#20 – Sindiso MnisiWeeks and the Case for an Alter-Native Constitutionalism in South Africa

Today, Fabio talks to Sindiso MnisiWeeks.  Sindiso is Associate Professor in Legal Studies and Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Adjunct Associate Professor in Public Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT).  She is currently finishing a monograph titled “Alter-Native Constitutionalism: Common-ing ‘Common' Law, Transforming Property in South Africa”. Sindiso brings a different perspective to debate on the crisis of South African democracy that Fabio had with Dee Smythe, Michelle LeRoux, and Dennis Davis in PALcast's last episode. As listeners may remember, those guests contended state capture is at the center of South Africa's democratic crisis, whose main “victim” is the “transformative” spirit of that country's constitution even more than the abstract scheme of liberal-democratic governance based on separation of powers and the rule of law. Sindiso agrees that "state capture” is there and that it compromises the efficacy of the South African state and its ability to meet its constitutional promises. But she argues that South African constitutionalism has a deeper democratic deficit, which derives from colonialism and the way it deprived natives South African from their own laws. This continues through the current constitution, whose interpretation has been driven by understandings of things like property that are “uncommon” to most in the country. Building on this insight, Sindiso argues that rather than structuring and sustaining democracy from the top down, by putting together and protecting an institutional framework typical of liberal-democracy and constitutionalism, and then socializing the people into those; we should do it from the ground up, by taking seriously “the normative conceptions and convictions of ordinary South Africans”. This is what she calls an “alter-native constitutionalism”.   In the interview, Fabio and Sindiso unpack this notion and discuss how it relates to liberal-democracy and constitutionalism and what would mean, in practice, to take seriously those “normative conceptions and convictions”.  They also discuss how to reconcile her argument with the finding that traditional authority and legality have been historically misused or abused in South Africa. And they finish with a conversation about what she is expecting from the upcoming elections in that country.

Researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) have found that the older persons grant is insufficient for the needs of elderly people living in South Africa. The study, conducted by Family Caregiving, found that almost three-quarters of all persons aged 60 or older in South Africa receive the grant, which was valued at R2,080 per month in 2023. The study reveals that elderly people predominantly use their grants for addressing basic needs such as food, energy, and transportation, rather than specifically catering to their care needs. Ngonyama dismisses UCT governance failure findings as 'attempt to tarnish' her legacy

Former University of Cape Town (UCT) council chairperson Babalwa Ngonyama has launched a scathing attack on the independent panel that probed governance issues at the institution. In a report released on Wednesday, retired Supreme Court of Appeal president Lex Mpati and his panel found that Ngonyama and former UCT vice-chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng committed "serious governance failures" by "mendaciously misleading" the university about the resignation of a colleague. The report contained several key recommendations on governance and specific individuals, among them Ngonyama and former deputy chairperson of the council, Pheladi Gwangwa. The panel recommended that Ngonyama's conduct in failing to perform her fiduciary duty to UCT must be reported to the appropriate regulatory authorities. She is a chartered accountant. On Friday, Ngonyama said in a statement: "I strongly deny the allegations made against me in the report, which is the very reason that I have challenged the basis of the findings in the legal review process. They are one-sided, unverified and untested, leading to the unlawful damage and defamation inflicted upon my dignity, reputation and character, which is profound." In May, the panel released an interim report in which her removal as chairperson was recommended. She took the matter to the High Court, where she also challenged the nature and extent of the panel's powers. She later resigned from her position with immediate effect, citing the impact of the "current circumstances on [her] wellness and health". Ngonyama and the university have been locked in a legal battle in the Western Cape High Court since. According to Ngonyama, she's aggrieved by the manner in which the panel chose to proceed with the process without providing her the opportunity to test the evidence against her, something which "conflicts with the basic tenet of procedural fairness." "As part of the process, I requested that I be furnished with the statements of the individuals beforehand and be afforded an adequate opportunity to address them. I also requested that I be allowed to cross-examine the witnesses as part of testing the allegations against me. I was not afforded that courtesy," she said. Ngonyama said this denied her an opportunity to exercise her rights, prepare for, provide input and reply during the panel's investigation. "Despite repeated offers and requests to participate in the process and that a fair and lawful process be followed. I was ultimately refused an opportunity to participate in the investigation," she added. Ngonyama said the process followed by the panel was "unlawful and infringed her right to dignity and to be heard in a fair, transparent and impartial process." "The panel and council have sought to tarnish my legacy at UCT, but the facts will speak for themselves in due course," she said. Meanwhile, Phakeng said on Thursday evening she and her legal team intended to study the report and that they would take appropriate steps, as deemed necessary, in due course.

Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war. This is the TED talk from Peter Attia that Jonny Bowden refers to. 32:03 - Tim Noakes, an MD and University of Cape Town (UCT) emeritus professor, won the second of two decisive victories against his regulatory body, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The HPCSA's Appeal Committee dismissed its own lawyers' objections and upheld in full its first committee's comprehensive ruling for Noakes in April 2017. That ruling exonerated him completely on all 10 aspects of a charge of unprofessional conduct. The appeal ended the HPCSA's unprecedented, multimillion trial of Noakes that it had dragged out for more than four years. Its ruling reverberates down medical, nutrition science and food- and drug-industry corridors of power globally to this day. It effectively endorsed Noakes's right to freedom of speech as a scientist and the evidence for low-carbohydrate, high-healthy fat (LCHF) therapies. It vindicated his vigorous opposition to South Africa's industry-led, high-carb, low-fat Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs). The FBDGs closely follow the influential US guidelines that launched in the late 1970s and are currently under revision. Welcome to episode 31! In this week's coffee with consultants feature, we break new ground by featuring our first interview with a consultant from the Western Cape! Thanks to the nomination of their intern curator by a number of the Groote Schuur interns, I had the immense privilege and honour of interviewing hepatologist Professor Mark Sonderup at the Liver Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital.  Professor Mark Sonderup is an internal medicine physician and specialist Hepatologist at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH). He has research interests in the treatment of chronic and acute liver diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis and drug-induce liver injuries. We discussed his journey into and through medicine, including his pharmacy degree which he completed prior to entering medicine at UCT, his internship experiences, and what led to him choosing to specialise in internal medicine, with the experience of becoming a registrar at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa, as well as some of the interesting factors around that time such as the HIV-denialism that had wide-reaching implications for patients and the public health system. In the latter half of this episode, we also discussed his role mentoring, monitoring and guiding interns and medical students, and some of the observations he has made from this and what advice he has for junior doctors. If you're someone who has been grappling with indecision, or experienced self-doubt in your journey to becoming and being a doctor, you'll definitely want to stick around for that because it is seriously rich and wise insight and advice to digest and take to heart. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and I'm sure you will as well. Episode 64: Professor. Tim Noakes - Fighting For Fat Professor Tim Noakes is the most prolific scientist and medical doctor in the world on the topics of exercise science and sports nutrition. In this podcast, Prof. Noakes joins me to talk about his research in to the ketogenic diet, the legal challenges he has faced questioning the currently 'accepted' nutrition advice, how he reversed his own type 2 diabetes, the beneficial health effects of eating a high fat diet and why processed and refined carbohydrates are so harmful to health. We also talk about why he decided to become a signatory on the "Settling the Virus Debate" challenge headed up by Dr. Sam and Dr. Mark Bailey, Dr. Tom Cowan, Dr. Andrew Kaufman and others. We discuss some of the issues surrounding germ theory and how he came to realise that there are some serious fundamental flaws in the science relating to virology.  Prof Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. He is now an Adjunct Professor at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) , following his retirement from the Research Unit of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. In 1995 he was a co-founder of the now prestigious Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). For the final 15 years of his academic career he was rated an A1 scientist - the highest possible rating indicating a world-leading scientist - by the South African National Research Foundation. In 2008 he received the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver, from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”. Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 21 000 times in scientific literature and has an H-index of 77. Paballo Chauke and Shannon Morreira examine a drive by the University of Cape Town (UCT) to cultivate a more inclusive academic environment after a campus statue of nineteenth-century imperialist Cecil Rhodes was toppled in April 2015.Chauke, a bioinformatics coordinator and environmental geography PhD student at the South African university, fears that the term ‘decolonization' has lost much of its meaning since the statue fell, and is now at risk of becoming a mere buzzword, used by people to seem open-minded. He says: “I'm worried that people think it's all going to be strawberries and cream, it's going to be peaceful, it's going to be nice, and people want to feel good, people want to feel comfortable.”For Chauke, collaborating with other academics from Africa takes priority over the ‘standard' practice of partnering with people from Europe and North America.UCT anthropologist Shannon Morreira says: “If we think about decolonization in African science, it's not saying throw out the contemporary knowledge systems we have, but it's saying build them up, diversify them, so that other knowledge systems can be brought in as well.”This is the third episode of an eight-part series on science in Africa, presented by Akin Jimoh, chief editor of Nature Africa. He has a PhD in holistic nutrition, and is a Certified Nutrition Specialist from the American College of Nutrition.   He's the Author of about 15 books on Health, longevity and nutrition, including - “The 150th Healthiest Foods on Earth”, “The Great Cholesterol Myth”, “Living low Carb”, “The most effective ways to live longer”, and “Smart fat”, to name a few …   Jonny has appeared on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, and CBS and Dr. Oz's XM Radio and television shows as an expert on nutrition and weight loss, and has written or contributed to articles for dozens of print and online publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Us Weekly, “O” The Oprah Magazine, The Daily Beast, Vanity Fair Online, Time, Oxygen, Marie Claire, Diabetes Focus, GQ, US Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Self, Fitness, Family Circle, Allure, Men's Heath, Prevention, Natural Health, and many other publications. Add to this, Big Pharma has a huge influence on MD's and what information they are exposed to. 31:05 - As a young ER doctor, Peter Attia felt contempt for a patient with diabetes. She was overweight, he thought, and thus responsible for the fact that she needed a foot amputation. But years later, Attia received an unpleasant medical surprise that led him to wonder: is our understanding of diabetes right? Gut microbiota are the microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea, that live in the digestive tracts of vertebrates including humans, and of insects. Alternative terms include gut flora and gut microbiome. The gastrointestinal metagenome is the aggregate of all the genomes of gut microbiota. Jonny explains in simple terms how we can try and optimize our gut microbiome. 1:08:15 - Fixing the gut involves many different things and is a multi-factorial approach and most doctors don't address it. In 1975, biologist Paul Ehrlich said that 90% of tropical rainforests would be lost by about 2005. Although their loss has continued at a steady rate, by 2019 the figure was more like 32%. Also in the 1970s, ecologist Kenneth Watt forecast a world 11 degrees colder in the year 2000. Of course, it's been well publicized that the trend is in the opposite direction, and at a less severe pace. At a more modest scale, botanist John Acocks predicted in the 1950s that South Africa's Karoo (a desert-like area the size of present-day Germany) would expand into neighboring ecosystems, amounting to the desertification of millions of hectares of the country. As you'll hear in today's discussion, the Karoo in fact appears to have decreased in size. There are plenty of other examples of predictions of environmental change proving to be completely wrong. Perhaps those making the predictions didn't spend enough time looking into the past in order to forecast the future; and perhaps they didn't consult a diverse enough pool of expertise to inform their predictions.Timm Hoffman is a professor of plant conservation at the University of Cape Town (UCT) who, for decades, has used a variety of techniques to understand changes in biodiversity and landscapes. I have long admired Timm for the humility with which he approaches this subject. We talk about the methods he uses, especially repeat photography, and about the role of community engagement. And Timm argues that an interdisciplinary approach to ecology and conservation is likely to give us the best idea of what is going on. Calland explains why the core requirements of rationality and favourable analysis of competing rights that are at stake will ultimately fall on the side of mandatory vaccinations. The efficacy of vaccines and absence of less restrictive means of dealing effectively with Covid-19 are legal premises, based on scientific evidence, that could persuade the bench. The discussion then segues into political analysis, with a focus on President Cyril Ramaphosa's leadership. McKaiser and Calland are of the view, and offer arguments in support thereof, that Ramaphosa is no crisis president. His style and approach to problem-solving is admirably collaborative, but this is not appropriate within the context of a deep crisis that requires decisive thought leadership and action rather than agnosticism. Calland urges the president to ignore the noise of anti-vaccine campaigners and focus on sound science as the basis of rational policy formation.

Enjoy another one of my most popular podcast chats from The Health Evolution Podcast! "It is completely unethical for any medical doctor or any dietitian to tell a patient to eat less saturated fat."  There is a big message in this for you if you are a medical doctor, Dietitian or anyone advising people on what to eat. And this is not just a blanket statement. Prof Noakes goes through why this is the case.  I was super nervous before chatting to Prof Noakes. Afterall, how often do you get the chance to talk to and thank your hero? But instantly his kindness put me at ease, and we spent almost an hour together talking about this mans legacy. He shared where he is now after the horrendous 4 years of being bullied, tormented, then put on trial. You will be appalled at the way he was treated, and if it wasn't for his wife.. well you listen for yourself. Thankfully he was exonerated, and so was the low carb diet. If there is one of my podcasts that is a must listen, this is the one. Prof Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. He is now an Emeritus Professor at UCT, following his retirement from the Research Unit of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. In 1995 he was a co-founder of the now prestigious Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). He has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of SA (NRF) for a third 5-year term. In 2008 he received the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver, from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”. Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19 000 times in scientific literature and has an H-index of 71. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards. He has authored many books. In 2003 he received the UCT Book Award for Lore of Running (4th Edition), considered to be the “bible” for runners. Since 2011 he has written his autobiography, Challenging Beliefs: Memoirs of a Career, published Waterlogged: The serious problem of overhydration in endurance sports (in 2012), published The Real Meal Revolution (in 2013), co-authored with Jonno Proudfoot, David Grier and Sally-Ann Creed, and following that the child-focused version of this book, Raising Superheroes (in 2015). The latter two are now also published overseas. In 2014 he co-wrote Always Believe in Magic, with Kevin Musikanth and Jonathan Kaplan, which is the story of the UCT Ikey Tigers journey to winning the 2014 Varsity Cup. The Banting Pocket Guide was published in 2017, co-authored with Bernadine Douglas and Bridgette Allan and most recently he has co-authored Lore of Nutrition with Marika Sboros. This details his journey from prosecution to innocence. Following the publication of the best-selling book, The Real Meal Revolution, he founded The Noakes Foundation, the focus of which is to raise funding to support high quality research of the eating plan described in the book. He now devotes a majority of his time to promoting the low carbohydrate high fat diet, especially for those with insulin resistance, and on raising funds for Eat Better South Africa! and research through The Noakes Foundation. He is also the Chief Medical Director of the Nutrition Network, an education, connection and learning platform founded by The Noakes Foundation in partnership with an esteemed team of doctors and scientists. He is highly acclaimed in his field and, at age 70, is still physically active, taking part in races up to 21kms. The Noakes Foundation The Noakes Foundation is a Public Benefit Organization founded for public benefit which aims to advance medical science's understanding of the benefits of a low-carbohydrate healthy high fat (LCHF) diet by providing evidence-based information on optimum nutrition. The Foundation's key goal is to change the way South Africa eats because the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes are set to cripple national healthcare within the next 10 years. The Foundation purely relies on funding to carry out this mandate, visit our website to find out how you can help: www.thenoakesfoundation.org/donate Eat Better South Africa! The Noakes Foundation soon realised that the poorest communities around South Africa, whose diets mainly consist of maize and maize products, are unaware of the dangers of excessive sugar and carbohydrate consumption. This has resulted in an unprecedented increase in cases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Thus the Noakes Foundation team established Eat Better South Africa! (EBSA) - the community outreach branch of The Foundation. EBSA's goal is to educate under resourced communities about good nutrition and to provide them with the knowledge and the tools to make healthy and affordable food choices. Rhodes University students may be required to have themselves vaccinated against Covid-19 before returning to in-person classes after the university council approved a senate recommendation for mandatory vaccinations. The rule will require evidence of Covid-19 vaccination by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) as a condition for access to the campus in 2022. "Based on an analysis of the law and information drawn from the higher education sector, it was submitted that having assessed risks, Rhodes University has a responsibility to ensure that employees and students are protected and that all the necessary precautionary measures are in place," the council said in a statement. The special meeting of the council was convened as the university prepared for the full return of students and staff in 2022. The vaccination requirement also applies as a registration condition for all students as well as staff, service providers and visitors. "A recommendation for an exemption application process and an alternative health status process for those who cannot take the vaccine on medical or other legitimate and justifiable grounds was also approved. The university is considering the team who will evaluate all applications for exemption," the statement read. "Where such applications are successful, the university will consider steps to mitigate risk, including the requirement to produce a negative Covid-19 test result on a weekly basis. This would be at the cost of the student, staff member, visitor or service provider concerned in specific circumstances," the statement read. Besides the requirement for digital vaccination certificates or vaccination cards upon entering campus, workers will be allowed to take paid time off to get vaccinated. Sick leave will also be permitted if someone experiences side effects associated with the vaccine, the statement indicated. Rhodes announced the move shortly after the University of Cape Town (UCT) council approved in principle a proposal to make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for campus access. It requires that all staff and students provide acceptable proof of vaccination against Covid-19. The UCT council sat over the weekend to deliberate the move after weeks of engagements with staff and students.

The Department of Health finally heard the outcry and will start vaccinating over weekends from August along with the rollout to people between 35 and 49 years old, with registrations starting on the 15th of July. One has to question why we are waiting till August though. One of the primary findings of the most recent and concluding wave 5 of the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) - Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey (CRAM) study is that the lack of weekend vaccinations is the binding constraint to the South African vaccination programme is that the lack of weekend jabs has resulted in as many as 1.3 million missed vaccination opportunities. The main reason for this has been a lack of funding to pay healthcare workers to put in the extra hours. And its so important because the levels of poverty and grinding inequality accelerated by the pandemic have created the perfect conditions for the sort of tinderbox that Zuma and his fellows are exploiting with the looting we are witnessing in KzN and Gauteng. Michael Avery talks to Nic Spaull, an economist at Stellenbosch University and the co-principal investigator of the Nids-Cram study; Mpumi Mohohlwane, Deputy Director: Research, Monitoring & Evaluation. Iraj Abedian argues that there is a mismatch between humanity's secular evolutionary progress and the spiritual nature of mankind. This mismatch leads to a growing dysfunctionality of the global socio-economic and political order. The systemic fault lines compound over time, generating successive crises and ultimately disorder. To restore order there is need for a revolutionary impulse as proclaimed by Baha'u'llah. Humanity's current experience is testimony to this titanic clash of the secular evolutionary dynamics and Baha'u'llah's revolutionary agency. Iraj Abedian is the founder and Executive Chairman of Pan-African Capital Holdings (Pty) Ltd. He was professor of economics at the University of Cape Town, before entering the business sector in 2000 as the chief economist of Standard Bank Group of SA. Since its inception in February, the University Technology Fund (UTF) has approved six investments. Technology and innovation incubated in South Africa’s universities is, as a result, edging closer to commercialisation, creating significant economic, investment and job creation opportunities. This also serves to elevate South Africa’s homegrown technological innovation on a global scale and prevent local skills from leaving South Africa’s shores in search of better opportunities elsewhere. The UTF is a product of the SA SME Fund, with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Stellenbosch University (SU) the first two universities to participate in the initiative. UCT and SU have been provided with university spin-off companies and access to an initial R50-million, as well as additional seed funding to support innovation projects within these universities. However, since February, the UTF has raised R230-million and, thus far, has invested in five companies that have developed technology for use in the biosciences/biotech, health and medical diagnostics and energy industries. Thus far, the UTF has invested in healthcare sensing solutions company BioCODE (SU), autophagy sensor technology company Phagoflux (SU), biopharming company Cape Bio Pharms (UCT), hydrogen power solutions company Hydrogen Energy Applications (UCT) and pathology software developer Hyrax Biosciences (UCT). The UTF has also recently signed a term sheet to conclude an investment in Stellenbosch Nanofiber Company (SU). Funds invested in these opportunities will be allocated to pre-commercialisation funding, which includes proof-of-concept and technology development support, as well as for commercialisation and growth. UTF partner Wayne Stocks says the growth and scale of university technology funds globally is testament to the success of these funds as an investment asset class. “Likewise, South Africa has the opportunity to commercialise its university-developed intellectual property (IP) and technology for the benefit of the country.” He points out that while South Africa’s industrial catalyst – the mining industry – has been slow and largely unsuccessful in its beneficiation of the country’s gold, diamonds and other valuable minerals, the country has a unique opportunity to beneficiate a further valuable commodity – its university IP and technology. “The UTF intends to do just this for the benefit of the country and the economy.” UTF chairperson Tom Hockaday says South Africa has a wealth of untapped university IP and technology innovation that is “ripe” for commercialisation. “Our own experience in the UK shows us that this is an achievable objective that can have a hugely positive impact on the economy.” He says the fund will set South Africa on a trajectory to improve the economy and create jobs, and enable the country to develop products and services to better serve society, and improve people’s lives. Hockaday oversaw the expansion of Oxford University Innovation into one of the world’s significant university technology commercialisation organisations. He also published his book – University Technology Transfer: What It Is and How to Do It – in April. Meanwhile, Stocks points out that, since the UTF’s launch, it has become clear from the high quality and greater numbers of potential companies and technologies that the UTF has identified across South Africa’s 26 universities, that more funds are required to unlock the potential of these businesses. “Consequently, UTF is seeking additional funding from both local and international investors.” SA SME Fund CEO Ketso Gordhan says the SA SME Fund saw the need for South Africa and the African continent’s first university tech fund. “The UTF is an excellent example of what is possible when the public and private sector partner for the betterment of South Africa. ” UTF’s investors include the SA SME Fund, the Technology Innovation Agency, the Small Enterprise Funding Agency,...

Power auctions are fast becoming the dominant procurement method for renewable energy globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, but it is not without its crucial requirements for success. University of Cape Town (UCT) specialist research unit Power Futures Lab research fellow Wikus Kruger on the first day of the annual Windaba conference hosted virtually on October 26 discussed global trends in renewable energy auctions and what this means for South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). Contextualising the discussion, renewable energy developer Windlab Developments South Africa project manager Ben Brimble explained that the REIPPPP was initiated by government in 2011 as a premier procurement programme to address climate and energy security issues by diversifying South Africa’s energy mix and reducing the country's reliance on coal-fired power. Subsequently, the first bidders were announced in December of that year, followed by successful bidding rounds two, three and four. In 2015, however, the world-class and lauded reverse auction process that is the REIPPPP experienced delays owing to political issues at play at State-owned power utility Eskom, which faces crippling debt. Kruger went on to cite his unit’s research on energy auctions in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, India and to some extent in the European Union, which found that contributing factors in successful independent power producer (IPP) procurement include stable country contexts, clear and consistent policy and regulation, as well as coherent power sector planning, including for competitive procurement. Additionally, at the project level, it is necessary that developers are experts in their field, have affordable debt and secure revenue streams. Both project-level and country-level factors influence who implements an auction, what the implementation process is like and whether the programme is adequately resourced, he said. Looking across the regions in Power Futures Lab’s research, Kruger reported that they see increased sophistication during auctions globally, with complex evaluation methodologies being used and more online platforms hosting bids. Although an increase in complexity has resulted in low price bids being achieved, there is uncertainty over whether these projects are real and feasible. Secondly, Kruger said auctions are becoming more customised to looking at system integration. He explained that bidders are differentiating between capacity and energy and are running separate bids for these products, which is not seen in South Africa yet, but Kruger believes it is necessary for the system operator to procure the products that it needs and to do so cost-effectively. Looking at project locations, Kruger was seeing bids being evaluated based on their impacts on the grid, for example. “Project location is no longer merely being a matter of choosing the most-endowed site for resources, but we see site selection being influenced by sociopolitical reasons.” For example, Kruger highlighted that Argentina requires an equitable location of bids across provinces. He suggested that South Africa should also start looking at this if it is going to consider a just transition away from coal, with the majority of coal mining and coal power generation operations based in Mpumalanga, which currently does not have much renewable energy activity going on as a replacement employer. Kruger mentioned that an increasing trend globally was around more sophisticated and customised approaches to local content, where auctioneers are looking at what components can be manufactured locally. He said local content not only involves manufacturing, but extends into the services sector, with South Africa having managed to create a renewable energy services sector as a result of the REIPPPP and subsequently extending its services to many countries over the world. Kruger added that there are alternat...

As a Masters candidate in civil engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT) he is passionate about greening the economy, and the ground-breaking project he is currently involved with seeks to develop more eco-friendly building materials, such as bricks. What makes these ‘bio-bricks’ unique is that they are created from human urine. When not working in the lab, Mukhari drives a plastic pollution awareness campaign and is building smart technology that promises to revolutionise the health and fitness space.I thoroughly enjoyed my change with this bright inspiring young man and I am sure you will too.

The Foundation purely relies on funding to carry out this mandate, visit our website to find out how you can help: www.thenoakesfoundation.org/donate Eat Better South Africa! In recent years, online and blended learning has been put to use frequently during periods when teaching face to face is impossible. eLearning has been used to maintain instruction during hurricanes, heavy snows, floods, and fires. Educators have even continued to teach with online and blended learning during violent conflicts when traveling to schools becomes no longer safe. Communities often rally behind these efforts and view it as a best-case-scenario with all things considered. But that is not always the case. In a recently published article, researchers interview professors from the University of Cape Town (UCT) who were abruptly forced to take their courses online when protesters shut down campus. Though placed in a highly unique situation, their insights carry relevance for other online and blended learning responses to crises and the pedagogy more generally. Nyasha just had a huge win at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival! Her Virtual Reality film ‘Le Lac' won the "Best Digital Narrative Award" at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in England. The film, which Nyasha spent almost two years working on, tells the story of how Lake Chad had shrunk to a tenth of its former size, and the impact on the communities that depend on the lake.  Nyasha took the bold and unusual step of giving the lake a poetic voice to tell the story. "Be open to the unexpected." - Nyasha Kadandara In between our giggles (it's always so strange interviewing a friend and fellow journalist!), Nyasha talked about her passion for storytelling, and how that led her to leave a career in the corporate world to pursue journalism and filmmaking. You see, Nyasha actually studied for a business degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT), with the intention of becoming an Actuary! She volunteered on the university's student newspaper, where much to her disappointment, her first article didn't get published.  But that only inspired and challenged her to become a better writer. By the time Nyasha was in her senior year, she had been promoted to editor-in-chief. After graduating, Nyasha got a job at a local IT consulting firm...but she wasn't happy.  She realized that what she really loved was storytelling. Nyasha finally decided to take a chance and go after her dream of becoming a journalist and filmmaker.  She applied, and was accepted into the prestigious Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. Since graduating, Nyasha has produced several award-winning documentaries including  'Through the Fire', 'Queens and Knights' and most recently 'Le Lac.' Another recent documentary ‘Sex & The Sugar Daddy', which was an intriguing yet controversial look at the 'Sugar Daddy' or 'Sponsor' culture that is widespread in Kenya, was published by BBC. Listen in as Nyasha shares her inspiring story, and she shares her thoughts on the impact she wants her work to have in the world.

Our conversation with Cape Town based hip hop and spoken word artist Nazlee Saif centers on discussions of race, gender, religion, sexuality, and activism. This conversation centers on the use of hip hop as a cultural space within which to engage several different social issues, and to deconstruct social taboos that continue to exist within hip hop culture. Nazlee Saif is a spoken word and hip hop artist originally from Durban, who moved to Cape Town and attended the University of Cape Town (UCT) during the height of the #RhodesMustFall movement. Nazlee, who was already a socially conscious artist, was an activist and organizer in the movement on the UCT campus. Nazlee, as a queer identified, Muslim, MC, also brings those intersecting identities into the hip hop, a culture that has historically been very patriarchal, very misogynistic, and hostile to queer voices. In the conversation Nazlee Saif talks about several topic, including the #RhodesMustFall movement at UCT, intersectionality, being Black & Coloured, queer identities, being a Muslim & queer MC, Steve Biko and Black consciousness, the term “Hoteps”, and feminism. Nazlee Saif's presence in hip hop challenges hip hop's masculine, heteronormative culture. Nazlee Saif expresses strong stances on topics of race, sexuality, and religion. The artist's discussion of a level of frustration with Black Consciousness, as well as the term "Hoteps", may put Nazlee Saif at odds with some Pan Africanists. This week welcome to the show Tim Noakes.  Prof Noakes was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1949. As a youngster, he had a keen interest in sport and attended Diocesan College in Cape Town. Following this, he studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and obtained an MBChB degree in 1974, an MD in 1981 and a DSc (Med) in Exercise Science in 2002. In the early 90s, Noakes teamed up with Morné du Plessis to drive the founding of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). The Institute was built to provide a facility that would primarily fund research in sports performance. The application of this research would provide sports personnel of all disciplines with the means to improve. Noakes and du Plessis also wanted to use it as a platform to build public interest in the country’s top sports people and build state pride. Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 16 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index of 71 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second 5-year term. Can you tell us about the ‘Ocean View Project” and the results you have seen so far. What results have you seen in reversing diabetes? You’ve written a book called ‘Waterlogged’. Now, if you're unfamiliar with Tim's work, he has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He's been cited more than 16,000 times in scientific literature. He has a H-index of 71 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second five year term. Amazing. He has won numerous awards over the years, and made himself available for many editorial boards, and of course, has a very famous book. The Law of Running is considered the bible of the running sport itself. It was just a privilege to get Tim back on the show today and pick his brains on what he's been up to over the last few years. [00:01:30] Now, if you're unfamiliar with Tim more recently ... Well, I say more recently, a few year ago, which we get into today, he kind of flipped his way of thinking around fueling for sport where he had been for 33 years promoting the low-fat, the carb loading, endurance sport diet for athletes. Then had a complete turn around and came out with that, which is a huge deal. We get into that today, and over the five years since, I think, this has happened what he's been up to and his fights against type II diabetes as well in South Africa. We get into sports recovery, sports hydration from his famous book, Water Logged, as well. [00:02:00] It's all in there and you are going to love it. If you do love the show guys, just share it with people that you think are going to benefit from this kind of information because we're getting more and more people listening to our podcast. We're getting more and more emails and from people that are just having these epiphanies around their health, and it's definitely helping everyone, including ourselves as well. Help spread the love, share the word, and get this information out there with people, because it does change people's lives. Anyway guys, let's go over to Tim. Hit me up on Instagram stories if you enjoy the episode. Oh, I've also started my own little Instagram channel as well, which is Guy H. Lawrence, which you can follow me on there as well, outside of 180 Nutrition. Awesome guys. Let's go over to Tim Noakes. Enjoy. Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cooke as always. Hello Stu. Stu Hello, mate. Guy Our fantastic guest today is Mr. Tim Noakes. Tim, welcome back to the podcast. Tim Thanks very much Guy, lovely to be back with you. Guy It's phenomenal, mate. I can't believe it's been over three years since you last come on, and I have no doubt a lot has happened since then that we can get into today. Tim Yeah. Guy Tim, there's a question that we ask everyone on the show at the moment and that is, if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Tim At present I'm retired, so I do what I want to do. Essentially, I'm finishing up a five-year trial against me on the basis that I gave information on Twitter, which was considered unconventional. What we did was, we put the low-fat diet on trial. We said, "Okay, if you're going to try me for this nonsense, let's see whether there's any evidence that the low-fat diet is healthy." So we put it on trial, and the trial ended on April the 21st and I won 10-0. Full Transcript & Video Version: http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/tim-noakes-interview/
