having climbed Four of Seven so far. In May 2019 she was just 650 feet from the top of Mount Everest and had to turn back because her team was running out of oxygen, but without any surprise, she plans to return in 2021.Upon taking the stage accepting the 2019 Pat Tilman Award for Service at the ESPYs, Kirstie said… “I am one of the lucky ones who came home. Broken, but I am still here and I still can. So I will continue every day for those who can’t....Let this be my message tonight: Rest a moment less, endure a fraction more and try to make peace with whatever your pain may be.”Thank you Sgt Kirstie Ennis for your inspiration, and HBN wishes you the best as you complete the final three of the Seven Summits...For more information go to The Kirstie Ennis Foundation. We would like to thank our two rehabilitation guests on this episode, Ms Anne Packard and Mr. Ben Cole, and best of luck with your next chapters at home.
