In this episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with Heather MacFayden, author of Don't Mom Alone and Right Where You Belong, to explore the transformative power of connection in motherhood and beyond. Heather reveals the surprising truth about loneliness—it's not about being alone but about feeling unknown—and shares practical strategies to overcome isolation. They discuss how vulnerability and authenticity are keys to building meaningful relationships, emphasizing that it's worth risking rejection to pursue genuine connection. Heather also reflects on her journey of letting go of the heavy burden of parental responsibility, offering wisdom on balancing the unique challenges of raising children while finding your own identity outside of motherhood. The conversation dives deep into the seven types of rest—physical, mental, emotional, sensory, social, spiritual, and creative—and how understanding these needs can rejuvenate weary moms. Heather shares powerful stories about the importance of stepping back from striving, finding joy in small moments, and living in alignment with your God-given purpose. With insights on Sabbath, identity, and creating intentional community, this episode is a heartfelt reminder that you don't have to do life—or motherhood—alone. ** Get your copy of Don't Mom Alone here Learn more about Heather and all she has to offer here ** Download your free 1000 Hours Outside tracker here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/trackers Find everything you need to kick off your 1000 Hours Outside Journey here >> https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/blog/allthethings Order of copy of Ginny's newest book, Until the Streetlights Come On here >> https://amzn.to/3RXjBlN Learn more about your ad choices. In today's culture we hear: "Hustle!" or "Slow down!" We are either prodded into endless activity and productivity or told that what we really need is to prioritize rest, relaxation, and simply "being." Is it any wonder we feel torn in every direction, worried we're missing the opportunities God has placed before us while at the same time feeling guilty that we're doing too much? Through her book, Right Where You Belong, Heather MacFadyen encourages us to simply occupy our God-given space--a Hebrew definition of humility. God has given you talents and a sphere of influence. Your role is to fill that space, empowered by the Holy Spirit. In this episode, Heather presents four boundary lines to help you identify your unique God-given space and shows you how to evaluate your next steps with confident peace so that you can stop feeling exhausted and guilty and start feeling fulfilled. If you're anything like me you may have had a negative definition of humility. A definition that may mean punishment, or to make yourself less than. Maybe it was even used against you in response to an action. What if biblical humility doesn't start with doing or being less, but instead starts with fully recognizing and living in your God-given space. What if biblical humility begins with stepping into the life God has for you? My friend Heather MacFadyen is back on The Happy Hour today. Where do our children belong? How do they know what God's plans for them include? How has God gifted them to contribute in this world? Should they compare themselves to everyone else? These are some of the questions I'm tackling on the podcast this week with my friend Heather MacFadyen, of Don't Mom Alone. Heather walks us through some of the brilliant concepts in her new book, Right Where You Belong, to help us learn how to help our children find their place in the world. You won't want to miss this one! (It might just give you a sense of knowing where you belong, too)! *********** Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide, Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, by Brittany Ann, of Equipping Godly Women. Tackle the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” from a biblical perspective. The way our children answer this common question varies wildly from day to day. From teacher, to fire-fighter, to astronaut, to juggler, we just never know what they'll say. For young children, this question is full of promise and excitement. They can be anything they want! The sky's the limit, and it's fun to dream. But as our children get older, this question takes on new meaning. The excitement of endless possibilities gradually gives way to the pressure of choosing the right college, career, job, or relationship. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” becomes stressful, almost agonizing, as young adults wrestle with major decisions that will undoubtedly affect the rest of their lives. But what if finding their purpose didn't have to be so stressful? What if our children could know with confidence exactly what God wants them to do? In Praying God's Word for Your Child to Find Their Purpose, you'll pray for God to work in your children's hearts to: Draw near to God in sincere faith Be guided by the Holy Spirit Learn how to love sacrificially and with intention Learn to walk in God's strength instead of their own Find rest in God alone Understand God's bigger plan Submit their plans to God's And more! With biblical teaching, scripture-inspired prayers, and space to journal using our Think, Pray, Praise method of daily prayer, this digital prayer guide is perfect for the busy mom who needs God to move in the hearts of her kids. There's some exciting news around here I've been waiting to share! My dear friend Heather MacFadyen and host of the very popular Don't Mom Alone podcast has asked me to be on her show for the next six weeks. We're doing a summer of mentorship series and the first episode is out now. We're covering all kinds of parenting tips as well as “important topics” like the time my son put a cherry bomb exhaust system on his truck and even Heather's texting habit that needs an intervention. Don't miss it this summer. In honor of this fun announcement I've invited Heather to join us on MESSmerized today. We're taking a deeper look at how to know if you're in the space God has for you and how to occupy it well. Heather has a great word for us when it comes to dealing with comparison struggles, hearing God's voice in our lives, and recognizing (and encouraging) our kids' giftings from the earliest age. Right Where You Belong is her new book out on this topic and a must-read. I'm so grateful to each of you who listen each week. I would be grateful if you would share MESSmerized with your people.
We are wrapping up season 2 (already!) and this conversation is the perfect way to end our conversation on Finding Purpose. When you start dating someone, or are thinking about getting married, it's pretty common to make sure the people closest to you (especially family) give input on whether your partner is a good fit or not. Different cultures have different ways of giving “permission” before two families get connected. But when it comes to stepping into your purpose, do you need “permission”? Do you need to wait for things to look good? For you to feel ready? Or for your next right step to match what other people approve of? Jesus went before us and occupied different spaces, which gives us permission to do the same. He is our ultimate permission-giver. We are firmly secure in Christ, and no one's approval or rejection, no uncomfortable or risky space – nothing can take away that security we have in Him. Listen in as Heather kicks off this episode with a rapid fire Q+A with Candace, and ask yourself - would you rather reveal your Netflix watch list or your Music playlists?! Thank you Heather for being part of this season, and offering a wealth of wisdom and encouragement each week! In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Needing (or waiting for) permission to take a step into a new space or a next step in life How God gives us permission to step into our purpose, even if it doesn't look perfect or we feel ready Spaces Jesus had to occupy so that we could have permission to occupy our own spaces Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. Have you ever found yourself in a season that felt like living in a prison? Maybe you actually have spent time in a prison or in jail. We've all walked through spaces and seasons that feel really difficult. Maybe you are in one right now. Don't give up. There is grace for what you are walking through right this second. A lot of times we are walking through hard places and blame God for the circumstances, but He is the one who is with us through them and He heals us in them. No matter where we go or what we face, His presence is with us and we are completely surrounded by Him. Think about the story of Paul in the Bible, when he was in prison. The walls begin to shake around him, crashing down to create a way for him to escape. But his first response wasn't to run from the prison. He chose to stay and wait for God to release him – and when God did, He released Paul in peace. When spaces feel like prisons, do we want to try to escape or wait until God releases us in peace? If you are walking through a hard place, God's presence and His peace are with you. And if you have made it through a valley, use your story to encourage others on the journey. In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Spaces that feel like prisons and how our attitude can impact embracing those places The difference between worrying and bitterness Hard places in their lives where they've had to walk through it with God and allow Him to heal them through it Feeling God's presence and finding His peace in the valley Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. Have you heard about George, the thriving fiddle leaf fig Candace has? Over the years, she has tended to it, nourished it, and cared for it. And just like she has taken care of her fiddle leaf fig, we attend to our space and assignments. There are things that can distract us or sabotage our space. Like foxes that steal from gardens and impact future fruitfulness, there are things that get in our way and impact our future ability to grow. What are situations or issues that distract you within your space? Is there something that feels like it could totally sabotage your assignments? It might be easy to think of external issues, but often we get in our own way. The good news is that there is a river of love and unlimited resources of all we need – it comes from God. And when you are in the river, your cup always overflows. Cultivate what matters in life, nourish your assignments, tend to your spaces, and watch them flourish and grow. When it comes to owning our space, sometimes we may find ourselves shrinking back. Maybe it's because we fear failing and being hurt, we lack bravery, or are too comfortable. On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes we can swell within our space. We find ourselves stepping over the lines of our space and into the sphere of someone else's. Think about it this way: you show up to a theater to watch a play. The seats are assigned and you sit in the wrong seat. Not only are you taking up someone else's space, but you are missing out on your own. Sound familiar? Knowing who you are, who you are not, where you start, and where you end is incredibly powerful when it comes to discovering (and living out) your God-given purpose. Let us encourage you: You don't need to be the one that fills all the spaces. You just need to fill your own space, with the gifts, talents and experiences you have. In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Taking up space that belongs to someone else; what that means and why it is important that we should be aware of it Knowing who you are, who you are not, where you start and where you end (self-differentiating, which can be really hard to do!) Have you ever watched a video of a child getting a cochlear implant and hearing for the first time? Typically the parent's first words to their child are about their identity. They tell them their name and how loved they are. God wants us to turn on our listening hearts so He can tell us the same things. He wants to tell us our identity and our worth, and wants to offer direction to our lives. But we must have a God-listening heart to truly hear what He is saying. How do you determine what is a good idea and what is God's idea? It is a question we've all asked and wrestled with, especially when navigating our purpose in life. This is where discernment comes in. And not the kind of discernment you may be used to hearing about. A discernment to know where God is leading you starts with a heart to hear and listen to His voice. And as you develop your God-listening heart, you will be able to discern what your responsibility is (and is not) in the world. He will guide and lead you to discover your purpose. Fund conversations that matter: donate.accessmore.com Have you ever watched a video of a child getting a cochlear implant and hearing for the first time? In the last four episodes, Heather + Candace broke down the Boundary Lines of Time, Place, Wiring, and Experience. They all fit together and help you navigate decisions, give direction to your purpose, and clarity to your assignments in life. In today's conversation Heather + Candace are going to help you make sense of using those Boundary Lines to Draw Up Your Space. “Where God has you is where Jesus is.” We gather at church but when we leave, we go into the world in different places and spaces that help define our purpose. We are made to bring Jesus to the natural places we go throughout our lives. If you were only in a space where you felt 100% safe and constantly comfortable, you could be missing out on God using you to reach the world in the ways He calls us to. Don't miss out on the space He puts you in. Draw your space and discover your purpose through the Boundary Lines of Time, Place, Wiring and Experience. In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Moments they have seen the 4 Boundary Lines clarify their purpose Ways you can bring an awareness of Jesus into your everyday life as you draw up your space A current decision Candace is navigating; Heather guides her through the Boundary Lines to help bring clarity and direction to the decision Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. What do modern manners look like? Manners are simply social behaviors or habits - you can have good ones or you can have bad ones. But it's been 101 years since Emily Post first published her book on manners and etiquette and it only seems as though lately we, as a society, have regressed in our social behaviors. My guest this week, Lee Cordon, has long felt called to make an impact on this generation and the next, to help people be gracious in all they do, say, and give. Sure, manners include which fork to use when, but it is much more than that. It's a way to show love and respect to our neighbors and ourselves. In our digital age where boundaries can be blurry, Lee offers us encouragement in training our children (at any age) to respond with grace and dignity. DoSayGive tackles the topics that most traditional manners classes don't, like social media and texting etiquette, how to be a good friend, and how to communicate with ease and consideration. DoSayGive also offers on demand video courses for tween and teen girls and boys (see links below). Do your experiences in life provide clarity as you discover your purpose? YES! Absolutely. Experiences shape your life + character. As you walk through different experiences, not only does your purpose become more clear, but your ability to sit with others during their life journey expands. You can hold hope for others when they feel hopeless and encourage them to the other side of that difficulty. What about hard circumstances? How do they impact your purpose? Sometimes it feels easier to hold onto past situations that were difficult to go through, and are difficult to heal from. But by doing that, ultimately you hold yourself back from all God has for you, and the purpose He has for your life. You can allow your circumstances to shape you, in a positive or negative way. In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Moments in life they can look back on and see how God used their experiences for a greater purpose Being able to sit with others in hard seasons because of going through difficult seasons How experiences help you hold hope for someone else walking through life The importance of moving forward from your past situations, and not allowing them to hold you back from your future Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. "I want to be like _____ . I wish I had _____ like _____.” Have you ever made statements like those? It is easy to desire to be like someone else or want a quality someone else might have that you do not, but living like someone else is not living out YOUR purpose. Your wiring is unique and God made you with that wiring for a greater reason. When it comes to discovering your purpose, looking at your gifts and talents, strengths and weaknesses is the best place to start. Putting your energy into how you are wired will lead you towards discovering your identity and embracing your purpose. If you don't use your wiring to fuel your purpose, you are only half-living. And using your gifts will encourage others to discover theirs, and live their life on purpose and with a purpose. So … be you, and live your life through your unique wiring! In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: Strengths + weaknesses; why they matter to how you are wired How discovering your gifts and talents will help you discover your purpose Being mislabeled and how that can sometimes be labeled a “problem” but is how you are wired Feeling like you are sitting on the bench in life, and not part of the game but how cheering others on (or sitting on the bench) serves great purpose Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. I'm so excited that my friend, Heather MacFayden is back on chatologie today! Heather has just released her second book, Right Where You Belong. But the topic of our conversation is best described by the subtitle of the book, How To Identify And Fully Occupy Your God Given Space. Most of us have asked questions like, “Am I where I'm supposed to be? Am I doing what God wants me to do and are there choices for me?” Heather uses the tools she writes about to actually help me work through a decision in my life. Every minute of this conversation will bless you…and I'm glad you're here for it. Remember to share this episode with a friend- it would mean the world to me! Have you ever seen a “magic towel” that swells and “grows” when you put it in water? Have you shrunk a shirt in the laundry? At different times in our lives God assigns us a space that we have to shrink or swell to occupy. This could mean giving up beloved roles, or taking on responsibilities we don't want. How do we respond when we find ourselves in these situations? My guest this week is Courtney Defeo. At God's leading she stepped back from a high-profile career and dreams of being a CEO so her husband could step forward in his career pursuits. She put certain things on hold to create the family and home culture she wants. While at first glance it might seem like she's squandering her talent and intellect, when she looks around her life she sees things that can only be done now. She feels the freedom to use her gifts in the spaces she's in now. Today we are going to be talking about “laying down our insecurities to step into the unique role God has assigned to us.” As Christians, we know that God is sovereign over our lives and has given each of us assignments to do and fulfill. Sometimes though, our confidence falters, and we question if we are really where we are supposed to be and if it is lining up with God's purpose for us. Our guest today, Heather MacFadyen, author of the new book, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify & Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space. She will share:How to quiet insecurities by teaching us how to have confidence in God's assignments and contentment in occupying the space He's given. Did you know that Candace once moved 18 times in 12 years? It can be challenging to establish new roots, build community, and find purpose when you are constantly moving. But one thing we can ALL do wherever we find ourselves is this: find purpose in it. Embrace the places in front of you; the ones you physically find yourself standing in every day. Whether that is inviting people into your home, helping your neighbors, talking to the mom pushing her stroller, or living life with others. When you show up to those places, you will discover your purpose. Because God wants to use YOUR places for His purpose. If there were a contest for great names of podcasts and books, Heather MacFadyen of “Don't Mom Alone” just might win. Heather is my dear friend and is joining us today to talk about an incredibly important topic: Occupying your God-given space. She's written an amazing new book on this topic, and we get to hear her heart behind it first-hand today. This conversation is so practical when we're wondering how to figure out where God has assigned us to work for him, and how to get past self-doubt and the dreaded imposter syndrome. (Been there, done that.) I also LOVE her advice on hearing from God and discerning if our plans and dreams are from God or from ourselves. You guys, please go listen—because we can't afford to spend even one more day questioning if we're being faithful in the place God has entrusted us and our families. Picture this: you sit down with your spouse or family after a long day.. They're all talking about their day, but you don't hear a word. You are glazed over and your mind is elsewhere. Sound familiar? Being present isn't always easy. But it is valuable. If we can become more aware of being present, then we give room for God to use us to occupy the spaces and places we are in. Time is a complex concept to understand and grasp but there is SUCH significance to this moment, right now, where you find yourself in life. There is a great purpose in the season you find yourself in. We see our life in little chunks of time. God sees the full picture; our full timeline. Do we trust Him with that timeline? God will use the spaces you occupy to build your character and expand your perspective. You may have heard this famous quote before: How you spend your minutes is how you spend your life. In this episode, you will hear Candace and Heather discuss: The complexity of time and the how we see time versus how God sees time What time has to do with occupying your God-given space and finding purpose Moments in their life that carry significant meaning in the overall timeline of their lives The value of being present to where you are in your everyday life Head to Candace.com to download the FREE guide, and to order Heather's latest book, Right Where You Belong. Have you ever been in a season where you feel stuck? You look around and don't see success or purpose with where your feet are planted. You don't feel qualified (or sometimes comfortable) doing what God has called you to do in that season. Success. It is a word that carries individual meaning and can change from season to season of life. But at the end of it all, success comes from a humble place of fully occupying your God-given space. Because it's not about us, it's about Him and His purpose. It's not about us feeling qualified, it's about who He is and how He works through us to fill the gaps. We have all struggled at some point to understand God's will and purpose for our lives. And in different seasons, we may also feel like we are missing out, forgotten or doing less important work than what He has for us. That simply isn't true! God's will is at work all the time and He invites us to join Him. We miss out on His will when we don't accept those invitations. Pastor Rick Brown exhorts the men through the life of Joseph. Part 3 - The Prison. This teaching is from the Men's Conference, Calvary San Jose, Calf. So often in life, God's plan just doesn't make sense? There was Joseph trying to do the right thing and he still got in trouble and was thrown into prison because of Potiphar's wife's lies. In this message, we find out that God needed Joseph in prison! That sounds a little crazy and certainly doesn't make sense to us, but here it is. So often, we can sit and wonder where God is and why I have to endure the trials before me. All the while, God is at work to achieve His glory and plan through each of us. I pray that I can remember this each and every time I am facing a challenge. I pray that I can hear God's whispers above my fear as He says, “you are right where you belong. You are loved. I'm here with you. Just wait, because your story isn't finished.” Let's dive into from Gen 39:21-23, 40:1-41:1 with Rick. Don't miss this opportunity to listen in, friends. I know you'll be encouraged! The Prison 1. Joseph's Prosperity - Gen 39:21-23 2. Joseph's Ministry – Gen 41:1-8 3. Joseph's Good News – Gen 41:9-13 4. Joseph's Request – Gen 41:14-15 5. Joseph's Bad News – Gen 41:16-19 6. Joseph's Forgotten – Gen 40:20-41:1 “The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man..” Gen 39:2 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37 Respond today. Now, more than ever, we must anchor ourselves in the Word of God; it will provide us with a firm foundation in an uncertain culture. Rick reminds us to seek God in prayer, to open our Bibles to fill our hearts with His truth, and to look up to remind ourselves that God is with us. When was the last time you did something that took REAL courage? Something that made you nervous or forced you to trust yourself in a new way? Sometimes courage can mean standing up for what's right. Other times it's more like accepting where you are in the present moment and saying to yourself: I belong here. In this episode, speaker/author/entrepreneur Brittany Cole shares the times she's felt she might not belong and how she found courage to keep going.
