More than you think. I share the stats, the mindset shift that changes everything, and how we can use Maester Carr's wisdom to step into more freedom and fewer food regrets. I also give you an update on my Pacific Crest Trail training (the blisters are real!) and talk about how I plan for my joy eats—and why that makes all the difference.  This one is part insight, part inspiration, and all about reclaiming your agency, one intentional decision at a time. Tune in and let's walk this path together!Quote of the Week:“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – by Mahatma GandhiLet's go, let's get it done. Today we have Alyssa. She is 30 years old from Vancouver, WA and took her last drink on September 5th, 2024.   Sponsors for this episode include: Better Help – 10% off of your first month Sober Link –   Next Monday, our five-week course called Ditching the Booze. This is our alcohol-free 101 crash course and is included with Café RE membership. All sessions are live and you're tuning in with others who are in the same spot as you. The sessions are also recorded in case you can't attend.   On Tuesday, April 1st, registration opens for our flagship retreat in Bozeman which is always a lot of fun. In addition to our lake hangout, breathwork and recovery workshops, we're also playing laser tag.   [03:20] Thoughts from Paul:   Today Paul talks about why alcohol can be so hard to quit, why the process of quitting can take years and can contain many stops and starts.   Addiction guru Gabor Mate says, “addictions are always a human response to pain, suffering and trauma”. We are constantly in search of homeostasis. When we find something effective at helping us find this relief, it becomes our first technique to use when we are in pain. After drinking long enough, you'll get to the point where you only feel good, or dopamine will only be created when we are drinking.   It takes time after quitting drinking for our body to naturally create dopamine on its own. You will need to learn new routines, create new habits and figure out a way to fill the time that used to be spent drinking. Paul shares with us several other reasons quitting drinking is hard.   Why do you think quitting drinking is so hard? Comment on RE's Instagram page. There's a post for today's episode.   [09:02] Paul introduces Alyssa:   Alyssa lives in Vancouver, WA with her fiancé and two Rotskis. She currently works as a server and in her free time she enjoys reading and traveling with her fiancé. They are currently trying to determine where they are going to move to be closer to family.   Alyssa says she had an early introduction to alcohol but never really considered it an issue until she met her fiancé who doesn't drink. For years, everyone around her drank so she didn't notice her own drinking.   Alyssa's drinking increased slowly but became daily during the pandemic. In 2021 she read Easy Way to Quit Drinking by Allen Carr and was able to stop for a few months.   For Alyssa, her drinking began to create an inner turmoil, and it started to erode her confidence because she was making promises to herself and then breaking them by drinking instead of accomplishing her goals. After quitting for a period of time, Alyssa thought that she would be able to moderate. In time, she says, she was right back where she was.   After moving in with her father while they save up to find their own place, Alyssa says the lack of goals and uncertainty of the future found her drinking more to cope. She was no longer active and was losing self-esteem while anxiety and depression took hold. At the bottom of her heart, Alyssa knew that eliminating alcohol would help fix the way she was feeling.   Alyssa chose a quit date and started seeking sober podcasts and books to prepare, including This Naked Mind. It was after a night out with friends that Alyssa told her fiancé that she didn't want to drink anymore. He was very supportive of her decision and offered to help however he could.   Alyssa continued to read This Naked Mind and participated in a 30-day sober challenge. This paired with the liberation she felt from her decision led to a pink cloud experience for Alyssa. Anxiety and depression started to lift quickly. Going forward, she is trying to figure out what she wants to do in the future, and she believes in sobriety the options are endless.   Alyssa's parting piece of guidance: Just listen to that little voice. Give sobriety as many chances as you gave alcohol.       Recovery Elevator Rule 22: lighten up - let's do our best not to take ourselves too seriously. In this week's episode, we delve into Allen Carr's influential work, "Allen Carr's EasyEasy Way to Stop Smoking." This episode unpacks the psychological and social constructs that perpetuate smoking addiction and explores Carr's revolutionary approach to quitting smoking without relying on willpower. I will also share my own experience of getting free from both nicotine and alcohol and explain the inspiration behind the episode. We discuss how smokers are often misled into believing that smoking provides pleasure, when in reality, it merely relieves the withdrawal symptoms from the last cigarette, creating a cycle of dependency. We'll also explore the concept of brainwashing in smoking addiction, where societal and psychological conditioning makes quitting seem impossible. Carr's method focuses on changing smokers' perspectives, debunking the myths that smoking is a crutch or provides genuine pleasure. By addressing these misconceptions, Carr argues that quitting becomes not only achievable but surprisingly easy. Join us as we dissect the reasons why willpower alone is often insufficient and how understanding the true nature of smoking can fundamentally change the quitting process. I hope that this episode will be the beginning of your vice-free life! I trust that this episode, will prove beneficial to you, your loved ones, and the broader world. As always, I will be sharing several thought-provoking concepts for you to ponder and apply in real-life scenarios in the upcoming days. The word is out. What's next?

His new book ‘Real Men Quit' is out in December. Duncan shares his own experiences of battles with addiction, particularly, alcohol including what made him decide to stop and methods he used to lead a more rewarding life.He explores how we live in a world full of illusions of truth, and there are many illusions of truth about alcohol if you look at the motivational triad we're basically designed as humans to maximize pleasure, minimize pain, and minimize the expenditure of energy. And if you look at the delusions that are out there around alcohol, the world will tell you that alcohol increases your pleasure. It doesn't. It will tell you it reduces your pain. It doesn't. And it will tell you the best thing to do is sit on the sofa after a hard day's work and drink a glass of wine, which is, of course, minimizing energy expenditure. He also discusses how to recognise if you or someone close to you is drinking too much, how to address the problem, and the support options available from self-help to cognitive therapy to Alcoholics Anonymous.  If you want to find out more about Duncan or to contact him directly visit his website: https://www.bhaskaranbrown.com/.You can also buy his book Get Over Indulgence, or pre-order his new book Real Men Quit on Amazon:Duncan also referenced a few self-help books: Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol. This Naked Mind: The myth-busting cult hit for anyone who wants to cut down their alcohol consumption. More About William Porter:"I started drinking and smoking when I was around 14 years old. In my late teens, in an attempt to stop smoking, I read Allen Carr's Easyway. I was fascinated by his pragmatic and practical approach to what was a confusing and complicated subject. Over the years my drinking steadily increased but I continued to take a common sense analysis of what it was doing to me, coupled with a technical analysis of the chemical, physiological and psychological factors at play. This continued for over a quarter of a century, during which I joined the 4th (Reserve) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, served a 6 month tour of Iraq, qualified as a lawyer, started a career in the Financial Services sector of the City of London, got married, and had children. My drinking continued to increase until, in February 2014, I finally stopped for good. I now live with my wife and two children in West London, and continue to work as a lawyer. Episode 442 – Time to Breathe   Today we have Jeff, he is 35 from Salt Lake City, UT and had his last drink on April 6th, 2023.   Shout out to the Café RE chat hosts. Thank you for continuing to hold space for our community and for creating an environment where we can come together and heal.   Go Brewing. Use the code ELEVATOR for 15% off.   [03:46] Highlights from Kris:   Kris finds sober anniversaries a good opportunity to reflect on where he was and where he is today. He asks himself questions such as “What have I gone through? How have I been able to meet the challenges placed in front of me? Am I moving in the direction I want to in my life?”   In active addiction Kris was not able to show love to himself. He knew that the things he was doing were hurting other people and himself. He knew his wife, kids, parents, and friends all loved him, but he couldn't let the love in. He was stuck in the loop of “I'm not enough, I've screwed up too much, I deserve to feel this way.”   If you're listening, and you're there today, know that you are not alone. Many of us have been there and know how hard it is.    We don't have to be perfect RE… that's never going to happen. All we have to be is willing. We have to be willing to be honest with where we are today. Without judgement, where are things in our life right now? What is the next right thing to step into our new future? Where can we find support? Don't worry about trying to resolve every issue in your life all at once. Just take little bites.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored   [09:40] Kris introduces Jeff:   At the time of recording, Jeff is celebrating 90 days of sobriety and plans to celebrate with cacao.  He is 35 and lives in Salt Lake City with his wife and two dogs. For fun Jeff enjoys mountain biking, skiing, running, and music is a big part of his life.   Growing up, alcohol was always present at celebrations hosted by his parents and their friends. It was normal for him to see people drink to excess. Jeff's first drink was when he was 16 with some friends and stolen rum. Early on he recognized that his drinking was different than other people's. On the outside, he was successful at school but was suffering from depression that alcohol helped him escape from.   After high school Jeff went to the east coast to play hockey for two years. This required a lot of discipline, so Jeff's drinking was limited to one day each week. He never moderated and usually ended up blacking out.   When Jeff turned 20, he started college where he played hockey and studied engineering. During his freshman year he got a bad concussion and struggled a lot with the side effects afterwards. He initially used drinking to self-medicate the side effects but drinking started to become the answer to everything.   After college Jeff moved back to Alaska for a job. He had his own place with two roommates who he frequently drank with late into the night. He was able to keep up with work and other activities so in spite of some health consequences, he didn't feel he had a problem.   Jeff started questioning his drinking after he caught himself drinking and driving frequently. He found Allen Carr's book and was able to stop drinking for 11 days. Since then, he has been in the cycle of quitting and then starting back with different lengths of time between drinks.   Therapy has been helpful for Jeff over the last three years and his wife has been very supportive. Connection has become very important to him.   Jeff's plan in recovery moving forward: moving forward with integrity and owning who he is.   Jeff's parting piece(s) of guidance: it's ok if you think this is hard because it is hard. I didn't want to go to work. Jaz's Introduction:Do you remember practicing dentistry when you had a cold or you weren't feeling well? Well, you must remember how difficult that was, right? Because dentistry is such a stressful thing. We're dealing with people's emotions all day long. We're dealing with intricate procedures in small places, so when you're not feeling your best. Man, that adds even more to an already stressful profession. There are various times in our careers that we will enter a rough patch. Now, before I give you examples of this, I want to give a warning for this episode that this episode does contain a lot of triggers that might upset some listeners. We tackled some very dark themes in this podcast episode. My guest, who is a dental professional, discusses episodes of self-harm, divorce, excessive alcohol intake. And these are the kind of themes that we'll be discussing under the broader umbrella of difficult, rough patches that we may face as professionals. And the reason why you made this episode today is to help anyone who's listening who may be. Going through a rough patch and of course will. It's inevitable. We will all go through rough patches. We'll all have an argument one day. We won't be feeling our best every day. I don't feel my best every day, despite what you guys might think, right? I have bad patches. Everyone has bad patches. This is life and we need the resilience to navigate through those bad patches. A lot of talk nowadays, more and more, which is brilliant about mental health, looking after your mental health. So I'm hoping this episode will help someone, will inspire someone. If it helps just one person, it is worth it. Because of the nature of this episode,

Selected Key Takeaways: The Overcoming MS Program empowers and informs people to make positive lifestyle changes 03:02 “[Professor] Jelinek's voice really spoke to me like I'm a relatively intelligent adult. It was the first time I heard ideas like ‘follow this very healthy evidence-based lifestyle program, and still take your DMT with your neurologist's guidance, if that's a good fit for you.' It was also the first time I felt like I had a say in my health, in my approach to my MS.” Grieving your former self can be an important step in making healthy changes 04:02 “I discovered the concept of grieving for the loss of my former self and finding the new me. That concept really resonated with me. In a lot of ways, I actually saw it as a really positive thing. Through that I embraced dietary, exercise and mindfulness initiatives fully. Through the process of discovering who this new me is, I made a lot of decisions to cut out toxic elements from my life, whether that's food and lifestyle related, people, or even something like social media. Overcoming MS was a major factor in helping all this.” Find the method that works for you to quit smoking 07:40 “I really struggled for about two years with smoking. Whereas [with] my drinking, getting that under control was actually almost easy and immediate in comparison. It feels like I tried everything to quit before I got a handle on it, which included things like tracking every time I smoked, and then trying to reduce the number of times each day, going cold turkey, reading about how horrible smoking is for your health, the scare tactics, etc. All those things. At the end of the day, I actually found Allen Carr's ‘Easy Way to Stop Smoking.' That book really worked for me.” Want to learn more about living a full and happy life with multiple sclerosis? The Mindset of a Drinker: Alcohol Explained with Author William Porter

William is an ex-drinker and author, he joins Dan in this episode to talk about his first book, Alcohol Explained, a no-nonsense and practical explanation of alcohol; what it is, what it does and why we drink. As well as William's book, Dan and William discuss their journeys to sobriety, their experiences of drinking and anxiety as well as the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent. CHECK OUT DAPPERS upcoming tour for 2024! https://mailchi.mp/ace6a476059d/9gd0kepamf?fbclid=PAAaaXZR8FL3fSrSgJtW0d5MGmbiACX1wz9siu18hKKMOrqDP60nPPpalRk24 KEY TAKEAWAYS  William was inspired to create his book Alcohol Explained, after reading the practical and pragmatic style in Alan Carrs book Easy way to Stop Smoking. William started drinking at 14 but it was after signing up to the Army that his drinking really accelerated. Another thing that further escalated William's drinking was the pressure he felt after having children. Drinking alcohol is culturally normalised. It's the only ‘drug' that is legal and seen as ok to take. The sedative nature of alcohol is one of the reasons people reach for it first to help self-soothe. This is often where addiction starts. Alcohol affects our brain chemistry in a whole host of ways, this is one of the reasons we experience anxiety and depression. It also impacts sleep which again, can cause many mental problems and well as physical. The positives of stopping alcohol accrue over time, it can be hard to see the longer-term benefits when you first stop, especially as it's been such a big part of your life. Williams's book explains the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent, so it can and has been useful for those who don't have a problem to read to understand people close to them who do. BEST MOMENTS  “I think everyone drinks more as years go by but there were a couple of things that accelerated my drinking” “You focus heavily on the things that are wrong the next day” “The information is there but people, like you say, don't want to hear it” “If you feel really awful and you have a way to feel better, why is it irrational to take that?” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.alcoholexplained.com CONTACT METHOD Instagram Facebook Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST William Porter After quitting I started to realise that what allowed me to quit was the knowledge I had, so I (eventually!) wrote it all down. That was Alcohol Explained. After this I continued to ponder the subject and wrote regularly in my blog, that eventually became Alcohol Explained 2. I started drinking and smoking when I was around 14 years old. Upon seeing the responses from men around the world to some of the posts on the group he was blown away and continues to be touched by the kindness and support offered by strangers. This all led to Daniel wanting to start up his own podcast and invite guests to join him in opening up about past experiences and talk about all things mental health, family & sobriety.  The podcast will see Daniel and his interesting guests' sharing their personal stories and learning experiences that they hope will help other people; whether it encourages one person to ask for help, talk to family about their struggles with getting sober/clean, or realise that they aren't alone. Roll out the red carpet and grab a tub of Redenbacher's, because it's time to go to the movies. The Academy Awards are one of the most anticipated cinema celebrations in the world, so naturally, when the show seemed like it was losing its pizzazz, the producers need to find a way to spice things up again. And what better way to do that than to add in lavish production numbers, incongruous sketches, and appearances from some of the greatest stars of yesterday and tomorrow? Rob teaches Ray about the infamous 1989 Oscars, and its impact on the format the ceremony now follows; how Allen Carr's outrageous vision for a star-studded night of glitz and glamour became an overproduced nightmare; why the House of Mouse wasn't too pleased with Mr. Carr's opening number; and how the perception of this particular Oscars not only cratered Carr's career, but might have some redeeming qualities when viewed in the light of recent awards show flops and failures. If you like what we are doing, please support us on Patreon.TEAMRay HebelRobert W. How do you know if what you're experiencing is menopause related?  What if you're not ready to hear that it is menopause?  What if you don't have a womb so you don't have those obvious signals that your periods have ended? That's how it was for my 3rd MenoChat guest, Lyndsey Byrne. Having had a hysterectomy with very few symptoms, Lyndsey was convinced that when hot flushes and other symptoms started with a vengeance a few years later, there must have been something other than menopause going on, especially since her blood tests told her she was definitely NOT in menopause. Going to some pretty extreme measures to manage her symptoms including wrapping herself up in plastic and exercising hard to literally 'sweat' the hot flushes away, Lyndsay finally began to accept that menopause probably was at the core and decided to take a functional medicine approach to manage her symptoms. I'm a huge believer in finding your own way through this transition.  Every one of us will approach our symptoms differently and there's no 'one size fits all'.  And that's why it's so helpful to hear different approaches, different stories and different experiences.  Story sharing is an important part of how we can figure out what the right way forward is for us as we navigate menopause.  There's no one size fits all, and often hearing other people's experiences allows us the chance to take a different perspective.   So I'd love to invite all the women listening to come and join our amazing community in Your Best Midlife over on Facebook where you'll find over 1000 women sharing experiences, cheering each other on and building each other up so we can all thrive through midlife and beyond. PS:  the book that Lyndsey referred to is called Easy Way to Control Alcohol by Allen Carr
