How Do I Know if My Child Has Eating Disorder or Body Image Issues?

Host Heather Creekmore sits down with pastor's wife, author, and counselor Kristen Hatton to discuss what to do if your child has (or you suspect they have) an eating disorder or body image issues. Kristen shares the story of her daughter who had a derogatory comment directed at her in 8th grade and then began to restrict food until it became the eating disorder, anorexia. After going through treatment, Kristen's daughter shifted from restriction to a restrict and purge cycle (bulimia) and Kristen, again, had to intervene to help her daughter restore a healthy relationship with food and her body. Heather and Kristen have a bit of friendly debate over whether or not encouraging a child to have healthy habits is effective for those with brains that are geared towards restriction or perfection. They also talk about how important it is to help our children be healthy in every area--not just physically, but spiritually and mentally too. Kristen shares what she learned, in hindsight, to look for if your child may be exhibiting signs of an eating disorder or body image issues. She also talks about how to know when you may need to bring in outside help. Do Body Image Issues Affect Our Parenting?

Heather chats with licensed counselor, pastor's wife, and author Kristen Hatton about the ways that our body image issues can affect how we parent our children. From passing on perfectionism, to trying to control, to expecting our children to look or act a certain way because we're still trying to keep up an image, body image issues certainly play a role in how we parent. Kristen and Heather discuss the ways our body image issues impact our parenting decisions, recognizing that, for most of us, it's so subtle that we can't even see we are doing it. They also spend time offering hope and encouragement to moms whose children have left home already. It's never too late to redeem a relationship, to apologize, or even to acknowledge how these issues affected the way your child was raised and restore a healthier relationship with your adult children. I'm so excited to have my friend Kristen Hatton with us today. Not only is she a Licensed Professional Counselor, but she's also a brand new empty nester with a great perspective on fostering relationships with our kids now in preparation for when they live away from our homes.    We talk a lot about communication in today's show, with Kristen highlighting several reasons why our kids may not feel safe or comfortable talking to us. Even with the best of intentions, there are things we inadvertently do each day that close the lines of communication with our kids. She may or may not have stepped on my toes in this area as I realize I'm guilty of several of them. Ha!    I especially love her list of seven ways to “parent ahead” (also the name of her book), which includes things like active listening, setting boundaries, normalizing awkward topics, and avoiding the temptation to nag. Listen in to get the complete list and her explanation as to why these things matter.    Kristen is one wise mom, and I can't wait for you to hear our conversation today!   Parenting Ahead by Kristen Hatton All things Cynthia

About the Episode: This podcast is encouraging to many of us who are busy with the ways the world seeks to fulfill us but seek rest in the Lord. The culture around us seeks for everyone to do more and more while not counting the costs. There can tend to be an innate sense of wanting to feel limitless, and along with that comes immense pressure to "keep up." How do we move from what the culture says is possible to how we are meant to live as believers trusting in the Lord? These women share their process as they think through which activities their families participate in. They share how fear is a motivation behind too many activities and their desire to have freedom from that fear. If you are struggling with issues related to anything, please don't hesitate to reach out to deeplight@pcpc.org or 214-224-2500. About Our Guests: Lindsey Sheppard and her husband, Clayton, have been married for almost 17 years. They have an eleven-year-old son, a nine-year-old daughter, and a six-year-old daughter. Sara Hale loves being married to her husband, John, and being the mother of their two children. She is a member of PCPC who says "hello" to Aunt Carol, who watches the services from California each week. Kristen Hatton is a Christian author, speaker, and Licensed Professional Counselor Associate supervised by Kari Stainback, LPC-S. She has written three books for teenagers, one specifically addressing adolescent girls' struggle for identity and worth, and her latest book for parents, Parenting Ahead (April 2023 release date). In addition, she started a ministry for parents called Redemptive Parenting that includes The Redemptive Parenting Podcast. But after nearly 25 years of mothering and lay counseling stirred her desire for further training to better walk alongside those dealing with such issues as stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and relational issues that she commonly encountered, Kristen returned to school for a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. As a professional counselor, Kristen works primarily with teen girls, young adult women, parents, and families. While she naturally operates from a biblical worldview integrating faith in counseling, Kristen gladly meets all clients where they are, for she believes the most important aspect of counseling is in the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, because Kristen does not see counseling as a one-fit-for-all, she draws from several counseling modalities, including family systems and cognitive behavioral therapy. Kristen and her husband have three adult children and a son-in-law. Outside of work, Kristen is active in her church and enjoys being outdoors, traveling, entertaining, writing, and watching football. Her writing can be found at kristenhatton.com as well as on the Rooted Ministry website and in LifeWay magazine's ParentingTeens magazine. About Our Host: A graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mark Davis came to PCPC as our Youth Pastor in 2003 and became our Senior Pastor in 2009. He and his bride, Kristina, met at a Young Life Camp in 1988 and have five amazing kids: Kara (and husband, Drew, and granddaughter Haddie), Madalyn (and husband, Jack), Cayden, Esther Kate, & Samuel. Parents are often fearful and overwhelmed as their kids approach the teen years. Yes, there are new challenges and struggles. But God is faithful and the gospel really is good news. How can youth workers understand and encourage parents of teenagers through these stressful years?  What's the central message of Parenting Ahead and tell us why you wrote it?  How can youth workers help parents keep the long-range in sight?  Youth leaders sometimes see tendencies in youth that seem to be rooted in either over-parenting or under-parenting… could you explain what you mean by those terms, and how might a youth leader be able to help a parent embrace a different approach?  It could be easy for a youth pastor who's unmarried or who either doesn't have kids or whose kids are still very young to think they don't have much to offer parents. How can those youth leaders have a meaningful role in the lives of the parents of students in their ministry?  What's one way that every youth worker can encourage and support parents?  Kristen Hatton is a Christian counselor in Dallas, TX  and the author of multiple fantastic books for teenagers. Today, we'll talk about her latest book, Parenting Ahead: Preparing Now for the Teen Years, and about how youth workers can be encouragers to the parents in their ministry.  Instagram: RedemptiveParenting  Website: kristenhatton.com  Join YPT's Facebook group: @youththeologian (make sure you answer the membership questions) Follow YPT on Twitter: @youththeologian Follow YPT on Instagram: @youththeologian YPT has published an ebook that's a free download for subscribers! Youth Ministry is Theological Ministry captures the essence of Youth Pastor Theologian in one ten-chapter book, written by six different contributors from across America, Mexico, and the UK.

Our older kids had distinct hopes and maybe some pretty solid plans about how their summer would look. Enter COVID-19 and we're all adjusting to this new summer reality. With varying physical distancing measures in place around the country, and many group activities cancelled, we have an opportunity to help our older kids find purpose in their "new normal". Enter Kristen Hatton and Greta Eskridge, two moms who are intentional about the everyday moments and stand out memories. With Alex and Krista in the mix, these four women have 15 kids between them! From work ethic to intentional rest, family books to managing food needs this is a great listen on the early end of your summer. We recorded this conversation, full of practical COVID-sensitive ideas a few weeks ago. Because of this we don't cover protests, hard conversations, or citywide curfews, though these are likely topics of interest to our listeners with older kids at home. Here you'll find more discussion about quality time, making memories with our kids, and creating a sense that family is a place they will want to come back to. We pray these are timeless topics regardless of the day's headlines.

We also chat about allowing your kids to see your sin nature and the value of apologizing to your children. Redemptive Parenting Podcast 3:30 Will you share a little of your faith journey with us?  When did you come to know Jesus as Savior? "The way I see growth now is totally different than what I might have said before. Growth is NOT sinning less and less and getting better and better and doing all the right things, as I might have thought in the past. It is more about seeing our sin rightly....Seeing our sin is a good thing, because it drives us to know more of our need for a Savior." 6:57 What is redemptive parenting? "Redemption is a slave trade term.  So when a redemption price was paid a slave was set free, which is exactly what Jesus did for us.  He perfectly obeyed all that God required and then gave up His life in our place giving up His righteous record. So, He paid the price for what our disobedience and sin deserved." Mark 10:45 Romans 3:24 "We were set free, but not without a price.  It was God's grace to us." "A definition [of grace] I really like is God's goodness to the guilty." "Seeking to live redemptively, or redemptive parenting, I see it as seeking to give grace as we abide in His grace." What if parenting wasn't just an opportunity to course correct or provide behavior modification? What if it was a chance to mirror the gospel by acting to save someone from error or evil. That is the meaning of "Redemptive" and it is actually the model Christ calls us to as parents.  Kristen and I chat about how when we parent out of our WEAKNESS rather than strength, our children can learn so much more and see that we have the same need of Jesus as they do. This conversation was SO timely and helpful for me as a mom who loves to parent for the "outcome." Kristen challenged me to see the error of that thinking and realize I had so many opportunities to teach a different - and more important - lesson.  Kristen Hatton is the author of The Gospel-Centered Life in Exodus for Students, Face Time: Your Identity in a Selfie World and Get Your Story Straight. She recently started Redemptive Parenting on Instagram with plans to expand that ministry alongside pursuing a masters in counseling. The tabernacle is full of details that we often want to read over, but all of it is important. Moreover, all of it points to Jesus. In this episode, David and Seth are joined by author Kristen Hatton to help us see Jesus in the tabernacle. Check out Kristen Hatton's book on Exodus: http://a.co/d/7kJ78Vd Visit Kristen's website: https://www.kristenhatton.com/ Follow Kristen on Twitter: https://twitter.com/hattonkb For more information about Spoken Gospel visit: http://www.spokengospel.com Welcome to Spoken Gospel. This is our journey to speak the gospel out of every corner of scripture. Each week author and poet David Bowden sits down with preacher and blogger Seth Stewart to address one pericope of scripture and show how it points to Jesus. We believe that the whole Bible is about Jesus. In fact, everything is about Jesus. “From him, through him, and to him are all things” (Rom. 11:36). “For by him all things were created…all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:16-17). Since everything in the world is about Jesus, certainly the Bible, which is his word, is about him too. “And Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Lk. 24:25-27) “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (Jn. 5:39) In fact, we are convinced that reading the Bible without seeing how it points us to Jesus is to read the Bible with a veil over it. “For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed” (2 Cor. 3:14-16). This text goes on to say that it is the Gospel that is veiled. But when the veil is taken away by the Spirit, and we see the Gospel throughout the Bible, we don’t just get new information or discover clever connections. We actually see, “the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4). Seeing Jesus and his Gospel throughout the whole Bible is not about trying to see something that isn’t really there, but trusting the Spirit of God to show us what is really there. And what is really there is the image and glory of God in Jesus. This isn’t about seeing beyond the text or through the text. It isn’t about overlooking the historical events or the author’s intent, to see something mystical and secret. It is about seeing how God operated in historical events, through authorial intent, in the texts of scripture to show us more of his glory in Jesus. That is our goal in this podcast. We will work through books of the Bible in segments. Usually these segments will be broken up by the text itself, pausing for reflection where the literature seems to tell us to stop and take account. Our hope is to make it through the whole Bible, speaking the Gospel out of every corner of Scripture. Welcome to our public experiment to test this thesis. Welcome to Spoken Gospel.

Teens. Toddlers. Moms. No matter the age. We all struggle to remember (or know) the truth about who God says we are. And our position in Christ. When we forget, we let friends, circumstances, or lies feed our souls with identity. And that takes us down the path of uncertainty,  harmful activities and a broken path. Thankfully, today’s guest, Kristen Hatton, helps “Get Your Story Straight”. When her daughter was in 6th grade, Kristen started teaching her and a group of friends truth from the Bible. Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of great resources available for preteens/teens. So she used notes from her husband’s sermons and wrote her own Bible study. (click here to check it out)** In this episode, Kristen and I talk about the struggle for our kids to know how “justification” applies to daily life. (And define what ‘justification’ means). We also chat about how to help teens navigate the challenges of social media. And Kristen vulnerably shares her daughter’s battle with an eating disorder (which began with internalizing social media posts). Lastly, Kristen helps us start to keep communication open with our kids. So when they are teens they will keep talking. I’m in the stage with lots of little people all trying to be with me and talk to me (at the same time). But after three blinks I’ll have a home full of teen boys. The time I spend listening now will impact how much they talk to me in the future. Very thankful for the help, perspective and wisdom from Kristen. Now I can see the teenage years as an age of opportunity not a season to be feared. What we chat about: How quickly our kiddos grow into teenagers. How Kristen saw a need for good bible study materials for teens. Helping our kids be anchored in who God says we are (not who their friends on social media says they are). Importance of teaching our kids the concept of justification. When the world is measuring perfection and performance but we know we are only perfect in Christ. How to communicate worth and identity to our kids. Why teens stop talking to their parents. Listening and asking probing questions. Responding with grace instead of condemnation. How internalizing social media posts led to her daughter’s eating disorder. How boys struggle with social media. How Kristen talks to her kids about the impact of social media. Talking to your sons & daughters about pornography. Keeping an open conversation. Where are we to find our identity? Our current and powerful cultural narrative is convincing children, teens, and adults alike that we are to create, maintain, and find our identity in what we look like on social media. Consequently, we pour our time and energy into practices and habits that destroy us. It’s feeding the epidemics of anxiety, depression, and disordered eating. The path to hope, healing, and fullness is found in a different narrative, the biblical narrative, which leads us to find redemption and identity in Jesus Christ. How can we help our kids hear and follow this life-giving message? Stay with us as we talk about helping kids find their identity in Christ in a world of snaps and selfies with Kristen Hatton, author of the book Facetime. . . on this episode of youth culture matters.

If you've ever wondered if constant exposure to social media is having an effect on teenage girls, the answer is yes.    While we can't be sure of the depth of the impact, we do know that it contributes to feelings of low self-worth, the desire for approval, and perfectionism.  These, in turn, can lead to other self-harming behaviors. After realizing that her daughter had an eating disorder, Kristen Hatton decided to investigate what lay beneath the surface of her own child's issue, and along the way discovered that the feelings her teen was battling was a common experience for many teen girls. We discuss how story can lead to better conversations about important topics in the home, how enabling differs from helping, and why it's important to create a culture where it is OK to fail.  Don't miss this important episode!

When I was a young mom (yes, before social media took off) - I LOVED reading blogs. They made me feel seen, understood and more normal in my parenting journey. I have followed Jennifer Scott and her blog for almost 15 years. And every time she shares something, I read it and re-read it and try to absorb her wisdom. You are going to LOVE her heart for her kids, her vulnerability on where she's still growing and her obvious relationship with Jesus that oozes out of her heart. You will feel like you grabbed coffee with a best friend and mentor.Be sure to make it to the end, we discuss her “adulting” list. It's such a fantastic checklist of things we can be practically teaching our kids before they leave our nest.Be sure to listen back to Part 1 of our Empty Nester Wisdom series with Kristen Hatton and stay tuned for Part 3 with Sharon Mankin.Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show:Connect with Jennifer on InstagramJennifer's Blog Jennifer's Adulting List The Christian Parenting 2023–2024 prayer journal is now available! So many of us parents are fearful about the “teen years”, but are so hungry for advice. That's exactly why I had Kristen on today to give us encouragement around this topic. We want to prepare and be intentional without taking control of our kids' entire story. You will love her practical tips while feeling a major sense of peace that God has got it!Be sure to get to the end and enjoy my favorite part. Kristen opens up honestly with her struggle with perfection and how it impacted her daughter. She explains the power of transparency and embracing mistakes. She reminds us that we ALL need Jesus - not just our kids. The more we can show that to them - the more that faith and trust will take hold.Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show:Classical ConversationsConnect with Kristen on InstagramKristen's website Kristen's new book, Parenting AheadPardon the Mess is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network.
