And did you know the way out is never through controlling the food? The way out is not another diet or meal plan. That's actually what keeps us trapped longer! Our first step towards healing our relationship with food is to stop restricting and to release all the rules that we have around food. Next, we create awareness around the triggers, the linked thought patterns, and the emotions and traumas that trigger us to turn toward food as a coping mechanism. If this conversation is speaking to you today, I want to invite you to download my food freedom workbook completely free at makepeacewithfood.com to help you get started on your healing journey. And because I know from experience how lonely and frustrating this journey can be, then I want to expand on that invitation and invite you to schedule a free 30-minute food freedom coaching call with me as well. Episode #74 In today's episode, Terri and Nadia discuss the Hot Topic of Self-Sabotage. Their conversation covers some theories about why we ALL self-sabotage and then how we can come to understand our unique reasons and learn ways to address these underlying causes. Lastly, Nadia answers one of your questions: Women like me are constantly told, “Women should not fast.” It was recently suggested to me to eat complex carbs and starchy vegetables a week before my cycle starts and my body will thank me for it. I'm curious why it's said that women need carbs but men do not. Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge is joining us for today's episode to talk about the 8 most common ways our mind tries to justify binge eating. Binge eating is one of those things that can make any bad situation worse, but that's not what our mind tries to convince us of in the moment, right? No matter how many times we muster the resolve to say “never again”, when struggling with binge eating, it can start to feel like when urges get strong, our mind comes up with a seemingly reasonable reason to justify a binge. So that's what Kathryn and I are talking about today!Strong Not Starving Workshop Pack: https://www.mkaincoaching.com/strong-not-starving-formBrain Over Binge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/brain_over_binge?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=M. Many people who've struggled with binge eating for a long time have come across the book "Brain Over Binge" by Kathryn Hansen. Sarah and Stef, co-hosts, both read the book as they tried to recover and are discussing how the method landed for them. The episode looks into: Stef's history and experience with reading BOB and taking the official BOB course Sarah's experience of “looking forward to” the next binge urge to learn a new response. Dismissal of urges as irresponsible – what if those messages from the primal brain are valid, asks Stef Weight and eating as pathological Minimization (demonization?) of conventional therapy Do some personality types find this approach easier than others? Sarah's use of RALIC to ride out binge urges - but not with the goal of not bingeing itself. What if giving yourself permission to binge does NOT feel okay? Does it work to delay a binge? Long before I launched this podcast, I knew I wanted to bring the topic Disordered Eating to my platform. Kathryn Hansen is my guest today and she is the author of ‘Brain Over Binge' a book that completely transformed my mindset around food. Kathryn suffered from an Eating Disorder and was able to free herself from this disease by creating her own unique approach. I can promise you that hers is radically different than anything you've ever heard before and I can't wait for you to hear what she has to say. In this episode we chat about her story and how she started out innocently trying to control her weight in high school, a time when we all feel self-conscious about our bodies. Over time, simple diets gave way to restricted eating which became a habit and eventually an uncontrollable desire to binge. When therapy failed to help her with her binge eating she decided to start digging into the neuroscience behind how the brain works and what she could do to harness that power of her brain to essentially rewire those habits and control the urges. Through years of research and trial + error she finally found lasting succcess and was able to beat the binge and decided to write a book to help others who were struggling. I discovered her book nearly a decade ago when I was also struggling with an ED and it totally shifted my mindset and changed my life. If you or someone you know is struggling with an ED please listen to this episode and visit her website to purchase her book or download her FREE audiobook. Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge, joins me on the podcast today to discuss: Processing an Urge Exercise in Recovery Believing Recovery is Possible & More. So excited to have her on. She was the first person that introduced me to the idea that binging was not just inherently me. That it could be coming from a habitual place instead. While I would recover for years after reading her book, Brain Over Binge was one of the major catalysts in my recovery.

Nikki and Andrew are excited to dance at the different weddings they are going to this weekend. Andrew tried to be accomplished by hitting up a Men's Warehouse today. Nikki wonders is she should splurge on a T-shirt and Andrew wonders the same about a watch. Nikki has been listening to a podcast called Brain Over Binge. You Heard It Here First; Waking up after death, more people believe in afterlife because of Tyler Henry, finding treasure and uncomfortable job interviews. In Nikki's Reddit Dump, she watches a video a ton of Besties wanted her to see, tips about not getting back to people and do men have someone that cares about them? In the Final Thought, Nikki decides she wants more drama on her next reality TV show. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Being that it's National Eating Disorders Awareness Week...this week's 4 things will be focused on bringing awareness to eating disorders and hopefully provide some hope and support to those affected by eating disorders. This topic is important to Amy because she spent much of her life with an eating disorder and didn't think recovery was possible. Now in recovery for over 2 years now, she wants the same for others. So today she shares 4 things from 4 different resources that have been helpful in her recovery so you'll know about them. FIRST THING: Amy shared a blog post that TheWellful.com put up sharing some signs that it's time to get support for your relationship with food and body image. She loves following @TheWellful on Instagram and we recommend you do the same! The account is run by Brenna O'Malley, RD; a Virtual Anti-Diet Dietitian offering Intuitive Eating & Body Image support!!! SECOND THING: Amy read an email that she got from an ‘Outweigh Podcast' listener (a podcast she co-hosts with @LisaHayim that comes out every Saturday). Amy wanted to share this note as a reminder to stop commenting on people's bodies and to remind you that OUTWEIGH can be a tool in your toolbox to offer a little support! The email is titled: Co-worker Comment Alert!, so make sure to listen to this so you don't end up being THAT type of co-worker! THIRD THING: Another person that has been a great resource for Amy during recovery is @Jennifer_Rollin! She is an Eating Disorder Therapist, author of ‘The Inside Scoop on ED Recovery' and founder of @theeatingdisordercenter! Jennifer shared some tips for traveling in eating disorder recovery and since spring break will be here soon...these tips might come in handy or maybe you even keep them in mind if you're not traveling until the summer. OR maybe you have no travel plans at all....these are still helpful tips that can be applied to everyday life at home! FOURTH THING: The final resource Amy shared with you is Kathryn Hansen's website: BrainOverBinge.com. There you'll find her blog posts, links to her podcast and you can see more about her book (there's even a recovery/study guide option to go along with the book). The Brain Over Binge book was huge for Amy in the early stages of her recovery! She read the book and then did some ‘Fork the Noise' courses with Lisa and finally built those new neural pathways helping keep her on track. Amy also gets Kathryn's ‘Brain Over Binge' newsletters (which are normally short and to the point, offering that right amount of encouragement), so she shared one of those with us today on the mindset you need to give up dieting! The subject of when the best time is to take steps to improve our relationship with food or recover from an eating disorder comes up a lot when I'm listening to people who reach out to me wanting to make changes. So today I'm really stoked to say that Kathryn Hansen, Author of Brain Over Binge is joining us here again to talk about whether or not there really is such a thing as the best time to begin recovery, and how things like stress or a high workload can influence our approach to the journey.

Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge, joins me in this episode to talk about her experience with binge eating, and how conventional therapy wasn't the answer. I struggled with bulimia and binge eating disorder for about 15 years, between the ages of 15 and 30, and during that time I did reach out for help and get therapy, but can't say it was conventional therapy that brought an end to my eating disorder. This is something that Kathryn talks about extensively in her incredible book, Brain Over Binge. I'm absolutely thrilled to bring you this conversation, and extremely grateful to Katheryn for taking this time to spend with us.Thanks for tuning in!Marcus Kain

Everyone should have a friend like Sarah Rentfro in their life. The best way to describe Sarah is to point to a description based on her Enneagram Type, which is a 9. From Truity: Peacemakers are social chameleons who can adapt to the group dynamic easily and help others get along. They’re soft-spoken yet loyal and fun to be around, intuitively knowing how to include and engage everyone in conversation. Peacemakers are cooperative and always willing to let someone join the circle and state their own opinions. Soft-spoken yet firm in their personal stances, they make an effort to neutralize tension and restore group harmony. Easygoing and willing to tolerate everyone, Peacemakers retain their self-esteem through being kind and helpful to others. They enjoy the comfortable side of life and may have a personal space to recharge from the outer world. Many are deep seekers of meaning and have a fond appreciation of spirituality and a sense of connectedness with the universe. Jill Devine met Sarah a couple of years ago. At the time, Sarah helped with the children’s ministry at the church Jill and Sarah attend, Messiah Lutheran. Jill actually referenced Sarah in Episode 46: Dealing With Depression and Anxiety, Having Jesus In Your Life, and Seeking The Still with Laura Fleetwood because Laura and Sarah are sisters. There’s often talk about social media and the negative side of it, but Sarah’s social media accounts are the exact opposite. She takes simple things, like baby carrots, and her viewpoint makes people literally laugh out loud. As with most people, there is a side to Sarah that is complex and not something she really likes to share on social media. Sarah was (and very much still is) recovering from a binge eating disorder. So many of the things Jill and Shannon Buescher talked about in Episode 30 (Part One) Women Face the Cultural Message “Thin Is Better” Every Day and Episode 30 (Part Two) We Are Taught We’re Successful If Our Body Gets Smaller were the things Sarah was dealing with every single day. Sarah had a binge eating disorder and the day after she read Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen, she quit binging. Sarah is now trying to focus on body neutrality and “living in the middle”. New to Season 4, the Supermom Shoutout! Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Amy of O’Fallon, MO! Her best friend, Michelle, nominated her and said: Hi Jill! My best friend, Amy, is a Supermom! She’s a single mom, going to school to get her Master’s, works for Sacred Groundz coffee truck (she’s actually a founder of that company), she volunteers for our church, Peace Lutheran, and she helps me with all my volunteer projects. Her daughter, Kylie, is absolutely amazing! She does gymnastics and just started Girl Scouts. Kylie keeps Amy pretty busy, yet Amy is able to do everything I listed and do it well. Amy – YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. Binge eating effects EVERYTHING!Perhaps you are not sure if you have/ do binge eat or perhaps your worried about a friend or family member who is not acting strange around food...DONT IGNORE IT!Heres the 4 11 on binge eating and some reasons why it happens and how to stop!Enjoy!x
According to ANAD, at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. No matter what type of addiction you have, it’s difficult to confront when you’ve hit rock bottom and are in desperate need for a change. Today’s guest is Ryan Duff, the winner of Switch4Good’s recent contest that asked listeners to submit their own stories of overcoming personal challenges. Ryan is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he’s overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet. They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of veganism for your physical and mental health. Plus, find out where you can get Bee Free Honee, made from apple juice, and Alexandra’s favorite caramel-tasting Bahri dates. After you listen to Ryan’s inspiring story, check out the Switch4Godd blog to read more about his path to recovery. What we discuss in this episode: - What inspired Ryan to fully commit to a plant-based diet - Ryan’s relationship with food growing up and how he succumbed to an eating disorder - What The Lost Connections and Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari can teach us about addiction and depression - How the books Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen and Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey helped Ryan conquer his eating disorder - Ryan’s path to recovery, his daily nutrition plan and meal tips for runners - The status of the medical field in terms of knowledge about nutrition and how Ryan plans to shift people’s mindset about the benefits of eating a plant-based diet - Follow Ryan Duff on Instagram at @unleashtheduff or on Twitter at @ryanduff11. Kathryn Hansen recovered from bulimia in 2005; she is now dedicated to educating and empowering women and men who struggle with all forms of binge eating. She is the author of Brain over Binge: Why I Was Bulimic, Why Conventional Therapy Didn't Work, and How I Recovered for Good (2011), which is a personal memoir of her own eating disorder and recovery; and The Brain over Binge Recovery Guide: A Simple and Personalized Plan for Overcoming Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder (2016), which is a self-help book based on the concepts that helped Kathryn and many others stop binge eating. Kathryn provides an alternative voice in the field of eating disorders—teaching brain-based reasons for why binge eating occurs, and departing from mainstream ideas that say eating disorders are the result of underlying emotional/psychological problems and require years of therapy to fix. She does not believe bulimia and binge eating disorder are diseases, but instead very natural, but “primitive” brain responses to restrictive dieting and the repeated overconsumption of highly stimulating foods. She teaches readers how to take back control from the primitive part of their brains, and use their higher cognitive power to chart a path to recovery in the most efficient way possible. Her goal is to make recovery attainable for anyone who wants to live free of binge eating. http://www.brainoverbinge.com

Binge Dieting Learn how to change your relationship with Eating
Betsy Thurston MPH RD talks about the approach to recovery that was presented in the book , "Brain Over Binge" by Kathryn Hansen. In this book the theory is that we absolutely have control over binge eating and that sometimes more in-depth therapy is unnecessary. Betsy talks about the key points in this book and how these ideas compare to other more common recovery models.
After a terrible case of food poisoning or stomach flu, I let go of knowing what to expect from my body and assuming I know what it needs. I'll be on call again for jury duty next week (postponed due to my illness) and may not be online. Thank you to a new Coffee Klatcher for supporting the show with virtual coffee and to BC Sandy for recording our shared bonus show last week. We hear some of the comment reactions to that show from Cheryl, Dawny, Amy from WI and Sandy. Foolish Fun from Dawny. Participate in the show with different audio possibilities. We greet new BCs Allie from FB and Dave’s wife, Kathleen. An awesome new song recommendation for the Latin bilingual band, Moona Luna sent by BC Dave. María from a Spanish Speaking country goes on the bravery report for revealing just WHICH Spanish Speaking country she’s from. BC Happy reveals how she’s doing and what she thinks of Kathryn Hansen’s book, Brain Over Binge. My riff about hunger, binges, self awareness and all of the different attributes we juggle when finding tools and methods to help US find our own unique ways.
It's a blustery day on the mountain, and despite the wind, today's show is all about the BCs! After I let go of the idea of trying and embrace the idea of being, I welcome a record number of new brave companions - Chelsea, Dave and his wife, Jo, Nola from Alberta, Rachel from Sydney, Justine and Devon. I thank Nola for her 5 star review on iTunes Canada. We catch up with a few BCs we haven't heard from for awhile, including Happy who has questions for us about binge durations and what we think of Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen. We also hear from Lisa, Maria from a Spanish Speaking country and my in person BC pal, Sandy. We celebrate the bravery of BC Carol from Detroit for posting her story on Who are the Brave Companions. We also feature comments on that story by Dawny and Sue from the UK. Amy from WI shares why I asked for prayers for her last show and Stéfanie from Quebec tells us why she's been quiet of late.
