Host Munir Haque, in partnership with ActionEdge Executive Development, welcomes guest Brad Sugars to the show. Brad Sugars is the world's number-one business coach with a 30-year career. He is a found and chairman of Action Coach and has written 18 books on business, marketing, and leadership, including The Wealth Coach and Pulling Profits Out of a Hat. Brad discusses the nuances and necessities of governance management with Munir. In his book Pulling Profits Out of a Hat, Brad addresses the five disciplines of a successful business, which he details for Munir. A successful business necessarily must also have a well-organized board representing the needs of all customers, staff, suppliers, lenders, banks, shareholders, and the community. Brad identifies how board governance has been perceived as a pain for a CEO but in reality, the role of the board is to assist the CEO and the growth of the business which means being a proactive board rather than a reactive one.Munir and Brad discuss board member roles, what makes a great chairman, and how the five disciplines of a successful business can be applied to board governance and coaching boards. Brad has coached boards, giving him insight into what it takes to coach the different members of a board effectively, and he shares what it takes to maintain board functionality and unity while simultaneously identifying what individual members need and what's best for the company. Governance management can be an intricate process but Brad Sugars addresses exactly the type of work that must be invested into a board's success.  About Brad Sugars:Professionally, nobody has created a bigger impact on Brad Sugars' life than Jim Rohn. As a teen, Brad scrimped and saved his allowance in order to afford tickets to a Rohn seminar, and despite being the youngest person in the audience, what he learned there has informed his own business practices and philosophies throughout his life. Now, internationally known as one of the most influential entrepreneurs, Brad Sugars is a bestselling author, keynote speaker, and the #1 business coach in the world. Over the course of his 30-year career as an entrepreneur, Brad has become the CEO of 9+ companies and is the owner of the multi-million dollar franchise ActionCOACH®.As a husband and father of five, Brad is equally as passionate about his family as he is about business. That's why, Brad is a strong advocate for building a business that works without you - so you can spend more time doing what really matters to you.—Contact Brad Sugars: Website: BradSugars.comWebsite: ActionCoach.comBooks: Books By Brad SugarsLinkedInInstagramYouTubeContact Munir Haque | ActionEdge Executive Development: Website: AEEDNow.comLinkedin: Action Edge Executive Development Inc.Podcast Production:Recording:  PushySix StudiosProduction Assistance: Astronomic Audio—Transcript Brad Sugars: [00:00:04]  When the CEO dreads board meetings, if the CEO dreads the board meeting, you know that there's a challenge going on. There's a lack of support for the CEO. They're not being supported to get the job done type thing. If you don't, if you as a board don't believe in the CEO, then move on. Don't just punish them for 9, 12 months and then move them on type thing. It's not going to grow the organization. The second is when you see the sidebars happening, when the board is not operating as an inclusive group, when the meeting happens, and then people go outside and do their little chats with each other, and instead of saying it in the room, they say it outside of the room. A board that is open, trusting, believing in each other is necessary for it to be the case. There has to be that level of willingness to have the hard discussions in the room.Munir Haque:  [00:01:02] Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of The Boardroom 180 Podcast. I'm your host Munir Haque, an executive coach and senior board strategist. I have partnered with Action Edge Executive Development to lead their governance and political acumen division. I was wondering if you could kind of go through those five disciplines and maybe give a little bit of an example to kind of so that our listeners can picture what you're getting at.Brad Sugars: [00:03:42] Yeah. In ensuring a business's success, it is vital to come up with effective foundations and strategies to run the business. A strategy is the company's working plan or model towards achieving its dreams and visions. Therefore, more than anything, thorough and careful planning is the heart of a business strategy. In today's episode, the one-and-only Brad Sugars is with us to talk about his latest book, "Pulling Profits Out of a Hat." Brad is the founder and CEO of the world's number one business coaching firm, ActionCOACH. They provide training to over 15,000 companies to lead them to success. He is also the best selling author of 16 acclaimed business books. Also joining us today is serial business owner, educator, and founder of podcasting services company-Valher Media, Charley Valher. Tune in to the show if you want to learn more about the fundamental disciplines you need to integrate into your business and how you can create leverage for growth.   The Pulling Profits Book (1:18)  It is Brad's 17th book to be published. His previous books were bestsellers on the Wall Street Journal and Amazon. It takes time to be successful in anything. It came because of a conversation on the difference between a company that grows profit exponentially, and one that doesn't.  Together with his co-author, they came up with five core disciplines that a business needs to understand.  The Biggest Mistakes In Setting Up Business Foundations (3:47) Small businesses' biggest mistake is looking to have a business that revolves around them. Big businesses' biggest mistake, on the other hand, is focusing on one thing rather than dwelling on the five key areas. The Five Disciplines of Pulling Profits (4:41)  First is the discipline of strategy. How is the business designed to grow? Second is the discipline of mission. It is about the emotional connection between the staff and the company, as well as the team and customers. The third discipline, the discipline of business development, is the key to generating sales. Fourth is the discipline of execution, which sets up the success of the business. And finally, the discipline of people. The quality of your people determines the quality of the business. Creating Leverage (7:39)  The first stage of leverage is doing the work once you get paid long-term. The best business owner or the best corporate executive is someone who does work on time that pays back. Training your people brings customers who stay long-term. ActionCOACH (10:21)  The core of investing is real estate and shares. Brad had to pioneer a new industry—the concept of business coaching, which started ActionCOACH—to come up with something new. Millennials have the most entrepreneurial mindset.  There is a shift in developing small businesses and a less corporate environment. Everyone is a billionaire in training. The question is: will you pass? In determining the success of the business, you go through the five disciplines in mind. Strategy always comes first because if there's a fundamental core business model problem, then it doesn't matter what you do with marketing and other things. There is a system for growing a business. The Difference Between Strategy and Tactic (17:49)  A strategy is about your business model strategy. It is more about the product or service. Apple creating leverage in different industries is an excellent example of a strategy. Marketing campaigns, on the other hand, is an example of a business tactic. The Goal of Pulling Profits (20:29)  Brad's plan behind every book is to build a model that people can understand and use. The time spent on thinking, learning, contemplating on brainstorming, and planning your business is way more important than the actual written document. Dream, goal, learn, plan, act. Pulling Profits Out of a Hat Pulling profits out of a hat is something that salespeople are raving about. But how do you go about it?  Brad Sugar has been in the teaching business for 26 years and now has coaching offices in over 80 countries. He's also a published author with 17 books in his name. He appreciates being able to help others grow their business and keeps expanding his business to be able to help more people improve their sales.  One of his recent books is Pulling Profits Out of a Hat: Adding Zeros to Your Company Isn't Magic 1st Edition. This book teaches companies how  to get multiple growths instead of percentage growth. As salespeople, challenge yourself to multiply your growth. If your company grew by 15% last year, make it an aim to grow it 15 times more this year.  The starting point is to believe that your business can multiply and have the right attitude in getting it there.  Pulling profits out of a hat Every business person is a business owner. Whatever your role is, whether it be a salesperson or a sales leader, you have your own section of the business.   Set your goals and be specific about them. What are the goals you want to achieve two times, five times, and so on? There are five core disciples mentioned in the book - strategy, business development, people, execution, and mission. You need to start with the strategy.  Strategy Strategy can be broken down into four main points:  Leverage Scalability Opportunity Marketability We define leverage as doing the work once and getting paid for a long-term basis. Bill Gates, for example, understood leverage. He made software once and he sold it forever. These days, Microsoft doesn't sell software anymore. They make you pay for it every single month. Steve Jobs understood leverage after he got fired from Apple. He bought Pixar and found ways to sell a movie repeatedly in various formats. They sell their products and they set their businesses up in a way that customers buy it over and over again all the while making a lesser effort in selling it. Salespeople find this challenging because they're not wired to do this. They are trained to do sales one at a time as opposed to the marketers who do multiple sales at a time. The selling one at a time mentality kills the business. A salesperson should remember all his strategies, from the short-term to the medium-term, and the long-term. Don't go directly to the long-term strategy where you build your reputation with social media and create content. Start from the short term goal of picking up the phone and making a call.   Scalability  Brad defines scalability as the next sale should cost less and is easier to sell. Salespeople need to keep building, to look at what the product or services they're selling, and how they're selling it. Work the scales into your program and go backward. Think of ways of how you can continually make money month after month.  Set goals that are based on the market and the opportunity size and not based on your own needs, desires, and previous results. #SalesSuccess Marketability  Look for products and services that are easier to sell and check their marketability. Zappos has a good market. It sells shoes and many people want shoes. They want shoes now, they want shoes next month, and they want new shoes just to look good. The market is rich and they have a product that's easy to sell.  Sales, marketing, and customer service all have to go hand-in-hand. This is easy if you don't want to grow your business but if you want to grow your business exponentially, you need to have a great sales system, a great marketing system, and a great customer service system.  Break down the marketing to the most granular loads and work backward from there because that's how you get good results. You don't leave the basic steps of doing the call even when you've already made it to the building connection phase.  Continue getting at least 20 connects a day or whatever number you're supposed to reach as a sales rep. There is no limit on how many you must do but there is a limit on how little you must do.  Testimonials and rankings are two of the most important things in marketing today. Find ways to make people give you testimonials and ask them to rank you. Value  Another thing that would help you be better in pulling profits out of a hat is to add value. Keep learning because you can only ever own as much as you've learned to make. It's also important to make sure that your sale is made before you turn up.  In real estate for example, when somebody calls asking for an appraisal, do not just send them an e-mail. Make it more personal and let them know why you're the company for the job. Send them a box filled with the magazine where testimonials of your customers are found. Deliver it to them as fast as you can. When the prospect gets the box, they'll think you're a genius and they'll want to work with you because you aren't just an email. You are as visible as the testimonials in the magazines show. This is how you make the sale before even showing up.  “Pulling Profits Out of a Hat” episode resources Always continue learning and never wish life were easier. instead, wish that you were better. If you don’t have discipline in business, you can’t expect your business to grow. In this video, I talk with Monte Wyatt, author of Pulling Profits Out of a Hat. His book is about growing an organization through discipline. Long-term company growth requires consistency, predictability, and stability. This book shows you how to create a business that will outlast you – not just a business you can build and sell, but a company whose processes, systems, and strategies will sustain it for the future.Monte says that building your company doesn’t have to be difficult. Once you’ve scaled your business, it’s ready to grow. But you have to keep concentrating on organizational discipline in business.Build your strategy around your company’s ability to solve a need in the marketplace. Employees and products will come and go, so focus on your company as a whole. Business success takes time and depends on your team’s willingness to adapt to change. Many entrepreneurs are geniuses in their fields but may be at a loss when it comes to running a company. You might have a successful business but not have any idea how to make it grow. How do you develop your employees, find your ideal customers, and create systems that can be duplicated?Business education books can be overwhelming. But Monte wrote Pulling Profits Out of a Hat for the everyday person, as a simple field guide to growing an organization. You need focus, commitment, and machine-like discipline in business. Don’t get distracted or put too much emphasis on the people in your boardroom or the products you sell. Instead, think about the organizational discipline of your entire company.Want to learn more about growing an organization? Connect with Monte Wyatt: https://addzerosnow.com/

Here's a simple truth; there is no magic when it comes to pulling profits out of your business; instead, there are five simple disciplines you need to follow, consistently.  My guest, Brad Sugars, is the author of Pulling Profits Out of A Hat. This book is his 17th, and he is also the founder of ActionCOACH, which operates in over 70 countries, has more than 1,000 coaches around the world, and coaches 15,000+ business every week.    "Get the right people you get the right business. Good people, great business".  Going Global Brad Sugars believes that if you can succeed in Australia and you don't go global, you're insane. Australia is a difficult market, but once you crack the market you have the choice; be a big fish in a small pond, or you can be a small fish in a much bigger pond and reap the rewards.    It's No Magic Pull profits out of business is not magic; there are five disciplines to follow consistently. They are called disciplines they are not the sorts of things you do just once and walk away.   The Five Disciplines  Strategy Business Development  People  Execution Mission Strategy The strategy is about the business model, where you look at the core of the business. There are four parts: Leverage - Do the work once and get paid forever Scalability - The next sale costs less and gets easier. You need to remove the human element of making the sale.  Opportunity Size Marketability "If you have not sat down and designed the strategy for your business, you've probably got the wrong strategy for growth on a massive scale". Business Development Business Development is a combination of sales, marketing and customer service.  People If you grow your people, they'll grow your business. No one has ever outperformed their training.  Execution Execution is where the rubber hits the road; it's all about checklists. If you want consistent performance, and you want to scale your business, people need lists to follow.  "If you can't explain a process simply, you probably don't know it well enough to teach". Mission What is the value of the company over and above the profits? Do your customers and team love being part of the business?  People never leave a business; they leave the management of the business.  Exponential Growth & Adding A Zero When all five disciplines are working together, you will get exponential growth, instead of percentage based profit growth.  So instead of trying to grow your business by 15% why not think about increasing it 15 times.  Once you get the fundamentals right, your goal should be to expand it to as many places as you can. You Get Paid 3 Ways  Your business should be paying you three ways:  Cashflow- you get paid wages or dividends from your profits. The business helps you invest a buys your assets.  The business helps build a saleable asset.  Your goal when you set up a business should be for it to run without you.  3 Reasons business Coaching Works The knowledge the coach has Accountability, the coach, brings to the table The coach can see the forest for the trees Customer Numbers  How many new customers do you want per week? If you have too many, can you service them? If you have too few your not keeping your staff busy enough and this effects cash flow.  Knowing your acquisition costs per customer is essential. If it costs $30 to buy a customer with marketing and the customer spends $100, you can afford as many customers as your service team can handle.  Monday Morning Tip Make a list on Friday afternoon of what needs to be done on Monday. Don't wait until Monday, and to make it simple, repeat this process every afternoon for the next day.  If you have any questions about this podcast episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com  You can also connect with Brad Sugars at www.actioncoach.com, www.bradsugars.com, and www.pullingprofits.com.  Podcast Reviews If you enjoy listening to It’s No Secret with Dr T., please tell your friends, and if you enjoy it a lot, it will put a HUGE smile on my face if you left a review on iTunes, or wherever you like to listen to podcasts.  Subscribe To My Newsletter If you'd like to be kept up to date with my speaking engagements, EVENTS and other activities I'm involved in, please sign up to my NEWSLETTER, and I promise not to spam you with daily emails.  FREE DOWNLOAD: First 16 Pages of My Book – It’s No Secret There’s Money in Small Business.
