Kathryn Hansen changed my life. I don't say that lightly, but her book Brain over Binge helped me confront, come to terms with and ultimately start recovery from an eating disorder I didn't even realise I had. You see, binge eating disorders tend to go undiagnosed and actually impact more people combined than the better-known anorexia nervosa and anorexia bulimia. It can be easily dismissed as gluttony, laziness, greed and a whole host of other negative labels that nobody really wants to wear. Still, it is a recognised emotional/mental illness that can be supported with treatments, including counselling.I had lived in shame for years since I was a child and my weight tipped over into the obese category at the doctors, so I began a relationship with food that was secret, feast or famine and co-dependent and which led my body to look and feel a way I didn't want it to.In this episode, four years after reading Kathryn's book and being able to install lifestyle changes that have changed my relationship with food forever, we discuss the muddy topic of what it's like to feel dependent on and powerless around food.To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now. Next, we create awareness around the triggers, the linked thought patterns, and the emotions and traumas that trigger us to turn toward food as a coping mechanism. When people hear the phrase ‘emotional eating', there's a tendency to associate it with crying over a tub of Ben & Jerries, or stress-munching your way through a pack of cookies. While it's common for people to turn to food for comfort as a way to cope with big, difficult feelings, there are many other situations where we might find ourselves eating emotionally. Have you ever attended a dinner where you end up having dessert just because everyone else is? Have you celebrated someone's birthday and eaten a slice of cake despite being full? Have you snacked on something when you've been bored at work? These are some prime examples of how normalized emotional eating is in our society, but the impact it has on our mental and physical health can be detrimental. So how can we begin to tackle the problem of eating when we're not physically hungry? In this episode, I'm walking you through the four phases of healing emotional eating and giving you five practical steps, from nutrition to mindset, that will help to get your emotional eating more under control.ReferencesFind out more about binge eating coach Jane Pilger's principles here.Listen to Kathryn Hansen's ‘Brain over Binge' podcast here.Learn more about Jessie Inchauspé's book ‘Glucose Revolution: The Life-Changing Power of Balancing Your Blood Sugar'.Pull Quotes “In the beginning, expecting that you're only going to eat when you're hungry and that everything's going to go perfectly and you're going to have no emotional eating, you're really setting yourself up for failure. [TW//Eating disorders, Bulimia, Binge Eating, Anxiety, Body Image, Suicide] 1.25 million people in the UK struggle with eating disorders such as bulimia and binge eating. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental health conditions. Suicide is the major cause of death, with those suffering with bulimia 7 x more likely to commit suicide. Today I welcome Kelly Wenham who is an accomplished actress, voice over artist, writer and director. At the age of 16, she landed the role of Jess Buckley on the smash hit ITV drama 'Where The Heart Is' which she appeared as a series regular for 4 years and has been working in the industry ever since. Kelly's journey starts as a teenager landing a modelling opportunity in Japan that triggers a slow and dangerous decent into chronic bulimia that nearly takes her life on more than one occasion. Kelly spends her twenties in and out of recovery desperately looking for a solution that seems out of reach. She never gives up despite her struggles and finally finds a solution that works for her to break free. Kelly is a bulimia survivor, a hero and an inspiration. I cannot thank Kelly enough for opening up so honestly to help others. If you are affected by the sensitive content or are looking for useful resources, Kelly recommends contacting Julie Kerr @ www.bulimiafree.com and the following books
Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge is joining us for today's episode to talk about the 8 most common ways our mind tries to justify binge eating. Binge eating is one of those things that can make any bad situation worse, but that's not what our mind tries to convince us of in the moment, right? No matter how many times we muster the resolve to say “never again”, when struggling with binge eating, it can start to feel like when urges get strong, our mind comes up with a seemingly reasonable reason to justify a binge. So that's what Kathryn and I are talking about today!Strong Not Starving Workshop Pack: https://www.mkaincoaching.com/strong-not-starving-formBrain Over Binge on Instagram: https://instagram.com/brain_over_binge?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=M. Many people who've struggled with binge eating for a long time have come across the book "Brain Over Binge" by Kathryn Hansen. Sarah and Stef, co-hosts, both read the book as they tried to recover and are discussing how the method landed for them. The episode looks into: Stef's history and experience with reading BOB and taking the official BOB course Sarah's experience of “looking forward to” the next binge urge to learn a new response. Dismissal of urges as irresponsible – what if those messages from the primal brain are valid, asks Stef Weight and eating as pathological Minimization (demonization?) of conventional therapy Do some personality types find this approach easier than others? Sarah's use of RALIC to ride out binge urges - but not with the goal of not bingeing itself. What if giving yourself permission to binge does NOT feel okay? Does it work to delay a binge? I briefly discuss a book I've been pouring over to continue in my freedom over emotional and binge eating. “Brain Over Binge Recovery Guide” by Kathryn Hansen
In this episode, I talk about the unconscious mind... how I used to see it when I was struggling with binge eating and bulimia, compared to how I see it now. I talk about what I've learned about the evolution of the psychology world's definition of the unconscious, and how the old model seemed to trickle down into the less-helpful recovery advice that I got. Long before I launched this podcast, I knew I wanted to bring the topic Disordered Eating to my platform. Kathryn Hansen is my guest today and she is the author of ‘Brain Over Binge' a book that completely transformed my mindset around food. Kathryn suffered from an Eating Disorder and was able to free herself from this disease by creating her own unique approach. I can promise you that hers is radically different than anything you've ever heard before and I can't wait for you to hear what she has to say. In this episode we chat about her story and how she started out innocently trying to control her weight in high school, a time when we all feel self-conscious about our bodies. Over time, simple diets gave way to restricted eating which became a habit and eventually an uncontrollable desire to binge. When therapy failed to help her with her binge eating she decided to start digging into the neuroscience behind how the brain works and what she could do to harness that power of her brain to essentially rewire those habits and control the urges. Through years of research and trial + error she finally found lasting succcess and was able to beat the binge and decided to write a book to help others who were struggling. I discovered her book nearly a decade ago when I was also struggling with an ED and it totally shifted my mindset and changed my life. If you or someone you know is struggling with an ED please listen to this episode and visit her website to purchase her book or download her FREE audiobook. Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge, joins me on the podcast today to discuss: Processing an Urge Exercise in Recovery Believing Recovery is Possible & More. So excited to have her on. She was the first person that introduced me to the idea that binging was not just inherently me. That it could be coming from a habitual place instead. While I would recover for years after reading her book, Brain Over Binge was one of the major catalysts in my recovery.

The subject of when the best time is to take steps to improve our relationship with food or recover from an eating disorder comes up a lot when I'm listening to people who reach out to me wanting to make changes. So today I'm really stoked to say that Kathryn Hansen, Author of Brain Over Binge is joining us here again to talk about whether or not there really is such a thing as the best time to begin recovery, and how things like stress or a high workload can influence our approach to the journey.
Kathryn Hansen, author of Brain Over Binge, joins me in this episode to talk about her experience with binge eating, and how conventional therapy wasn't the answer. I struggled with bulimia and binge eating disorder for about 15 years, between the ages of 15 and 30, and during that time I did reach out for help and get therapy, but can't say it was conventional therapy that brought an end to my eating disorder. This is something that Kathryn talks about extensively in her incredible book, Brain Over Binge. I'm absolutely thrilled to bring you this conversation, and extremely grateful to Katheryn for taking this time to spend with us.Thanks for tuning in!Marcus Kain

Everyone should have a friend like Sarah Rentfro in their life. The best way to describe Sarah is to point to a description based on her Enneagram Type, which is a 9. From Truity: Peacemakers are social chameleons who can adapt to the group dynamic easily and help others get along. They’re soft-spoken yet loyal and fun to be around, intuitively knowing how to include and engage everyone in conversation. Peacemakers are cooperative and always willing to let someone join the circle and state their own opinions. Soft-spoken yet firm in their personal stances, they make an effort to neutralize tension and restore group harmony. Easygoing and willing to tolerate everyone, Peacemakers retain their self-esteem through being kind and helpful to others. They enjoy the comfortable side of life and may have a personal space to recharge from the outer world. Many are deep seekers of meaning and have a fond appreciation of spirituality and a sense of connectedness with the universe. Jill Devine met Sarah a couple of years ago. At the time, Sarah helped with the children’s ministry at the church Jill and Sarah attend, Messiah Lutheran. Jill actually referenced Sarah in Episode 46: Dealing With Depression and Anxiety, Having Jesus In Your Life, and Seeking The Still with Laura Fleetwood because Laura and Sarah are sisters. There’s often talk about social media and the negative side of it, but Sarah’s social media accounts are the exact opposite. She takes simple things, like baby carrots, and her viewpoint makes people literally laugh out loud. As with most people, there is a side to Sarah that is complex and not something she really likes to share on social media. Sarah was (and very much still is) recovering from a binge eating disorder. So many of the things Jill and Shannon Buescher talked about in Episode 30 (Part One) Women Face the Cultural Message “Thin Is Better” Every Day and Episode 30 (Part Two) We Are Taught We’re Successful If Our Body Gets Smaller were the things Sarah was dealing with every single day. Sarah had a binge eating disorder and the day after she read Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen, she quit binging. Sarah is now trying to focus on body neutrality and “living in the middle”. New to Season 4, the Supermom Shoutout! Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Amy of O’Fallon, MO! Her best friend, Michelle, nominated her and said: Hi Jill! My best friend, Amy, is a Supermom! She’s a single mom, going to school to get her Master’s, works for Sacred Groundz coffee truck (she’s actually a founder of that company), she volunteers for our church, Peace Lutheran, and she helps me with all my volunteer projects. Her daughter, Kylie, is absolutely amazing! She does gymnastics and just started Girl Scouts. Kylie keeps Amy pretty busy, yet Amy is able to do everything I listed and do it well. Amy – YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. It's been a year since I had breast reduction surgery and when I decided to have this operation I thought it was going to be life-changing, but it wasn't.It turns out that if I wanted to change my life, undo self-sabotaging behaviours and really address my issues with my own body image, it wasn't something I could outsource - this needed to be an inside job. So, that's what the last 12 months have been about confronting and addressing demons, being honest with myself and making changes for my long-term mental, emotional and physical health.I'm made this video/audio because I receive messages daily about my breast reduction surgery, but in recent months I've been also been receiving messages about my weight loss, in the main along the lines of ‘how have you done it?' and it feels impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other. If you do have questions about breast reduction surgery or anything else discussed in this video please do feel free to comment or please know that my DMs are open.Trigger warning: I am aware that some of what I have mentioned in this video may be triggering for some viewers. It is never my intention to create content that will upset, offend or alienate, but this is the only way I knew how to articulate my own personal journey and I hope you don't mind me using my platform to do so. The author, Kathryn Hansen, candidly shares her experience as a bulimic and her alternative approach to recovery. Brain over Binge is different than other eating disorder books which typically present binge eating and purging as symptoms of complex emotional and psychological problems. Kathryn disputes this mainstream idea and explains why traditional eating disorder therapy failed her and fails many. She explains how she came to understand her bulimia in a new way – as a function of her brain, and how she used the power of her brain to recover – quickly and permanently. Kathryn also sheds new light on eating disorder topics such as low self-esteem, poor body image, and dieting. Brain over Binge is a brave book that will help many by delivering an informed and inspiring message of free will, self-reliance, and self-control. According to ANAD, at least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the United States. No matter what type of addiction you have, it’s difficult to confront when you’ve hit rock bottom and are in desperate need for a change. Today’s guest is Ryan Duff, the winner of Switch4Good’s recent contest that asked listeners to submit their own stories of overcoming personal challenges. Ryan is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he’s overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet. They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of veganism for your physical and mental health. As we all know, "abs are made in the kitchen", meaning that if you want to see results, you'll always have to pay attention to what you eat. But what if all the tracking and counting drives you crazy? You're definitely not alone, and this is when you should turn to mindfulness. So if you want to make mindful eating a habit for a beneficial long-term change, press play to learn about the resources you should use! Three Things You Will Learn1) How To Build Up Your Mindful Eating Knowledge BaseBefore jumping straight on to the mindful eating wagon, you should build a thorough understanding of what mindful eating really is. And to do this, what better resources could we recommend than some other fantastic podcasts out there? The first addition to your library should be the Brain over Binge podcast by Kathryn Hansen. And the episode you should aim for is #42 The power of mindfulness in binge eating. In this episode, Kathryn interviews someone who used to struggle with binge eating for a long time and managed to finally overcome it with the help of mindfulness. The next one on your playlist should be the Technology for Mindfulness podcast that introduces a range of topics where mindfulness can help you. The host doesn't just "explore the intersection between mindfulness and technology", but also interviews experts in the field of mindfulness, who all share their tips & tricks. Finally, to learn more about various cues that can signal hunger and fullness, you should press play on the Just Eat It podcast! In every episode, the host, Laura Thomas, will help you build a more meaningful relationship with food and teach how to stay on top of your intuitive eating game. 2) Guided Through Mindful EatingOnce you feel like you get it all, you can actually move on to practicing mindful eating. While some might argue that technology takes away the whole point of mindfulness, at the first stages of your practice, it won't hurt to use some mindfulness apps for guidance.Smiling Mind is one of the most popular ones, with a massive database of mindfulness programs designed to deal with challenges in all fields of your life. After creating a profile, go in the "Find 10 minutes for your mind" category and look for the mindful eating session. This will help you take the first steps on your mindful eating journey! If you're looking for something longer-lasting, you can turn to the famous Headspace app. Headspace has a 30-day long mindful eating course that will explain to you why we eat the way we do and what drives our different choices when it comes to food. During this course, you'll also learn various techniques, such as "body scan" & "noting", which will be helpful in the mindfulness journey ahead of you.Listen to this week's episode to find out more about the mindfulness apps, their features and decide which one will suit your needs the most!3) How To Hack Mindful EatingFor those who feel like actively practicing mindfulness is not their thing, there's another way around incorporating mindful eating into your routine. And it's all about getting to know your body and your state of mind. With the help of Spire Health Tag, a tiny tracker, you will be able to learn everything about your daily activity and how you feel deep inside. After you clip a Spire Health Tag on your clothes, it will start tracking your workouts, HR, and breath/min.Based on these data, Spire will provide you with insights on things like your sleep quality and stress level throughout the day. Press play and learn how you'll be able to use these insights in becoming more mindful in your everyday life!

Betsy Thurston MPH RD talks about the approach to recovery that was presented in the book , "Brain Over Binge" by Kathryn Hansen. In this book the theory is that we absolutely have control over binge eating and that sometimes more in-depth therapy is unnecessary. Betsy talks about the key points in this book and how these ideas compare to other more common recovery models.
After a terrible case of food poisoning or stomach flu, I let go of knowing what to expect from my body and assuming I know what it needs. I'll be on call again for jury duty next week (postponed due to my illness) and may not be online. Thank you to a new Coffee Klatcher for supporting the show with virtual coffee and to BC Sandy for recording our shared bonus show last week. We hear some of the comment reactions to that show from Cheryl, Dawny, Amy from WI and Sandy. Foolish Fun from Dawny. Participate in the show with different audio possibilities. We greet new BCs Allie from FB and Dave’s wife, Kathleen. An awesome new song recommendation for the Latin bilingual band, Moona Luna sent by BC Dave. María from a Spanish Speaking country goes on the bravery report for revealing just WHICH Spanish Speaking country she’s from. BC Happy reveals how she’s doing and what she thinks of Kathryn Hansen’s book, Brain Over Binge. My riff about hunger, binges, self awareness and all of the different attributes we juggle when finding tools and methods to help US find our own unique ways.
It's a blustery day on the mountain, and despite the wind, today's show is all about the BCs! After I let go of the idea of trying and embrace the idea of being, I welcome a record number of new brave companions - Chelsea, Dave and his wife, Jo, Nola from Alberta, Rachel from Sydney, Justine and Devon. I thank Nola for her 5 star review on iTunes Canada. We catch up with a few BCs we haven't heard from for awhile, including Happy who has questions for us about binge durations and what we think of Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen. We also hear from Lisa, Maria from a Spanish Speaking country and my in person BC pal, Sandy. We celebrate the bravery of BC Carol from Detroit for posting her story on Who are the Brave Companions. We also feature comments on that story by Dawny and Sue from the UK. Amy from WI shares why I asked for prayers for her last show and Stéfanie from Quebec tells us why she's been quiet of late.
