Who was Robert H. Goddard?  His theories on space exploration were so ahead of his time that they were mocked and ridiculed by colleagues and by the New York Times… but Robert Goddard persisted, and with very little resources, he overcame adversity and launched the world's first liquid-fueled rocket, ushering in the space age.  In 1903, the Wright brothers took their historic “First Flight” and got humanity off the ground. Just 23 years later, Dr. Robert Goddard's “First Launch” was the first step in taking humankind off the planet. 43 years later, in 1969, humans walked on the Moon!  Although admired by the scientific and aerospace communities, most people have no clue who Goddard is or the extent of his groundbreaking accomplishments and vision.  Charles Slatkin wants to change that.  Charles Slatkin is the founder of the Robert Goddard Project and the Wonder Mission. Part of this project includes the “First Launch'' centennial celebration – a unique opportunity to leverage the incredible legacy of Dr. Goddard, the Father of Modern Rocketry- and recognize the achievements of today's scientists, engineers, educators, researchers and “visioneers.” Charles is a multimedia and internationally recognized “wow factor” pioneer, space evangelist, and visioner. Charles has an extensive background in “wowing” people through his expertise in science, film, video, audio and photography-and today, he's taken his talents from his professional career and applied them into the Goddard Project, reimagining Goddard's legacy with advanced storytelling technologies to help inspire and motivate a new generation of dreamers and “visioneers.” Get involved, support or volunteer, or get in touch with Charles at: charles@thewondermission.org  More about the Wonder Mission  https://thewondermission.org/

They also pay homage to Robert H Goddard, the first man to successfully launch a liquid-fueled rocket into space. The hosts pose a question of the day for listeners to discuss: would you rather take an elevator into space or to the center of the Earth? The Word of Wisdom for the day is taken from Proverbs 21:1, emphasizing God's sovereignty over all things. The episode ends with a reminder to keep the conversations going beyond the show. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anothergreatday/message

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bonus: Spaceflight began in the 20th century following theoretical and practical breakthroughs by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Robert H. Goddard, and Hermann Oberth. The first successful large-scale rocket programs were initiated in 1920s Germany by Fritz von Opel and Max Valier, and eventually in Nazi Germany by Wernher von Braun. The Soviet Union took the lead in the post-war Space Race, launching the first satellite, the first man and the first woman into orbit. The United States caught up with, and then passed, their Soviet rivals during the mid-1960s, landing the first man on the Moon in 1969. In the same period, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and China were concurrently developing more limited launch capabilities.

Neil Koenig, ideaXme interviewer, senior television producer and journalist, interviews Rachel Goslins, Director of the Arts and Industries Building, at the Smithsonian Institution. Neil Koenig comments: What does the future mean to you? A forthcoming exhibition in America's capital city will attempt to help visitors to answer this question. The Arts and Industries Building (AIB) in Washington DC is one of the oldest parts of America's vast Smithsonian Institution. It originally opened in 1881 as the first national museum in the US. Over the years, millions of visitors have experienced world-changing inventions like the electric light bulb, the steam locomotive and Alexander Graham Bell's telephone at AIB. After almost a century of showing exhibits such as these, the building's 100,000 square foot halls closed completely in 2004. AIB will be relaunched soon with a new exhibition, called FUTURES. This multidisciplinary project will feature artefacts drawn from the Smithsonian's vast collection and research centres, as well as large-scale commissioned artworks and dozens of interactive exhibits, with the aim of “encouraging visitors to embrace their own role in shaping what is to come”. In this ideaXme interview, AIB Director Rachel Goslins talks to journalist and producer Neil Koenig about re-launching a museum in the middle of a pandemic; the wider challenges facing the museum sector; and her goals for the FUTURES show, and the original research under-pinning it, which reveals that what most of us want from the future is “not flying cars and robots” but values like “peacefulness and sustainability”. RACHEL GOSLINS, FIRST DIRECTOR OF THE ARTS AND INDUSTRIES BUILDING Rachel Goslins has more than 20 years of experience across the worlds of art, law and public policy. Before her new role as AIB's Director, Rachel served as Executive Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, advising the Obama White House on cultural policy from 2009 to 2015. Under her tenure, the Committee spearheaded campaigns of cultural diplomacy and national investment in the arts, including: the Turnaround Arts project, the first federally-led, public-private partnership to introduce arts education programs to low-performing elementary schools, and Film Forward, which recovered and restored Haitian art and artefacts endangered by the 2010 earthquake and its aftermath. Earlier, Rachel founded a documentary production company, directing feature documentaries for the Public Broadcasting Service, Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel and History. She is a 2012 Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. Although Goddard maintained that the rockets were not a danger, he soon moved to Camp Devens, Massachusetts. There he was able to launch the rockets without attracting attention. The War of the Worlds - H. G. Wells - Book 5 Title: The War of the Worlds Overview: The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialized in 1897 by Pearson's Magazine in the UK and by Cosmopolitan magazine in the US. The novel's first appearance in hardcover was in 1898 from publisher William Heinemann of London. Written between 1895 and 1897, it is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extraterrestrial race. The novel is the first-person narrative of both an unnamed protagonist in Surrey and of his younger brother in London as southern England is invaded by Martians. The novel is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon. The plot has been related to the invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices. Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians? At the time of publication, it was classified as a scientific romance, like Wells's earlier novel The Time Machine. The War of the Worlds has been both popular (having never been out of print) and influential, spawning half a dozen feature films, radio dramas, a record album, various comic book adaptations, a number of television series, and sequels or parallel stories by other authors. It was most memorably dramatized in a 1938 radio program directed by and starring Orson Welles that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional. The novel has even influenced the work of scientists, notably Robert H. Goddard, who, inspired by the book, helped develop both the liquid-fuelled rocket and multistage rocket, which resulted in the Apollo 11 Moon landing 71 years later. Published: 1898 Author: H. G. Saturday, October 5th is the 132nd birth anniversary of rocket pioneer Robert H. Goddard. His was the first liquid-fueled rocket to prove the concept that allowed for the exploration of space as we know it today. He launched the first liquid-fueled rocket in March 1926. The maximum altitude he achieved was 1.7 miles. His technology eventually was adopted in America soon after his death in 1945. October 5th is also the 61st anniversary of the founding of NASA. It was originally established as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and had 8000 employees and three laboratories. President Dwight Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act in August 1958 in response to the launch of Sputnik on October 4th, 1957. Congress created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on October 1st, 1958. Along with our seasonal weather change comes the now obvious changes in sun time. We’re down to 11 hours 36 minutes of sun above the horizon vs 15 hours on June 21. We’ll still lose another 2 hours and 15 minutes between now and December 21 with Halloween as the halfway point to Winter Solstice. This is a great time for stargazers because they can start early enough and be warm enough to see three seasons of constellations from sunset to sunrise. Jupiter and Saturn are still the showpiece items of the evening sky. On Sunday night at 8 p.m., 60 degrees up in the NorthEast, the International Space Station will be visible.
