Professor Timothy Noakes shouldn't need much of an introduction! He is an OG in the world of health and fitness. He is a bestselling author of several books. Lore of Running was written in 1986, and is considered to be a bible for the sport! It has been revised several times, and he is working on a new revision as we speak! In total, he has written over 750 scientific books and articles. Yet, in 2014, one of his Tweets about a low-carb diet was targeted, and an intense legal battle ensued. After years in the courtroom, he was exonerated, and he can now speak the truth about human health. We chatted about his book Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports, which is how I originally found his work. We are so grateful for Prof. Noakes and his career, and his willingness to fight for the truth!Find Prof. Tim Noakes at-thenoakesfoundation.org

Professor Noakes started researching the effects of carbohydrates, proteins and fats on humans. After his research convinced him that a high fat low carb diet is the healthiest option for many, Professor Noakes founded the Noakes Foundation in 2012.After being left frustrated by the decline of his own personal health, Professor Noakes has made it his mission to reverse this global trend. The Noakes Foundation is the catalyst for this change. It seeks to reveal what genuine, healthy nutrition looks like, and in doing so makes a difference in the lives of millions of people.Join me as I ask Tim:How did he come to realise that his beliefs about nutrition were all wrong, and what did he do about it?What's his advice for people who need to make a change to their diet? What percentage of the population can reverse their Type 2 Diabetes by adopting this way of life? How can endurance athletes continue doing the sports they love while eating this way?And Tim will share with us:What happened to his health when he adopted this way of life. How the Associated Dieticians of South Africa reacted. The battle he ultimately won to clear his name. The benefits of shaking the sugar addiction.Professor Timothy Noakes is a dear friend of mine. Discussing Cancer and the KETO aka Ketogenic Lifestyle with returning co-host, Dr. Brendan Prendergast: Brendan has returned for his second appearance on our podcast to dig deeper into the topic of Cancer and the KETO aka Ketogenic Lifestyle. He last appeared on episode 173 (https://livethefuel.com/173) where we dug deeper into Primal and Paleo as a big influence on his healthy lifestyle. However, we failed to dig as deep into his truly passionate topic around Cancer and our healthy lifestyle influences. Some quick background on him, he graduated medical school in 2008 and completed his radiation oncology residency training in 2013. He has lived on Florida’s Space Coast since 2013, where he works as a radiation oncologist at a busy cancer center. He has been practicing a primal/paleo lifestyle since 2011 and has become passionate about the connection between diet/lifestyle and health, particularly as it relates to cancer. He and his wife, Rachel, started a blog OurHealthHabit.com (http://ourhealthhabit.com/) to share their perspective and outlook on building healthy lifestyles as a family. Brendan has years of personal experience with different nutritional strategies–from paleo to intermittent fasting and ketosis–and his medical background brings a unique perspective to these concepts. He is enthusiastic about health, longevity, and cancer prevention and believes that the key to achieving these can be found by looking outside the mainstream medical and nutrition resources. When he’s not working or spending time with his family, Brendan enjoys working out and training for OCR races and has qualified for the North American Championships to be held in Vermont this summer. Brendan is an avid reader and consumer of podcasts, although this is his first experience on the other side of the microphone! On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction [spp-timestamp time="15:00"] Fasting, entering into ketosis. South African exercise and sports science professor Timothy Noakes is our guest today in Episode 1289 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore! Imagine if you will growing up with a love for running and later writing what is widely considered as the Bible for runners in your country. You’ve run in marathons and ultramarathons and even delved deeply into the science behind what you believed about endurance exercise. But then you come across the science supporting high-fat, low-carb diets and all of a sudden everything you thought you knew about nutrition was DEAD WRONG! Well, for Professor Timothy Noakes, he doesn’t have to imagine this scenario because this is precisely what happened to him after he read a copy of The New Atkins For A New You! And although he released his 1991 classic Lore Of Running book with multiple editions ever since, Professor Noakes is now recommending people who buy his book to rip out the section he wrote about diet because he no longer believes it is true. WOW! That’s pretty big stuff and the nation of South Africa is taking notice of what this running legend is saying. A full-fledged low-carb, high-fat revolution is underway like what is happening in Sweden right now and the momentum this way of eating is receiving is raising the eyebrows of the nutritional nannies there. Listen in as Jimmy and Professor Noakes talk about this extraordinary turn of events that has taken place in South Africa. “A few years ago, like most doctors, I was pretty ignorant on the topic of food and medicine” is how Peter Brukner, Professor at Latrobe University’s Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre opens this podcast. He summarises 4 years of engaging seriously with nutrition for health and in sport. His comments apply to the general public, the recreational athlete and he shares his experience from elite level sport. Peter has been involved in an international nutrition educational leadership group that includes Professor Timothy Noakes, Dr Aseem Malhotra, Dr Sarah Hallberg, Dr Jason Fung, Nina Teicholz and Gary Taubes. Recent reports that the sugar industry paid two Harvard professors to write a piece for the New England Journal of Medicine https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/12/sugar-industry-harvard-research/ makes the opinion of unbiased academic clinicians like Peter Brukner even more timely. In this 9-minute podcast Zoe Harcombe asks whether dietary guidelines were based on evidence or whether there were other drivers. She summarises what was in the literature at the time the 1977 (US) and 1983 (UK) guidelines were created. Importantly, she highlights that food choices have major implications on the planet. The podcast was recorded in February 2015 – she was a keynote speaker at the Old Mutual 1st International Low Carb High Fat Health Summit 2015 hosted by Prof Tim Noakes & Karen Thomson (Cape Town). https://www.facebook.com/events/880528391966336/ There are plans for a future summit in London in 2016. BJSM senior associate editor Liam West (@Liam_West) led the BJSM team who attended the meeting – including Johann Windt and Ania Tarazi. Consider the classic understanding that high carbohydrate intakes are necessary for optimal endurance performance. What if that failed to take into account the physiological changes that occur with adaptation to low carbohydrate diets? In this podcast, @JohannWindt interviews physician-researcher Dr. Stephen Phinney about his last 30 years of research into low-carb ketogenic diets. Highlights include the previously undocumented levels of during exercise fat oxidation seen in endurance athletes adapted to a low carbohydrate diet. He also touches on ketogenic diets’ potential benefits in other sporting contexts, addresses common criticisms, and looks ahead to future research questions in the field. “There is no essential human need for any carbohydrate” is just one of Professor Timothy Noakes' quotes in this provocative chat. He explains insulin resistance, distinguishes between elite athletes and the general population, and provides examples of athletes who were likely insulin-resistant. He shares practical diet tips. BJSM asks whether diets high in protein and fat increase risk of bowel cancer or heart disease. Tim explains the surprising catalyst for Cape Town hosting the world's first Low Carb High Fat Health Summit (February 19 to 22, 2015). There you can meet Gary Taubes (Good Calories Bad Calories), Nina Teicholz (Big Fat Surprise) and a diverse range of experts who draw similar conclusions about healthy eating. The podcast closes with BJSM challenging Tim about changing his mind – doing ‘U-turns' – how can a Professor think different things on different days?
Dr Peter Brukner has been looking at nutrition for health, both of athletes and in the wider population. In this podcast he speaks to Professor Tim Noakes, author of The Lore of Running, originator of the central governor theory, and a strong exponent of the low carbohyrate-high fat diet.Tim talks about his views on carbohydrate, and how his experience of a very low carb diet has changed the way he views the decades old advice of low-fat intake - particularly when it comes to treatment of patients with type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. They discuss this diet in the specific setting of sport - long distance and football codes. Professor Noakes has over 21,000 followers on Twitter (https://twitter.com/ProfTimNoakes) and his most recent book, Challenging Beliefs, includes an introduction to his thoughts on this topic.Peter Brukner's editorial on this topic is in the July 2013 issue of BJSM - http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/47/11/663.full
