Hey there! Welcome to A Team Podcast. Glad you're here.Since you're here, it's very likely that you, or someone you know, has been searching for information about autism in adults. You've come to the right place. This podcast is all about authentic conversations about being an adult AND being autistic. We're out and proud, and you should be, too. We hope that hearing us talk and laugh (we laugh a lot) and occasionally cry (emotions overwhelm us) will make you feel nothing but positivity about life for autistic people. We call ourselves the A Team for a reason, and we're happy to have you join us. We're re-running our very first recorded conversation because we think it's an important one. Our two founders, Rafael and Robert, explore what it means to them to have learned as adults that they are autistic. We've heard from hundreds of people that this conversation helped them feel, for the first time, that an autism diagnosis was not necessarily a bad thing. In this conversation, we discuss life before and after getting diagnosed, Imposter Syndrome, masking to get along, the history of autism diagnosis, and how having a diagnosis leads to having more understanding and support. If you want more information about the topics we discuss, check out your podcaster's description of this episode for links. And check out the chapter markers to find things that may be important to you. Thanks for listening. Welcome to A Team Podcast. Happy new year! Glad you're here to celebrate our 10,000th download. But first…You may have noticed that we've been off the air for a couple of weeks, and there's an important reason for that: autistic burnout. You may not be familiar with the term, and you may not recognize the signs, but chances are you've felt it at some point in your life. A few weeks ago, as the result of the conversations we've had on this podcast, I came to realize that I was suffering the effects of burnout… stuff I've felt at various times in my life but always felt I had to fight through. And because of what I've learned here, I knew I had to take time for self-care, and that meant taking some time off from producing A Team. I'm glad I took care of myself. At this time of year, we may find that we're saddled with lots of obligations and expectations that can lead us to feel empty and unable to do anything. I was lucky enough to come across Neurodivergent Lou's excellent InstaGram post, What Does Autistic Burnout Feel Like?, and I recognized myself. We'll have a link to that Instagram post in the notes in your podcast provider's description of this episode. I urge to read it and keep a copy handy. Heck, knowing you, you'll probably laminate it!Now, to celebrate our 10,000th download and the thousands of people all over the world who, like you, listen to us, we have all five members of the A Team podcast team in on this conversation. We talk about what it means to connect with you, dear listener; holiday traditions vs bullshit rituals, gift giving anxiety; and the importance of self-care.Thanks, as always, for listening!Robert SmytheNeurodivergent_Lou "What does Autistic Burnout Feel Like?"

In this conversation, we talk about how fear of autism goes hand-in-hand with ignorance, new research on three types of autism that are connected to maternal risk factors, the weirdness of feeling connected to people you don't know, having a physical reaction to broken systems, and clapping seals and creepy clowns. Research points toward three autism subgroups with distinct prenatal risk factorsby Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
In this episode, we talk about ADHD testing, having a strong sense of social justice, responding to trauma with “small n narcissism”, and how much we should have to disclose to get our needs met. Here are links to and information about things we reference in this episode:AutiComm Universal DesignAutistic_CallumA Team Podcast's Judah episode The Disability Act 2005 defines Universal Design, or UD, as:1. The design and composition of an environment so that it may be accessed, understood and usedTo the greatest possible extentIn the most independent and natural manner possibleIn the widest possible range of situationsWithout the need for adaptation, modification, assistive devices or specialised solutions, by any persons of any age or size or having any particular physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual ability or disability, and2. In this episode we talk with Teal, an Occupational Therapist and autism researcher. We had a fun — and focused — conversation about what exactly an Occupational Therapist can do for you; the difference between medical and non-medical treatment; why accommodations must be goal driven; good news about autistics determining priorities for research; and the joyful work of shifting society through partnerships.
In this episode, we talk with Terra Vance, the founder of Neuroclastic.com. We talk about the problem with all behavior being one of communication, mirror neurons, how autistics are always in the present, autistics as whistleblowers, and being in the flow all the time.
In this episode, we meet Svenia, a student in Switzerland and long-time listener. We talk about how college roommates are the worst, snappy comebacks for mean office mates, mastering skills only to lose interest, time blindness, and how wombats have cube-shaped poop. Stay tuned at the end to hear about Svenia's interesting news.
In this episode, we talk with Carole Jean Whittington, host of the Mind Your Autistic Brain podcast. We talk about saying “I'm sorry” too much; social capital and how it's spent, the de-escalation protocol of being brief, informative, firm, and friendly, feeling like we need permission to be authentic, and 200 hamster wheels.
In this episode, we talk with Nelson, a student majoring in music composition. We talk about making mistakes as a vital part of the artistic process, becoming comfortable with the word “autistic,” and then becoming comfortable with what that word means, label versus identity, the exhaustion, euphoria, and self-acceptance of realizing you're autistic, and minoring in Japanese after you've taught yourself online just for fun.
In this episode, we talk with Hailey, a young Canadian who's been an A Team fan for a while and wanted to have a conversation with us. We talk about having autism as a personal mission, undertaking house renovations in your early 20s, the autistic trait of pointing out the absurdities that surround us, alexithymia which is the inability to recognize your own emotions, and the journey of recognizing and accepting that one is autistic and then sharing who you are.
This is an important and challenging episode that discusses what's actually happening to autistic people in the US. This is the second part of our exploration of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a therapy vilified by the autistic community in the United States for reasons that become apparent in our discussion with Louis, who actually worked in the US ABA industry as a 20-year old with a high-school diploma and is now working to expose the methods that are nothing like what we heard about last episode, when we talked with an ABA therapist in France who described how it's supposed to be used. We feel these two episodes provide important first-hand information about something lots of people are talking about.
There's non-stop laughter as we talk with Canadian comedian Michael McCreary, who started his career when he was thirteen. We discuss leaning into autism for laughs, the textures of various foods, living a life in the theater, the autism diagnosis “boom,” and how comedy can be a way of coping with life.
This is a funny, entertaining, and yet challenging episode. We were curious about something called Applied Behavioral Analysis, a therapy that is vilified by the autistic community in the United States, but we didn't really know why. So we spoke with Stéphanie, an ABA therapist in France, to find out what ABA is supposed to be. In episode 11, which drops in two weeks, Michael and I talk with someone with first-hand experience of ABA in the US, giving us two very different approaches to what should be the same thing. We think it is important to listen, think about questions you might have about this ongoing debate, and make up your own mind once you know more.
Michael talks with Tango, founder of the Auticomm network, and they discuss helping other later-in-life diagnosed autistics, whether to tell someone else that they're autistic, the possible evolutionary advantages of neurodiversity, and whether you should mind it when your cat watches you on the toilet.
Robert talked with Noor from the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (autisticadvocacy.org) about teachers who believe in you, why autistic people should always write grant proposals, learning to speak, how and whether to accept that you're disabled, and the logic of starships and superpowers.
In this episode, Brian, a recent college graduate who wants to go into the entertainment industry, asks Robert for advice. They talk about puppetry, how to tell stories, the catch-22 of getting a diagnosis, building networks that lead to jobs, the great thing about being 24, and how to have a coffee meeting with someone you want to talk to… and what the actor James Spader can teach us all about getting what we want out of life.
Robert talk with Danielle, a standup comedian and master of social work (MSW) about toxic behaviors that can sabotage you, trauma bonding, autistic-affirming jobs, and the funny side of being openly autistic.
Bobby from Season 1 is back, talking with Quinn in Auckland, New Zealand, about their careers as artists and their experiences of realizing they're autistic, “emotion blindness” (Alexithymia) and dealing with grief and guilt. They also discuss the horrors of bare feet!
Robert talks with Mykola Bilokonsky, who wrote the incredibly useful guide How to Talk About Autism Respectfully (https://coda.io/@mykola-bilokonsky/public-neurodiversity-support-center/how-to-talk-about-autism-respectfully-84), which has gotten over two million hits on Twitter. They talk about burnout, giving yourself permission to slow down, speaking truth at work, and self-internalized ableism. Serious topics, sure, but that didn't stop them from having a good time!
Robert and Michael talked with Jesse, who wrote and asked to join them in a conversation. They talk about the joys of stimming, using cannabis, self-acceptance, and what not to say when telling a joke. Bald heads rule!
We're back! We talk about how autistic life is going for us, our first 16 episodes, and what lies ahead in Season 2. Surprise! Somebody cries in this one… it might even be you!
We did it! We are in the building babe! Here we are with our first female autistic guest. Bry Law gave us a lesson about the female perspective inside the spectrum and we talked about diagnosis, lifehacks, how to person, and going to stim together.
