In a world where health advice is abundant, it can be challenging to sift through conflicting data and headlines. One such contentious issue is the connection between red meat and type 2 diabetes. On this episode of The Health Edge, we take a critical look at this connection and aim to provide a balanced perspective on this often polarizing topic.The episode focuses on a recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health that has purportedly found a connection between red meat consumption and type 2 diabetes. This study suggests that red meat consumption increases the risk of diabetes by 62%. However, upon further scrutiny, we find that the absolute risk difference between meat-eaters and non-meat eaters is a mere 0.52% versus 0.37%. Furthermore, the study relies heavily on food frequency questionnaires, a method known to have numerous inherent flaws, thus raising questions about the study's overall impact.The world of nutritional epidemiology is complex and fraught with potential pitfalls. One of the most significant issues is the use of confounding variables, factors that can interfere with the results of a study. For instance, when considering red meat consumption, how do we separate the impact of the meat itself from the other components often associated with it, such as high-fat sauces or refined grains? However, it's important to remember that quality nutritional research can be elusive. Therefore, the focus should not just be on what food one consumes, but also the overall nutrition and lifestyle factors.To truly understand the implications of such studies, it is vital to consider the overall nutrition and lifestyle of an individual. A person's health is not just determined by their food choices but also their overall lifestyle. Factors such as physical activity levels, sleep patterns, stress levels, and even social determinants of health play a significant role in determining health outcomes. A hamburger consumed by a physically active person who maintains a balanced diet may not have the same health implications as the same hamburger consumed by a sedentary individual with a diet rich in processed foods.In conclusion, while it is essential to remain informed about the latest nutritional research, it's equally important to approach these studies with a critical eye. While the connection between red meat and type 2 diabetes is a topic that continues to garner attention, it's clear that more comprehensive research is needed. ORN The Body Is Not Solid show notes 10/4/22 We're here to be happy and productive. What keeps us from doing what we want? A thought, image or feeling. And these aren't who we are. We can choose what we hang on to. Strong feelings are in our body. Doing a self-inspection. Look and see without commenting on it. Aches, pains, numbness, anything and all will rise up into your consciousness. The energy of any bodily unhappiness will dissipate with the awareness of separateness at the spiritual level. This is how the body heals. Can do supplements, herbs and meds, but true healing needs a spiritual metamorphosis. Does spirit or God heal us? Sort of, but not without our participation. Babies and animals know what is going on. So do all other souls. Talk to them in normal conversation. Story of his cat's departure from Patrick's home on the earthly plane and then returning to Patrick. Listener comments on weather and climate changes. Listener says 5G is designed to kill the vaccinated. Was measles proven not to exist, per Stefan Lanka's court case? Measles is a detox process, a rite of passage for kids. It has not been proven to be a virus. Isn't meat harder to digest? Animals are the most species appropriate diet. Microbiome is different for meat than for carbs. Best to transition slowly to animal-based diet to build up the best microbiome for meat. Dr. Zoe Harcombe says no evidence that fiber is necessary or good for us. Bill Gates says it's impractical to insist on reducing meat consumption to ease climate change. They don't want us to live a long time. They want us to take their meds and fall apart. Tension is number one cause of disease. Relax. Trust God. Don't buy into fear porn. As we clean things up with diet and spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, the more the time between sowing and reaping shrinks. Work through the karma.

Today's guest is Zoe Harcombe, she is an internationally respected health researcher with a unique ability to dissect and explain nutritional research.  Zoe talks about her background and own health challenges as a young woman and her poor relationship with food. She discusses how the obesity epidemic started to take off and how she became a full-time researcher, commentator and presenter. We also talk about Ancel Key's and the importance of his work on low-calorie diets and how what that has taught us about the calorie in versus calorie out the theory of dieting. We talk more about low-calorie diets and how these affect our metabolism and increase our body fat storage. Zoe explains why we are in much worse shape after a calorie-restricted diet than we were beforehand and why fat and protein are essential for the repair and maintenance of our body, whereas the only role of carbs is to provide us with energy. The dietary guidelines have got this backward and are making us sick and overweight. Zoe discusses her research into dietary guidelines. She explains there was not one shred of evidence that plant and low-fat diets were more nutritious than protein and fats from animal foods. Animal protein and fats are extremely rich vital nutrients we need for a healthy body and are far more nutritious than plant foods.  Despite this animal foods have been demonised and while the virtues of a plant-carb heavy diet have been adopted worldwide with disastrous consequences for our health.  She discusses the work of Belinda Fettke who has uncovered the role the Seventh Day Adventist Church and Sanitarium play in influencing nutrition recommendations from NZ and Australian GPs and Dieticians.Zoe talks about her 20 years of vegetarian experience and the many people who were previous vegetarian/vegans who now support the real food message due to suffering serious health consequences. Zoe had unnecessary eye surgeries due to nutrient deficiencies. She discusses why we need to know a lot more about food and what it does in our body and the difference between the availability of the nutrients from animal foods and plant foods.Zoe talks facts about fat. The kind of fats contained in a range of food, surprisingly blueberries contain saturated fat. A little-known fact is olive oil has more saturated fat than a beef steak. Yet, we are told not to eat red meat because it is full of saturated fat. Another misconception is oily fish has more saturated fat than red meat, but we are told oily fish is good for our hearts and red meat is dangerous.She talks about the difference between the vitamins and micronutrients available from plants and animal foods. “Eat food, mostly animals, quite a lot”.  Advice to parents for feeding kids and how to manage junk food. Zoe Harcombe is a researcher, author, blogger, and public speaker in the field of diet and health. Zoe has a BA and MA from Cambridge University (economics/maths) and in 2016, she was awarded a Ph.D. in public health nutrition. Zoe's thesis title was “An examination of the randomized controlled trial and epidemiological evidence for the introduction of dietary fat recommendations in 1977 and 1983: A systematic review and meta-analysis.” Zoe is known for 1) Being the first person to examine the evidence base for the dietary fat guidelines at the time of their introduction (US 1977 and UK 1983). Discovering that not only was the randomized controlled trial evidence NON-supportive of the introduced guidelines but that fewer than 2,500 sick men had been studied in the process. 2) Coining the phrase ‘the Eatbadly plate', which became ‘the Eatbadly guide'  in March 2016. 3) Devoting 7 chapters of my 2010 obesity book to dissecting calories generally and the 3,500 calorie myth particularly. 4) “Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim”. This became the title of her 2004 (revised 2013) book, which is still unique in explaining physical reasons for overeating and how to overcome these. 5) Journal article dissection: Zoe receives requests from all over the world (many from my own heroes) asking if I can dissect a particular paper, which has led to daft media headlines e.g. margarine is better than butter. So many corners of the internet still believe that carbs are evil - and it can feel like the arguments are valid, like there is some conspiracy against them. Carbs stimulate insulin, insulin causes fat gain, so carbs must be avoided at all cost - and as a result carbs are driving the obesity epidemic. We break down this argument, look at prominent researchers and practitioners like Zoe Harcombe and Robert H. Lustig that are proponents of such narratives and the claims they make, and explore the wider argument. We also discuss how to challenge these beliefs, where and when people's minds can't be changed and how to tactfully use Socratic questioning to help the other person realise their arguments faults. Te dejo la entrevista que me hizo Rosa Sorribas de Crianza Natural el pasado 9 de Julio en relación a la publicación de mi libro "desayuno con garbanzos", en el que hablamos sobre él y sobre alimentación infantil. Estas son las preguntas que me plantea Rosa en la entrevista:- El libro lo empiezas directo al grano comentando la gran diferencia de alimentación de la humanidad, que más o menos se ha mantenido bastante parecido desde hace miles de años hasta hará unos 50 ó 60. ¿Crees que hemos llegado ya a un punto que la gente se está dando cuenta de que nos estamos pasando con la industrialización de la alimentación?- Yo siempre hablo de que lo que deberíamos comer son alimentos, no productos que salen de una fábrica, sea de vegetales o de animales. Ir más al mercado y menos al súper.- Comentas lo de leer las etiquetas, pero tal vez deberíamos evitar lo que tenga etiquetas o las que tengan más de 5 ingredientes o que no identifiquemos lo que pone, no?- Continúas en el libro con el problema del sobrepeso y la obesidad. Es curioso porque desde que se cambió la alimentación, con la pirámide y luego el plato, cada vez vamos peor. Vaya, comentas que la causa fundamental es un desequilibrio energético y que cada vez comemos más grasas y hacemos menos ejercicio. Pero los estudios dicen todo lo contrario. Vaya, cada vez hay más gimnasios, vídeos para hacer ejercicio en casa, más Decathlons y grandes tiendas de deporte en todas partes. Además el consumo de grasas ha bajado según las estadísticas. Parece que algo no cuadra.- Luego ya empiezas con lo que parece ser el problema base: la resistencia a la insulina. ¿Nos puedes contar un poco sobre qué es?- Luego tratas sobre los problemas cardiovasculares. No sé si has leído un comunicado del Colegio de Cardiología Americano donde reconoce el error de que el consumo de grasas saturadas esté relacionado con las enfermedades cardiovasculares. En una revisión que se acaba de publicar (https://www.onlinejacc.org/content/early/2020/06/16/j.jacc.2020.05.077) incluso reconoce que su consumo protege contra infartos. Supongo quepronto veremos una revisión en los libros, anuncios en la tele, con recomendaciones de comer morcilla y matequilla, no?- De aquí pasamos ya a la definición de alimentación saludable. En esta definición dices que deberíamos comer básicamente verduras, hortalizas, frutas, legumbres y cereales integrales. Pero en caso de los niños, al menos en el inicio, en la fase de alimentación complementaria, ¿no crees que primero, la alimentación debería ser más parecida a la composición de la leche materna y segundo, la idea debería ser que fueran probando una gran variedad de texturas y sabores?- Por otro lado, en el tema de los cereales hay mucha controversia. Se recomiendan cereales integrales, pero los intestinos de los niños pequeños no están formados todavía para gestionar los antinutrientes que tienen, por no hablar de la enorme cantidad de fibra que contienen. Tenía entendido que los alimentos deberían ser nutricional y energéticamente densos y los cereales integrales no son ni una cosa ni otra.- Lo que está claro es que en sobrepeso y obesidad infantil, España va a la cabeza junto con Italia y Grecia, no sólo en Europa sino también en el mundo. Hay algo que no se está haciendo bien, no?- Porque la idea de la dieta mediterránea parece que cae viendo estos datos o es que no se entiende bien ese concepto? O tal como indica Nina Teicholz en su libro The big fat surprise, es un montaje comercial? - En el libro hablas también de las vitaminas y minerales. Si la alimentación de nuestros hijos es tan nutricionalmente escasa, es normal que tengan déficit de muchas de ellas.Es sorprendente la relación de un déficit de vitamina B12 con el autismo. ¿Crees que no hay suficiente consciencia de la importancia de una alimentación nutricionalmente adecuada?- Porque el principal motivo para iniciar la alimentación complementaria es que las reservas de hierro en el bebé se acaban alrededor de los 6 meses. Me sorprende que en lugar de ofrecer alimentos ricos en este mineral, se ofrezca la alimentación que mucha gente toma para perder peso, vaya, verduras, frutas y hortalizas. ¿No se debería ofrecer hígado y sesos comose hacía hasta hace un par de generaciones?- Curiosamente, a los niños no se les daban ni frutas ni nada vegetal hasta el año o más hasta hace muy poco debido a la falta de agua potable para limpiarlas. ¿Crees que esto puede haber contribuído al aumento de sobrepeso y obesidad?- También hay la recomendación de las 5 raciones de frutas y verduras, pero eso se traduce en plátanos, no en brócoli. Además que no hay ninguna evidencia clara tras esto, como bien explica Zoe Harcombe.- Robert Lustig, un pediatra y endocrino de la universidad de California San Francisco, comenta que cuando los niños obesos dejan de tomar fructosa, de repente tienden a querer hacer ejercicio. Vaya, incluso antes de perder peso, quitando fructosa y menos carbohidratos simples, con más vegetales y alimentos animales, su humor varía e instintivamente se mueven más. ¿No será que con una alimentación basada en plátanos y macarrones les limitamos sus ganas de ejercicio?- Belinda y Gary Fettke, enfermera y cirujano de Tasmania, que llevan la web nofructose.com, ha dado muchas conferencias en todo el mundo sobre el papel del conglomerado de empresas bajo la influencia de Kelloggs. Es impresionante. Después de escucharla da pánico ver la gran cantidad de cajas de sus productos en las estanterías y la percepción de lo sanas que son por parte de la sociedad. Y de repente sales tú con desayuno con garbanzos y el revuelo que se montó en las redes. ¿Crees que todavía la sociedad no está preparada a darse cuenta de lo manipulados queestamos?- Con los cambios que están habiendo, como lo que he comentado del colegio de cardiólogos, o lo de que la presidenta de la asociación americana de diabetes ha mejorado su salud considerablemente tras cambiar su alimentación por una baja en carbohidratos y ahora laconsidere dentro de sus recomendaciones, parece que los nutricionistas tenéis muchos dogmas que cambiar, no?- Volviendo a la alimentación infantil, uno de los problemas más graves que nos encontramos es la masticación, que les damos demasiadas cosas blandas a los niños. La mayoría de menús que veo son hamburguesas de quinoa, falafel, bizcochos con dátiles y cosas así que ostras, luego no meextraña que haya tanta caries y problemas bucales.

Zoë enjoyed a successful career in blue chip organisations before leaving corporate life in 2008 to pursue her passion. Having written three books between 2004 and 2007, Zoë began to research obesity full time. This culminated in the publication in 2010 of The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it? Zoë returned to full time education in 2012 to complete a PhD in public health nutrition (awarded March 2016). Her thesis was entitled “An examination of the randomised controlled trial and epidemiological evidence for the introduction of dietary fat recommendations in 1977 and 1983: A systematic review and meta-analysis.” A number of peer-reviewed articles have emanated from this work. The first was the 64th most impactful paper in any discipline in 2015. Why is losing weight so difficult? This is the question Zoe Harcombe set out to answer while studying at Cambridge University. We are trained from an early age to seek solace in food. Sweet treats are a central part of nearly every holiday we celebrate. According to Zoe, food in the form of starchy carbohydrates has become the world’s most accessible and acceptable drug. At the same time, the US Dietary guidelines reinforce these behaviors by recommending a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fat. After years of following these dietary recommendations, most people find themselves with one or more of the following conditions, that in all likelihood is sabotaging their weight loss efforts: hypoglycemia, candida, and food intolerances. Today Zoe helps us understand the symptoms and treatments of these conditions. This episode of the show follows a slightly different format from the usual long-form interviews. I'm talking all things elimination and by that I mean the unavoidable topic of cutting out particular food types. I'm not, for one second, suggesting that anybody cuts out either dairy, gluten or sugar without good reason - consulting a GP or nutritional therapist, for example, should be the first move. However, if it is a decision you have come to then this show features interviews with three real women who, for reasons of their health and/or wellbeing, have cut out either gluten, dairy or sugar.  The purpose of this podcast is to simplify what can be a bamboozling topic, not to promote the idea of making radical changes to one's diet. In this 9-minute podcast Zoe Harcombe asks whether dietary guidelines were based on evidence or whether there were other drivers. She summarises what was in the literature at the time the 1977 (US) and 1983 (UK) guidelines were created. Importantly, she highlights that food choices have major implications on the planet.
