And that understanding is about to come into focus for us today, thanks to today's guest, best-selling author and one of my favorite writers, Dr. Alex Hutchinson. Alex is well known, both for his popular Outside Magazine columns on the topic of sweat science, and his exceptional book Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance. His book influenced the direction I took with my own PhD work. He first joined us waaaay back in 2019 – one of our first 20 episodes ever recorded – which now number over 350. He brings a fascinating background as an elite runner, a PhD in Physics and is basically who I want to be when I grow up – except he's a decade younger than me.You're going to love this discussion. SO many insights covering our draw toward exploration and what it means for high performance and life. I got a chance to read an early release of his new book: The Explorer's Gene – and it is outstanding. I've underlined and scribbled all over it, which is a good sign. Delayed Gratification: Maybe It's NOT the Secret to Success (Jacqueline Rifkin, PhD)

Send us a Text Message.Delayed gratification. When it comes to health, wellness and high performance, it's the holy grail, right? Well, not so fast.      Back in 1970, psychologist and Stanford professor Walter Mischel (‘mishel”) performed the marshmallow study. It purported to show that children who were able to delay gratification by choosing not to eat a marshmallow when left alone in a room in order to earn 2 marshmallows went on to garner greater success across a range of areas, including school and careers. It's been a cornerstone concept for speakers, coaches and consultants for decades. But can it go too far? Today's guest, Dr. Jacqueline Rifkin has spent her career answering that question, studying how we manage our resources, including time, money and even experiences. Her findings – which she recently shared in a fascinating Wall Street Journal article – may not exactly align with what you've been taught. Maybe there is a time and a place to eat that marshmallow afterall. We'll talk about the other side of delayed gratification, the specialness spiral and more, and I think you'll be surprised, and perhaps encouraged, by what she has to share. Dr. Rifkin has her PhD in Marketing from Duke University and has done extensive work in both marketing and consumer research market. She is an assistant professor of marketing at Cornell University, teaching consumer behavior at both the undergrad and graduate levels.Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Send us a Text Message.David Goggins is an incredibly fascinating individual, with a life story that reads like the script from a Rocky film. The retired Navy Seal, best-selling author and YouTube no-nonsense motivator endured an abusive childhood and a learning disability early on. At age 19 he spent 4 years in the Air Force but struggled after being discharged, as his weight ballooned from 175 to 290 and he felt he was in a dead-end job. At 24, he lost 100+ lbs, became a Navy Seal and later also graduated from Army Ranger School. As an endurance athlete, he's completed over 60 ultra-marathons, triathlons and ultra-triathlons, at one time held the world record for pull-ups in 24 hours with 4,030, is the author of 2 best-selling books and has millions of followers on social media. He's spent the past 2 decades carrying the torch of no-nonsense, “stay hard” advice for countless millions through his books and social media outlets. If high intensity is your thing, you're likely a Goggins fan. I've been intrigued by him for years, as we've raced many similar events and my PhD focused on the subject to which Goggins is most closely associated: mental toughness. In this special episode of the Catalyst 360 podcast, we'll be taking a closer look at the strategies Goggins admonishes, how the science supports and occasionally conflicts with his guidance, and what it might mean for you in your own life moving forward.      It wasn't all that long ago – 2016 – when you and I could sit down over a cup of coffee, decided becoming a health & wellness coach sounded like a cool idea, and then walk out of the coffee shop calling ourselves exactly that. Or, organizations posing as “wellness coaching companies” could hire nice people, give them a script about eating kale and exercising 3x/week and market it as such. Those days have changed, as the National Board of Health & Wellness Coaching, or NBHWC now oversees a comprehensive certification process, including a national board exam proctored by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the same organization that oversees the licensure process for physicians. Yes – there are obviously still plenty of “influencers” out there posting cool videos and making unsubstantiated claims, along with folks selling supplements but calling themselves “coaches” to try to garner credibility. But the gig is up. A real health & wellness coach is someone who's gone through the rigorous process of becoming board certified. And today – we are thrilled to welcome back to the show the Executive Director of the NBHWC, our only 4x guest we've ever had on the Catalyst 360 podcast, Leigh-Ann Webster!Looking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life? Ice baths, 4 AM wake-up calls, fasts and more are garnering big-time attention on social media and elsewhere as paths to mental toughness, personal success and more. Beyond the 15 minutes of fame garnered by the post, is there any legitimate science behind these and other less dramatic ways to step into and through discomfort? And why, in the midst of the growing popularity of these strategies, do most of us often find it difficult – not to step into an ice bath - but to simply get off the couch and get moving? What does the science – the evidence - tell us? Is an ability to do hard things due to genetics? Habit?  A combination of the two? Are there ways to enhance our ability to step into challenges with purpose? Or are we just stuck with the way we are, with no practical ways in which to enhance our skill set in this realm? In this episode, we'll dig into these questions and more as we explore the part of the brain that appears to play a significant role in the process of moving outside our veritable comfort zones, and why it's so important to both our current and future lives.
