Another week, another sticky situation for the prime minister and some of his MPs - this time it's centred around his language on immigration. When Sir Keir Starmer announced his White Paper, he argued that Britain "risked becoming an island of strangers" if immigration levels were not cut.So was he intentionally evoking Enoch Powell's infamous 1968 Rivers Of Blood speech? Or was this a big mistake? Also, with the Assisted Dying Bill back in parliament this week, Beth Rigby, Ruth Davidson and Harriet Harman go on a tour of the British Isles to look at how different parliaments are approaching their legislation. If MPs in Westminster vote their bill down, could it stop it in its tracks in Holyrood too?Come and join us live on Tuesday 20 May at Cadogan Hall in London, tickets available now: https://www.aegpresents.co.uk/event/electoral-dysfunction-live/Remember you can also watch us on YouTube!
Psalm 119 concludes. The entire poem is a eulogy to God's laws and the psalmist admires, studies, remembers, contemplates, learns and hopes to understand these rules. There is a repetitive, meditative quality to the poem which is followed by a series of songs sung as pilgrims travelled to Zion, the City of God, Jerusalem. These are the Songs of Ascent, and here is where they begin.Written and produced by Chas Bayfield.Music by Michael Auld and Jon Hawkins Music.Cover art by Lisa Goff
Our host Minal is back with our guests Benny and Vipula. At halfway mark, we will review Episode 10 and 11 of Moving Kdrama. These two episodes focus on Jang Ju-won's backstory - the superhero we lovingly call the Hulk. Episodes 10-11 moves between different timelines as we learn how JuWon goes from a life of crime to a government agent. And we get to experience another great love story as he meets the love of his life, Hwang Ji-Hee. We have aptly titled this pod review as ‘Rivers of Blood', because of the sheer Tarantino level violence dotting the script. Again, spoilers from the drama, so we suggest you watch it first and then listen to this Deep Dive. Episode Outline: The ‘Monster' in the opening night club sequence Ju-won's self-employment tactics Ji-Hee & Ju-Won meet and the two lonely souls save each other Ju-Won's life in the underworld & Min-gi's betrayal The Hulk's Courting Style Hee-soo is Ji-Hee's daughter Director Min puts Ju-won through the ultimate test Iconic hallway fight sequence Dooshik makes an interesting choice and we swoon over him Ji-Hee finds a better future Episodes Trailer: Episode 10-11 trailer Moving Beyond More information about the concept of coffee girls or ‘Dabang' in Korea Recurring theme is that superpowers are a burden. This is yet another tragic origin story of betrayal and violence. Who's the real monster that can cause actual harm ? The one with the superpowers (Juwon) or the one with evil intentions (Director Min) ? Other dramas/movies discussed in episode: Iconic Hulk breaking down the wall imagery referred when Juwon's breaks the motel wall here, here and here Watch the iconic hallway fight sequence from the Korean movie Old Boy Benny's Corner: Favourite Romantic Pairing (Series/Movies): All 3 : Hyun-Bin/Son-Yejin in Crash Landing on You +Minal: Ji Chang Wook/Nam Ji-Hyun in Suspicious Partner +Benny : Shah Rukh Khan/Kajol in DDLJ Bonus: Favourite Confession in Kdramas [All from Hometown Cha Cha] Vipula: Marriage Proposal Minal: Hye-Jin's confession to Dusik Benny: Dusik and Hye-Jin's confession at the beach Music Credits: Music from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/t/mood-maze/trendsetter. Poor James Cleverley. Can't a guy just announce his psychotically cruel migration policy without Braverman heckling that it isn't fashy enough in her resignation* speech? We look at the Tories' performatively mean new immigration plans and why they'll never be enough for Beerhall Sue. Female Bodies as Territories of War is the second episode in the Rivers of Blood series. Here I attempt to analyse how sexual violence against women has been historically used as a war strategy by both legal and illegal actors during the Colombian armed conflict as well as other conflicts around the world. We'll explore the role of the patriarchy in the conception of women as sexual objects and how this perspective enables and justifies sexual violence against women, especially during times of conflict. --- Music by Cynthia Montaño performing "Las mil y ningún mujeres". In the 10th century, a succession of Byzantine rulers reversed centuries of strategic policy by embarking on a series of campaigns that dramatically reshaped their empire. This effort and its consequences for the history of the region is the focus of Anthony Kaldellis‘s Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood: The Rise and Fall of Byzantium, 955 A.D. to the First Crusade (Oxford University Press, 2017), which provides the first survey of this important era of Byzantine history written in over a century. Kaldellis sees the campaigns that began in the 950s as a consequence of the collapse of the Carolingian empire and the decline of the Abbasid caliphate, which provided the Byzantines with an opportunity to stabilize their southeastern frontiers and to extend and consolidate their holdings in the Balkans and in Italy. Effected through a combination of military conquest and traditional Byzantine “soft power,” the result was a greatly expanded domain, one centered now in Europe rather than in Asia. As Kaldellis explains, what brought this period to an end was not any factor internal to the empire but the simultaneous threats posed in the late 11th century by the Normans, the Pechenegs, and the Seljuk Turks, which in the end proved too much for the Byzantine state to manage successfully even with the help of the warriors of the First Crusade. In this conversation, JT and Bryan explore a variety of intriguing topics ranging from bizarre occurrences in nature, such as the safety of drinking chemically altered water, to the conspiracy theories surrounding space exploration and the moon landing. They delve into mythology, discussing figures like Zeus and the Nephilim, and how these ancient stories connect to modern narratives. The discussion also touches on the destruction caused during wars, particularly World War II, and the implications of historical narratives that may have been manipulated or hidden from the public.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/jt-follows-jc/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
