Shana Faulhaber is a Dallas-based criminal defense attorney who started drinking when she was 14 years old and continued to do so as she got older. In law school and in her early career, she rationalized that alcohol was a natural part of the legal profession, so she didn't have a problem, even as her nightly red wine habit escalated from one glass to one bottle to eventually a three-liter box. After admitting she had a problem, Shana's first effort at recovery involved the 12-step program. She attended 90 meetings in 90 days, as per the program's recommendations, but at the end of it she found the program did not resonate with her, and she continued drinking. At the time, the 12-step program was the only sobriety program she'd ever heard of. However, she was introduced to a different sobriety program, inspired by the book Rational Recovery, by a friend who had recently overcome heroin addiction. Through Rational Recovery, Shana has found lasting sobriety and advocates for lesser-known sobriety programs. However, she is certainly not against the 12-step program. If you're struggling with addiction, it's important to find the program that works for you and that you can adhere to in the long term. According to ANAD, at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. No matter what type of addiction you have, it’s difficult to confront when you’ve hit rock bottom and are in desperate need for a change. Today’s guest is Ryan Duff, the winner of Switch4Good’s recent contest that asked listeners to submit their own stories of overcoming personal challenges. Ryan is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he’s overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet. They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of veganism for your physical and mental health. Plus, find out where you can get Bee Free Honee, made from apple juice, and Alexandra’s favorite caramel-tasting Bahri dates. After you listen to Ryan’s inspiring story, check out the Switch4Godd blog to read more about his path to recovery. What we discuss in this episode: - What inspired Ryan to fully commit to a plant-based diet - Ryan’s relationship with food growing up and how he succumbed to an eating disorder - What The Lost Connections and Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari can teach us about addiction and depression - How the books Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen and Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey helped Ryan conquer his eating disorder - Ryan’s path to recovery, his daily nutrition plan and meal tips for runners - The status of the medical field in terms of knowledge about nutrition and how Ryan plans to shift people’s mindset about the benefits of eating a plant-based diet - Follow Ryan Duff on Instagram at @unleashtheduff or on Twitter at @ryanduff11. Today we talk about different types of drinkers: Trying to find the right language to describe the timeline of a drinker. Did we all start out as Normies? Sally grew up in an expat family where her older sister was acting out, her parents were quite strict and there was no talk about feelings and love in the home. Sally found ways to become manipulative and to seek attention at a young age and she began to have disordered eating before she hit high school. She then moved on to self harm as a coping mechanism as she did not feel comfortable in her own skin. She was in search of ways to feel happy; by the age of 12 she became addicted to marijuana and alcohol, then became addicted to crystal meth by the age of 15. Her teacher noticed something was wrong and eventually she got the help that she needed. This is Sally’s addiction story and her long and difficult path to recovery. This was such an interesting conversation I had with Dr Glenn Livingston. Glenn is a veteran psychologist who now specialises in 'food psychology' and helping people overcome self-destructive habits and binge eating. In fact, he's written a bestselling book on the subject called 'Never Binge Again', which came about after getting past his own demons with food and overeating. But the principles of the book aren't just applicable to food and eating habits, they're very relevant to overcoming any kind of self-destructive behaviour. So this is what we talked about on this week's podcast. In The Episode, We Talk About... How Dr Glenn overcame his own battle with food addiction to master his eating habits. The anatomical parts of your brain it's key to understand to end self-destructive behaviour. The importance of understanding and appreciating 'delayed gratification'. How to deal with uncertainty, self-doubt and low self-esteem. How to construct a plan for success in anything that sits right with your own brain. A simple mind trick to deal with 'cravings' to do or eat things not in line with our goals. Why a happy life may NOT come through loving every part of yourself unconditionally. How to recover from a mistake like a badass and not get bogged down by it. The purpose of pain and how to use it to your advantage. Dealing with other people who hold you back from achieving what you want. Links NeverBingeAgain.com "Rational Recovery" by Jack Trimpey This was an awesome episode and one I really enjoyed making on such a fascinating subject, so I hope you love it as much as I loved making it! You can give it a listen via the player above. Or head over to iTunes and subscribe there for Apple lovers, and over on Stitcher for non-Apple peeps. Love, Laughter & Light, Mike

Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and longtime CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. Dr. Glenn's work, theories, and research have been published in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Sun Times. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Glenn Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. www.NeverBingeAgain.com "If people go to my site and click on the reader bonuses, I will send them the kindle/nook book for free (or a PDF outside the USA), along with a set of Food Plan Starter Templates and a series of MP3 recordings where they can hear me coach people through full sessions using this method." Dr. Glenn shared. In today's interview Dr. Glenn teaches why Binge Eating and Overeating is such a popular problem. There are two factors which combine to form the perfect storm in our culture and have created a horrendously difficult mountain to climb for anyone who wants to stop overeating. (a) the food industry's billions and; (b) the addiction treatment industry's message of powerlessness. Dr. Glenn teaches us: How to define your own Food Plan to achieve your particular health and fitness goals How to stop overeating How to never binge again Please share this episode with all of your friends who are struggling with dieting or achieving their health goals.
