In this episode, Ladey Adey is joined by Sheila Holt.Sheila's personality shines through in her business, which is unique in the finance sector as it specialises in building lifelong relationships, trust, and communication. It's the finance business with heart. Sheila's lightness and brightness of character together with her high energy, drive, and passion take the serious and often overcomplicated business of finance and turn it into something that flows with ease and clarity.Sheila recognises that she's both an outlier and a disrupter, which means that the standard career path never suited her – a discomfort that led her to a life-changing moment. Attending a neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) course in Hawaii opened her mind to entrepreneurship and gave her a completely different direction and purpose in life. Fascinated by how people think, Sheila developed a coaching practice utilising NLP to help her clients achieve clarity, focus, and success. During this time Sheila was also actively investing in property. The big lesson she learned from building a sizable portfolio was that in the property industry money needs to flow.In 2007, she loaned some of her own money to a property developer, recognising a need in the market. This was the first step to building what is now Sapphire Lending Ltd. The business has evolved and grown over the years and she's in the fortunate position of having attracted a great team, strong advisors, and good systems. All this was accomplished by applying the theories, practices, and actions outlined in her book. Shelia talks of the 40,000 lessons this is teaching her.Sheila has a postgraduate degree in career counselling and an MA in research and education. She revels in being an entrepreneur and sees it as one of the greatest personal development journeys you can go on. She is a lifelong learner. Tip: "I think writing is a very personal thing. I naturally write from the heart, emotively. It is about recognising who your readers are – who do you want to read your writings, and why? How do you want your readers to feel; what do you want them to do as a result of reading what you have written? Also think about the key message(s) you want to convey.Be clear about how you want your writing to position you – as a thought leader; an expert; a speaker; a mentor; etc"Favourite Quote: “Only connect the passion and the prose…” from Howards End by E M Forster Useful linksGuests: Sheila HoltWebsite: www.SapphireLending.com Book: https://amzn.to/3LESr07 Social media: Facebook: https://facebook.com/sheila.holt.9210LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/sheilaholt007 Instagram: https://instagram.com/sapphirelending Ladey Adey: https://www.ladeyadey.com/ Book Academy: https://www.ladeyadey.com/the-book-academy/ Vicky Galbraith - Podcast VA: www.podcastva.co.uk Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/ladeyadeyshow. In this episode, Ladey Adey is joined by Sandra Peachey.Ladey and Sandra met through networking. This episode, recorded on 14th February 2023 - Valentine's Day celebrates the 10th anniversary of the book Peachey Letters – Love Letters to Life. Originating from a blog in 2012, Sandra is celebrating this milestone by recording and releasing her first audiobook. Sandra has always felt she was a writer. As a small child when learning my words, she would imitate her father's grown-up, joined up-hand-writing, creating wobbly, meaningless versions of her own.Sandra confesses an obsession with people-watching. At the age of 11, she read psychology books and would peer over their pages on the bus ride to school, checking out the other passengers, and trying to read THEM, too.As years passed by, Sandra managed to combine a corporate career as a Human Resources expert: managing people, whilst crafting precisely written policies and perfectly polished letters. In her 40s Sandra had a happy mid-life crisis, took a pause from the Corporate world, and trained as a life and business coach. At the same time she became a Director of the Women's Personal Development community 'Damsels in Success' (now known as Simply Sisterhood), running groups in England and Scotland for over 5 years.Nervously, in February 2012 she began a blog called 'Peachey Letters', setting herself the challenge of writing a love letter to the world every day of February. Tip: "My first piece of advice to would be writers is simply to start and keep going! What you write and how you write will depend on why you write. As for me, well - I write for myself, first and foremost. I read broadly in fiction and self-fiction to keep my mind exercised and energised. Whilst there is a temptation to make comparisons, I always remind myself that only I can write the words I write" - Sandra Peachey.Favourite Quote: “So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Ladey Adey talks with Andy Bounds.Andy was awarded the title of 'Britain's Sales Trainer of the Year', and described by Astra Zeneca's Global Communication Director as “a genius, whose advice can't be ignored”. Andy's insights and passion stem from the fact his Mother is blind. This has given him a lifetime's experience in communicating from someone else's point of view, a critical skill to master when persuading others. Andy's three books are all international best-sellers, The Jelly Effect, The Snowball Effect and TOP Dog: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet - the latter co-authored with Richard Ruttle. The first was only kept off Amazon's #1 spot by Harry Potter! In this episode, we primarily talk about TOP DOG: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet. Andy's Tips: Writing:Find your “Active brain” time – write when your brain is at its best. For me, that's early morning. So I block out time early morning to write! The rest of my life has to fit around these diarised writing slots. Read it aloud – when you've finished writing a section, read it out loud to yourself. When you hear your writing, you'll instantly be able to tell if it sounds punchy and pacey. This works much better than just skim reading with your eyes. Never say “I think” – first-time authors can – very understandably – feel uncomfortable with stating their opinions forcefully. So they often use phrases like “I think” – for example: “I think there are four steps to a great networking conversation”. Remove these uncertain phrases – no reader wants to see a writer/expert who hedges their bets. A better example: “There are four steps to a great networking conversation” reads much better.Reading tips: Note down great ideas – when you read a great idea, don't just nod your head, think how wise it is, and assume you'll automatically use it for the rest of your life. You won't. So make a note of it somewhere, and then use it immediately bust guts to use this new technique in the next 24 hours. If you don't do it immediately after seeing it, it's unlikely to magically happen in the futureAndy's favourite quote: “First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable–it will sustain you whether you are inspired or not”. Octavia Butler, author."I love this quote because it reminds me that the thing that dictates my level of long-term success are the habits I get into. It's relatively easy to be inspired–find someone inspiring, and listen to them. But their inspiration isn't going to change your life three years later. Whereas, if you change your habits so you'll automatically do the right thing, that will change your life" Andy's thoughts.Andy Bounds: https://www.andybounds.com/Book: TOP DOG: Impress and Influence Everyone You Meet. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Top-Dog-Influence-Everyone-Paperback/dp/B015YMKROW/ Ladey Adey: https://www.ladeyadey.com/ Book Academy: https://www.ladeyadey.com/the-book-academy/ Vicky Galbraith - Podcast VA - www.podcastva.co.uk Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/ladeyadeyshow. It is wonderful to meet Angela Garry who is an author in her own right and as a biographer of Helene Hanff. The Book Academy members had read 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and although Helene is not with us any longer were delighted to find Angela had set up a facebook group dedicated to Helene and is in the process of writing her biography. This was the first book to be reviewed by The Book Academy Angela became interested in Helene Hanff's writing when she was university and joined the Cinema Society. One of the films shown was 84, Charing Cross Road which had been released the year before, This was back in 1988, and Angela says, “I loved the film and at the end of the film, I sat and watched the credits as you do, to realise it was based on the book by her Helene Hanff, she's was real person. And I rushed out and bought the book. This book was coupled with the book of the Duchess of Bloomsbury Street in one small volume. The latter is Helene's diary of traveling to London, on the strength of publishing 84. And then I returned to the bookshop another day and found more of her books and just started buying whatever I could of her six books for adults. This was the start of my relationship with this author – as a reader.” Angela went on to write to Helene and then met her in New York.In this podcast Angela reveals more about the visit and her continual interest in Helene Hanff's legacy. https://www.angelagarry.com/helenehanffScattered Leaves by Angela Garry about the life of Helene Hanff will be published later in 2022. Angela's own books are worth considering too. I would like to quote from her short story collection “Twisted Tales” In it Angela says, “Being a writer isn't something you just do. It's something you are, it comes from within” Later for my birthday in April, my daughter Abbirose and I visited the site of 84 Charing Cross Road (now a MacDonalds) and the plaque is there. I find the choice between which I prefer book or film so difficult (so I'm glad I don't really have to make a choice!) Sometimes I'd just love to curl up under a blanket by a fire and read a good book or even read a book in the bath and there's other times and I just want to get out and watch the film.Recently, we were watching the Oscars and had seen the BAFTAs before then. And I was really taken by the writer/director of Jojo Rabbit and as he took his award, he thanked his mum. But actually he was saying thank you because of the writer. Thank you because he won the best adapted screenplay and what he said and he being Taika Waititas. What was really great is not only did he thanked his mom, he thanked his mom for giving him the book and he said if he hadn't read the book and the book, was based on Caging Skies by Christine Leunan. And it was just wonderful because it made me think, yeah, without the book you couldn't have the film. Now, that doesn't always happen in some genres the film comes first and it's only film and then they produce books (like my all time favourite Frozen & The Showman!!). In the main, films are made from books. So what if the book inside you was made into a film, can you imagine that? And it's imagining where your book will go that is so important. Even before you've even got it on paper, to know that your book has got a life, your book might go somewhere that you can't even imagine at the moment. So I really want to encourage you to keep writing, keep getting your books out there. And maybe you will be mentioned in the Oscars or the BAFTAs one day! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Author and Marketing Guru Robert Middleton talks to Ladey about writing his first book and manual back in the last century! Well, 1999! The success of this as an e-publication and how he uses it in his marketing for helping self-employed professionals. He shares his knowledge and expertise for those starting out as authors of printed and e-book.He has a down-to-earth approach – when Ladey mentions that a lot of authors just want to do the writing and not the marketing of the book, his response was, “they need to get real!”An advocate of hard work bringing success and nothing is an overnight happening, Robert talks about how a book can transform a business, make it easier for the business person to be booked for speaking engagements with little haggling over fees – as a book makes a person an expert in their field.“To have credibility – there is nothing like writing a book,” says Robert, “and it adds to your community value”The best quote through the interview is “A book is your ultimate ticket for authority”. How true this is and if people want to have more clients, attend more meetings then a book is a really good way.Robert is the author of hundreds of reports and articles, indeed Ladey has had regular e-zines, and emails from him for over 20 years. 2020 could be the Year of Your Book.Is your book on the table or under the Table? When your book is ‘underneath the table’ it means your book is still an idea. It's not quite there yet. It's not into fruition. You might have certain doubts:· Is it good enough? · Will people really want to read it? · Plus other doubts and all the things that just keep attacking us and stop that creativity. Or it just might be the, well, I'm going to do it one day, but actually I'm too busy at the moment or this is happening and that's happening and therefore I'm going to postpone it. For me, that's a bit of a danger zone because while it is under the table, you can't see it and it can't develop. It can't grow because the thing about a book is when you start writing it, it takes on its own life and things that you never imagined that you would talk about and communicate through that written word happens, but it can't happen until you start it.Can I help?
