In this Minisode of Make Peace with Food. I discuss the topic of binge eating and explore new perspectives on understanding and overcoming it. You'll learn the true definition of binge eating and more importantly, understand that it's actually a nervous system issue. During today's conversation, I'll also give you practical insights into how the nervous system influences your relationship with food. By identifying different patterns like emotional eating, nighttime snacking, and the cycle of extreme dieting, we'll look at how these behaviors manifest and how they can be overcome Remember that the first step towards healing is to release self-judgement. I'm always a resource for you. We're in this together! Key Takeaways: Binge Eating Defined: Binge eating isn't strictly about consuming large amounts of food; it includes any behavior where you feel out of control with your eating habits. Nervous System Connection: Many eating behaviors, including binge eating, can be traced back to nervous system issues, rooted in our body's response to stress and emotions. Breaking the Cycle: Addressing binge eating requires understanding and adjusting the nervous system states that lead to unwanted eating behaviors. The Role of Emotions: Emotional eating is a form of binge eating, often triggered by discomfort or intense emotions, ranging from anxiety to boredom. Sustainable Change: Real progress with eating habits involves working on the nervous system first, to then comfortably manage and enjoy food choices without excessive restriction. Looking for the strength to overcome a health scare? This week's guest courageously shares her journey battling an eating disorder, an early onset scare with breast cancer, and managing her anxiety. Other areas of discussion with Alyssa Young: Having a mindset that you are already doing enoughWhy breathing exercises are a game changerDon't downplay your tough timeScheduling time for happinessAt the young age of 14 years old, Alyssa experienced her first anxiety attack. She was actually on a mission trip in Miami with her youth group, and didn't even realize what "anxiety" was at the time. Anxiety can present itself in so many different ways, including physical symptoms of which she was experiencing. Her youth pastor and another one of their other staff members took her to the emergency room late that evening, and as they ran many tests to check everything physically, everything came back normal. Nothing was physically wrong, which was great news, but when they concluded everything, she was told that she had an anxiety attack. Upon returning home from the mission trip, Alyssa followed up with her PCP as normal, and began her journey with a phenomenal therapist. Alyssa learned the ins and outs of anxiety and what it was, what could trigger it, and gained so many amazing tools that she still implements to this day! Since the age of 14, which would be 11 years ago, Alyssa has been thrown many curveballs in her life including an aggressive eating disorder, an early onset scare with breast cancer, being hospitalized due to both of those, and of course the ongoing journey of feeling that she is enough in every way.Stay tuned for the spotlight story at the end of the show. Vincent and Alyssa will dive into an article discussing eating disorders. This week, we present a bonus episode from our friends at Switch4Good. If you're not familiar with the work of Switch4Good, they are an evidence-based nonprofit, advocating passionately for a dairy-free world. For too long, society has accepted the distortion and misinformation Big Dairy feeds us. So Switch4Good exists to set the record straight, for the sake of human health, food justice, and the future of our planet. They work with health experts, athletes, social justice warriors, enlightened policy-makers, and progressive corporations to promote ethical lifestyles and widespread behavioral change related to how we eat. The Switch4Good podcast is hosted by Olympic medalist, Dotsie Bausch and former Baywatch actress, Alexandra Paul. I believe so much in the work they're doing that I wanted to share one of their podcast episodes with you today, especially as it relates to athletic performance. Ryan Duff is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he's overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet. They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of a whole-goof plant-based diet on your physical and mental health. As he says in the interview, “I don't run to eat. I eat and run.” Episode Resources Download the Free Plant-Based Playbook from Switch4Good: https://switch4good.org/plant-based-playbook/ Join Team PLANTSTRONG and run with Rip! https://plantstrongfoods.com/pages/team-plantstrong Original Episode show notes - https://switch4good.org/from-binge-eater-to-an-ultra-runner-with-ryan-duff/ Ryan Duff Instagram - @unleashtheduff

She Breaks Free....Ditch the Diet & Change Your Relationship with Food & Fitness
Have you ever started a "new diet plan", excited, ready to start and 10 days in you find yourself bingeing & overeating everything you can get your hands on? Or what about you've just started to see some weight loss after being on your "new plan" for a couple weeks and then you have a "weak" moment, only to find yourself eating the whole pint of ice cream. In today's Fit Tip Friday, we'll talk truth about weight loss as someone who binge eats. Is it possible? Can you do both and have success?
When you were a child, did you ever have an adult tell you not to get up from the table until you ate every bite of food on your plate? If so, you may have been initiated into the "clean plate club". The problem with the clean plate club is that it causes you to ignore your body's own hunger and fullness cues. Instead, it teaches you to rely on an empty plate to tell you when to stop eating. One of the biggest dangers of being part of the clean plate club is that you may unintentionally pass this habit on to your kids. If children are taught to eat even when they're not hungry, that can set them up for a lifetime of overeating and binge eating. In this episode, I talk about why we may think asking our kids to clean their plates is helpful, but why it actually isn't in reality. I also talk about what you can do instead to support your children at mealtimes. ✅ FREE TRAININGSeptember 25, 2022 from 2-3pm Central Register: https://coaching.drtrinadorrah.com/diet-culture-is-bsWant to work with me one-on-on? Did you know that your thoughts about your body determine how you feel about your body? It's easy to believe that if you could just lose a few pounds, or if you could change the way you look, then you'd be able to accept your body. In reality, what you weigh and the size you wear are just facts. We call these facts "circumstances". Your circumstance DOES NOT create your feelings. Instead, your THOUGHTS about your circumstance determine how you feel.In this episode, I explore the importance of choosing your thoughts wisely. I show you how choosing your thoughts can help you change your opinion about your body for the better.WANT TO WORK WITH ME ONE ON ONE?Schedule a free no-pressure consultation now. In this episode, I talk about the importance of forgiving yourself. Forgive yourself for overeating. Forgive yourself for binge eating. Forgive yourself for gaining weight. Girl, you are not alone! Do you ever wonder if your eating habits are normal or maybe there's a problem. It's possible you just overeat. But it's also possible that you are a binger. Binge eating is a HUGE topic that could never be covered in one or two or even six episodes, nor would I ever attempt to tackle some root issues alone. I've asked binge expert Jane Pilger to join me on this episode. It's REAL talk and RAW at sometimes. When I started this podcast, I wanted it to be unedited and organic. This episode is a truly one of those episodes, I found myself tongue tied, misspoken and this episode has many flaws in it. But its REAL and keeping it that way. Once you've listened to this episode and if you still are unclear if you have a binging problem, I highly encourage you to follow Jane on all her socials, take her free master classes and even do a coaching session with her. Sister, you need to know what you are dealing with when you start to fight this war. Find Jane here, Get on her email list and register for her masterclasses. Even if you are not a binger, you will get a nugget or two from this episode. Normally I give you a quick 30 minute or less episode, but this one was just too important to cut short. Jane has even agreed to come back on in a few months to hit a few more topics that we didn't cover. I found many tools along with proper nutrition that has gotten me to a healthy weight. I still work daily on a healthy mind and hope you do as well. Keep journaling, keep digging in and keep fueling your body appropriately and you'll win this war. Glenn Livingston, PhD, author of Never Binge Again, shares his unique method that helped him and thousands help stop binge eating and emotional eating once and for all. If you struggle with overeating, emotional eating, food addiction, or binge eating disorder, this interview will give you ideas and inspiration to gain control over your food habits. Here's what we cover in this interview: The rule that started Dr. Livingston's end to binge eating. Why “loving yourself thin” often doesn't work for overeating. The parts of the brain you NEED to know about for overeating. Vital information why we can't love our way out of an addiction - those two parts of the brain don't work well together. Why some food companies are taking money OUT of the nutrient-density of food and INTO colorful and creative marketing. What your salt, sugar, and starchy food cravings tell you about your underlying emotions. Are you lonely, stressed at work, or stressed at home? How Glen discovered his “inner pig” and how this concept changed his life. Are there actual differences between overeating and food addiction? What percentage of people who struggle with overeating can regulate their “trigger foods” versus needing to abstain from them completely?CoachingIf you're ready to lose the weight for good, you've come to the right place!Join our online insulin resistance weight loss program, Zivli, to learn the science behind weight loss and habit change so you can lose weight, get healthy, and prevent disease. Admitting she hasn't had a whole lot of luck with love, Christine continues to navigate the murky waters of "online dating" in recovery and amidst a global pandemic (yikes). Being bullied as a young girl, FAT has been removed from her vocabulary, and replaced with a gentler word... plump. She knew at a young age, she would "show them" how she wasn't fat, and began her obsession with extreme exercise and dieting. According to ANAD, at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. No matter what type of addiction you have, it’s difficult to confront when you’ve hit rock bottom and are in desperate need for a change. Today’s guest is Ryan Duff, the winner of Switch4Good’s recent contest that asked listeners to submit their own stories of overcoming personal challenges. Ryan is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he’s overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet. They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of veganism for your physical and mental health. Plus, find out where you can get Bee Free Honee, made from apple juice, and Alexandra’s favorite caramel-tasting Bahri dates. After you listen to Ryan’s inspiring story, check out the Switch4Godd blog to read more about his path to recovery. What we discuss in this episode: - What inspired Ryan to fully commit to a plant-based diet - Ryan’s relationship with food growing up and how he succumbed to an eating disorder - What The Lost Connections and Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari can teach us about addiction and depression - How the books Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen and Rational Recovery by Jack Trimpey helped Ryan conquer his eating disorder - Ryan’s path to recovery, his daily nutrition plan and meal tips for runners - The status of the medical field in terms of knowledge about nutrition and how Ryan plans to shift people’s mindset about the benefits of eating a plant-based diet - Follow Ryan Duff on Instagram at @unleashtheduff or on Twitter at @ryanduff11. We’re talking about labels and diagnoses, both the ones we give to ourselves, the ones we try on from Dr. Google, and the ones given to us by others. We discuss how they can be helpful, but also how they can be hurtful, and how to keep yours from hurting you.

It probably makes sense to you to label yourself as a binge eater. You do binge eat, right? But here's the question to consider: does it serve you to label yourself that way? Whether it's true or not that you binge eat, how you label yourself is a choice and it's one that will cause you to feel a certain way about yourself. What you think about what you do matters. In this episode, I'm showing you the effect this label has on you, how it might be perpetuating your binge eating, and other options for how you can acknowledge this problem in your life that won't cause such shame and embarrassment.
YOUR INNER BINGE EATER IS ON YOUR SIDE WITH EATING PSYCHOLOGY AND BINGE EATING COACH, MELISSA RICCARDI. It's been amazing to me since I graduated from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating what a huge variety of teachers and coaches I meet. Some who are amazing and some who's approaches I don't care for at all and each with their own focus whether it be on weight loss or intuitive eating or emotional eating but today's guest is someone who feels like a true sister in this eating psychology coach community - our perspectives are so similar but of course she has plenty to share that I don't and I'm thrilled to share her no-nonsense but super warm and loving approach to binge eating disorder with you here. If you've listened to a few episodes, you'll know that I always tie things up with the question "what is your definition of a free spirit" and while I love Melissa's answer, we got to messaging about it later and she added this. She said me "A free spirit to me symbolizes going back to our child selves. Children are explorers, curious observers, wonderers. They have no judgements, they see everything through fresh eyes and are amazed by everything and anything. Ryan Sheldon is the blogger behind Confessions of a Binge Eater. He’s bravely and openly shared his experiences with binge eating disorder (BED) as he’s navigated recovery. His presence in the blogosphere is shining an important light on how men are affected by eating disorders, despite predominant stereotypes about eating disorder sufferers. In this interview, Ryan and I go deep on what binge eating disorder actually looks like. He really opens up about the day-to-day machinations of the disorder, what a binge episode looks like, and the ways in which it becomes difficult to function when you’re a highly progressed binge eater. BED is a pretty new disorder, relative to other eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia that we’ve been hearing about for years. And yet, BED is the most prominent eating disorder and it’s highly prevalent among men. Ryan’s bravery in opening up this dialogue is doing so much good for the ED community, and for all of us in opening our eyes to what this disease looks like! And his ability to rise above his past issues in recovery is an inspiration to us all. Key takeaways: Ryan’s experience with binge eating The stigma against men who share their experiences with eating disorders The ways in which Ryan’s binge eating was overlooked by healthcare providers for years The difference between being someone who likes food and a clinical binge eater The common misperception about what eating disorders look like. Specifically, higher weight and normal weight people suffer from eating disorders too! It’s not just skinny white chicks. Body dysmorphia and the role it’s played in Ryan’s own experience What binge eating disorder looks like, in terms of Ryan’s interactions with food The importance of mindfulness in the recovery process How harmful media stereotypes about our bodies and dieting can be in encouraging unhealthy, disordered behavior around food and weight control Why dieting and medical intervention aren’t the answer, and dealing with the mental and emotional drivers behind binge eating is Binge eating as an act of rebellion How to bring up tough conversations about self-harming with food with your loved ones Mentioned in this episode: DC NEDA Walk, March 25, 2018 Ryan’s blog, Confessions of a Binge Eater Ryan’s Instagram Ryan’s new YouTube project, Mr. Confessions Share the Body Love! In this podcast, Tabitha has a chat to Ryan Sheldon. Ryan talks about how he first discovered that he had binge eating disorder (BED), how it impacted his life and his mental health, and how he progressed through treatment. In this podcast, we discuss: Binge Eating Disorder from a sufferer's perspective Cultural implications of being a man with an eating disorder The behaviors and thought patterns associated with Binge Eating Disorder The importance of speaking out and seeking support The effects of treatment What recovery looks like for Ryan About Ryan Ryan Sheldon is founder of Confessions of a Binge Eater, a blog he created to share about his journey with Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Ryan hopes his story will help others suffering from BED overcome shame and embarrassment. In particular, Ryan provides a voice for the many men struggling eating disorders while encouraging them to get help. Ryan used to spend his days thinking about food, planning for it, and indulging in it. For years, he justified this by calling it “emotional eating” until he realized his love affair with food was spiraling out of control. Ryan was diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder, an illness characterized by compulsive overeating. Since then, he has made it his mission to not only overcome BED but to inspire others to do the same.
