Maintaining a healthy diet is a challenge for most of us. One of the key reasons behind it is the lack of knowledge when it comes to what we need to consume and in what proportion. In this podcast, Professor Timothy Noakes weighs in on the importance of macro as well as micronutrients, the role of carbohydrates and fats, the difference between a diet for good health and a diet for performance as well as the importance of a good carb loading plan before an endurance event. If you are looking to learn a bit more about the different elements of a good diet, this is the conversation for you.Prof Noakes is the author or co‐author of more than 250 scientific publications and is on the editorial boards of eight international scientific publications. Do you work in the healthcare space? Are you looking to expand your skills? In this week's podcast episode, I sat down with Candice Egnos, Project Director of the Nutrition Network - an offshoot of the Noakes Foundation - to explore their incredible mission of training and certifying medical professionals in the safe and effective use of low-carb and ketogenic dietary interventions to treat metabolic and mental health conditions. With over 10,000 practitioners trained across 100+ countries, they are leaders in this educational space. The timing of this podcast interview works amazingly well because it falls over their Black Friday sale which offers up to 75% off their certification courses. These courses are ideal for health coaches, nurses, nutritionists, dieticians, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc. While the Nutrition Network recognizes that low-carb and ketogenic dietary interventions are just one of many strategies to support health outcomes, they strongly advocate for medical professionals to understand the science behind these approaches and acquire the skills to apply them when appropriate. It is becoming a critical core competency patients seek from their healthcare providers.Episode Highlights:The vision behind Nutrition Network and its roots in the Noakes Foundation. Why therapeutic carbohydrate reduction is a game-changing tool for treating metabolic disorders.Courses tailored for everyone—from health coaches to dietitians to medical doctors.Insights into their globally recognized certifications, including a rigorous 16-week live mentorship program. The importance of personalized approaches to nutrition—no dogma, just results.Free resources, curated research, and a vibrant practitioner community.Whether you're a medical professional, on the path of recovery from metabolic syndrome, or simply curious about TCR (Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction), this episode is packed with valuable insights and actionable steps.Enjoyed this episode? The Plant Free MD Series | Episode 39 | Sean ‘Sako' Sakinofsky In this episode Dr. Chaffee and Simon chat with Sean ‘Sako' Sakinofsky who is a keto/carnivore elite endurance cyclist who rides for hundreds of kilometers without refueling. At 50 years old he is at the top of his game and pushing the boundaries of what mainstream science and endurance experts think is possible. In 2006, Sean founded a supplement company which advocated the usage of carbohydrates… In 2013, after losing his father to Esophageal cancer, Sean started to “look out of the box” and see a correlation between the high carb, low fat diet and lifestyle diseases such as cancer and cardiac problems which plagued both sides of his family and most of the developed world. Going keto (and often strict carnivore), Sean stopped stuffing his pockets full of carbohydrate gels and kept riding his bike. His lifelong struggle with his bowel movements were resolved and his overall health improved. He has gone on to achieve incredible feats of endurance on his bike and is recording all his data proving that the mainstream dogma that you need carbohydrates for endurance is BS.  Sean is a deep thinker. He takes his time with his responses, but they are worth listening to. Sit back and learn from someone putting their body on the line in an effort to improve global human nutrition. Simon is a nutrition researcher and founder of McKenzie's Meats that specialises in improving your health by delivering grass fed meat to your door specifically. "Seeing nutrition issues running rampant and now more than ever men, women and their kids are struggling with issues like low energy, chronic fatigue or if they do have energy they have to constantly snack or drink coffee to make it through the day… Then there are other issues like being overweight and struggling to keep it off, poor gut health leading to issues like IBS and Crohn's disease, Autoimmune issues, diabetes, poor sleep, chronic inflammation & mental health issues like anxiety and depression are now more common than ever before. The crazy thing is even though all these issues seem so different and diverse they all stem back to poor nutrition as the root cause of the issue, this has now been proven through research into: Nutrition and brain function Nutrition and body composition Nutrition and mental health Nutrition and hormone health Insulin sensitivity & diabetes. You see, by understanding the the importance of proper nutrition it allows us to have the ability to treat the cause of the problem rather than just looking for a bandaid solution that is slapped over the symptom… This is why I created McKenzie's Meats because I wanted to stop people from just treating symptoms and actually get to the root cause of their issues. I was sick of seeing bandaids get put over these issues thinking everything is going to be okay when I knew people were just going to end up back in the same position. I was sick of seeing people following mainstream nutritional advice or visiting doctors prescribing medications that were only ever giving them temporary results and more side effects that lead to other health issues further down the track. I was sick of people getting sold the “magic” pill or supplement when deep down I knew there was no such thing as what most doctors and pharmaceutical companies try to tell you. This is why I created McKenzie's Meats and developed our system for ‘nutrient-dense eating' with specifically chosen products that heal your body and mind by getting to the root cause of the issues, because we know there isn't a magic pill or medication that cures everything. It takes more than just adding a supplement to your daily routine to improve your nutrition, that's why we have specifically chosen to stock products that are nutrient-dense and don't contain anything harmful so you can actually get the results you want whilst taking out the guesswork so you can focus on feeling better without being lost or confused about what to do, or feeling helpless ever again wondering why you can never get on top of your frustrating health problems. So if you're ready to improve your nutrition for good, get your first box of McKenzie's Meats today." About 20 years ago, after the birth of her youngest daughter, Nurse Kate O'Connor began to gain weight on her small 5'2” frame and noticed that if she ate any carbohydrates during the day it would make her especially sleepy.  Diet-induced sleepiness was a difficult challenge for a full-time working mother of three! This caused Kate to restrict her carbs and as the extra weight disappeared, she also noticed that she had much more energy.  Kate maintained that weight loss and felt better for quite some time, but gradually, as her children left the house and she was able to have a slightly more relaxed lifestyle she moved towards eating more carbohydrates again.Fast forward to a few years ago Nurse Kate was 52 years old, Peri-menopausal with hot flashes, having difficulty sleeping, and taking two different medications for Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as another for high blood pressure. Kate happened upon the podcast Keto Talk with Jimmy Moore and Dr. Adam Nally.  She binge-listened to all of those episodes because the science made sense to her and she was eager to change and to learn.  A light-bulb went on for Kate from that period, and she gradually started to change and adapt to the keto lifestyle. Rather quickly Kate lost the weight she had gained, started having better sleep and best of all experienced far less brain fog and found she had her energy back for the first time in years.Today Kate  takes less than half the thyroid medication that she did three years ago and has not had a hot flash since she became fat-adapted. Her quality of life is much higher.Always a lover of science Kate completed a BS in Biology from Worcester State University.  Kate's study in biology lead to an appreciation of physiology and the amazing abilities of the human body, which resulted in her pursuit and completion of a Nursing degree. Kate spent about 10 years working in the float pool of UMass Medical Center, which means that she worked on every floor of a bustling hospital, enabling her to learn constantly about the many different aspects of patient care. Kate spent another 5 years working in urgent care at UMass, where she was again in a position to see a broad spectrum of health concerns and treatment. This experience led Kate to the conclusion that Hippocrates' words still ring true, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.In 2018 Kate completed the NASM and AFAA approved Keto Coaching certification course and became a Certified Keto Coach. In early 2019 Nurse Kate completed the Nutrition Network LCHF (low carb high fat) Certification Program offered by the Noakes Foundation. This online training was the first of its kind and is presented by national and international medical and allied healthcare experts in their field, on a range of topics related to LCHF nutrition and its implementation into clinical practice.Today Kate O'Connor continues to research and learn more about the benefits of the ketogenic lifestyle. To follow Nurse Kate O'Connor, and explore Kate's coaching programs and services, check out the links below:https://ketowithkateo.comFacebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/ketowithkateoFacebook Wall: https://www.facebook.com/kate.oconnor.3954Instagram: @KetoWithKateOBooks Mentioned on the episode:The Secret Life of Fat by: Sylvia Tara: https://amzn.to/3iXDYfkNutrition and Physical Degeneration by: Weston A.
