The Legend of Korra: Season 1

Send us a textRepublic City stands at a crossroads. Seventy years after Avatar Aang ended the Hundred Year War, his successor Korra finds herself facing a threat unlike anything the world has seen before – a charismatic revolutionary who can permanently strip people of their bending abilities. This debut season of Legend of Korra brilliantly expands the Avatar universe through stunning animation, complex characters, and surprisingly mature themes. While many fans approach Korra with comparisons to The Last Airbender, we explore why this series deserves appreciation on its own merits. The show's gorgeous art-deco inspired visuals and fluid bending choreography represent a significant evolution in animation quality, creating fight scenes that remain breathtaking more than a decade after they first aired. What sets Legend of Korra apart is its willingness to let its protagonist fail repeatedly. Unlike Aang, who gradually mastered elements throughout his journey, Korra begins proficient in three elements but struggles with the spiritual side of being the Avatar. Her journey isn't about gaining power but understanding its purpose. When Amon successfully strips Korra of her bending abilities, the show makes a bold statement about vulnerability and resilience that resonates far beyond its target audience. The Equalist movement raises uncomfortable questions about privilege in the Avatar world. Are non-benders truly equal in a society where bending brings immense advantages? Amon's methods are extreme, but his movement's grievances aren't entirely unfounded. This moral complexity elevates the storytelling beyond simple hero-villain dynamics into something more thought-provoking.Whether you're revisiting Republic City or considering your first journey into Korra's world, this season offers a compelling, self-contained story while setting up threads that will evolve throughout the series. Listen as we break down why Legend of Korra deserves recognition as one of animation's most ambitious achievements – a show that respected its audience enough to tackle complex themes while delivering spectacular entertainment.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show

After the success of Avatar: The Last Airbender, show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko decided to tell the story of the next Avatar; headstrong 17-year-old Korra of the Southern Water Tribe. Set seventy years after the concluding events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra catapulted watchers into the future of The Four Nations to see the mark Team Avatar left on their world, including the creation of Republic City, Aang's crowning achievement. Premiering April 14th, 2012 on Nickelodeon, The Legend of Korra ran for four seasons and expanded upon the world and lore of Avatar in new and exciting ways. Clearly ahead of its time, The Legend of Korra was the first show on Nickelodeon not programmed for Nick at Nite to show a same-sex relationship. From representation, to the addition of futuristic tech and Pro-Bending, Legend of Korra found a way to entice both new and old fans alike. On today's episode, Jon, Scarlett, and Ashley enthusiastically venture once again to the Four Nations to discuss the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra. GC's own Team Avatar DO THE THING and dive into topics such as the show's surprisingly dark themes, the villains, comparisons between the two shows, how Nickelodeon really screwed over the creative team mid-way through the series' run, and more! The trio also discuss some of The Legend of Korra comics and the recent news surrounding Avatar Studios. Coincidentally, the studio announced its formation the week after our Avatar: The Last Airbender episode dropped. Whether you're a huge Avatar fan, or looking to discover more about it, today's episode is the perfect opportunity to explore this incredible world. Upon discovering her father's fortune is comprised of mafia blood money, Amanda Monroe sets out on a dark path to fiscally emancipate him from his illegal activities, any way possible. Narrator - Emmanuel Mendes-Chumaceiro Amanda Monroe - Shannon McDermott Arthur - Joseph Callari The Protector - Tom Proprofsky Robert O'Reilly - Heath Harper Benedict - Joe Finfera Carmen - Kelli Kickham Sully - Chris .R. Notarile A WORD FROM CHRIS The Wraith, like many of my BCU heroes started at out as a male character that I created in grade school. I was obsessed with the Batman Animated Series and loved the noir style of that show. Naturally, I created a character to embody that. Originally named the Darkness, the character was more of a legacy hero. A masked vigilante who looked like a cross between the Shadow and the Gray Ghost, that gets killed in the 50's, only to have his grandson discover his legacy decades later. That story element was eventually repurposed for the Avenger. When it came time to actually building the BCU, I knew I wanted to reintroduce the Darkness, but with a fresh take. Since the time I had created him, Top Cow comics had published their own Darkness title. The character was nothing like mine, but the name was now taken and I really didn't want to bother competing with a more established character. Also, I had come to realize the Darkness was kind of a weird thing to call yourself, and would sound odd when characters were addressing each other. I decided I wanted something, short, sweet and effective. I ultimately settled on the Wraith. It was an easy choice. As for who the Wraith was going to be- I knew I wanted the character to now be a woman, since I already had the Protector and Avenger running around Republic City. I felt having a female anti-hero rounding out the trio was the way to go, but I didn't want the character to present herself as female. I gave it some thought, and tried to get into the head of a woman in the 40's taking on the criminal underworld, and while female heroes in the 21st century can fair pretty well in striking fear into the hearts of modern men, back then, times were definitely different. Also, having an alter ego of a different gender really helps throw suspicion off oneself, and I thought that was a cool angle to include. I had grown up with Marilyn Monroe playing a big part in my life, as my father famously illustrated her collector's plate series from the Bradford Exchange. (Your parents or grandparents probably have a few.) As a kid, I once met the owner of her estate and got to see a few of her personal items. I will admit, I have no idea who Marilyn Monroe was as a person, so I'm not about to brag about some unspoken connection or anything. She was just a significant part of my childhood as she technically helped provide a living for my family. That being said, it was a pretty easy decision to base the look and style of Amanda after her. Having an extremely privileged young woman coming to terms that her family has profited from illegal dealings, and wanting to do something about it, is not an angle often explored in comics, let alone in such a dark manner. And when compared to my other, more straight forward heroes, I felt this helped set The Wraith apart from the rest. The Wraith was originally supposed to make her debut in issue #3 of my unreleased Protector comic. But as I've mentioned before, we never made it past issue #1. Long story short, it was just too expensive to print. It wasn't until this past year, that I even considered reworking the comic story into a radio play. But when inspiration strikes, you gotta run with it. I knew going into this play, I wanted someone with natural flare. Amanda is a very "extra" woman, and whoever embodied her should be the same. Spoiler alert- it was Shannon. Ever since I first met her, Shannon McDermott has exuded "extra". So casting her was an effortless task. We talked a lot about the character, and it was very validating to know someone else was so in sync with Amanda, as I was. For this project, Shannon had actually flown in to visit, so rather than just making up some art for the thumbnail like I have with my other radio plays, we decided it would be cooler to do a full on photoshoot with her in costume. And yeah, it was damn cool seeing her as both Amanda and the Wraith.

When a mysterious super powered titan begins destroying downtown Republic City, The Protector leaps into action to stop mad man's carnage. But is the Protector powerful enough to take on another superhuman? Or has he finally met his match?   Narrator - Emmanuel Mendes-Chumaceiro The Protector - Tom Proprofsky Robert O'Reilly - Heath Harper Red Star - Chris .R. Notarile Carmen - Kelli Kickham Cabbie - Josh Rothman   CHECK OUT OUR MERCH: https://www.redbubble.com/people/blin...   A WORD FROM CHRIS So I had this idea a little over a decade ago, which I had intended to put into comic book format. But because I was never able to complete my printed comic run of the Protector, it never happened. But after I made the Avenger radio play, I threw caution to the wind and decided to finally flesh it out. The goal was to show that the Protector is more than just a Superman archetype. He's a human being with his own set of flaws. He is not perfect, even though he tries to be. Showing him coming face to face with the polar opposite of himself is pretty much the scariest thing for him. He got to look into the mirror and see his worst reflection staring back.   I also wanted to do a little world building with this story and address how the Protector operates as a crime fighter, without having to don the cliche'd pair of glasses to hide his identity. I never understood how unmasked superheroes, especially in present day, manage to stick around and conduct interviews with the press, yet never have to worry about facial recognition. I think having the Protector make the conscientious decision to keep a low profile in both of his lives helps make him a little more plausible.   As for the Red Star, I wanted to keep his motives very simple. This guy has an agenda and does not want to deal with any unforeseen threats. He is not the typical villain though. He does not want to take over the world. He doesn't want money. Essentially, the guy just wants to be left alone, and wants to ensure nobody will ever mess with him. However sometimes, you have to say you want to be left alone very loudly.   I didn't want this story to be wrapped up with a nice, neat bow. Because that's not how life works. Hell, who even won the fight? Was Red Star truly bested? Or did he actually get inside the Protector's head? Hopefully it will make you think a little bit.   For more of his shows, check out his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6QBNwm94MzoZFlUWuxMwZQ or find him on RedBubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/blinky500/shop?fbclid=IwAR0my8CRnnYJRQokVRin5_0kGGtVByptiSv94RJkfuWRoLcZwwMhxxn-BRs

Ugh, teenage love triangles. Or quadrangles. Polyhedrons? Whatever they are, ugh! Even in the world of Avatar, kids have hormones. Fortunately, The Legend of Korra manages to deal with the bulk of this well-worn plot device in a single episode AND make it actually quite interesting, as chapter 105, "The Spirit of Competition" uses the backdrop of the Pro-bending Championship Tournament to examine the relationship between our three main heroes. Tenzin's daughters offer the wisest romantic advice, Bolin gets noodle drunk, and Pema is a home wrecker. Then, in chapter 106, "And the Winner Is...," we find out who the winner is. Duh. Who wins the tournament? Who wins the romance? How badass IS Lin Beifong? Those answers and more could only lead to "The Aftermath," as chapter 107 brings us Republic City's "Tony Stark," the return of the cabbage merchant (sort of), and freaking mechatanks! And we finally have our first Korra spin-off idea: Batman Beifong! (Bei-Bat? Bat-fong?) Paul, Eric, and Arlo get the bend back together (get it?) to discuss the legend (and attitude) of Korra of the Southern Water Tribe. In chapter 101, "Welcome to Republic City," our new hero leaves her frozen homeland behind for the pseudo-steampunk '20s era New York-meets-Shanghai industrial revolution of the capital. We talk about how different Korra is from her predecessor, what kind of man Aang's youngest son has grown up to be, and whether non-benders can really survive in a city filled with bender gangs and metalbending cops. And in chapter 102, "A Leaf in the Wind," Korra struggles with her spiritual side, we're introduced to the sport of Pro-bending, and good lord the voice cast of this series! The show may have come to an end, but the Aang Gang lives on as we take this opportunity to discuss "The Promise," the first collected volume in Dark Horse Comics' official graphic novel series continuing the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Written by Eisner and Harvey Award winner Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese; Boxers & Saints), with art by Japanese duo Gurihiru, "The Promise" picks up right where the animated series left off, but quickly demonstrates that the happily ever afters we saw in "Sozin's Comet" may be a lot more nuanced and complicated than we thought. We talk about the book's exploration of colonialism and cultural appropriation; how Aang's true role as the Avatar, maintaining balance between four autonomous nations, may prove a greater challenge than defeating a single clearly-defined enemy; how well the author captures the voices of the characters, and how it all transitions from fluid animation to the static art form of comics.  Oh, and we add another title to the growing list of spin-off series we want to see: That's So Toph! Next: time marches on. 70 years to be exact. And with the passing of an age comes the birth of a new Avatar, with new friends, new enemies...it's a whole new world!
